In or Out: Meryl Streep in Stella McCartney

Posted on January 05, 2012

Oh, Mary Louise. You did it again. You broke out the Stella McCartney uber-puffy sleeves one more time, even after we told you not to.

Meryl Streep in Stella McCartneyMeryl Streep attends the premiere of “The Iron Lady” in London in Stella McCartney and a Fiona Paxton necklace.

We supposed that coat/cape/vest thingie goes some way toward disguising the gigantic sleeves and for that, you should be commended, Mary Louise. On the other hand, you look like you’re graduating from Hogwarts today. Also, your makeup is heavy and those boots give us eye twitches. Love the jewelry, though.

Look, we think any lady has the right to wear what she wants if it makes her feel good and she’s comfortable. But actresses on red carpets promoting their movies are working under higher expectations. Meryl’s the greatest actress of her generation and she’s past the point where she has to obsess over her looks anymore. We like and respect that she’s not a fashionista. Which is why we wish she’d leave fashion to the people who know how to do it. In other words, if you’re going to commit to Stella McCartney on the RC, then you’ve already decided you’re willing to use fashion to promote yourself, so any criticisms we have are coming from inside that box. We liked it better when she was turning to Chris March for her dress needs, because he understood she didn’t want something fussy and could turn out a dress that flattered her while keeping her comfortable. She’d be far better off using talented dressmakers than scoring free merch from designers.

We love you Mary Louise, but we just can’t sign off on this one. Comfort yourself with your decades or worldwide accolades. We’re sure they’ll help to take the sting out.

Vote Now!

IN! Blankets are all the rage now!

OUT! Sweetie, you might be comfortable in that thing, but you look twice your size.

In other bitchy news, Rooney Mara’s Audreybot dress was voted IN, while Darren Criss’ edelweiss suit was voted OUT

The jewelry is fantastic and I love Meryl but this is a definite OUT especially since I thought her clutch was a paper bag (hopefully one wrapped around a bottle of whisky for appearing on the red carpet in that dress).

    • Anonymous

I totally thought that was a paper bag too!  And yes, the dress/cape combo is dreadful. OUT.

    • Anonymous

Actually, the top of the bag should be twisted around the neck of the whiskey bottle.  Please don’t ask me how I know this. ;)

  • http://ymwlt.blogspot.com/ Dawn Sinclair

    Sadly out, very out.

Loves Stella and Meryl but this is NOT a match made in heaven!

    Oh, Meryl, Meryl, MERYL.
I love you my dear, and just, um, erm, uh,…..no.

  • Anonymous

OUT – Even the Goddess that is Meryl Streep can’t wear slankets on the red carpet.

  • foodycat

You know, for a change with Stella McCartney, I actually don’t mind the dress. It’s just not darling Meryl’s dress, I think it is a dress for an edgier, more androgynous woman and the styling is disgraceful.

  • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

Somehow the cape/pashmina thingie makes it work. As you said, they camouflage the ugly puffy sleeves.
Make up is not really good, and booties are ugly, yet, she looks put together, age appropiate and RC-worthy. For that, it’s an IN. Perfectible, but IN.

  • Anonymous

I like the color of the capey thing and the necklace … (I have to stop now because everything else is horrible).  Respectfully, OUT.

    • Anonymous

If she had worn the same dress (maybe without the ginormous sleeves) in that blue-purple color instead of black, and lost the cape, it might have worked.  Also, different shoes and purse and lighter makeup.  So, yeah, OUT.  Her hair is really nice, though.

  • Anonymous

IN. I think she looks lovely. I didn’t realize it was the puffy sleeve dress because of the cape/coat–which looks great, colorwise–and she looks really comfortable and happy. I don’t even mind the boots since it completes the cozy winter look.

