In or Out: Sarah Jessica Parker in Tory Burch

Posted on January 27, 2012

Trust a New York City girl to know how to dress for January.

Sarah Jessica Parker attends the premiere of “Smash” in New York City in Tory Burch.

Tory Burch Spring 2012 Collection

We’re so used to ladystars in sleeveless mini-dresses on the red carpets of Manhattan in the winter. Which is funny, because those same ladystars will quite often pile on the fur-collared jackets and knee-high boots when the weather dips just below 70 degrees in L.A. Anyway, it’s been a relatively mild winter on the east coast so far and Sarah’s got it just about right with her sassy little velvet jacket. In fact, we’re digging this whole ensemble, head to toe. Although that belt is a bit heavy and we’re not entirely sure about the three competing browns in her accessories. But we like the dress and jacket, and her hair and makeup look pretty. Kittens make the call:

OUT! Everything looks randomly chosen!

Voting on Kate Beckinsale’s folded napkin dress is still wide open, darlings.

Out– everything DOES look randomly chosen.

      • Anonymous

Ditto.  And is it just me or is velvet on top of sequins just a little much.  The dress is very simple, which is what makes it capable of the heaviness and the sequins.  Add the velvet on top and you’ve lost the simplicity and just gone clunky looking.

        • Anonymous

Agree – to random looking. But she does get points for dressing weather appropriate. If was a a Missoni knit dress with a nice jackets it would be an IN

what’s wrong with her hair? also, the pieces are all nice, but they don’t really work together, especially those shoes- a nice pair of boots might’ve made more sense, with the hem perhaps a touch higher. O U T

Oh dear god.  I already knew it was an Out the second you said SJP.  I really want to love her style, but I just can’t.  This outfit is actually well planned, but she just looks sloppy, like she got dressed in 5 minutes.  And the grandma pumps, they need to go.  Whats up with the cowboy belt and purse? Does. Not. Go.

I know exactly how you feel. I don’t even know why I look at the posts on SJP, because I usually get all wound up about it. This is no different. She looks like she got dressed in the dark. At least she had her hair and make-up done before she picked her clothes out.

        OH, yeah, she’s OUT.

That belt looks cheap, like something that came out of a crap catalog and is probably made of plastic (even though I’m sure it cost more than I make in a month). Her hair is softer, but weirdly flat on top. The center part is too severe, and the color(s) need fixing.

      Otherwise, lovely!

IN IN IN!!! The color of the shoes mixed with the bag and belt is throwing me off a little bit, but not enough to detract from the overall effect. She needs to keep whoever did her hair and makeup for this event close by, because she looks really amazing!

I guess to me she looks more like a “girl on the street,” a woman who happens to be going to a premiere. She seems a bit thrown-together but looking good.  I like the dress or whatever it is better belted on her than loose on the model, but it’s a weird the way a bit of the gray stripe seems to peek out below the belt buckle. I guess that I will go for IN because she is dressed like someone I would enjoy talking to .

    • Sara__B

If ordinary mortals were wearing this to a television premier, they’d look just fine, random accessories and all. SJP probably has closets full of random accessories. I think she should be able to do better than this, but I live over 3000 miles from NYC. I have no idea what constitutes NYChic. I’ll trust SJP’s fashion sense and give her a mild IN.

I was on the fence, but the thing that pushed me over to the IN side is that so many people seem to trash her whenever she appears on a red carpet just because they don’t like her. I say OUT to haters, IN to SJP.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

      Cute. Weather-appropriate. Age-appropriate. IN.

    • marilyn

Out.  If she had been wearing this to visit her child’s school, or some other daytime activity, it would have been fine.  She was at a MOVIE PREMIERE.  She needed to look better.  She is a gorgeous woman.  She looks better in this hot mess than the runway model does.  It is a post-hippie daytime ou-fit, not something for a movie premiere.  Even if it had been a premiere for a children’s movie, it is not dressy enough.  The colors are good for her, the fit is good, and it is put together well.  It just isn’t dressy enough for this event.

As an after thought, she is wearing the same top as the runway model, but a different skirt.  SJP’s looks better.

My thoughts exactly. I don’t get movie premiere from this. Maybe brunch with the girls or shopping. OUT from me, sorry.

