Pairs Division: Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis

Posted on January 10, 2012

Ladies, we are here to pay tribute. To your clothes.

Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis attends Audi Celebrates The 2012 Golden Globe Awards in West Hollywood, California. Viola Davis wears a Ports 1961 dress.

Too often have we sadly shaken our heads when one or the other of you came out sporting a bad wig or a dress that didn’t suit you. To be fair, Viola gets it right more often than not, but Octavia has had her share of problems with the red carpet.

From the left:

SHE: Must’ve found a new stylist because suddenly she’s wearing clothes that fit and flatter. This looks great on her. The proportions are just right. The shoes and bag are fine. But her makeup looks really harsh in this lighting and her hair looks a bit underdone. Also, we think the outfit called for more of a statement piece of jewelry than that semi-sad necklace she’s sporting. Score: 7.75/10. A fantastic move in the right direction for her. You’ve found your shape and size, honey. Now pay someone to do the detailing for you.

SHE: Looks SPECTACULAR in that dress, which screams to the room “I’M HERE AND I LOOK SPECTACULAR.” We love a bronzey metallic on a dark-skinned woman. It just kills. We also love that strip of pewter at the waist and hem, which gives the look a modern chicness. Hair looks pretty good, which is a relief because the last couple of wigs were a mushroom heads. The shoes a re a bit of a disappointment, though. Metallic sandals would have been sexier. And she could’ve used some bolder jewelry too. Score: 8/10.

Well done, gals. We can smell the oscar nominations from here. Keep up the good work.

I love a good black and white pattern.

As do I!  This one is also based on a sashiko pattern, so it gets bonus points from me.

I’ve loved Octavia Spencer since her stint on Ugly Betty. Both ladies look pretty damn good. Still haven’t seen The Help…

      • Anonymous

Yes, she was awesome on Ugly Betty. I’ve loved her ever since. If you are a fan of her work, you must try and see The Help.

Re: The Help. Don’t bother. Supremacist white washing of 1 of the darkest times in our history. The Help is neither fair nor factual; it reinforces the worst beliefs & fears our culture fosters on women of color & their role in this society. If you want an interesting, fact based read, check out Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes & Black Women in America by Melissa Harris Perry.

Both ladies look fantastic, but I wish Octavia would glam it up a bit. Her outfit is a bit too office for the occasion. While I don’t agree w/ the film, she & Viola are the only aspects that are remotely interesting. There’s a good chance Octavia will win the Hattie McDaniel Oscar, I hope she accepts it w/ all the dignity & glamour her beauty deserves.

Word. No need to see that movie, it’s been done before. Great book suggestion, too.

They both look fabulous, though I wish the photogs would learn how to light Viola properly.

        • http://profiles.google.com/h.e.waddell Heather Waddell

Agreed on all counts. The book of The Help is horrible too, and the author’s note at the end is a perfect example of, “OMG! I’m like, totally not racist because we had a black nanny who practically raised me and some of my best friends are black and YOU DON’T KNOW ME!”  She knew exactly what she had written and put it out there anyway. I’m going to go add your book suggestion to my reading list right now, because The Help left a terrible taste after I read it and I need to replace it with something better.

Saw Ms. Harris Perry on Colbert last night. She was cool. I want her to come over to my house.

I saw her too. She’s very cool. Maybe we should have just have a party, because I want her to come to my house.

            • Rand Ortega

Just don’t forget to invite me. No matter where you live, I’m there. & I have snacks.

              You’re on my list.

Viola needs a higher score!  TOO fab!

    • foodycat

Both gorgeous, although they look like they dressed for different events. I think Shelly O needs Viola’s dress.

    • Leslie Streeter

Octavia is obviously being dressed now by someone who realizes that she’s beautiful. And that’s important.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

My only quibble is, Octavia, Honey, SMILE!  You look so pissed off.

      • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo VicksieDo

She always looks pissed off on red carpets.  Hmmm

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Well, it isn’t going to win her any fans looking like she’s gonna cut a bitch.  Otherwise I think she looks terrific.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

No kidding! She looks fantastic, but she would look better (and her score would probaly go up) if she smiled.

      • Anonymous

Absolutely. Octavia’s outfit is nice, but the look would have amped up considerably with the right ‘tude. Miss Davis, on the other hand, has it in spades. What a hot, sassy chick she is!

      • Anonymous

She is smiling.  Closed mouth.  Open showig teeth is not always necessary.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Perhaps you’re right.  It looks so much like a scowl that its difficult to tell who is right here.

Ehm, why is Miss Spencer looking so grim? Is it her under-done makeup, or the thought that Miss Davis looks, well, radiant?
In other news, Miss Davis looks simply fabulous

I think Miss Davis has already had a trip to the bar and Miss Spencer is thirsty.

Agree with you about Octavia’s necklace, and the straps on her shoes make her legs look stumpy, but otherwise, she is looking fabulous!  As Leslie Streeter said, she’s obviously now being dressed by someone who thinks she’s beautiful.  I’d give her an 8.5.

The gorgeous Viola Davis is stunning in that dress.  Stun.NING!  Agree that a metallic shoe would have been better, but that’s quibbling.

      Brava, ladies!

They both look fantastic here, LOVE that B/W print on Octavia.  Agreed the necklace doesn’t photo well, maybe in person it had more impact and interest.  But….. is it me or does Octavia look less than thrilled about something?

    • Anonymous

Viola looks gorgeous although I think she needs a better bra

      • Ruth Gottesman

I was thinking the exact same thing. If her girls were up a bit more, that look would be absolute perfection.

