In or Out: Mila Kunis in Prabal Gurung

Posted on January 09, 2012

Oh, GIRL. We were going to say “That’s not your dress,” but to be honest, NOTHING here is working for us. Perhaps the kittens will disagree. They’ve been known to a time or two before, bless them.

Mila Kunis in Prabal Gurung Mila Kunis attends the 50th Anniversary of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Prabal Gurung.

Yikes on toast. Let’s run this down: We do not like the competing shades of purple in the dress. We also do not like the shape of the dress, which, against all reason and sense, is making the tiny little starlet look thick and somewhat shapeless. We really, really hate the bodice, which seems to be the source of a lot of the problems here. The shape of it is not flattering and we hate the haphazard lacing. The hair looks like her Bumpit is askew and the shoes are making us weep. When you’re wearing an unflattering dress that makes you look a little stumpy, the last thing any girl needs is a t-strap shoe with a double ankle strap, just to divide up her body into even more segments.

No, kittens. We’re firm on this one. Girl is OUT.

But feel free to disagree.

Vote Now!

IN! She’s sexy and daring and a little different!

OUT! Jesus, Mary, and Oprah, this is a tragedy!

Emmy Rossum’s “second place Emmy” dress was voted IN by the commentariat. The finger waves did it for them.

OUT.  I love purple, but the line has to be drawn somewhere!

    • Donna

Yes. Also, when the line is drawn, it should not be zizagging across her chest. I like the purple too, but I agree that these shades aren’t good together. Also hiiiiiii

      • Anonymous

O HAI STRANGER.  Also that thin black belt is odd and unnecessary.

  • Megan Condis

It looks a little better on the model, I think, because its laced up way higher.  Still not the most flattering in the world, but better.  I’m inclined to say “out” in a “girl, that is not your dress” kinda way.

  • Stella Zawistowski

It manages to look slutty and matronly all at the same time. OUT.

    • Anplica Fiore

Yes indeed!  I was interested to note that the runway model had the lacing tighter and didn’t show as much chest as Mila.  Out

  • Anonymous

Out. That literally loose lacing is conveying a figuratively loose message.

  • Megan Condis

Also, delurking to say I LURVE you two!

  • Anonymous

OUT, I agree with you guys about the shape.  Horrible on her.  But I feel comforted that even the truly beautiful and genetically advantaged can look like truly awful.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  She is PETITE and TINY, and these photos have the effect of the dress making her look thick through the middle.  It looks better on the model, and the lace up aspect just looks slutty to me.  She’s better than this.

    • Anonymous

I have NEVER seen a garment with a cris-cross feature that did not look slutty. It’s effect is instant and clear.

      • Anonymous

Not QUITE up there with clear heels, but agreed- usually not a good look.

      • Megan

UGH. Yes. I hate lace up clothes.

  • Sobaika Mirza

That is NOT where a waist and full skirt should meet.

  • Anonymous

Out.  Seriously, how did they manage to make this girl with a gorgeous shapely bod look so thick-waisted and shapeless?

  • Dawn Sinclair

The dress belongs on Real Housewives of Atlanta and makes her look dumpy. The shoes giver her cankles.

    O U T !

  • Anonymous

This is so horrible! The only things I like are her shiny shiny hair and the length of that skirt. The dress itself looks like something a shitty Project Runway competitor made out of yarn and their grandmother’s pleated skirt. Yucky.

  • Laura Schultz

    OUT. Yikes.

  • Liana Brooks

From the waist up I’d almost give this an in. If the lace pattern continue down and had the right silhouette I think it could be a very nice, albeit edgy, dress. The designer started with a good idea, and then grabbed a Walmart skirt and sewed it onto the bottom at the last second. There’s no way to make that dress look good without first burning the lower half. OUT

  • Michelle Argento

Out… the shoelace going down to the high waist makes this look tacky.

  • Tadiana Walton Jones

I was a little bit on the fence until I got to the third picture.  The askew lacing and ruffles sticking up from the belt look like a Project Runway disaster.  From the runway pic, the lacing looks like it wasn’t intended for the purposes Mila used it for. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Well, her lipstick is sort of a pretty color.

  • Anonymous

I agree with everything you said and I also think that the proportions are way off. The bodice seems to be too short; it makes me want to yank her skirt down a bit. OUT

  • Anonymous

I think of “girl that is so not your dress”  as ONLY applying when .. it is SOMEONE’s dress.  This is not   (I guess either half of the dress COULD work with a different other half.  but NOT as it is)

  • Anonymous

Oof, not a fan of the hair. Hate how it’s all flat on top and makes her face look doughy. It is nice and shiny, though.

