Rooney Mara in Miu Miu and Michael Kors

Posted on January 06, 2012

Geez, we hate to sound like such a broken record with this gal but she’s the only one out there right now doing anything interesting on the red carpet. Besides, lazy celebs are still on holiday, it seems, instead of hitting the red carpets of the world to give us stuff to talk about. Those bitches.

We love it for being different but we don’t particularly like how much of her stomach she’s showing. Not out of a prudish sense; just that it looks better on the model, showing off only a tiny strip of skin. We still find ourselves wishing she’d sport some jewelry, though. We haven’t given up on that one yet. Still, it’s a sharp look and certainly no one else is showing up looking like this right now, so our hats, they are doffed.

But that’s minor praise compared to the “BRAVA!”s we uttered upon seeing this next look:

We can’t remember the last time a dress was so perfectly suited to the wearer’s hairstyle. In fact, we detect a little wit in the choice since the bust mimics her bangs pretty much perfectly.  A lot of ladystars turn to Michael Kors, but we can’t think of one who could make this dress look so dramatic and edgy. The headband is genius.  We don’t often say this about actresses on red carpets, but she could walk a runway right now without changing one thing. She looks amazing.

I adore both looks without reservation.  Brava Rooney! Geez, is that a new word? bravarooney?

      • Anonymous

        I like your style.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          Awwww, thanks!

      • Anonymous

I think it is a new word now! Especially seeing how often she’s popping up on this blog. An In should be a Bravarooney.

      • Anonymous

Bravarooney indeed! I give her a WERQ in the Michael Kors urban cowgirl chaps dress.

      • Anonymous

Yes, it’s a new accolade: Pulling a Bravarooney!

    • Anonymous

That Michael Kors gown made my breath catch when I saw her wearing it yesterday.  She just looks flawless and the headband is great — something I very rarely say.  Out of all the young actresses, regardless of whether they’re vying for awards or not, she’s turning into the one I most look forward to seeing on the red carpet.  And I’m still not over how great she was as Lisbeth.

    • Rand Ortega

Don’t like the 1st look: The top looks like a sports bra she forgot to put a shirt over. The Kors gown is perfect.

      • Anonymous

My thought was sports bra as well.  I had one years ago that was darn near identical to the cut and design of the gray Miu Miu, but in good ol’ sweaty workout black.  I bet Danskin didn’t charge what Miu Miu is.

      • Anonymous

        Industrial strength sports bra.

Not something mere mortals should attempt to wear.

    • Kyle Crawford

wow, I really did not like that MK dress before, but she looks fantastic, best look of anyone, in a while!

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

That second look is FAB. She’s got it all over the model. WERQ it Rooney!

    • Anonymous

Agree, the Michael Kors dress is perfect, but not sure I’m sold on the headband. I also think the Miu Miu getup is great, especially considering I would hate those shoes on 99% of people. INcluding me.

      • Anonymous

I think the headband looks cheap, and probably didn’t have to if a slightly different choice had been made.

And I’m sorry, I’ll never pile love on a mullet dress.

        • Rebecca Smith

Truly, the MK dress is just too reminiscent of Clinque Counter / Drama Vortex

    • Anonymous

She’s adorable! Love it! Only I wish she had rocked the boots on the second look like the model, it takes it to that fierce level.

Mara hon, the movie is done, please eat a sandwich.

      • Anonymous

She’s got two more to make, but I am still on Team Sandwich.

    • Anonymous

      I LOVE the second look.

Not fond of the first look. It looks like a sports bra paired with an a-line skirt, like she got done with her workout and dressed to go out but forgot the stuff to wear above the waist.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

I’m sick of her already.  Not a fan of the headband or shoes in the 2nd look.

    • http://twitter.com/mattharber mattharber

      The Kors is absolute perfection.

    • Anonymous

She looks good. Yes, she should discover the wonderful world of earrings, but she looks damn good.

Also, kudos for not imitating the model’s RED EYE SHADOW, and whose idea was that?

    • Anonymous

Elegant in belly tops and mullet dresses. Does . Not. Compute . Sensory . Overload.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I know! I never thought I’d be saying “that mullet dress looks fabulous”, no matter who was wearing it. But that mullet dress looks fabulous on her. And she’s does some pretty great things for that Miu Miu outfit too.

    • Anonymous

I thought the headband killed it. And I’m not a fan of the high-waisted A-line skirt in the first look, either. Otherwise, generally I love really clean, almost classic lines like these.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

second look is pretty much flawless for her style. i personally like the look with the belt more, tho, but it’d prolly be too much look for the RC.

the top look, though…… hooooo boy. no. the skirt doesnt fit her particularly well and theres entirely too much midriff showing. the top doesnt really fit too well, either.

