Michelle Williams in Jason Wu

Ladies, is this skirt too short for sitting down on TV?

Michelle Williams in Jason WuMichelle Williams makes an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in Jason Wu.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu

Michelle Williams in Jason WuWe don’t really think so, but she’s got her hands clamped down on that thing like she’s deathly afraid a strong gust will have her nethers displayed for America. Kind of a shame, because we think it’s a really smart, pretty, chic outfit, but her posture and body language give the impression that she’s deeply uncomfortable. Then again, that could just be because she’s sitting next to Jay Leno.

ALL skirts that 99.9% of the Gliterati wear on talk-shows are too short.  Drives me SUPER nuts.

      • Anonymous

Maybe talk show hosts should do like the mani-pedi salons and give their guests a modesty towel when they sit down!

        • Anonymous

I’ll never forget my first pedicure, when I didn’t think about being in a chair above someone in a skirt!  When the guy put a towel on my lap, I wanted to hug him!

    • Noelle Haland

      Nah, not too short.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1363731332 Gerry Coleman

She appears to be either pissing drunk or as high as two kites.   “Maintain, Michelle, maintain,” you can practically her telling herself.

    • BuffaloBarbara

It depends on the angles.  Generally, I’d think this would be a fine length, but anything above the knees, you have to be nervous about where the camera is positioned to avoid giving the audience an eyefull.  In this case, I don’t think there’s an inordinate problem, unless the cameraman is a total perv.  Did she have a recent faux pas that’s making her nervous about that?

      • http://twitter.com/saturnwings Alexis

Totally agree about the “above the knees.”  As a [very] short woman, I can’t wear below-the-knee skirts and still look totally put together, and unfortunately, one always first greets clients standing up.  However, that poses a problem for the rest of the time [when you're sitting] and any post-work events (aka happy hour where bar stools seem designed to get women to flash everyone).

I also agree with the comments that she may just be trying to control that out-of-control ruffle, which makes the skirt cute and interesting but not so suitable for sitting down.  I’ll give her a pass and give her the benefit of the doubt in that she might have just thought she could handle the skirt (whether length or that ruffle or whatever) and then found out that she couldn’t when it came camera time.  This, mainly, is because she looks cute and not overly sexed (as one might expect considering her movie).

      Jay Leno is painfully unfunny.

      • foodycat

Yes, pressure to have to laugh at his jokes would make me look uncomfortable.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bethanypurdue Bethany Mavronicles

…And Michelle looks absolutely psychotic in the close up photo. YIKES.

      • Anonymous

So.True. What is that facial expression? Where is she looking? Does she even see what she’s looking at? (dangling prep, I know.) It’s just all sorts of uncomfortable. Love that peplum though.

        • Anonymous

I don’t see the crazy. It looks like one of those times when someone in the audience shouts something out, and the guest has to turn and acknowledge it, even though it’s broken their train of thought. Happens a lot on talk shows. They’ve probably just “whooped” at a reference to her hometown or a place she visited. She looks adorable to me. Reminds me of Barbara Eden in the very early sixties … pre-“I Dream of Jeannie” … or some other actress from that era. She’s got such a fresh, wholesome look.

    • Cathy S

It doesn’t seem to short. It’s very pretty too.

    • http://twitter.com/ohmybears48 Michelle Argento

I wonder if those pleats kept popping up on her when she sat down… she looks like she is trying to hold them down.

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

Definitely not too short. Perhaps her discomfort is because she’s menstrual and regretting wearing a white-skirted outfit. Happens to the best of us, girlfriend!

    • Anonymous

She looks so cute!  I used to hate her on Dawson’s Creek, but she’s really grown into something special…

    • Anonymous

I would say no, except she looks so uncomfortable. So maybe it is, for her.

    • Anonymous

Not too short.  Just ugly.  And skirt+peplum+sitting down=appearance of deflated beach ball.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Hahaahaha! I would feel equally repulsed sitting next to him.

      • Anonymous

ugh – I’d say that would apply more to Letterman – man what a creep

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

True, he is a bit of a lech. That’s a word, right?

    • Anonymous

Not too short, but you are keen observers of how nervous she is about her hem.

She is just fabulous. So impressed by her in Marilyn movie. great actor.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2254843 Kara Lang Guminski

Not too short.  It’s completely Leno.

      • Anonymous

        Word.

    • Anonymous

I think the length is fine, but the pleats look problematic. They look very stiff, and are quite possibly trying to fly about and pop her in the boob. I like the dress just fine, but not so much for a TV interview. Or anything seated.

    • Anonymous

well… you wouldn’t be asking that question to Leah Michelle…. right? :-)

    • Anonymous

It’s just not a good sitting-down skirt, because of the peplum, not the length.