    Oh, and the dress sucks.

  • Anonymous

I think the model isn’t quite as short-waisted, and the wide belt helped, too. I agree that it looks better on the model – it’s really suited for a different body type.

  • Anonymous

Jesus wept. What IS this disaster. Mila Kunis, go stand in a corner and think about firing your stylist. OUT.

  • Anonymous

OUT, the bodice looked better on the model more laced up, here it just looks cheap.  Everything else isn’t working either.

  • Anonymous

Eeek. This looks a little “Winter Formal” for me. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Plum awful.  The lacing looks like something whipped up with a cell phone lanyard in the ladies’ room in a desperate effort to fix a wardrobe malfunction.

  • Anonymous

    mila, no! OUT.

  • erin l.

Out. The only thing I do like about this is the bodice’s color with Mila’s hair. Looks divine.

  • Lisa Weaver

OUT – that dress has bloat built right into it and who would CHOOSE that look at a style aesthetic?

  • Anonymous

It might have worked better if the purple were as vibrant as on the runway. I hate those furry embellishments at the waist that look like she pulled up a skirt that was ratty at the top and then belted it.  As much as I love Ms. Kunis, this is an out.

  • Anonymous

Oh, so out. The purples don’t work together, and she has redefined the term “cocker spaniel hair”. Do you think SJP paid her off for that?

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT. That skinny belt is a big part of the disaster.

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

And she needs to work on her posture! (Geez, I sound like my mother.)

  • Anonymous

Oh man and here I was ready to say it doesn’t matter what she wears, she’s always in to me. But, uh, OUT.

  • Anonymous

    Too girly for her.

  • Anonymous

OUT! Anything that makes her look stumpy is O.U.T

  • Anonymous

LOL, a very safe one to send out with the “feel free to disagree” invites.  As Oscar Wilde said, “In all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane.”  But this is a no-brainer.  Anyone who disagrees with you is insane.

  • Anonymous

I don’t really dislike the dress, I just dislike it on her.  It is somehow making her look thicker than she is.  Any dress that makes Mila Kunis look pudgy is automatically OUT.

  • Jen Freeman

Out.  I actually like the idea of the dress, but I think that she is too short in the torso for it, and it looked better on the model with the lacing pulled tighter on the waist.

  • Euphory

She’s following what the model wore (“hey doing that made Blake Lively a fashion icon so why can’t I?”), but she’s very different from the model.
Also I think her eye make up is too much.  She already has a natural “heavy” beauty to her (meaning her features have a lot of definitions and are very far from being plain).  She doesn’t need this much eye makeup.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Out. She looks like Khloe Kardashian. Now that’s quite a feat, stylist, whoever you are.

  • Claudia Gilbert

I agree.  That dress is totally wrong for her.  But I quite like the shoes *blush*…

  • foodycat

I can’t disagree. It’s just not right. OUT.

  • amyw

I think it’s an okay dress, but MIla has too much boob for it. The lacings are prettier on the flat-chested model.

  • Alloy Jane

Someone stuck Fergie in a time machine and gave her poorly styled but shiny dark hair.  Maybe Mila is going for Russian Dolls tacky?

  • Anonymous

OUT.  I can live with the competing purple, but not the fact that it makes her look thick in the waist.

  • Anonymous

i dont think the outfit is all that unflattering. its just a really, really tacky design. OUT.

  • ecallaw

I like the shoes and the competing shades of purple, but CURSES on any dress that manages to make Mila Kunis look stumpy!

  • Mariah J

The runway version seems vastly different. Must be the fit and the lighting. I think it could work but not on Mila. OUT

  • Shawn EH

OUT! It is her color, though. Draw string cleavage always makes me think medieval.

  • Anonymous

I kind of like it on the model.  The bodice is laced closed, there seems to be more waist, and the paperbag waist is more…prominent I guess is what I’m looking for.  Looks on purpose?  Anyway, on Mila, it looks like her skirt got bunched up in her belt and the lacing is too loose.  Her waist has disappeared.  The shoes are horrible.  Out.

  • Fifi LaRoux

This whole thing looks sad. Out.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  Even the anorexic model looks heavy.

  • Anonymous

OUT. Funny how the model’s tits are nicely wrapped up but Mila’s are busting out on FULL DISPLAY. Since I’m a dude, I have a question for the ladies: Is it impossible to wear a bra the way Mila is wearing the top or could she have worn a bra? It doesn’t look like she is.

    • Kevin VanOrd

Every time you post, my crush on you gets even deeper.