    • Rebecca Johnson

Based on the comments to previous posts of the Roon-ster, she deeply divides the Bitter Kittens. For my part, I find her to be a striking palate cleanser. No bandage dresses, no refried blonde extensions, no “please go up a size”. I don’t love everything she wears but I enjoy looking at & analyzing it from a fashion perspective, which I can say about precious few starlets these days.

      • Anonymous

She has a real and unique sense of style and it really is refreshing. She’s not just wearing “pretty” clothes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

I like her styling of the MK gown so much better than the runway verson.  The belt and boots take it a bit too far into space-hooker terriority for my taste.

      • Anonymous

“space hooker”…Awesome!..i think that is my next Halloween costume…

    • Anonymous

Love the second look – the first fishtail / mullet / weird hem I’ve liked in awhile.  Love the headband with her hair.

But to mimic Rand Ortega’s comment, I had a sports bra EXACTLY like the shirt she is wearing  in the first one, so I can’t look at it without seeing workout clothes.

She’s so tiny, she’s going to have hanger qualities that will allow her to look good in a lot of interesting things (that isn’t an eat a cheeseburger commentary – she’s just waifish.)  I think we’ll be seeing a lot of her on this blog with two sequels on the way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I hate them both.  That is a mullet dress with a leather bolero shoulder thing, and a brown headband.  I actually thought TLo was being highly sarcastic about the MK dress matching her hair. Apparently not.  We are now matching dresses to bangs?  Say it isn’t so.  i don’t get her appeal.  obviously.

      • http://twitter.com/RBinTexas RBinTexas

I’m with you. Both outfits just scream “oops I dropped my oatmeal down there”. No wonder she never eats a sandwich; her clothes are a ketchup magnet. I’ll bet she even smells a little: it puts the gravy on its skin.

    • Vaniljekjeks

Never have I felt more compelled to go out and buy massive amounts of headbands.

      • Anonymous

Me too! I even have bangs (longer/less severe than hers, but still).

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

In fact, her look for the Kors dress is better than that of the model — ditching the too-heavy belt and the awful boots elevated the dress significantly.

      • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

Totally agree. That is some excellent styling.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Only effective use of a headband I’ve ever seen….

    • Anonymous

If she can sustain this level of commitment for more than 10 minutes, she might achieve Tilda-hood.

    • Anonymous

A mullet dress I actually like. They are few and far between

    • Anonymous

The first look wouldn’t work on anyone. I can’t tell you how much I hate this two piece dress trend.

The second look is fantastic, even though I’m giving that headband the Ye Olde Chad Michael Murray Squint.

    • Anonymous

the MK dress is beautiful! I’m so glad she skipped the belt and the boots! She is such a nice touch of fresh air in the red carpet…. something so unique…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

Don’t love the first look, but want the second look. I mean, if I lost 60 lbs and had bangs…

    • Anonymous

Is it just me, or does the MK brand reflect stuff that we have seen on PR?  Is that where he is drawing his inspiration?

      • Pennymac

I thought we saw a leather shoulder holster somewhere last season, but I’m not sure.

      • Anonymous

That was my first thought too.  I think Josh had something similar to this but with plastic at the top instead of leather.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

      First look:  NO NO NO.
      Second look:  YES YES YES!

    • Anonymous

Can you imagine how beautiful she would look in a deep crimson hue?

    • CQAussie

Rooney is killing it in that Michael Kors!  I’m ambivalent about the Miu Miu, I actually don’t like it all that much.  But the styling with the Michael Kors dress is working the hell out of it – the Duchess must be tickled pink today to see his designs so well showcased =D  Also I COVET those shoes.

    • Anonymous

My theory regarding jewelry is that Rooney had piercing overload for Dragon Tattoo.  She went from none to tons in a day.  Now, according to Allure, she took all but the nipple one out.  So any earrings would have to be clips, screwbacks, etc.

I wouldn’t mind an occasional bracelet or earrings, but her looks tend to be so designed that over-accessorizing could easily happen. Like these two though.  Can’t wait ’til she notices that colors exist.  Who’s her stylist, anyway?

    • Anonymous

She looks great in both of these.  I like her edgy style and I think I like the lack of jewelry for her.  But again with those damn bangs.

    • Sara__B

I never thought I’d like a mullet hem, but she looks fabulous in that gown. Hair, makeup, shoes, and everything in between. Wow. (The skirt and top, however, are too large for her — she can’t keep the waist up where it’s supposed to be.)

    • Anonymous

The first look is a bit meh for me, but she nailed it with the Michael Kors. She looked fabulous and  I loved the headband.