  • Anonymous

That’s a clutch?! I seriously thought she was holding a piece of paper. I think me and Meryl need to go get our eyes tested.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s her clutch!? In the fifth picture down where she’s looking at a magazine someone is holding in front of her she has what appears to be a clutch held between her left arm and body. Though I have no idea why she’d be holding a paper bag.

      • Anonymous

She looks like she’s trying to hide it too.  Booze?

        leftovers from dinner somewhere?

      • Anonymous

It looks like a brown envelope to me. Maybe some notes, maybe there was a speech at the premiere?

      • leilah

The paper bag is holding her dress shoes — like any good choir director, she keeps on her walking shoes until she gets to the stage.  Those boots are at such a level of hideosity that Meryl would nevah think of actually wearing them to an “event”….

  • Anonymous

On the other hand, you look like you’re graduating from Hogwart’s today.TLo is on a roll today. LOL. Great observation.

  • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

Out. I keep going between Hogwarts student and regular student at graduation. That’s not good, Mary Louise.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, I replied to to you because I totally thought that clutch was a bit of paper – how bad is that?!- but my reply went up as a separate comment, dammit.

  • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

    Aaaahhh so many layers!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=555593309 Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

I love that “I don’t give a damn” way of dressing. oh so IN!

    • Anonymous

This doesn’t look like “I don’t give a damn” dressing to me.  That would be jeans and Uggs and a big old sheepskin jacket with a scarf.  She’s wearing designer clothes and jewelry and ten tons of makeup.  She looks like she DOES give a damn, but she has no idea what a damn is! :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

She has so many layers on, I can’t figure out what she’s wearing.  But she does like to hide her body, and this outfit succeeds at that.
She is OUT, but that face!  What a lovely woman.  Despite the overly rouged cheeks, overly lined eyes and overly colored lips… her face is timeless and wonderful.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I’m completely confused by all those layers. Is she wearing two capes? A loose jacket and a pashmina? I need answers!

  • Anonymous

Kudos to her for having a face that looks real. But I’m afraid she’s an out unless she is accepting an honorary degree somewhere.

Oh Stella. How I hate your clothes.

    • Anonymous

      Agree on both counts.

  • Anonymous

Out. Oh Meryl, this is the second time I’ve had to vote you Out, and it pains me to no end.

I think the dress might have worked better without the extra bed throw layer.

  • Anonymous

Is she receiving an honorary doctorate?

    OUT.

  • Anonymous

    Out.

Shorten the dress and add more feminine boots then I might be able to overlook the blankets.

  • J Dreesen

haven’t we already covered this? MERYL STREEP = HONEY BADGER.

    HONEY.

    BADGER.

scoring on attitude alone, it’s an IN.

    • Anonymous

Thanking for reminding us again of this.  I can never read “Meryl Streep” with “Honey Badger” often enough.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ellenbehm Ellen Behm

scanning the comments we seem to be in the minority, but that’s exactly what makes me say IN!

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Yes! Meryl Streep don’t give a shit.

  • Anonymous

I give it a very marginal IN on the strength of the jewelry alone.

  • Anonymous

Out for all the observations you made.  I agree: the jewelry is nifty, but everything else is deplorable.  Annie Leung your whiskey-in-a-paper-bag comment is spot on – makes me think of long-ago denizens of the Bowery or not very surreptitious commuters on public transit.  Well done.

  • Anonymous

OUT OUT OUT on the strength of the make-up alone. She looks like a clown.

  • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

Oh, Meryl, this is not for you.  I agree that the blue whatever that is helps, and the jewelry is gorgeous, but is hair is crazy, the shoes are lame, and she looks like she’s got enough layers on to hop on her dogsled for the Iditarod.  Out.

  • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Out. Looks like a graduation gown.

    • Anonymous

I was thinking Choir Robe of the Church of the Depressed.

  • Judy_J

It’s a Stella McCartney snuggie!  Seriously, I do wish Ms Streep would go back to her collaboration with Chris March.  He understood how to dress her in a way that was flattering and stylish.  This ensemble just makes her look lost in a bunch of fabric.  She also needs to use a less heavy hand with the makeup.  The old-lady rouge dots ruin her beautiful cheek bones.

