Solange Knowles in Christopher Kane

Posted on January 26, 2012

Solange has helpfully offered to demonstrate for us all how one badly chosen item can throw off an otherwise perfect little getup. Solange? Why don’t you come out here so everyone can get a look at you?

Solange Knowles attends the Tiffany celebration of the launch of True Love in Pictures in New York City in a Christopher Kane dress paired with Fendi Sandals.

Ooooh, so close, Miss Solange. Fantastic dress, eye-catching pair of shoes… but then you had to go and pick that clutch. It’s fine on its own, but pairing it with the bright yellow and purple is making you look like an Easter basket. And honey? It’s still January last time we checked. This is one instance when a basic black bag would have served you well.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Solange wearing a simple, black dress. I agree the pink bag wrecked a perfectly good look here.

  • Anonymous

I also think the natural hair needed a more made-up face to bring the look together.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. I really like her fro, but her face looks really bare and undone here, especially in light of that very sophisticated lil dress and killer shoes.

    • Anonymous

Meh, I kind of like the effect of the natural face. YMMV.

I don’t mind the pink bag. I actually think she looks pretty great here, but she could’ve used some lipstick or something.

Agreed. I don’t mind the bag but I think a little lipstick and some more noticeable eyeliner and/or mascara would have served her well.

I think the outfit is great, including the pink bag, but hate the shoes. They look cheap, even though they’re not.

Yeah, I thought for sure that the one item ruining the look was going to be the shoes. They look almost like bridesmaid shoes. Really, really ugly.

Awww, I liked it, but once you said Easter basket I can’t unsee it.  I thought a skinny belt might be appropriate.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks fantastic. The bag is a nod to how INSANE she used to look.

    • MilaXX

Solange does manage to look good about 75% of the time. It’s just that TLo often only featured her more cracked out looks.

      • Anonymous

agreed.  she always kills any magazine spread she does and is usually THE gal on the street (or at the festival) ~ she really knows how to put seemingly-discordant items together in a way that works.  i hate the tendency for her to only get mainstream attention when she looks less than perfect.

  • Anonymous

The lack of support for the girls is making my eye twitch.

    • Erica Dorsett

Yes, I thought perhaps it might be a comment on how the LACK of a particular item (a good bra) can ruin an otherwise nice outfit.  She is one naturally pretty girl, though.

  • http://profiles.google.com/amanda.leigh.albert Amanda Albert

Really, TLo? I thought the bag was fine, but the shoes are HEINOUS.

    • Anonymous

Totally agree — the bag was fine, and then I got to the shoes … blech. Hate with this outfit.

The shoes are a terrible eyesore.  Must. Be. Burned.

something about this getup is a little off. you have the soft easter colours, but then the heavy gold bangles, but then natural hair and makeup… the entire thing reads a bit off.
her hair is bothering me the most, i think. love the natural look but it’s a bit…. tall? and not wide enough at the sides. might just be the shadow behind her throwing me off tho.

  • Sara__B

I know the look is too Easter-baskety, and too springy, but it’s also fun and cute. (Okay, maybe that pink clutch brings the style level down to Kindergarten-cute, but it’s still cute!) I’m just glad she doesn’t dress like a crazy person any more.

    • Anonymous

Yes, it’s definitely an improvement. She gets a lot of crap for being Beyonce’s homelier sister, but I think she’s quite pretty. She just doesn’t seem to know how to put herself together in a flattering way. She could be a knockout if she just knew what to do with herself.

I like it. The bag might be a bit off, but the shoes are fantastic and I think she looks really good.

I’m not loving the gold cuff with the yellow dress. I think silver, bronze, or even copper might have been better. Then I’d do a metallic clutch in a similar color. I think black might be too heavy.

    • Anonymous

I like that styling!  Because I don’t like the gold cuff with this outfit either.

  • Anonymous

I like the dress, but it’s definitely a spring/summer number.
She needs to zhuzh her hair out a bit, a la Nazri from Uli’s season of PR. I love the natural thing, but here it’s looking a little boxy.
    Also, makeup.

  • Anonymous

Dressed for Easter was the first thing I thought.

I like her dress, hair, and shoes, but the purse and low key makeup don’t work here.

I like the outfit – a little Spring is cheering up my January day :) – but the Don King hair just isn’t working with the look.  Sorry.

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I don’t think the bag is that bad.

    • MilaXX

I’m thinking it’s a matter of proportion. I think a smaller bag may have worked better.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I might go with a brown bag rather than black. Black and yellow are always too ‘Bee Girl’ to me. Also don’t like those shoes (they remind me of ugly Campers – as opposed to cute Campers), and I agree that her girls need some support.

  • http://twitter.com/thelilerin erin l.

A purple belt would have looked amazing with this.

  • Anonymous

That dress looks good on her, doesn’t it?

I personally don’t like the shoes much, but no one comes to me for fashion advice so I’ll take your word for it that they’re good, here.

I question basic black for the clutch, it wouldn’t have been easter-ish but just as focus-pulling as the pink, I think. I’m thinking a multi-colored/textured/small-patterned [choose one, not all three] bag with metallics & maybe picking up a color from the shoes (or even the dress.)

  • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

I think she could have rocked a shorter natural.  I’m glad, though, that she’s let go of the weave addiction, at least for a little while.  Let that scalp go back to its ordinary surface tension.