Has this been mentioned before? Rooney reminds me a bit of Tilda Swinton. Both seem to choose outfits that have very unique qualities. And they both wear the clothes in the same way–as if they actually *become* the outfit.

I’m not expressing myself well, here. Suffice it to say, Swinton-in-training, perhaps?

I keep wanting to call her Mara Rooney.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

She certainly has whatever that rare, indefinable quality is that allows her to bring something genuinely special to clothes that wouldn’t work on lots of women. She doesn’t always hit the mark, but I think she succeeds more than she fails.

The only way I can keep her first and last names straight is by reminding myself that her sister is Kate Mara.

    • Anonymous

I don’t care for the first one because it looks like she is wearing an exercise bra. I would love the second except for that stupid mullet hem. I just can’t. Without that mullet, it would be perfection. Even with said mullet, she looks lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Maybe she is on a jewelry detox; I heard that she got a lot of piercings for the movie. At any rate, fabulous, though I think a little bling could help.

    • Julie Fountain

She looks great but I am so over the mullet hemlines.

    • aimee_parrott

I’m not really a fan of the Miu Miu, but (mullet skirt notwithstanding) she looks perfect in the Kors.  Perfect.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

Perfect. Love her. Especially after seeing her in the movie.

    • http://profiles.google.com/laurenjeanstm Lauren St Martin

You do realize you complimented a mullet dress, right? I mean, I agree, but I’m shocked!

    • http://twitter.com/chemcutie Evy Colon

You liked a mullet dress??????????????????? What has the world come to??? But she seriously kicks ass in that mullet dress..

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

The Kors is amazing. I come and go between “love her” and “too weird for her own good”, but she’s striking the balance.
And also, compare her to any of the “blondish, straight hair, wearing a sparkling bath towel” starlets and she’s Tilda, Helen and Cate rolled in one.

    • Anonymous

Brava!  That Michael Kors is divine on her!

    • http://twitter.com/MissAmynae Amy Putnam Ellinger

LUV. HUH.  Best Michael Kors dress since Leighton Meester wore the similar one.

Seriously, I want to be her friend.  I even like the second look- I like how she’s not afraid to show her body- she had to change it so much for the Salander role, but she’s really embracing the thin-ness and using it to her advantage without looking trashy or unhealthy.

    • Judy_J

Not a fan of the first look…too much like a sports bra and skirt.  But the second look!  Fantastic! That Michael Kors dress suits her perfectly.

    • pat salzer

She is just about the only current young actress who is equipped with a really striking style and a bit of class as well. Even her misses help etch her in public memory without resorting to the obviously outrageous. I don’t mind how often she turns up on my favorite blogs. I just admire the hell out of her.

    • Anonymous

She’s stylish and refreshing.  I kind of like the lack of bling.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

The first outfit looks too big on her, but otherwise it’s interesting.  The second look is ALMOST perfect, but I just can’t get behind the headband at all.

    • Lori

I have that bra times three.  If she put a sweater on she could do an edgy remake of “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”
Sorry, I grow weary of her.  Her Liz is awesome but Rooney Mara, overexposed right now.

    • Anonymous

The first outfit is too big, as others have said; the last photo shows an awfully big gap between her waist and the waistband.  Plus, she just looks cold in that tiny, sleeveless thing in Germany in January.  Brrr.  The MK is lovely.

      • foodycat

I thought she looked so cold too! No one should be wearing spring collection clothes in a German winter!

    • Anonymous

Oh my darlings, I want to agree with you on the second look but…a mullet skirt?  With a goody headband from CVS?  I can’t.  I’m sorry.  Don’t hate me.

    • Anonymous

I’m not sure I’m on board with the your assessment of her as being the only one being interesting on the red carpet. That first look I find particularly boring, kind of ill-fitting, and drab.  Is the skirt supposed to have space at the top between the fabric and her body? The second look is a huge improvement, but I can’t help thinking that a belt would go a long way to improving the look (maybe not the belt the model is wearing however). I’m just not a fan of the mullet skirt though so am not completely in awe of it.

I wasn’t too keen on the Givenchy in the earlier Werq post (In fact it kind of made me want to vomit). I will admit however that she looked stunning in the Rodarte.

    • Anonymous

I think I’m falling in love with her. Or her character in the movie, I don’t know, but I like this somewhat dark vibe that she seems to have. The Kors dress looked better with the belt and boots though and I’m not a fan of the headband.

I like her better with the mohawk and the tats and the piercings.

    • Anonymous

PLEASE — Stop already with the Rooney Mara parade! She’s NOT the only one being interesting on the red carpet. Au contraire. I find her new look somewhat creepy and forced, and I want it to go away. You give her too much blog time.