  • Anonymous

Woulda been better without the blanket wrap. Ditch that and those horrid boots and we might’ve had something here – even if it IS the dreadful Stella McCartney! As it is – OUT. Love her, hate the fashion. I think she should put Chris March on the payroll and call it a day. She’s never looked better than in the two dresses he made for her.

  • Anonymous

IN. I don’t like Stella in general but I think that coat/cape covers the dress nicely. The boots are a little bulky but appear to be picked for warmth rather than style and I can overlook them for that. Considering the weather (note all the men in bulky overcoats) I think this is pretty good.

  • Anonymous

I remember how stunning she looked in one of Chris March’s gowns.

    • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

So true — for all the crazy stuff that makes good TV on Mad Fashion, that white gown he did for her 2 or 3 years ago was lovely and understated.

  • Anonymous

OUT – I love Merryl but it looks like she’s wearing choir robes.

  • Anonymous

Meryl. God knows I adore you. Please listen to TLo.
And get softer cheek implants. Love,

  • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

She looks warm! lol.. I think she’s beautiful (even in this getup) but have to agree it’s an out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

Her makeup is done badly(was gthe blush applied by a 5 year old?) and she’s wearing a snuggie.  OUT
And she can do so much better.

  • Anonymous

ha! “blankets are all the rage” — except they’re NOT… love ya, meryl… but, OUT.

  • Anonymous

“graduating from Hogwarts”… hee hee.  You just know she’d be a Ravenclaw too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

    It’s just an expensive Snuggie.

  • Anonymous

Meryl is always in, no mtter what she’s wearing.

  • Anonymous

She looks a little witchy in this. I could actually give it a pass because it almost works (not those boots), but her makeup is soooo harsh. Sorry, OUT, regrettably.

  • MilaXX

OUT, The makeup is too heavy and looks messy. Also I might have given a pass on the cape because it’s cold and out door, but the combo with the dress is too bulky look and the boots are too heavy.

  • Alloy Jane

OUT. Professor McGonagall would not have had hair that sloppy.

    • Anonymous

She’s clearly going for more of a Professor Trelawney look here.  If only her powers of divination were better!

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Hah! But she really needs a few more of those chains to complete the look.  And maybe another shawl or three.

  • aimee_parrott

I love La Meryl.  But what is with this schmatta she’s wearing?  OUT!!!

  • http://twitter.com/lbcubbison Laurie Cubbison

Out. That’s the sort of thing that those of us who are middle-aged and fat get because there’s nothing else in the store, and I’m including that vest thing.

“Judge Streep would like to see you in chambers to discuss sentencing”…respectfully OUT….

    • Anonymous

Another fantastic idea for a TV show that I would absolutely watch.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Congrats on graduating from Hogwarts, but I’m going to have to give you an OUT – Sorry!

  • Anonymous

    Theatre Maven Chic! In!

  • Anonymous

I love her commitment to dressing exactly as she feels like dressing, which ALWAYS includes big jewelry, blanks and shawls, and heavy shoes. You’re 100% right that Chris March understood how to work within her needs much better than Stella does.

I disagree about the makeup, which I like. She’s always so dialed back that a face full of color is actually working here.

    Nonetheless, OUT. Meryl, I’m sorry.

  • Anonymous

OUT. I agree. This is sloppy and unfinished. She needs to call Chris March again. Maybe indulge in a Philip Treacy hat if she really wants to do the British fashion thing.

Also, it’s “Hogwarts”. This bitter kitten loves her Harry Potter.

  • Anonymous

Out, mainly because I can’t tell what the dress looks like.  It just looks like a big flowing mess.  Also, her hair is a mess.  I like the necklace though.