  • Anonymous

Yikes!  Lace mermaid boobs with frothy lilac sea foam at the waist.  Morticia hair.  I never even got to the shoes.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

This seems to be a dress designed for boyish stick figures (like a Julie Bowen).  Someone with even a wee bit of shape is going to look crazy in this dress.  Mila is a slip of a thing and she looks like she’s thick. The competing color thing is annoying, as is the string cris-crossy business.

  • Anonymous

This isn’t an IN or OUT post TLO, this was definitely a ‘Girl, that is NOT your dress’ post. The proportions are all wrong for Mila’s body. She needs to set that dress free so Blake Lively can snatch it up.

  • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  This is really unflattering.  I like the shoes though.

  • Jane Morris

Sad. It looks like it was made from plastic tablecloth from the 99 cent store and an old pirate costume. OUT>

  • Sara Munoz

    I like the shoes.
    That means OUT.

  • Mori Clark

    nooooo, mila! nooooooooooooooooo!!!! O-U-T.

  • korilian

  • blue

OUT. It’s weird that it looks so bad on her. It’s absolutely stunning on the model.

  • Anonymous

    That ain’t ANYBODY’S dress:  OUT!

  • Amanda

    No disagreement here…OUT!

  • Anonymous

Out.  Just awful.  Her hair and makeup are presentable and competent, but this dress should never have seen the light of day.  Mila’s still awesome,  but this dress is dreadful.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  I don’t mind the shoes too much, and I’m totally a purple girl (LOVE the shade of the skirt)–but this dress is a nightmare.  A hooker’s idea of “classy.”

  • Anonymous

She doesn’t even look like herself, which is not a good thing. The dress is not flattering and neither is her hair or makeup. Out.

  • Leonardo Alves

She’s so very OUT! But as much as I dislike the dress, the model looks cute on it! Mila, on the other hand…

  • Anonymous

    Poor Mila. OUT

  • Sean

Wow. A refugee from JERSEY SHORE.

  • Anonymous

Why is she wearing Tilda’s dress?

  • marlie

So OUT. But the dress is the true crime here. With a completely different dress, the shoes could work. And I like her hair and makeup.

  • Anonymous

wrong color for her; the very plain belt not only does not make the dress the way the more elaborate one does on the model, it instead detracts; length would be better had it not migrated downwards from the original, same w/color of the skirt, although the idiosyncratic lacing works better than the lacing w/the purposefully if inexplicably look too tight buttons. shoes are uninteresting, hair is too limp–

–oh, i feel bad saying all of this. i’m gonna stop. but no, it’s not a great look. she, herself, is still pretty. it’s just the way she’s appointed today. it’s amazing seeing this hereupon that she is also the face in the dior ads [also hereupon]. but she is, there you go.

  • Anonymous

Out.  Her boobs look like they were trying to run away from each other and she was trying to hurriedly lace them down with the result being that random boob placement she has going on.

  • Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

she must to be tinier in order to look good in that dress

  • Judy_J

Awful, just awful. I rather like the runway version, but that poorly laced bodice on Mila looks tacky as hell. I can’t find anything good to say about her look at all.  OUT.

  • Quincy Katz

If it isnt stunning on a 6ft tall tanorexic model, it won’t be stunning on you!

  • Judy S

OUT. Not sure if that is anyone’s dress off the runway.

  • Anonymous

I learn so much from you guys: Bumpit askew. And does Bumpit come from armpits too?
    Shudder, that’s a major Out.

  • Renee Thomas

The thing is ugly, made worse by the fact that it doesn’t fit well in the boobs. In the first close-up shot you can see the extra fabric, and how stiff that fabric is. I think this is making her look a tad thick-waisted.
    Don’t like the hair either.

  • Heather Waddell

Out. But there is ONE thing working for me: the ring. For some reason it works for me.

  • Joyce VG

Oh Mila GURL…OUT.  LOL “Jesus, Mary and Oprah, this is a tragedy!” Thanks that made my day.

  • CQAussie

OUT.  Purple is one of my favourite colours so I don’t mind the purple on purple but that bodice is tacky, the shoes are ugly and her hair just looks odd.

  • Anonymous

If a dress can make a woman like Mila Kunis look squatty and dumpy, the dress should be burned. OUT.

  • Anna Tree

That is not her bodice. OUT.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

OUT. That dress is magically evil. How could anything make that cute girl look so horrible? Get it off her – it might burn her skin.

  • Emily Roach

When I saw this on another site, I felt SURE you would do a “Girl, That is Not Your Dress” on it. So, resounding OUT.

  • Mercy

    horrid.  out

  • Anonymous

Out out out.  She looks thick, and she’s a gorgeous chick, so there’s no reason for that.

  • MandyJane

OUT, definitely. Her hair is sad and limp, and she looks like she’s about to burst out of that dress.