      You need to reassess.

      • Anonymous

I agree. She tires and bores me. Same looks, same expression, same posture. Over. It.

    • Anonymous

She’s grown on me, big time. I’m not a fan of the bare midriff but as with all her looks it is still a refreshing departure from Too Short-Too Tight Land, where Lea Michelle seems to spend the bulk of her time. And agreed that the Kors is a home run. I don’t mind the lack of jewelry…the deliberate starkness adds to the distinctiveness and success of her look.

    • Anonymous

I love the dress! I do wish she had worn the boots the model is wearing. Or would that have been too “Lizbeth Salander plays dress up”? I don’t care–she is rocking this!

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

She’s actually ultrafeminine in her robotic way.

    • Anonymous

She made a mullet dress gorgeous, give this woman an Oscar.

    • bloodshothalfblind

that kors gown is so the perfect dress for her.  i havent seen anything this girl has ever done, but i’m itching to see what she wears come award season.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Love them both. Love both the shoes. The first look is the only time this week that I was really feeling a problem with the lack of jewelry. The outfit looks a bit casual sans any window dressing.  All in all, great, interesting choices.

    • Anonymous

I love both looks but the second one is really really terrific. Go Rooney!

    • Anonymous

For me, the Michael Kors is a way, way better look. The Miu Miu looks too much like a sports bra with a too-big skirt to suit me.

    • Anonymous

Very well done….how refreshing (as I’ve said before) to have someone with some imagination and guts — and, fortunately, a good stylist/taste!  Keep ‘em comin’, boys!!

    • Victoria Sharoyan

Every since you first posted the collection, I’ve been antsy to see those Kors gowns on the RC. Pleased!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

That leathery thing across the top of her chest in the Kors look? I’m calling that a “Joshstrap” from now on, in memory of Josh’s PR finale item that looked like that, but in that weird red-patterned plastic.

    • Anonymous

She looks smashing in both, but she killed it in that Michael Kors. She is actually rocking the hell out of a mullet dress. Never thought I’d be typing that sentence.

    • Anonymous

MK’s dress is like bondage Barbie.

    • MilaXX

I can’t say I liked Rooney much before this movie, but girl is doing some great RC. I like the first look, but agree it would look better with less flesh showing and I’m not crazy about that side view looks like the waist band isn’t even touching her. She definitely could have deployed some jewelry here. Maybe one statement piece like a big ring or bracelet. Second looks is spot on perfect. I like it better on her than on the model. Thankfully the bags have come in enough that she can actually look fashionable wearing them straight down.

    • Anonymous

She’s making me desperately want that MK dress, and I have to keep reminding myself that that is not what I would look like wearing it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NMLK23QK6C7NMLMVVYA5POXKJY WhiteMage

wow the kors looks is gorgeous. the first looks unfinished. almost like she’s going to the gym and she has on a sports bra. eh.

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

i wouldnt change anything except maybe HER SLOUCHING. BEAUTIFUL STARLETS STOP SLOUCHING! NOW!

    • Anonymous

I think she looks great, but I have to say:  Mullet dress & peep toe pumps getting raves?!  Who replaced my T-Lo with flavor crystals?

    • Anonymous

The MK dress works well on her.  Great decision to ditch the belt and wear peep toe shoes to enlongate her legs.  The hair wrap has to go though.

    • Anonymous

Still not a fan of mullet hems or bare midriffs, but I do think she is rocking these looks as well or better than anyone else could. I love that she isn’t cookie cutter on the red carpet. Agreed on the need for jewelry. I will say, though, I wore my hair extremely short for a long time. Getting earrings and necklaces right is very tough, especially if you are more of a minimalist gal. So, she should have some nice stud earrings and a cool bracelet or two.

    • http://www.facebook.com/theAccidentalHousewife Leah Elzinga

Wait, TLo!!  Are you giving a Brava to an actress wearing: mullet hem, black peep toes, AND cutouts?!  Go figure!  I’m with you right up until the headband.  Maybe in a different fabric (leather, maybe) but as is I can’t help but think it looks EXACTLY like my yoga headbands.

    • Jessica Goldstein

Is it me, or is the Kors a marriage of sorts between her hard/crazy look and her Audrey thing? If so, it’s the beginning of a single signature look: Audrey with an Edge.

That halter thingie on that dress- didn’t Evil Josh make that look out of plastic on PR and end up winning?  So either Kors stole this from Evil Josh, or Josh stole it from Kors, which massaged Kors’ massive ego and bam, the win?   Just opining.  Love the way this actress looks, week after week.