I’m not in love with the belt, but her hair looks more healthy than it has in months and her makeup is not as heavy as she sometimes goes. IN

    • Anonymous

In.  No heavy liner, no frizzy hair.  I love the dress and the jacket.  She needed something to give her a waist, but I’m not sure that belt is it.  The shoes were not her best choice.  I will ignore the purse.

    • Anonymous

Belt sucks, but it’s an in for me — and would be almost on the strength of that hair alone. That color is terrific for her.

Cute, but the jacket’s too small.

    • Anonymous

I cannot decide–her hair and makeup (less khol–yea!) look better than they often do, but the jacket sleeves look a skosh short, while the sweater looks too big, so that’s why she grabbed the belt of dubious go-with-it-ness.  (Yes, I know the sweater on the model looks oversized, but this dress threatens to swallow SJP.)  The purpley-blue looks great on her, and you have to give her props for dressing for the weather.

      On to happy hour!

OUT, unfortunately. Hate the belt, hate the bag, the dress (skirt and top) is kind of ugly, and the sleeves on the jacket are too short to be regular length, too long to be bracelet or 3/4 length.

    • Anonymous

This dress was never meant to be belted: it should have been left in its natural state.  Though then it would be a really unflattering length given its shape.  I think this should have been unbelted, tunic length and over skinny black pants.  So I guess I’m saying OUT?

      Yuck!  Out!

    • aimee_parrott

    • Anonymous

I sat in front of her and Matthew at a small theater a year ago.  The weather was ghastly – extremely cold, windy, snowing.  The theater was in an old warehouse and was rather drafty.  And the streets outside were cobblestone.  Everyone else was wearing pants and sweaters and boots.  She had on a dress, stilettos and was sporting bare legs.  She looked ridiculous.  And I imagine she was very uncomfortable, given the weather.  Walking on those cobblestones in such high heels must have been a nightmare.  She’s much more weather-appropriate here, even though she’s still sporting bare legs.  And she’s age-appropriate.

I’m torn – it does look really random, none of the accessories quite work and it’s probably not glam enough for a movie premiere.  But somehow, I like it.  So I’ll give it a very qualified IN.  Oh, and her hair looks amazing.

I wish she’d stick with one hair color instead of three.  It looks sloppy.  Her blazer sleeves are too short, too.

    • Kirsten Kirsten

I want to give her an IN because for once her hair looks fabulous, and from the waist up it’s a stylish look. But once you get to the belt, and then throw in the shoes and the bag, there’s too much miss-match and it just looks cluttered and sloppy.

Seriously, perfection is not required if she looks fantastic, which I think she does.

    • Hilary Sain

Its pretty random, but I kinda love it and she’s rocking it. IN.

    • Anonymous

Not loving it, though it’s nice to see softer eye makeup on her.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

      Love.

    • Anonymous

ALMOST on the outfit …. but definitely IN on the softening effect of the hair and makeup (finally, SJP less ‘aggressive’ from the neck and shoulders up).

    • Anonymous

I think she looks pretty. Love the stripes and the blazer. I’d like to know more about that big necklace I can see poking through the hair. In!

    • Scott Isaacs

Looking good. Looking chic. You might have to look elsewhere for incisive criticism. IN.

    • http://profiles.google.com/jenlindsey Jen L.

      IN. She looks great!

    • Anonymous

She is too tiny for the proportions of the skirt and top.  She looks like a chic bag lady.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

Her hair looks great! Yay for appropriate seasonal dressing. Hate that belt but this  is an  overall IN.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

OUT, that jacket in no way goes with the dress.  The velvet is a terrible idea for a jacket, unless you’re a man in a British manor.  I will give her hair props, though.

IN! Tres chic. I’m envious because it’s the ‘goes perfect together without being matchy-matchy’ look that I strive for each day but, sadly, never feel I fully attain.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1214755227 Meira Niibori

IN, with two caveats:  1) Bracelet length sleeves only work if one is wearing a bracelet, otherwise they just look like the jacket shrank, and 2) the bare lower legs/ankes look strange with the covered-up-ness of the rest of her.  But hair, makeup, jewelry, and outfit are are great.  The browns are fine – I would have left the bag behind, though, but that’s not even to the level of “quibble” really.

    • Anonymous

much better than usual, somewhat better than most others. everything but the shoes, which i & the rest of the world could live w/o.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Out, although I like the pieces individually.

    • Anonymous

She is so little so I can see why she felt the need to belt.  The color and weight of the belt are too much, but I can imagine realizing after you are hoem and getting ready to go out that you need “something” and having to use what you have – I still think IN.  I like that she is dressed for the season!

