Katie Holmes for H. Stern Spring 2012 Ad Campaign

Posted on January 25, 2012

Spooky bronze robot girl Katie Holmes gives us her best Blue Steel for the H. Stern Spring ad campaign, photographed by Tom Munro.

Something occurred to us as we were looking at these pics: we don’t think we’d even recognize her if she ever broke out in an open-mouthed smile.  Not that we would expect her to for an ad campaign like this; it’s just that, as self-consciously “intense” as her expression is here, it’s really not all that different from how she looks whenever she’s standing next to her husband or her kid.

The other thing that occurred to us is that there’s such a thing as too much contouring.

Great jewelry, though.

She can’t actually smile in pictures, you know. It would ruin that whole “talking out of half her mouth” appeal she has going for her. What’s that? You don’t find it appealing when functional people talk like stroke victims?

The look of a woman who doesn’t ever get laid.

Suri was immaculately conceived by body thetans.

I find it funny that half of these shots are angled in such a way that the quirked-up right side of her mouth is obscured. It’s a trademark, really. Might as well embrace it.

    • Anonymous

The first one isn’t bad -she’s quite stunning I I was really pleasantly surprised. The rest though are pretty awkward.

      • Anonymous

I think they’re awkward not just because of her but also because her arm is always up in some odd way–why?

    • Jill Roberts

They’ve made her look like Helena Christensen in the Henry Connick, Jr. video for “Wicked Game.”  Wow, I’m getting old.

      • Anonymous

It was Chris Isaak (sigh, getting older).  I thought the same thing, minus those big ole grains of sand on her face.

      • MilaXX

        ^ THIS so much!

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I thought this looked familiar. (And by the way, I tend to confuse Harry Connick, Jr. and Chris Isaak too.)

      • Anonymous

I thought exactly the same thing, and then I thought that Helena Christensen did it better.

At least Victoria Beckham has a better no-smile face; this is plain painful.

I want everything in the second photo.

    • Anonymous

Nothing a good deprogramming wouldn’t fix!

    • Sobaika Mirza

This would all look a lot better if the expression on her face and the nekkid shots didn’t look so forced. Which is odd considering, as TLo rightfully pointed out, this is sort of her default look.

      • Anonymous

I say honey, if you can’t crack a sexy smile, better close you mouth. Her face is all kinds of post-electroshock when she does the parted lips thing.

    • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

Blue Steel, LOL. You guys always hit the nail dead on. I’ve never ‘gotten’ Katie Holmes’ appeal, as she always looks more or less like this, no matter what. I do like the jewelry.

    • Anonymous

Talk about too much contouring, that forth pic looks like she is about 10 minutes into a zombie transformation. Sunken eyes and gaunt face, yikes!

    • http://twitter.com/karenrubyleo Karen

She has one facial expression in each of these photos, I just don’t see her appeal.

    • Anonymous

Haven’t we seen these pictures before?

    • Anna Maria Diamanti

She is ridiculously beautiful. Too bad she’s now devoid of any personality.

    • Anonymous

Some great jewelry that I would love to own if I hadn’t given it up years ago.  Second photo is smashing.  Love the rings and the necklace in the, what?, fourth photo.  I said it before — very Florinda Bulkan and so in keeping with H. Stern.  Bet this is doing really really well as an ad campaign in America do Sul.

is it just me or are these pictures actually not overly photoshopped?  like if you look at her face, you can actually see the natural texture of her skin, it’s not poorless and impossibly smooth.  huh.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

*poreless.  i’m an engineer leave me alone.

      • http://www.celestiae.net Isy

As someone who used to do photo retouching, it is extremely easy to sample a skin texture and use it for the whole face. Since men’s photos/editorials tend to steer away from the creepy android plastic look, they do this all the time when editing men’s photos.

I also got this impression. You can even see her nasolabial folds, which for some odd reason they *always* erase from women’s faces.

If you had a whacko Scientologist husband and probably could never leave him (even if you were deprogrammed long enough to want to do it) without losing your kid, you’d have the same vacant expression on your face all the time too. All that auditing must be getting to her.

      • Call me Bee

Hmmm…if she were Jewish, or Catholic, would her family’s religion even be mentioned?  Can we just talk about clothes and jewelry and leave her religion out of this?  And I’m surprized that TLo have not scolded you (and many other bitter kittens) for commetns like this.  Leave it alone.

        • Anonymous

Hmmm…if TLo choose to scold, it is their blog and their privilege. It is, however, not your privilege to tell any Bitter Kitten to “Leave it alone.” It’s a bit “Queen” Bee. For the record, I do not and never will consider Scientology a religion. Perhaps that is my error, but I know I am joined by France, Germany and Great Britain, among other countries, in thinking it is nothing but a creepy cult; they refuse to grant it religious status also. Now back to fashion as you suggest.

      Dead eyes.

      • Anonymous

        Seriously. She’s a ghost.

      • Pam Winters

The eyes are freaking me out. Is she wearing colored contacts? Why the peculiar blue-gray luminescence? Sometimes light eyes look great; here they have me thinking “She’s almost lifelike!”

    • Anonymous

What is the deal with the fifth picture? Is she wearing a one cup strapless bra? is that a shadow?