    • Anonymous

Like I said a couple weeks back, this girl is in Swinton territory when it comes to her beauty-from-another-planet, edgy eye, and the absolutely refreshing ability to Just. Say. No. to whatever the pack is doing.  Loving Rooney!  (Although I would have liked to see her go with the boots with the Michael Kors.)

    • Allison Woods

1 is good enough to be a YES, 2 is good enough to be a WERK….even with the mullet hem. Girl knows how to look good.

    • Anonymous

I love her in the Michael Kors, but the Miu Miu looks boring and unsophisticated.  I’m just not a fan of this bare midriff trend that seems so big right now.  When it’s done poorly (like here), it looks like they ran out of time and didn’t get to finish the top, and when it’s done well (like Versace’s been doing a lot lately), it looks intentionally slutty.

    • Anonymous

I generally hate mullet skirts, but she is genuinely rocking it. Love her.

I’m so glad she lost that awful belt on the 2nd look!!!  She looks darn good in that dress!

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

Gorgeous, she looks better than the model who looks sort of awkward.  I think the shoes really help.

    • Anonymous

Perfection!  That’s all I’ve got to say.  Luv her!!!

    • Ruth Gottesman

I want to find a way to use the sentence “The headband is genius” at least once a week. Not more than that, you don’t want to beat it into the ground.

    • Anonymous

Wow I have been wondering who the heck could rock Michael Kors’ urban cowgirl line. The boob chaps dress cracked me up when I saw it originally, but it looks great on Rooney! Totally should have been a WERQ! The Miu Miu looks like a sports bra with a yoga skirt, ick.

    • Anonymous

That Kors is fabulous–when we saw the collections in a post, I thought he had some of the few mullet dresses (and skirts) that I actually like.

The fabric of the Miu Miu looks cheap, and both pieces look not-very-finished…like a bad PR entry.

    • Anonymous

That second look is killer. The first one I’m torn about. There is something about the aggressive starkness and androgyny of the cuts that my wee little dinosaur brain understands as intentional statements, but I just don’t get it aesthetically.

    • Jam y

      Well then. Bravarooney!

    • Anonymous

it’s difficult to believe michael kors designed that. not that he didnt & not that it doesnt look fabulous, cos he probably did & it absolutely does. just very far from what i’d think his style. not to mention that she’s even carrying off the party in the front, funeral in the back business. very well, too.

in other news: i do not personally fancy the proportions of the miu miu items here, there, everywhere, on anyone. just too baggybottom, i think.

    • vmcdanie

I have to agree on the first look. There is too much midriff showing and like you, I’m not a prude but it looks too informal and borderline tacky for a red carpet event.

The second look is–that chick looks stunning. I love the headband.

Golly she doesn’t look so good when she turns to the side-look how that tiny skirt in the first look is just hanging off of her waist. I hope she gains back a little of the weight she lost for the movie or they turn around and shoot the next two quickly.

First look: If the waistline fit her properly (what is she, a size 00?), it might show less skin.
Second look: I NEVER thought I’d approve of a mullet dress, but this one looks fabulous!

      girlfriend is looking good!
you echo my thoughts on the midriff on the first outfit. the proportions are just a little off.
i love the second outfit from the hips up. not in love with the skirt, but overall, she still looks great.

Second outfit is killer.  The first one gets a big “yuck!” from me – not that anyone cares. LOL

No one’s done lack of jewelry this well since Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.

i anyone can wear that miu miu it’s her, but i’m not a fan of the bra with skirt look.  the second look is breath taking, the headband gives her an old hollywood turban look, but without totally going there.  didn’t MK steal that leather-yoke look from someone on PR?  viktor maybe?  here i go, back to the archives.  hey, i work at home, i can’t be doing this.  i’ll be in the archives for hours once i start.

OMG, did Rooney make you guys praise a MULLET SKIRT! YAYYYYY I think they’re so dramatic lookiing, but agree that most starlets can’t pull them off. Glad to see someone doing it!

the first dress looks like a muslin that has yet to be fitted or put into actual fashion fabric…but she’s a cutie.

The first look just can’t be done by anyone whose body and hair are not right – unless they are severe in the correct way it’d just look like a depressive’s summer clothes.

The head band IS genius, it completely makes the second look in my opinion. Pushes it from her wearing a great dress to a great look. Clearly, she’s managed to find the one elusive brilliant stylist available to the celebrity film community.

I love her ability to look fresh-faced yet edgy at the same time

I still cannot believe this is the same girl from The Social Network. Dark hair is so lovely on her – it really makes her stand out. Of course, being hanger-skinny doesn’t hurt either (in the fashion dept. at least).
