Kate Winslet for St. John Spring 2012

Posted on January 13, 2012

Katie straps on her Serious Actress face for the  St. John Spring 2012 ad campaign, photographed by Craig McDean.

That is some serious face-giving. She’s serving up Oscar Winner on a silver platter with Swarovski crystals sprinkled all over it.

Here is her next soon-to-be award-winning film, Scenes of a Woman Talking About an Ad Campaign:

We joke because we love. And because it’s easy. But she looks great and her points about the customer for these clothes are well-spoken. She’s the perfect face for the brand.

She makes a lot more sense for this brand than Angelina Jolie did. These designs looks better on her than those neoprene sausage casings she’s been sporting at premieres.

      • foodycat

They do look better, don’t they? I think she is maturing nicely – I get the impression she is going to look just like this when she is 50.

        • Anonymous

Well, if Photoshop is still in use when she’s 50, you can count on it!  :)

          • foodycat

Certainly partly that, but I do think she has grown into her features and she will still be beautiful and look like this as she ages.

            • Anonymous

Oh, I agree!  I was just making a joke about the horrible Photoshopping.

    • http://twitter.com/mrsjoe3 Karen Nemelka

Why is she looking so different now than she used to?  Is it because she starves herself now rather than being more normal-sized like she used to be??

      • Anonymous

Her eyebrows might have something to do with it. Now I’ll have to check.

        • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Yeah, I’ve been convinced for a while (in the last 2 years or so) that she’s had some minor work done on her eyes. A small lift or something.

      • Anonymous

Yes, I haven’t figured out whether she’s had a little work done or whether she is just thinner in the face. She also serves up sexy face a lot more than she used to, so that also adds to the different look.

      • Anonymous

i was thinking the same thing.  what is it?

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

Maybe because she is 35 and not in hr 20s anymore? or photoshopping? She doesn’t stave herself – her arms look soft not bony.

        • http://twitter.com/saturnwings Alexis

I think this is the case.  Some people lose the softness in their faces and grow more angular the older they are.  Also, between the lighting and playing up the cheekbones here, she’s going to look a little, well, not like herself.

On the other hand, there was also a ton of work done to these photos, too.  Really, why hire Kate Winslet, who is stunningly beautiful already, when you’re going to photoshop her into looking not like herself?  Why waste the money?

      • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea Jody Lee

I agree, she looks so different, so plastic, it’s strange.  I have the dvd “Sense & Sensibility” and that isn’t just age.  She must have had work done in the last few years, or she’s on Foto by Adobe

        • Anonymous

Don’t think it’s all photoshop because she looks the same in the little movie clip.  I notice that she can raise her eyebrows a little, but there’s no crinkling–so I’m thinking Botox and maybe a couple of other early fillery things.

          • Anonymous

She looks different to me too.  I always thought she looked like someone who would be fun to hang out with but now she looks much harder and more miserable.  No smiles in any photos I’ve seen of her in a long time.

        • Anonymous

I completely agree, something is very, very different.  Watch her movie “The Holiday” from a few years ago and she is completely different.  (I also like to plug that film, it was cute.  And Cameron Diaz never looked more lovely than she did in that movie and had an AMAZING wardrobe.)

          • Anonymous

Agree on Cameron re: that movie. There is a scene where she’s in a car with Jude Law outside the
English cottage and she’s dressed all in white. She literally looks like angel. It was beautiful enough for me to specifically remember it – and I don’t even think she’s very pretty. She should permanently hire whomever did her wardrobe, hair, makeup and lighting for that movie and carry them around with her…..

      • Anonymous

She looks like she’s had just some minor botox and filler — saw it again at the Golden Globes.  She’s still got the expressiveness but she’s working a wider eye.

    • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

      Wow – she looks amazing!

    • Anonymous

Wow, she really is amazingly beautiful.

    • Anonymous

      She’s so gorgeous!