      • Anonymous

It’s the skirt that couldn’t decide on a career choice and so did a double major in flared and pencil.

    • http://twitter.com/rgmx Mercy

I’m less worried about the skirt, which looks to tight to ride up much further, than I am about how crushed her breasts look.  THAT looks uncomfortable for sure.

      • Anonymous

Can peplums just die now? Yet another annoying fashion trend that looks ridiculous (at least on anyone over the age of 10).

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s too short, but anything above the knees makes you nervous.  I can understand keeping her body angled and her hands in her lap.  Just in case.

    • Anonymous

Nope, not at all. I think that’s just her. For someone who decided to become an actress, she always seems strangely uncomfortable in front of cameras. She does need a better bra, though, and to work with what God gave her up top instead of fighting it all the time.

She may also just be naturally modest, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Impressive posture in that last photo – almost Paltrow-esque.

    • http://www.facebook.com/amanda.fields Amanda Fields

No! Not uncomfortable! She is sitting up straight like a LADY! She is an A-List Star and a young lady and I love that she is ladylike!! :)

    • Anonymous

My initial reaction was “no”, but looking at her body language, it’s obvious that she’s uncomfortable about the length.  Which means that it is definitely too short for her.

    • http://profiles.google.com/kaitlyn.prenger Kaitlyn Prenger

I think it’s on the cusp of being too short, but is fine. She might have been a bit more comfortable with another inch or two, though.

      • Anonymous

I agree.  It really isn’t, but if she feels like it is, then it is.  She looks adorable, though, Jay Leno notwithstanding.

Compared to Kim Kardashian, who puts her vadge on display for the entire world to see her skirts are so short, this is practically nun-like.

I’m more concerned about the boob squish that’s happening right now.

    • Addicted2Glamour

Probably Leno-itis. I have it too.

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

      She’s so lovely.

    • Anonymous

As is it does not look too short, but the straight part is straight and “tight”/fitted enough that if she moves it COULD ride up.

I am not saying that it is too tight, just that that style CAN ride up with movement

    • Anonymous

It isn’t the skirt, it’s the lessons on how to sit in a ladylike way. Turn your knees to the side. Sit up straight. Do not lounge. Clasp your hands in your lap. Who is going to be comfortable doing all that?

    • Anonymous

she shoulda kept both feet on the ground… once you put on leg over the other, thats when our eyes start to shift.

    • suz72350

The outfit is very chic, but you’re right. She’s very uncomfy.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

Nah, that’s a good length. No idea why she’s acting like it isn’t.

    • sweetlilvoice

I vote she’s nervous because she’s by Leno. He would scare me too.

    • Anonymous

It’s not too short, it’s too tight. She needs something to fill that canyon between her thighs, so the audience can’t see up to her hooch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043171034 Tadiana Walton Jones

By my personal standards, yes.  By Hollywood standards, no. … Maybe she’s more like normal people than I thought!

    • Anonymous

That skirt is adorable, and I think the length is okay.

You just can’t continue to be twee if you’ve show The Good China on late-night TV, guys!  She has to protect her schtick.

    • Anna Maria Diamanti

That outfit is adorable. She always looks a little uncomfortable. She has rounded shoulders, so she always looks stiff but slouching, like she is tired but something is pinching.

    • Anonymous

It’s not to short for sitting down, but it may be too short for her personal standards

    • Anonymous

Then again, that could just be because she’s sitting next to Jay Leno.”  Oh, thank you for that!

I don’t think the skirt is too short for a sit-down interview on TV.  But I don’t think it’s the right shape for a sit-down interview on TV.  The little overskirt kind of gets lost.

    • Anonymous

Not too short, to my eye.

    • http://twitter.com/Kerry_McC Kerry McCombs

Jay Leno is awful and sexist and completely unfunny, so I think it’s the latter.

      • MilaXX

…..and an all around douche, but I think Michelle is just nervous.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

borderline – but she is on the safe side.  she looks great.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K7VOQSAYZ7H2OBX6LOJNNIBSSE Amanda

      Maybe she’s just really nervous??

    • Anonymous

It’s OK for sitting, ankles crossed, but not for crossing the legs.

Why do I always hear Julie Andrews singing The Sound of Music, when I see this woman?

      • Anonymous

        It’s the hair…

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

Did she ever had this hair when she was dating Heath Ledger?  I’m a bit confused by her claim a few months ago (and didn’t they break up for like a year before he died and she was dating new people at the time?)?

Anyways, I think she’s a pretty good actress but she always looks a bit sad and dowdy to me (thus I’m having trouble to buy her as Marilyn).  Looks like she’s doing her Oscar campaign now.