  • Dominique C

Out. It looks alright on the model, though. What did Mila do to that dress?

  • Jen Alien-Spouse

    OUT – Oh Honey NO!

  • Cathy S

That lacing is just terrrible. OUT.

  • Anonymous

    Just… ew…

  • Anonymous

If “Purple Rain” had a wedding scene, this is what the bride’s mom would wear. Gross.

  • Lauren Maier

    What would you call a violet oompa-loompa?  A va-va-voompa-loompa?
Whatever you call it, that’s what she is.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

Cannot disagree. Any dress that makes Mila Kunis look squat is an automatic OUT.

  • Anonymous

Omg no, just no. The dress is tacky and the proportion on that bodice is bad. What the heck is it made of, in one pic it looks all cruched up as she moves? The  bodice also makes her look like she was slouching. I won’t even start on the crap on the waist. OUT

  • Democracy Diva

I hate virtually everything about this dress, so I’m glad you didn’t “Girl, This is Not Your Dress” this post – because it’s not a great dress that Mila’s not right for or not styling properly, it’s just one hot disaster of a dress.

  • Anonymous

Out. You forgot to mention that the makeup is bad.

  • Anonymous

This is a dress meant for flat-chested women. It had to be said. Much of fashion is such. Looks fabulous on the model.

  • Addicted2Glamour

The bottom line for me (there’s that dreaded bottom line again) is that this dress makes the certainly un-dumpy Kunis look like she has a spare tire. OUT.

  • Nancer

Just not flattering. Sorry, Mila, love you – but this is out.

  • Anonymous

OUT. I don’t want to live in a world where Mila Kunis looks heavy. It doesn’t make sense.

  • Anonymous

OUT. It’s an ugly dress to begin with, and unlacing the top makes it worse. She looks like a ho.

  • Robert Sanchez

Out for every reason you guys cited.

  • Erin Leahy

outoutoutout! Its not only a mix of several dresses, but of several bad dresses.  (and awful styling choices..)

  • Anonymous

YIKES! This dress is strictly for the tall, willowy girl with a modest cup size. Or a total whore. But not lovely Mila.

  • Anonymous

Out.  She looks like one of the Kardashians.

  • Anonymous

OUT and agree with you wholeheartedly.

  • Katie Sypher

At least her eyes look divine?

  • Anonymous

Agree with everything you boys said.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

I hate everything, but I really hate the purple. And her hair.

    • Megan

Agreed. And why is her hair so flat? She has great hair.

  • Presumptuous Insect

OUT. Makes her legs look shapely, but yes, the rest of her looks chunky.  Which seems really hard to do with such a tiny skinny girl.

  • Anonymous

Out. You need to be a literal stick to pull off that skirt. And I don’t mind the colours but the straps on the bodice killed this for me, they look ugly.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  this is some serious WTF-ery

  • Sorana Tarmu

    OUT! Purple stumpy mess.

  • Anonymous

    So very OUT

  • Emily

Out.  One of the purples may have worked on her, but that’s the ONLY thing.  The dress is straight up awful.

  • Anonymous

  • Chris

out,  does not look right on her at all.

  • Anonymous

Out. It looks so much better on the model: the lacing on the bodice is tighter and the waist is cinched in more. Those two details make all the difference with this dress.

  • Ally Monge

I actually love the dress…. but on the model. And I love the shoes on Mila…. but her hair looks so flat, and that is SO not her dress. OUT

  • Anonymous

ah geeze, what did she do to her face.

  • MilaXX

OUT! Purple is one of my favorite colors, but that is one ugly dress. The only people who can remotely make it work are at least 5’9″ and a size zero.

  • Anonymous

OUT. How do you make her look thick? The bodice looks bizarre on her and looks better how the model is wearing it.

    Slutty granny.

  • Anonymous

I love those shoes; hair and makeup look nice.  But that dress, for all of the reasons you mentioned!  Out.

  • aimee_parrott

Yikes is right.  She looks terrible.  OUT!

  • Anonymous

    her makeup looks good

  • TigerLaverada

OUT. I hate those cinch-sak waists. They make everyone look thick and bulgy. The bodice is atrocious.

  • Megan Sullivan

Out, it makes her look much larger in the middle than she is.

  • Summer Born

How does she look so short in that first picture? I do like the color story, but this look is OUT.

  • Anonymous

Can’t say it any better than you did – OUT.

  • MinAgain

The colors and the shoes don’t bother me nearly as much as the belt and the lacing.  (Also hate the hair.)  She changed the belt from the runway look, which was a mistake and contributes to making her look thick through the middle.  The gap in the lacing is much wider than on the model, which, in turn, makes Mila look wider, which is quite an accomplishment, considering how tiny she is.