    • MilaXX

Solange has been natural for over a yea. She occasionally rocks a wig, but mostly she wears her own hair out.

      • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

Fabulous.  It’s been a while since I’ve been out of the house myself.  My natural is greying, and I am full of despair.

  • Anonymous

Still, she gets major props for improvement.  This girl used to be a constant hot mess. Lately she’s been looking very, very put together and fabulous.  Baby steps.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

I think she looks adorable, and so much better than before. Her face look like it’s got too much powder, maybe? Lighter in the face than the rest of the bod, which happens (to me) when the light in the bathroom/makeup application space is weird. And I like the purse.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

Black bag? Really? That would have been too heavy. This laffy-taffy clutch, if not the best choice in the world, actually does not look so bad the more I look at it. Would have been more Easter-appropriate, though, for sure.

    • Anonymous

Oh man, I haven’t had Laffy Taffy in years! Do they still make it? That bag is the EXACT color!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deborah-Jozayt/100002949685297 Deborah Jozayt

You can still buy it in the tubs like they used to! The jokes are still inside each wrapper :)

      • Anonymous

Absolutely. Laffy Taffy is currently in my candy bowl. My nieces and nephews love the jokes on the wrappers.

  • iCouture

Oh poor thing, living in the shadows.  Its nice she was allowed out of the basement for an event.

  • Anonymous

I actually can’t forgive the shoes, rather than the bag, even though she’d still look like an ice cream scoop.

  • Anonymous

Those shoes are all kinds of awesome.

    • Anonymous

I love them too! Wouldn’t have paired them with this dress, though.

  • Anonymous

I don’t really like the shoes at all.  I also don’t think this particular yellow is her color.

  • Christine Marie

Didn’t y’all read British Vogue this month? Pastels are way in, bitches. Especially together. I kind of love this look

Also, no Sundance fashion commentary? Really now?

  • Anonymous

She looks great, although a little springlike, except for the bag and cuff.  I don’t even like the dress on the model, but I like it on Solange.

  • http://twitter.com/DonnaThePirana Donna

I’d say this is an acceptable iteration of the mullet dress, no? It’s a /tasteful/ mullet.

  • Anonymous

I hate the bag but I wouldn’t choose black either. Maybe no bag at all and let a handler carry your lipstick. No handler? Then sorry, Dear, I can’t help you.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PRM766RS56X25A5742XLACK2LM Sam

I think she’s got pretty hair, but does anyone else think that it’s oddly square looking?

And I cannot get behind square hair.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Looks a bit like a tennis dress to me. She makes a dress that I don’t particularly like look good.

  • Anonymous

I actually prefer the bag over the shoes.

  • Anonymous

The dress looks a lot better on Solange than on the model.  She gives it some shape.  I don’t mind the clutch, and think black would totally overpower the look instead of fading out.  The clutch does look like a large pack of gum though…doesn’t it.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986/ Judy S

    That is her dress, though.

  • Anonymous

    Easter basket.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know. The whole look is a bit Easter-ish, but I like it. Also love her natural hair.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

    Agreed

  • Anonymous

She appears to be infinitely cooler than her sister.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

So cute except for that dang clutch.  So close.

  • Anonymous

It’s like her head and her body are going to two different events.  I appreciate the natural as much if not more than anybody but seriously, you gotta wear make-up.  I don’t even think she has on earrings.  It’s like she really wanted to go hiking but somebody made her wear a dress and dropped her off at the red carpet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

It’s the typical Hollywood “I’m SO not my sister so I’m going to look as different as I can from her”…

  • MilaXX

I think a smaller bag in a deeper shade of purple may have worked better.

  • Jennifer Jacobsen-Wood

I like the shoes in the photo, I hate them on, seen from the top.  They look too much like ugly old-lady slides.

  • Anonymous

Ah, I see. This look is for the fashionista who is also a Minnesota Vikings fan. Replace the clutch with a foam finger and she’s ready for the tailgate!

  • Anonymous

I’m mostly concerned about the rolled out of bed hair and make-up. I’m assuming that was intentional? Am I wrong? One can never be too careful with these “celebs”.

  • Anonymous

I like it. Its Solange for god sake. I think she looks super freshfaced and tight.

  • Nora Mulllin

She needs some ‘fro shaping, lipstick, and a new bag. That said, the dress looks great on her and I hate the dress.

    • Anonymous

I agree, that dress is ugly.  This certainly shows how the flash on the runway can throw off color though, doesn”t it?

  • http://twitter.com/sockandaphone Gaby

the shoes bug me more than the bag, tbh. Those are fug shoes.

  • Anonymous

    her fro looks… ‘square’.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Or a purple one.  I’m ok with the pink, only because its Solange and she doesn’t look absolutely bat shit crazy like she sometimes can.

  • Anonymous

Not only is the bag a disruptive color but the scale of it is all wrong.

A bit of lipstick wouldve provided some balance.

I also don’t like the pose. You can’t see the dress and the crossed legs look awkard frm this angle

  • Anonymous

i think it’s the shoes that are the problem lol.

  • margaret meyers

I’m just glad they adjusted the hem to make it a little less like a Mullet.

  • Anonymous

Leave the purse and change the shoes

  • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

I think this ensemble is well-styled. She looks great. Plus, I don’t think that the pink clutch is as much of a blight on this outfit as everyone is making it out to be. She’s got such an eclectic style.