  • Anonymous

I like it overall – IN – but I wish she hadn’t worn those boots.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to give her a tepid IN just because she cuts such an impressive figure in the first shot, despite the ugly boots and disheveled hair.  The necklace and cuff are killer though.

  • Anonymous

In. I like the coat/cape thingy, the necklace, and the V neckline on her.

  • Anonymous

“You look like you’re graduating from Hogwarts.”  BWWAAAAHAAAHAAAA!  And yet, so sadly true.

Clearly, Our Meryl needs to start reading this blog, because if she had read the comments on her previous Stella McCartney outing, she would not have made the same mistake twice.  And this time she compounded the error with a giant, unflattering necklace that just emphasized how fat the whole outfit made her look.

Meryl, we keep telling you and telling you and you won’t listen.  So, without an ounce of guilt, a big ol’ OUT for you.

  • Anonymous

You just know there’s socks under those boots!

Blue, maybe a deliberate choice as she’d been playing Thatch. There would’ve been suggestions made had she worn red!
She does look like she’s graduating. She didn’t need that many layers, it’s chilly, but it’s milder than normal and it’ll be even more so in London.
The hair I can forgive seeing as how it’s been blowing a hooly all over the country.

An in from me, albeit a slight one. Plus from that close-up she looks like she’s still in Maggie mode, so I wouldn’t want to rile her ;)

  • http://twitter.com/theorymeg Megan K.

“Hi, I’m here to sing in the gospel choir.”  OUT.  Too bad, because I lurve her.

  • Anonymous

I seriously can not get over those black boots. Black boots Meryl, really? She would’ve looked better even if she’s worn a pair of cheap black Payless pumps or black flats from Target.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K7VOQSAYZ7H2OBX6LOJNNIBSSE Amanda

“…you look like you’re graduating from Hogwarts today”. TOO FUNNY! I don’t so much mind the top half, but those boots ruin the whole thing for me. I mean I get if you have to start wearing more practical shoes as you get older and maybe high heels hurt your back or knees, but couldn’t you make your dress long enough to cover them? Just sayin…this is an OUT for me.

  • http://profiles.google.com/laurenjeanstm Lauren St Martin

Out. Out. Out. Seriously. She looks like I do when I get out of bed on a cold day. Complete with my hair. Which is not a good thing.

I give you guys an IN and Meryl an OUT. Eloquently put, gentlemen!

Out. She still looks fabulous, but unfair as it is, that look just screams “my weight has reached medical emergency status!”  Which is not the case, here.

  • Anonymous

  • Joyce VG

  • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Out. The Hogwarts reference is spot on and her hair looks like she just fell off her broom. That said, I’d wear this outfit. I love capes and shawls and boots and Hogwarts. And the necklace! But even I wouldn’t wear it on a red carpet for my own movie.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

    Tent. OUT.

  • Anonymous

The boots are what get me shivering.  My only thought is that it was chilly, and she felt she needed all the draping for warmth.  I’m trying think positively here…it’s Meryl, after all.

  • Anonymous

2012 starts off the way 2011 ended: with an OUT for Stella McCartney.  Like the necklace, but was the designer trying to be ironic when she named it “Breeze”? That thing must weigh more than my cat.

  • Sara__B

Meryl Streep is just a bit older than I. She should NOT be wearing makeup like the 80- and 90-year-olds at my mom’s assisted living apartments. Even if she is graduating from Hogwarts today. OUT.

  • Anonymous

As soon as I saw the first photo, I immediately started humming “Pomp and Circumstance”.  She does indeed look like she’s graduating, all she needs is a funny hat.

  • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I kind of like the dress, which means this is the second time in a
couple weeks that a McCartney design didn’t make me want to run from the
room screaming. With the weird sleeves hidden, it looks good on Meryl.