      • Anonymous

And that fifth picture (the “topless” one) is the only one I find actually unattractive.

        • fallen_ikon

same here. she looks like she is on the verge of a breakdown in that picture. just utterly hopeless.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Or – is she wearing a strapless bra and they photoshopped out the other side to make it look like she’s topless? A mystery, just weird.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

      She is a stunning woman

    • Anonymous

Must be kind of fun to have pictures of yourself looking that good.

    • Sara__B

If I saw just one of these photos, I’d say she looked gorgeous. Put them all together and they become repetitive, each with the same facial expression and with one hand on shoulder, head, or face. The jewelry seems secondary in all but the second photo. The shots from her previous H Stern campaign seemed a bit more interesting.

    • Anonymous

Great jewelry. I like the hypno ring in the top and bottom photos. I wouldn’t say no to the seashell earrings and necklace, either.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, a bit much contouring, and enough eye makeup to sink her eyeballs back into her head.  Yeesh.

    • Anonymous

Okay, Katie, put your hand on your head! Now your shoulder! Now back to your head! Okay, put the other hand on the other shoulder. Beautiful! I love it!

    • Anonymous

Brunette Cameron Diaz with less sun damage. Not a compliment.

      • Anonymous

Exactly, especially in the fourth picture.

    • Renee Thomas

Ugh. Those dead eyes are scary.
Even before she was Mrs. Cruise I never got the appeal. She came so close to single-handed ruining two movies I otherwise adore: Batman Begins and Wonder Boys.

    • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

When did she turn into Helena Christensen?

    • MilaXX

These are pretty in a generic sort of way.

    • Anonymous

It’s not that she’s not pretty, but I just don’t get the appeal. Lovely jewelry.

    • Anonymous

On the plus side, I can’t take my eyes off the jewelry in these shots.  So, from that perspective, well done Katie!

    • Anonymous

My god, what an inconsistent photoshopping. She sharply veers between sultry and haggard.

    • Anonymous

      I like the rings.

H.Stern is an amazing Brazilian jewlery house. Tehy shoudl have used the gorgeous Brazilian models out there… They woudl have more personality.

    • Anonymous

Poor thing.  She needs to dump Tom and pull a Nicole, going from arm candy to Oscar-winning Star.

    • Anonymous

I dunno. It’s all a bit ANTM for me. Was this shot by noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker?

    • Anonymous

i dunno, i think she looks pretty fierce.

    • Joey Melliza

she looks like a manlier jara sophia in pic 5

    • Anonymous

I dunno.  I think she gives good face.

    • Anonymous

Katie Holmes is cursed with a look that no matter how old she gets, she always look like a teenager. And I mean that in not a good way. I mean that in a kind of creepy way.

      • Pam Winters

Funny, because her husband has the same problem. It’s a “cute” look that doesn’t age well. (I’m now thinking of the Daniel Radcliffe photos earlier and someone’s perceptive observation that he’s going to make a great-looking middle-aged man.)

    • Rand Ortega

What happened to that adorable actress from “Pieces of April”?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

For all the contouring, they still missed a spot on her spray tan.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/GJCUMW5PEKTINI4O5WRUHPTXAE Daniel Flesher

      awkward.

    • Anonymous

I wonder if Tom approved of the 3rd shot from the bottom

    • Anonymous

Love that first swirly ring and how they managed to make her look sort of Charlotte Ramplingish in the “fried hair” shot.

    • Anonymous

      she’s gross

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Her eyes are so beautiful but I am always bothered by the asymmetry of the mouth. I guess she can’t help it (I assume that if there were an operation to fix the nerves or whatever she would have had it). I think the photographer does right to minimize it. I wonder if she avoids smiling because the effect would be magnified if she did.

      • Anonymous

I was pretty much going to say the same thing about her eyes and mouth.

    • Anonymous

She looks the same in every single picture!!! No change in expression at all!! I thought actresses were used for ads nowadays because they could bring some expression. Not her!! Shame, because she is a beautiful woman.

She’s beautiful but I can imagine she’s lost all her sex appeal (if she even had any in the first place). I can’t shake the feeling that her association with Tom has somehow neutered her. Ick.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

I don’t know–some of those looks might be “Le Tigre”? (Which is to say, you guys are *so* right about the one-note face!)

    • mrspeel2

Something occurred to us as we were looking at these pics: we don’t
think we’d even recognize her if she ever broke out in an open-mouthed
      smile.

I remember when she was introduced as Tom’s new “love”. She was so cute and bubbly; too bashful to even kiss him in public until he pushed and prodded her into it. Guess that girl is gone forever.

      Blue steel indeed!

Just as a lot of models make horrible actresses, a lot of actresses make horrible models.

    • butter nut

she’s too busy ‘smizing’ to smile

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

whatever, she is really really gorgeous and i wish she would flaunt it more often

    • Anonymous

I thought she was “Kate” now as per the orders of the boss. (I mean, her hubs, of course. Although perhaps that particular dictum came from *his* boss.)

I also wonder how much Tom had to pay to buy her this shoot.

    • Anonymous

Dang she has amazing eyes. Am I the only one who is surprised Scientology Tom let his wifely object pose with no top on?! Those two give me the heebie-jeebies in the worstest of ways.