    • Anonymous

That’s the best her hair has looked in a long time. But it’s still an OUT.

    • Anonymous

Out; she almost earned an in, but the length of the dress and her assorted brown accessories make her look sloppy.

eta: her makeup does look fantastic

    • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

I’d have to say “out”. It looks kind of sloppy and thrown together. Her makeup and hair look excellent, though, but not enough to make up for the outfit and accessories.

    • Allison Woods

      OWT–too sloppy.

    • AWStevens

I am LOVING the texture and color of the hair!

If I didn’t know better I’d say that getup was for baby bump camouflage.  I’m not impressed with it at all.  Just because her husband, Matthew Broderick, is reprising his role as Ferris Bueller for the Super Bowl (GO PATS!) doesn’t mean she needs to disappear into the “SMASH” wall…

      OUT

    • Anonymous

Sorry, can’t concentrate on the outfit, too busy being mesmerized by the vein situation on her feet. Gross.

    • Anonymous

In! Love love love it all!Her hair looks awesome too-SJP is in my opinion the only celeb who can pull off balayage.

    • Anonymous

IN! I think she looks great, love the hair, the coloring really suits her…

    • Anonymous

In. The dress totally works and even that horrid jacket can’t ruin it.

Smash is exceptional. Perfect casting. Great music. New fave show. Please rate so we get at least two seasons of it!

    • Anonymous

It’s a bit on the random side, but she’s giving us the Carrie Bradshaw shtick we all expect from her. She’s got more  right than wrong here, so IN.

    • http://twitter.com/LauraF775 Laura F.

Quietly chic, hair looks great, not spackling on the smoky eye makeup.  Points off for the studded belt, but still IN

    • Anonymous

In, even though she could have tried harder with the shoes.

IN! For hair and make up alone–she looks fantastic! Love the jacket and the dress.

A midnight blue velvet jacket with a brown, black, grey and cream sequined dress accessorized with a belt and bag that would look much better with casual clothes? OUT.

IN! It’s so nice to see someone dressed like a grown-up for a premiere, rather than their senior prom.

    • Samantha Irene

IN! Though I question the shoes…

In! Here in Chicago we love seeing weather-appropriate prettiness.

    • http://twitter.com/capt_shiny Mags

It’s very chic, but I hate the two tone hair. Still, I love SJP and she looks fab here. IN.

    • Anonymous

IN by virtue of the fact that she looks comfy, cozy and casually put together – add there’s ZERO toe cleavage in her fierce shoes!  Plus I really like SJP since her Square Pegs days.  She’s like my imaginary gay guy gal pal (and I’m not a huge fan of SATC).

And if you guys want a more than mild winter you should venture up to the Pac Northwest.  We just got over a three day snowstorm up here.  In fact presently there’s still huge dirty solid ice snow drifts sporadically found around the city as I type this.

    • Anonymous

IN. LOVING the hair and makeup!

    • Anonymous

IN, which is a rare call for me when it comes to SJP. .

      • Anonymous

        Me, too! Mark your calendar!

    • Anonymous

Going with my gut reaction. LOVE the face and hair. This is much softer and prettier than her usual harsh look. But this ensemble looks overdone and as others have said the accessories look a bit too random. OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/RzYoung RzYoung

      In for sure

IN, all is lovely but the bag. Her hair looks enviably lovely.

IN. Despite the random accessories. Love the blazer.

      Not random, just wrong.

    • Anonymous

In, although I wish she’d stop with that pigeon-toed stance.

    • Anonymous

Perhaps bit too casual for a premiere, but kind of cute. IN, but just barely. If her hair were not looking the best it has in ages, the scales may have tipped another way.

    • Anonymous

IN!  Love the jacket and top.

    • Anonymous

      VERY IN! She looks great.

    • Anonymous

IN. i love this, and sort of enjoy the varying shades of brown, especially on the shoes. plus i can’t say no to a velvet jacket, especially one that is either deep blue or purple.

    • http://twitter.com/JudithDeborah Judith Deborah

The blazer is great, but the sleeves are about an inch too short on her. Her hair looks spectacular — those browny-gold chunks are great — and that’s a very flattering lip color on her. She’s looking really pretty lately.

    • Anonymous

I wish she’d chosen different shoes, but otherwise I think she looks pretty great.  IN.