  • Fatima Siddique

Out. Her look says “Jersey Shore”.

  • Anonymous

I barely recognized her.  Que paso chica?

  • Julie Chase

God no. The fabric and color of the skirt is gorgeous but that’s about it.

  • Diana Martinez

Good God.  She looks awful. I can’t figure out WHY she looks awful, since the model looks cute, and lord knows Miss Kunis is teeny, but….  Wow.  That is just unfortunate. =(

  • bloodshothalfblind

holy fucktards OUT.  it makes her look like a bloated old streetwalker.

  • Anonymous

    Gah! My eyes! Out.

  • mcglory13

I like the shoes. Everything else is pretty terrible.

  •árez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Girl, that’s not your look… or anybody’s look. OUT

  • Anonymous

Oh my lord. OUT. I cannot belive that such a pretty girl can look SO bad. I must admit, it makes me feel just a wee bit good deep down inside.

  • Winterhart

I like the shoes.  That’s…. about it, really.

  • Paige Boerman

TRAGIC. It pains me, Mila, but you are OUT.

  • Anonymous

    Ew.  That’s all, just ew.

  • Megan Moore

So OUT. I do kind of like the shoes though.

  • Anonymous

OUT..(and I think she is so cool) and makeup are ok for me, but that dress looks terrible on her, so much better on the model…

  • Anonymous

OUT!  For all the reasons you mentioned.  Ugh!

  • Kelsey Albrecht

Love it on the model….. but on Mila it’s out.

  • penn collins

Have to agree….ewwww… The lacing is just awful and the midriff makes her look…paunchy? def OUT.

  • Anonymous

OUT, the proportions are off here.

i know I’m probably alone here, but even with the bad shoes and shape, I’m gonna say in. i do like the purples and think she probably looked pretty in person. she’s demonstrating style i think. IN.

It looks exactly like a costume from a movie in which Our Innocent but Spunky Heroine and her Perky Sidekick must fashion a cocktail waitress uniform out of the contents of a middle-aged stranger’s [small] suitcase in order to land the job and earn enough money for train tickets out of town.

This is the cocktail waitress get-up they concoct BEFORE the irascible bar manager/gruff older waitress with a heart of gold/middle aged but still handsome and more-or-less gentlemanly customer [pick one, but if it’s the bar owner he must be played by Walter Matthau] sets them straight about the direct relationship between shortness of skirt and size of tips. (followed by a scene in which the skirt is shortened 8 inches or more while on Our Heroine’s body, preferably using a blunt steak knife or an inexplicably handy pair of oversized scissors.)

  • Rain Jezek

WOW I like that purple lace. Everything else is a complete nightmare. OUT.

  • Natalie

OUT. this is so not flattering on her and she’s a gorgeous girl.

  • RzYoung

Disaster, absolute disaster, heartbreaking cos she’s so HAT! What a waste. Out.

  • Anonymous

Well, it looks OK on the model…  But I don’t think that is a dress for most women.  And no, the shoes don’t help.  She looks about 4’0″.  Out.

  • Anonymous

OUT! I’m so sorry that Purple had to be involved in this train wreck.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

    so OUT.

  • R. L.

    definitely OUT.

  • Anonymous

The waist of the dress appears set too high on her, which I think is responsible for that shapeless, thick appearance.

  • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

ME LIKEY.  She looks good enough to eat.

  • Anonymous

Very OUT.  But!  I do like the purples.  And they are both good shades for her.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

  • Anonymous

OUT-it makes her look like she has love handles, which is never a good thing!

  • Anonymous

Mila your Eastern European heritage is showing with this purple selection. That dress looks like it would be perfect for the mother of the bride if the bride was a Russian stripper marrying a mafia oligarch.

OUT!!! Its matronly while being slutty and it makes her look thick.

  • oohsparkley!

Out.  Girl that is not your dress.  Sue whoever brought you that and let you go out.

  • Merneith

Out. I don’t even see how this is a question. The lacing on the lace bodice is the worst, but it’s all bad.

  • Rebecca

She’s a petite girl with average breasts wearing a dress designed for a flat-chested Amazon.

    No can do, punkin.

  • Stephanie Rosario

I think the dress looked amazing on the runway the purples look so vibrant and the lips well to die for… however it’s one of those pieces that can be very tricky to pull off otherwise. I agree in this case an “OUT” is appropriate. Poor girl looks like she got a bad case of the twinkies is this frock.

  • frankystein123

She is not pulling the laces the right way.

  • frankystein123

She is not pulling the laces the right way.