    • http://profiles.google.com/cyprienne123 Cyprienne Zed

I love them all EXCEPT the third pic — seriously, she doesn’t even look like the same person, all that Photoshopping.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

I thought you guys were joking about the video title, but no… Apart from that little moment of ridiculousness, this is a great campaign. Kate Winslet looks gorgeous in these clothes, and I think she’s a much better fit for the brand and the clientele than Angelina Jolie was. This is also a really great makeup look for her, and whoever did that to her eyebrows deserves a raise.

    • Anonymous

Is it me, or does she look a lot like Julliana Marguelis (sp?) in the ads for “The Good Wife”?  Kate is a gorgeous lady!

    • http://twitter.com/Deac82 Mike M.

Its nice to see the star of an ad campaign where you can actually picture her as a real customer of the brand.

      • Anonymous

        Agreed!

    • MilaXX

She looks more comfortable in these clothes than some of the body hugging stuff she’s been wearing on the RC lately.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

After your comments I actually watched the video and it does make sense. I was surprised at first because I think of St. John as “classic” and her as “quirky,” but the idea of having comfortable, well-fitting clothes you can wear a number of ways might be quirky these days.

    • Anonymous

Am I the only one still jarred by how much of an ice queen her public image has become?

      • Anonymous

No, you are definitely not.  It’s all vedy vedy serious and kind of a shame.  And a bit ridic.

        • Anonymous

Especially given her sendup of the whole thing when she guest starred on “Extras.”

No, you are not alone.  I miss fun, quirky, sexy/cute Kate.

      Wow – she looks great!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Wow, she really makes those clothes look beautiful.  I particularly love the two black wrap dresses.

    • Anonymous

      Love her!

    • http://twitter.com/PsychicMuppet Bitsy Carver

I love her but this is stale and really unimaginative.

    • http://twitter.com/maryssaraptor Marissa M

      I have eyebrow envy. Omg.

      • Anonymous

Me too. I can never get an arch like that. :(
I also have always been envious of her lips. They’re perfect.

    • Anonymous

Kate looks and sounds fabulous here.
      Love these *effortless* clothes.

    • Anonymous

She is beautiful and she’s wearing the clothes beautifully.  But honestly, these photos are so ‘Shopped that they make me woozy.  In the second and third photos, she doesn’t even look like who she is.

      • Anonymous

        Yes. This.

      • Anonymous

Hi, I’m Kate Winslet.  I’ve apparently reached the age of 36 without ever seeing the sun or smiling, and therefore I have no wrinkles, pores or other evidence that my skin is real according to these photos.

It’s not enough to be beautiful and talented – YOU MUST BE PERFECT!  Sigh.

    • http://ifyouseekamie.wordpress.com/ Amie

She looks fantastic, but only the first and last ad are ones that I look at and think “Oh, Kate!” The rest are much more about the clothes than the actress/model. The second one all I see is the clothes. The others she doesn’t really look like herself to me.

    • Sara__B

Since Kate Winslet is the new face of St. John, I wish I could recognize the face as hers in every photo. This is a beautiful face but it doesn’t often look like Kate Winslet.

    • Anonymous

She looks fantastic but that fourth picture gives me the giggles … Pink sweater, white shag rug — should feel cozy but instead we get a death dose of  Salome getting ready to ask for the head of John the Baptist!  St John’s indeed!  Second photo is killer.  And, as an afterthought, some nice clothes too.

    • Anonymous

See, I know she’s in her early- to mid-30s and just don’t understand why a woman that age wants to give off a 50something vibe. But yeah, that said, it’s a killer 50something vibe at that.

    • Anonymous

She gets more beautiful the older she gets.

      Madonna + Agron

      Anyone else see it?

      • Anonymous

Yes, I do.  Very astute.  I’ve been seeing Madonna for awhile now with her but your dose of  Agron is what nails it!

      • Anonymous

Third pic: I’m seeing a little bit of Celine Dion. Am I crazy?

        • Anonymous

          I see it!

I’ve also noticed a little bit of JLo in the fourth photo.

Jeeze, they’ve photoshopped her into every famous lady out there all in one spread..

          • Anonymous

Meanwhile, Kate is prettier than all of them, so why would they do that to her? Bastards.

    • Call me Bee

Holy Photoshop, Batman!  She looks great here, and does the clothes justice.  But she hardly looks like her sweet self.