    • http://twitter.com/danielleRwest Danielle West

Out.  I want to like it, but the dress is too long.  with a shortened hem, I might be okay.  love the jacket though.  hate the shoes.

    • Anonymous

      Out! Cute hair though.

    • Tom Shea

IN. It’s Boho chic, but it works.

    • Anonymous

I think it works. Her face is obviously frozen in time due to some sci-fi snafu, but I think the outfit looks nice. IN.

She looks 900% better than that model.

    • Anonymous

IN!  Love the dress and the jacket, like the are-they-brown-or-are-they-olive shoes, don’t mind the shoes aren’t matchy/matchy with the belt.  Only real problem for me is the handbag.  But more pros than cons here…

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

In.  It looks better on her than the model.

    • Anonymous

In.  The hair and makeup seem much improved.

    • Anonymous

In! Big improvement from the runway showing – the accessories make it

    • rachel schiff

Very cool look, but the bag looks like a giant spider she just killed and didn’t have time to dispose of.  Still IN.

    • http://vvatima.livejournal.com/ murt

Definitely in – I really like it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

      NY chic indeed. IN!

    • Anonymous

she looks better than the model, I think. What a weird print – it looks saggy.

    • Anonymous

I’m going to give her an IN for effort because her makeup looks so pretty. She always wears too much eyeliner and this is refreshingly restrained. Also, I kind of like the outfit. The blue is such a nice change from black.

    • Anonymous

sorry, it’s out for me.  it hangs off her all saggy and baggy, the pose is so awkward, the shoes are too big and an off sort of green/brown, and i’m really not feeling the brown leather belt with the deep blue, white, and gray sequins and the blue velvet jacket (which i do like).  the hair just looks confused.  or maybe it’s me.

      • Chantelle James

This look is out for me for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Love the blue velvet jacket and her hair but the gold-studded brown belt, brown purse, and whatever colour those shoes are just doesn’t work.

    • Anonymous

IN. This is the best she’s looked in a while. Love the jacket.

    • http://twitter.com/VeronikaMK Veronika Kaufman

the sleeves of the jacket are too short. Did Austin pick up the bag and belt from Nordstorms bargain basement?

    • Anonymous

TOTALLY IN! I love this. She looks effortlessly attractive and the textures make me want to have a cup of hot chocolate with her.

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

IN – and i *really* like the dark lowlights in the hair.

    • Susan Crawford

I always want to love SJP’s style. I really do. I study every picture of her, I read what her legion of fans say, I know the fashion industry loves and depends on her . . . and I just can’t ever find one thing that truly makes me feel the love. And this outfit is no different. Yes, she gets NYC weather and is wearing a perfectly appropriate jacket. And it’s a great jacket, but there’s something off with the fit. It looks too small – sleeves too short, too gapingly  small across the chest. Saggy dress not helped by unrelated belt or the too-sporty bag. Shoes are nice, but nothing special. Sighhh. Out.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I really like her make-up.  She looks so much younger when she avoids the dreaded racoon eyes.  I don’t like the dress, but I love me a little velvet in the wintertime.

    • Anonymous

      In!

    • Anonymous

OUT. I like all the individual pieces, they just don’t work together.

    • http://twitter.com/beagles Anne Rinaldi

I don’t really care for the belt with this dress.

    • Damien W

The dress comes to the model’s knees, but halfway down SJP’s calf, which sort of makes the proportions with the jacket length look somewhat like “little girl dressing up in mommy’s closet.” But overall, the flawless hair creates a cloud of cool over the whole look.

      IN.

In, but I hate the shoes & bag with the rest of the fabulosity!

    • Anonymous

Yeah; she just had a lazy day, I guess.

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

i cant decide, it could have done without the chunky necklace and that weird looking hobo purse, and the belt for sure. but the dress the blazer, hair shoes and make up all look soo good together. just because i love her so IN

    • Anonymous

Perhaps if the belt wasn’t askew it might be better, but it seems a bit much regardless.  The necklace is over the top – too many glittery things.  Not feeling the purse.  In – because I am happy that someone is making an attempt to dress for the season.  But it’s a weak in.

    • Anonymous

Out!  So messy!!  Where the heck’s her neck?

    • Anonymous

IN! The dress on the model looks shapeless and saggy.  SJP made it look cute and wearable. With her hair and makeup looking so great, I could care less about the competing browns.

    • Anonymous

      out…..
