Mia Wasikowska for Miu Miu

Posted on January 23, 2012

An almost unrecognizable Mia Wasikowska poses for photographer David Sims for the Miu Miu Spring 2012 ad campaign.

We like this a lot better than the last Miu Miu campaign we looked at; the one with Hailee Steinfeld. These are bright and colorful, and if we were flipping through a magazine, we’d stop on these pictures. We don’t really love the styling, but then again, this is ad campaign styling, which has a separate set of rules, most of which can be boiled down to “Get as much product in the picture as you can.”  She’s far better suited to the clothes than Hailee was and she looks pretty striking here, but this isn’t the best use of her looks, we think. She’s got one of those old-fashioned, romantic faces that look better with very little makeup (or the appearance of such). Probably wouldn’t have worked in an ad campaign, though. They clearly wanted high-impact images and she’s helping to serve that up.

She really is not at all recognizable. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but what’s the point of having a celebrity in your ad if no one can even recognize them and they don’t have enough household name recognition that you can figure out who it is anyway?

      • Anonymous

Yup. She reminds me of someone (else) in these photos, but I can’t place who. At that point, you might as well just hire a model, no?

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

January Jones? That’s who I am getting.

          • Anonymous

I get what you’re saying, but the third picture down is the one that’s really bugging me and in that one I get less January. Michelle Pfeiffer, maybe? (Just in that picture, I’m saying.)

I’m seeing a little Giselle, personally, especially that last picture.

          • Anonymous

I did not see that at all, but you’re right!

          • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

TOTALLY Giselle! I would never have guessed she could look like her. That’s insane.

    • Anonymous

The pix are beautiful but I NEVER would have known it was her if you hadn’t told me.  Don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

Ok, but what is the point of getting a fairly well known actress instead of a generic model if your going to style her beyond recognition?
This would only work if she was truly iconic, then it’d be subversive.

      • Anonymous

I don’t think she’s the kind of actress who has something iconic to her fashion. Maybe not yet. She disappears into her roles as she’s disappeared into this photoshoot.

    • Sobaika Mirza

I’m really surprised at how good Mia looks with bold makeup. I prefer a softer look with her, but she’s wearing it a lot better than I would have otherwise expected. She’s a much better fit for Miu Miu.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

Seems like a strange choice for such an ad, but it all works, mostly.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Oh my God, I love those ridiculous funky cameos. WANT.

I agree about the make-up: it’s not great on her. Since she does have such an old-fashioned face, this just serves to make her look generic.

    • Anonymous

If they don’t like the way Mia looks, why didn’t they just hire somebody else?

    • http://www.facebook.com/briana.kerensky Briana Kerensky

The first shot she looks a smidge like January Jones…

    • Anonymous

I’m a little upset they didn’t name the campaign Mia Miu Spring 2012.

    • Kasie Hilburn

Well she sold me on Miu Miu, so I guess JOB WELL DONE Mia!~

    • Anonymous

Why do they spend so much money on celebrity endorsements only to have that celeb made up to look like a stranger?

      Love the clothes, however.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

10:1 she’ll also be wearing the clothes on the red carpet.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Not buying it. No OOMPH there at all. She’s not giving good face. Not sure I blame her, though. Agree that this is not her look.

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

The first and second images remind me of Mondo :)

    • Anonymous

Well that’ll be the day – an ad campaign with an actress who isn’t suffocating under a ton of makeup. She looks great. Not like herself, but great.

    • Anonymous

Goofy cameos, cotton prints, flowers in the hair, and black velvet bows. EVerythng I love. Clap. smile .clap. I feel more stylish already.

      • Anonymous

I love all of this. I don’t care who it is. I ♥♥♥ the looks.

    • MilaXX

It’s definitely eye catching and like you said makes one stop and look. I want that bag in the last shot.

    • Anonymous

Does she remind anyone else of Natalie Portman? Especially the third photo down?

      • Anonymous

I’m actually seeing Julia Stiles more.  Probably due to the pallor.

    • Anonymous

Wow. She looks so beautiful in these shots. I kind of like the batshit crazy layering and combinations of clothing & accessories, at least in print. If she went out styled like that, as you point out, it would be another story.

    • Anonymous

I dunno…I look at these photos, and all I see is “Look at the BAG!  Isn’t the BAG great!  Hey wanna see my new BAG?”

I know the point is to sell…well, mostly BAGS I guess, but it is so awkwardly done here that it’s annoying.

    • Anonymous

They could have saved themselves some money and used an anonymous model to same effect. She does not look remotely like Mia in any of the shots. Still, I like the clothes.

    • http://profiles.google.com/withano Loren S

She’s gorgeous, but the bright yellow background makes me think of the poster for “The 40 Year Old Virgin.”

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Awfully pretty pictures though. My I love some of those pieces. sigh…

    • Anonymous

      She looks amazing!

    • Tracy Edmunds

It’s all very Etsy, isn’t it?

      • Anonymous

I never know what people mean when they say that.  Explanation, please!