I’m torn. On the one hand, there’s too much going on with all those layers. The boots are a little clodhopper-ish, and she’s wearing too much blush. I agree she’d do well to go back to Chris March for all her styling needs. On the other hand, HONEY BADGER. Does she really have to explain herself to anyone? I think not. That outweighs any fashion mistakes. She’s IN.

  • Call me Bee

Oh I don[t know.  I love this woman, and in my book she may wear whatever strikes her fancy.  The big sleeves didn’t bother me so much last time, so I don’t mind this whole outfit at all.  Absolutely love the jewelry!  Don’t get the bag, though.  Nonetheless–I give her an IN just for being who she is, much like you give Dame Helen a pass no matter what cray-cray outfit she wears.

  • bloodshothalfblind

it pains me to give her an OUT.  but you’re right.  it’s too much fabric.  shes beautiful & amazing.  she doesn’t need to hide herself so much.  that necklace is hot though.

  • Anonymous

I disagree and give her an “IN” although I DO agree I’d like to see her in Chris March more oft.

  • http://twitter.com/rhadon Rosie Hatch

It looks like a graduation gown. Congrats on the PhD! Out.

OUT. Sorry Meryl, dahling, but graduation gowns look good on exactly no one (and that’s exactly what I thought of when I first saw this getup).

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

OUT – It looks like a graduation gown but she’s missing her cap.

  • Anonymous

In. She styled it so it isn’t as ugly as last time. Just use a little bit more hairspray, honey, mmkay?
(Am I the only one who pictures Tom and Lorenzo going through these responses, laptop in one hand and abacus in the other?)

  • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

I still don’t like the way she looks, but I must express my gratitude to TLo for invoking “Hogwarts,” as it made me think of Jason Isaacs (when he’s not wearing that horrendous Harry Potter wig,) and that is a most pleasant thing to consider.

  • Anonymous

It’s London in January, she’s standing outside, and she’s in OUTERWEAR — which is appropriate! I’m on a crusade against starlets standing freezing in sleeveless gowns on the RC next their male coworkers bedecked in wooly scarves and a full-length pea coat. So, call me contrarian, but I’m voting IN.

  • Anonymous

OUT!  Only Helena Bonham Carter is allowed to work the Red Carpet wearing sone wacky schmatta…not the greatest actress of her generation.

  • Anonymous

Definitely OUT! She looks like she’s getting an honorary degree from some artsy-fartsy college. And yes, the clutch does look like a paper bag…

    • Anonymous

I actually don’t mind the dress.  Not her best look but seasonally appropriate and love the jewelry.  The boots are an abomination, though.

  • Anonymous

I admire and respect Meryl Streep and enjoy her on screen.  Greatest actress of her generation?  I dunno.  The Brits have their own fierce contenders on that front.  But best not argue.

Sadly, MS has never known how to dress herself properly and it’s a pity because she’s a beautiful woman.  She was stunning in Bridges of Madison County sporting some very simple but flattering clothes.

I just don’t get Stella McCartney at all.  Really really dislike her clothes and her style.  And that necklace is just all wrong with the black and blue.  I’d give it an OUT except at this level of fame and admiration over the course of such a long career it hardly matters.

Her eyemake-up looks beautiful — too bad her cheeks are overly rouged.

And even if I could forgive her the McGonagall-esque ensemble I cannot get over her make up. There is such a thing as too much rouge, darling, even for a grande dame ssuch as you.

IN because the hair/makeup/necklace (WANT)/blue color of the dress suit her divinely.  Yes the dress is a bit Pomp & Circumstance, but she’s playing the Grande Dame and it suits her pretty well.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I just love her so much, that it is painful to type this, but … Out.  OTOH, I adore that she has real wrinkles and doesn’t care, that her hair is blowing in the wind, and she doesn’t care, and that she’s BYOB’ing this premier.  She’s just beyond words for me, I admire her so much.

Graduating from Hogwart’s indeed! That dress doesn’t even look good on the model. Her make-up could use a little smoothing out, but her face looks fresh, I have to give her that. The necklace is gorg. Still, there’s just too much material in this get-up. OUT.