    • Anonymous

I wish this woman would stop dressing like she was sixteen.

    • http://twitter.com/glastea Coralie

Not too short, but she’s aware that she could be wearing something longer in case the camera angle’s strange. It’s not from the Lea Michele school of ‘up my arse whoops – totally the point though’ dressing, so she does get points!

    • Anonymous

Not too short. She looks fantastic.

    • Anonymous

Not the prettiest skirt I’ve seen but not too short. I recently saw snippets of Nicole Scherzinger on a couple of talk shows (flipping channels, did NOT watch more than a minute hehe) and each time her dress was SO ridiculously short she was constantly tugging at it. Classy. Made my eyes twitch.

Anyhoo, to me she just looks uncomfortable being on the show.

    • MilaXX

Not too short, but I think the bust looks a hair too tight.

    • Anonymous

Love the dress but that is not the venue to showcase its best feature, the peplum. (And no it’s not really too short.) Here’s an idea not just for Michelle but for any woman who’s on the talk show circuit: pants! They don’t have to be Ellen DeGeneres-eque. But a nice ensemble featuring pants would eliminate all worries of potential flashing.

    • Anonymous

I just want to pop in and say that I think her orange fingernails are amazing on this outfit!

    • Anonymous

She’s never really comfortable in front of people- regardless of what she’s wearing.

    • Lexie

Not at all! I wear skirts of that length to work fairly regularly and don’t feel the need to constantly hold them down. This time of year though I’m wearing tights too. Maybe she’s just very demure?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

Good until she crosses her legs, then borderline.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Cute dress.  It would have been fine, if she had just crossed her ankles, instead of crossing her legs.  Crossing her legs puts too much stress on the skirt.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

Her new hair color paired with that cut makes me weep for my lesser cheekbones.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986/ Judy S

In that first picture she looks as if she is posing for a charm-school photo from, say, the late 1950s. The clasped hands, crossed ankles. I don’t think it’s the dress, it’s a really really ladylike way of sitting. (The crossed legs change it to a “girls, see why you shouldn’t cross your legs?” pose.)

    • http://www.lindamerrill.com Linda Merrill

Not too short, but maybe she’s just being extra cautious. Meanwhile, she blows the Jolie-Pitts out of the water when it comes to looking good.

    • Anonymous

Compared to Lea Michelle’s talk show monstrosities, this is practically Amish. Seriously, this dress is super cute and she looks amazing.

    • Anonymous

no, not really.  although if the table was moved in the last shot, that might be questionable.  but la nina regularly wears skirts on pr that reveal her bootie and no one cares.  and a cute little butt it is, i might add.  cute dress on michelle, too.  she looks much better here that she did in palm springs (today’s other post).

    • Anonymous

cute dress…seems to be perfectly suited to her style/personality.  Not too cutesy or, conversely, too slutty.   coughleamichellecough.

I think she looks like she’s trying to be poised and sit like a lady.

    • Anonymous

Why does her neck look so short here?  She is lovely but these photos make me say the words “tortoise head” over and over when I look at her head and neck.   Why?  Also, I can’t stand Leno.

    • Anonymous

      Cute look.  Love the makeup!

    • Anonymous

If she feels it is uncomfortably short then, for her, it is.   It’d be too short for me, in those circumstances, even in my heyday. But it IS  longer than many female guests wear on these shows, so by that metric it’s not too short.

    • http://twitter.com/RzYoung RzYoung

Gorgeous gorgeous I want to be her.

    • Anonymous

It’s the peplum part of the skirt that makes the eye think it’s too short for sitting. It makes it look awkward — an image exacerbated by how uncomfortable she looks. (Someone upthread said her constant uptightness/discomfort makes it hard to image she can be believable as Marilyn, and I tend to agree, but we’ll see.)

    • Tamara Hogan

      Purr-fection.

    • Anonymous

I think being on any late night show must be the most awkward thing ever. Older men and bad jokes, yikes!

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I don’t think it is too short.  Cute little outfit.  I think the uncomfortableness is her natural state.  She seems almost painfully shy, to me at least.

    • Anonymous

At first glance it doesn’t appear too short at all, but in my opinion, if you’re going to sit there holding the skirt down and feeling and looking uncomfortable, then you should wear a different skirt. It’s a shame because she otherwise looks very pretty.

    • Anonymous

No, I think the length is fine. Keeping her legs uncrossed was a better choice, though.

    • Anonymous

she looks cute, and i don’t think she really looks uncomfortable, she just has a lady-like consciousness of her skirt and not wanting to flash the good china.