    • Anonymous

Agreed on all counts, although Viola’s girls need some more uplifting.  And, just curious: how do you know she’s wearing a wig?

    • MilaXX

Agree with the scores. So happy to see Olivia dressing better even though the hair is a disappointment. Love the new hair on Viola.

I want that Ports dress.  OMG!

Octavia looks ADORABLE.  Viola Davis… she’s beautiful, but am I the only one who’s not feeling her makeup?  (Maybe it’s the lighting?)

      • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

She looks a little ashy around the chin, but that might be the lighting.

      • Anonymous

She’s regularly lit wrong. They’re just not used to appropriately photographing someone so dark and beautiful!

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

I stan for Viola Davis, and I think she looks great here, except for whatever her makeup is doing around her jawline. Might be a case of a bit too much bronzer. And Octavia looks really pretty here, and I do agree- the necklace was the right idea, it just needs more presence.

But I do have to say I love my people- their skin looks amazing!!!

      • http://CallMeJane.com/ CallMeJane

I was thinking that their skin looks like satin.  How did they do that?  Beautiful.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Judging from other pictures I’ve seen of her, I think she just happens to have skin that looks like satin, and they don’t have to do much!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love em both.  I do want Viola’s dress.

    • Alisa Rivera

Don’t you think Viola needs a better bra? The girls are a little low. It kind of spoils the look for me.

    • Anonymous

They both look beautiful and sophisticated.

    • Anonymous

OK, here we go. I don’t think Octavia’s look is RC at all. She looks OK, but as if she’s headed to work at the insurance company. She seems out-of-place next to Viola (who looks fabulous). Those aren’t dress-up clothes, they read as inexpensive everyday clothes. And the necklace is hiddy. Perhaps this accounts for the less-than-thrilled look on her face…

This highlights the on-going dearth of RC attire for those actresses who are larger than a sample size. Her dress a few days ago was terrific – was that the only appropriate dress available larger than a 6? Or is Melissa McCarthy holding the other one for ransom?

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

You nailed it in your second paragraph. Seriously, it’s completely insulting to women who aren’t built like waifs. There’s no reason that Octavia can’t look as fabulous as Viola all the time. I mean, maybe Ms. Spencer doesn’t care, and/or prefers more casual clothes. But considering how great she looked in the dress from a few days ago, I don’t think that’s the case.

        As I said… insulting.

      • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

But wasn’t this just a day event? I was under the impression that this was a luncheon/dinner as opposed to a full scale formal event. I like Octavia’s look, but I think she needed some bolder pieces.

    • Anonymous

I think I may shout “I’M HERE AND I LOOK SPECTACULAR.” when I walk into rooms now.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

The shape and shimmer of Viola’s dress is gorgeous, but she looks SO much better in rich jewel tones.  I hate the bronze on her–it looks like the burnt stuff in the bottom of my oven.  And I hate her makeup. Love her hair, though.
Octavia looks MUCH better than before.

    • Anonymous

They both look great.  Agree that accessories could have been punched up a bit, but the TLo scores are too low taking that into consideration.  I’d give a 8.5 and 9 respectively.

    • http://twitter.com/rmcgrudiva RL McGruder

Viola is KILLING it here.  Ooooh, I want that dress!

    • Anonymous

The one on the left looks like she’s going to an office party (maybe it’s the underdone hair) and the one on the right looks great, channeling the FLOTUS, but the damn hair covering one eye is killing me.

    • Anonymous

      I love both of them!!

    • oohsparkley!

I agree with Tlo’s points regarding the necklace. Octavia looks great!  I think it’s a little too casual compared to Viola.  Love the metallic dress and Viola looks fabulous.

    • http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/lastbutnotleast Anonymous

They both look good, but they’re dressed for completely different events. One of them has to be wrong.

    • Anonymous

I am not feeling the O love like many others. The skirt is far too wide for her and that top makes her look dumpy. Her accessories are cheap looking and her hair is a ‘couldn’t be bothered’. She is so gorgeous! I want to see her look fab.

    • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah Veenstra

If Viola Davis doesn’t play Shelley O in the eventual biopic, there is something wrong with the world.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/judi-townsend/578042503 judi townsend

agree with everything you said. just want to add though that the make up on Viola could be better

Lovely bronze dress, but I always regret the snug-under-the-belly look. Perfect except for that.

Pretty, but isn’t Octavia’s outfit a little casual for the Golden Globes?

Pretty, but isn’t Octavia’s outfit a little casual for the Golden Globes?

it’s a gorgeous metallic & i like the top of the other dress. otoh, shouldnt at least one of these women–if not both–have been offered a whole slew of free dresses by serious top designers & at least semi-couture houses? i even think the ports 1961 can be bought off the rack. at neiman’s or barney’s, true, but still. if there’s still–still–an idea in fashion that middle aged+not thin+black=unworthy of showing off fabulous clothing i think, were it possible, i would give up wringing my hands so i could wring a few peoples necks–& not just in theory. i am whiffing something i dont like & it really bothers me.

Saw Ms. Spencer on one of the talk shows. She was fun and gave a hint that had she not been working (promoting self & movie) she’d have let loose with a series of hilariously skeptical & skewering comments.

Which is to say, if the necklace didn’t remind me of misguided attempts to accessorize with red beads in the 80′s, I’d want to bump your score up a bit.

Ms. Davis just does such a good job of dressing to be photographed.

I think you’re just being stringent these days with the scoring, call it grade inflation but I’ll go with 8/10 and 8.75//10, respectively.  8.375 overall. If I can divide.