(so far – maybe she’ll do something I find attractive at some point. But it’s not looking good). On basis of talent, Meryl’s abundance trumps Stella’s lack, so I say IN.

Love the Hogwarts line — it’s so perfectly apt. You guys are the best.

In.  I think she looks really good here — timeless, dignified, beautiful. The colors are great for her, and the university gown-look suits her. I like the makeup and the wind-blown hair.

She tends to like flowy, kind of hippy clothing. She needs to find a designer whose clothes inhabit that space without being dowdy and frumpy.

The necklace is to die for.  The clothes make her look like a hobo.  The woman has never been known for her style.  Thank God she can act.

I hate Stella McCartney design, OUT…that is all.

OUT! Terrible. Who did her make-up a six year old? Sorry Ms. McCartney has yet to impress me as a designer.

OUT, sadly. I love Meryl, but this is a tent with clodhoppers on her feet.

  • Jessica Goldstein

OUT. She should really call Chris March.

OUT. I agree, she needs to work this thing a lot harder since she’ll be campaigning for her Oscar. Step it up!

I like the makeup and jewelry but this looks like a reject from Death Becomes Her.

Out. She looks like a depressed Raggedy Ann, like she always does. I wouldn’t know how to dress for a movie premier either, but if I had her money, I’d pay someone to enlighten me.

    Blue Snuggie. IN anyhow.

“We liked it better when she was turning to Chris March for her dress
needs, because he understood she didn’t want something fussy and could
turn out a dress that flattered her while keeping her comfortable. She’d
be far better off using talented dressmakers than scoring free merch
    from designers.”

    Amen.

And it’s not exactly about being a fashionista, but dressing in an appropriate way that it doesn’t distract form your work. If you dress like shit or like you don’t give a shit, then people are going to talk about how you dress like shit and about not the other shit which you are selling.

  • Emily Roach

Out out out. Too bad. I know she doesn’t care, or have to try (which is great!), but we’re judging FASHION here. So, out.

  • http://twitter.com/rgmx Mercy

Very far out.  Especially not loving the flyaway hair.

  • Terence Ng

    IN.

    Out. Sigh…

Meryl, you are so much more fabulous than this. OUT!

  • Anonymous

I think it’s an “in”…different, and it becomes her strangely….could live without the boots though..

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I blame her daughters for this. They’re influencing her and trying to make her look more modern. And come one guys, Chris M. is fine for the Oscars but those ‘grand dame’ gowns he has been making for her are way too much for a premiere. I hate the boots and her make-up but the jewelry is gorg and the dress is really not bother me that much. IN

OUT.  If I want to compare your look to a Snuggie, there is a problem.

  • Anonymous

    IN!! Diva goddess.

Photoshopping for magazines does a disservice for actors/actresses, and here’s why:
    http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/12/cover-girl-meryl-streep-for-vogue.html

The Vogue cover came out in December. Juxtaposing that with this appearance – and she looks TERRIFIC here (save for the outfit) – she looks like she aged 15 years in less than a month. Again, she looks terrific here. But it’s quite disconcerting to see the outrageous disparities between the recent photo and this red carpet appearance.

    SO out.

MLS, you’re a STAR, not just an actress, and that requires you to dress the PART on the RED CARPET when you’re shilling you’re new movie!  That doesn’t mean yards of sequins and sky-high heels.  But it does require some effort, a nice, tasteful GOWN, proper accessories, a good hairstyle, and makeup.  It’s not that difficult to pull together, especially when one is one of THE most famous and awarded actresses of her genreration!!!  There are myriad stylists and designers who would give their eye teeth, not to mention, left ball, to work with YOU! Embrace all that is available to you in the styling world! You don’t have to give up your personal style, but please, PLEASE, let a professional HELP you!

Totally out.  She needs Chris March and pronto.