St. John: I would like to see some Photoshopping of wrinkles back into these campaigns so that I will truly feel like I am your target audience. That is all.

      • Anonymous

Amen! Can I double Like this comment??

    • Anonymous

More like, she’s serving up a big plate of ham.  The one on the white rug with the arched eyebrow especially got a guffaw from me.

    • sweetlilvoice

She looks like a Hitckcock heroine…..love it.

    • Anonymous

      She looks like Celine Dion.

And I want to see a movie sponsored by a big label, about an actress/model/musician becoming the new face of said label, with the attendant photoshoots, commercials, appearances.  I’m sure they can work in some feel-good side story about how her relationship/family life suffers and the label graciously lets her out of the contract amicably.

    • http://www.lindamerrill.com Linda Merrill

I think she’s perfect for this brand and makes me want to run out and buy everything. Which a) I can’t afford and b) still won’t fit me. But a girl can dream. I think what makes her a good actress is her ability to look different in different roles, so to compare a “serious face” still photoshoot in her mid-30′s to her 18 year old self playing the lively Miss Dashwood in S&S doesn’t really work. http://pecuniarities.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/sense_and_sensibility_kate_winslet_400.jpg

    • Anonymous

She even looks a little like Kelly Gray in these pics.

    • Anonymous

This is a great pairing. She should wear this style more often as it really suits her. It may not be exciting or edgy but it’s better than her skin tight, “edgier” style she sports these days.

    • Anonymous

Does anyone remember back when companies used MODELS for ad campaigns?

    • http://twitter.com/MissAmynae Amy Putnam Ellinger

Katie-Bear, kindly dump Stella and embrace Mr. St. John.  He’ll treat you better than she ever did.

In simpler words- WERQ that shite girl. Stunning.

    • http://twitter.com/mellafe natalia h

She’s my favorite actress so I can’t not love this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/judi-townsend/578042503 judi townsend

While I applaud St John’s effort to be I a bit more youthful instead of the stodgy image they have – I don’t think Kate is the right choice. While she is better than Angelina Jolie was for the brand and MUCH better than Blake Lively for Chanel. I think Julia Margolies  is a better choice -she plays an attorney on tv and a lot of St John customers are attorney .

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

She looks great, but the clothes are mostly hiddy. I’m OK with the grey wrap dress, but is that a shaker sweater in peach? I had one too, in 8th grade. In 1985. Also, pleated pants?

    • Anonymous

She looks fantastic, and very classy.

    • Anonymous

I like these, but she looks weirdly like Kim Cattrall

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

Um I like these clothes… love to have them in my work wardrobe!

    • Anonymous

Isn’t she a little young and cheeky to be the face of St. John? To my mind they’re a label for the staid 50 plus crowd. Anyway, luv Kate, but kinda hate what they’ve done with her bangs here. They’re almost stiff looking in their extreme sidesweepiness.

    • Anonymous

“You don’t have to be a size 2 or even a size 4…..” Well, aren’t those St. John designers just wonderful! Taking care of BIG women, too!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

Not EVEN a size 4? Well there really is a God!!

    • Anonymous

She looks very beautiful here and certainly fits the brand perfectly.  I’m going to risk angering the fashoin/beauty/perfection gods and say I prefer the old Kate.  I look at these pictures and her recent red carpet appearences and try to reconcile them with the actress I loved in movies like “The Holiday” and I can’t recognize her any more.  Beautiful, yes, just very, very different.

    • Anonymous

Wait, are pleated pants making a comeback?

    • Natasha Fairweather

I would have like a little less airbrushing on her face, though. She’s barely recognizable.

    • Anonymous

What’s the point of hiring a famous actress then airbrushing or whatever the hell they’ve done in some of these photos so that she is unrecognisable? Those second and third pictures could be about ten other famous women. Or is it new surgery?

    • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

FUCKING FIERCE AS SHIT. I especially love the second picture, in the dress with a slit up to there, and in the peach sweater lounging on the carpet.

    • Anonymous

Wish I could afford St. John, and agree with all her points, except: noooo on pleated pants. They really wanted her to push them, didn’t they?!