        • Tracy Edmunds

Etsy.com is a site where crafters and artists sell handmade goods.

    • Anonymous

She is lovely, despite the fact that I’m not much of a fan of the Miu Miu with which she is adorned.

    • http://ldvfashionfix.com/ La:Dolce:Vita Fashion Fix

It looks a little too raw for me. Almost as if these shots were takeouts.. Idk.

    • Anonymous

There is something very Frida Kahlo about the composition of these shots, which I LOVE.

    • Anonymous

I don’t understand why she is made up to be unrecognizable when she is such a breathtaking young woman.

    • Melanie S.

From top to bottom, I see:
      Carey Mulligan
      Emily Browning
      Kirsten Dunst
      January Jones

Nary a Mia Wasikowska in sight.

    • Anonymous

TLo, what you said.  Especially about her romantic face that looks better without makeup, and the impossibility of that for an ad campaign like this.

Still, I like these, except for the first one, which is…I don’t know…just weird-lookin’!  (Word failure.)

    • Rebecca Johnson

The styling detracts from the clothes (which is saying something, because some of the pieces are striking). I keep looking at her hair and trying to figure out how they got it to do that. Add in the rave girl makeup and the clothes become an afterthought.

And is it just me or does the “wrist-hand-purse” area of the last picture veer into the uncanny valley?

I need these clothes in my life. That is all.

      • Anonymous

        ME, TOO!

      • Anonymous

Yes, I’m digging some of it too.

    • http://twitter.com/mellafe natalia h

It feels very Frida Kahlo and that’s not something I think about when I see Mia, but it’s not a horrible photoshoot.

    • Anonymous

If you hadn’t told me that was her, I never would’ve known. She looks great

    • Judy_J

Very nice!  Love the clothes; hair and makeup are great.  Good use of the yellow background…makes the clothes jump off the page.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I love what she’s wearing in the last photo, but the rest of these clothes are hideous. Dowdy and hideous. Mia, on the other hand, looks absolutely beautiful.

    • margaret meyers

I love the folkloric quality, but that its modern.  None of the Prairie dress sleeves and dowdy hems and prim bodices.  I especially like the look with the pink handbag: primitive rose fabric, smocked waist, paperbag bodice, and a maroon bra emerging from the twee.  Hot-cha!

    • Lisa

I really, really just love everything about this – the pictures, the styling, the clothes, the accessories – everything!

    • Anonymous

They dulled everything special about her face. She looks absolutely pedestrian.

    • Anonymous

that 2nd outfit looks like if there was a PR challenge based on what my mom wore when she got married in 79

    • Anonymous

I agree that she looks phenomenal with little to no makeup, but I also think her makeup here is gorgeous and suits her features. It’s interesting, because I think she’s very distinctive-looking but she also has a chameleon-like quality to her.

Am I gushing? I’m sort of in love with her. You probably noticed.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

I agree that this isn’t her best look, but it is refreshing to see her styled some other way than the Twiggy-inspired stuff they’ve been putting her in. Which, frankly, I think she pulls off better than almost everyone else, but it’s just been done to death. These are striking and she looks good in the clothes; the photos are definitely doing what they’re meant to do.

    • Anonymous

I love that second photo.  From the neck down she’s all “Little House on the Prairie”; from the neck up it’s “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”.

    • Anonymous

      She’s got a little giselle in her face—baby G!

    • http://twitter.com/livingtea noori

she looks like january jones in these pictures…

    • Anonymous

I’m a sucker for cameos anyway, but how fun is that jewellery?

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      To die.

    • Anonymous

I think I already wore some of these clothes, not sure of the decade, but years ago. Too stagey. I like photoshoots with backgrounds.

I do like the purse in the first shot, reminds me of a quilt pattern.

    • mrspeel2

I’m really liking this layout and I think the clothes are just gorgeous. Might sound silly, but I’m almost getting an Audrey Hepburn vibe from them. I do agree that she looks WAY different, and in fact, if you hadn’t told me it was Mia, I’d have never guessed it was her. I’d also like ALL of the jewelry, please!

Not to go horribly off-topic, but I can’t wait to see her (and Glenn Close) in Alfred Nobbs.

    • Anonymous

I love this. I don’t really like the garments or the accessories but I do love the shots.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

      beautiful!

    • http://twitter.com/ptliontamer Wilhelmina Frame

Some of the looks very much feel like neo-vic / steampunk translated to ready to wear, which is fine by me.

    • oohsparkley!

She looks beautiful.  These pictures and looks are almost cartoonish, they are so bright and colorful.  I like. They are fun and not too serious.

    • Anonymous

      I love the jewelry.

    • Anonymous

beautiful ad photos, i love the purses esp.  she is such a beauty and a great actress as well- loved her when she played the young gymnast on “in treatment”.  i can’t get the last two photos to download below the faces.  guess i’ll have to check their website to see them all.

      Who is she?

    • butter nut

no clue who she is, but i want everything.
