In or Out: Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior

Posted on January 18, 2012

It seems like forever since we’ve done a simple “In or Out” post; one person, one dress, lots of opinionating. Poor Michelle Williams has been waiting five whole days to hear the final tally on her outfit.

Marion Cotillard attends the Chaumet’s Cocktail Party for Cesar’s Revelations 2012 in Paris in Christian Dior.

What a super-chic dress. What a perfectly Parisian sort of look. A costume designer for a rom com set in Paris couldn’t possibly come up with a more appropriate look than this one. We are, as we may have mentioned from time to time, completely sick to death of black lace dresses, but we’ll take this version. Besides, it’s not so much a black lace dress as it is a white dress with some black lace elements. Black tights leading down to black pumps may not be the most interesting way to go and it’s kind of expected, but we have no criticisms of the look. What else would she do with her bottom half in January but wear tights? And once you make that decision, the black pumps become almost inevitable.

She looks really great – from the neck down. This is a cocktail party, so we wouldn’t order her to use a hair and makeup team to do her up, but surely she can manage better hair and makeup than this, right? Also: earrings.

Vote Now!

IN! Oui! C’est si bon!

OUT! Non! Elle va le regretter!

Michelle Williams’ look, which was also, coincidentally, described by us as very Parisian received high praise and a vote of IN from the Bitter Kittens.

Tout en d’accord! Elle est IN!

Sauf les cheveux, bien sur. Mais la robe elle-même est très chic et j’aime beaucoup la coupe. IN

    • Isy

       Le maquillage est parfait aussi!

Je ne parle pas Français. :(

Love the dress, accept the tights and shoes.  But she usually looks so much prettier than this in the face and hair department.  It looks like she got dressed and thought she would have time to stop in hair and makeup before the photocall but alas….

  • Brian @ PWYJudges

Despite the questionable hair/makeup, she gets an IN because that dress is perfect for her.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Exactly my opinion, too – IN, based on the dress, which is adorable.

  • Jen Alien-Spouse

IN – Simply a lovely dress.

  • Anplica Fiore

Love the silhouette and fit of the dress.
A pair of lacy black tights/nylons would have really made this look, but this is still cute.  But all this almost still gets an out due to the face/hair.  Almost but not quite – IN.

    • Anonymous

Wouldn’t that have been lace overkill?

  • Michelle Argento

I just love this look. Very much, an IN.

  • Anonymous

The dress is gorge. Mucho IN

  • Anonymous

Is that an applique of black lace or just a graphic of black lace?  Either way, yes, certainly Parisian rom-com-ready, and adorable.  IN!

  • Gus Casals

She’s IN, but the doctor orders she takes a nap, cause she looks kind of beat.

    • Ceur –

Tell her 8 month old baby that?

  • Anonymous

IN but only for the dress. In every other aspect, Marquess Cotillard is pulling a Jolie.

  • muzan-e

Aw, I adore the makeup! It needs a little more attention given to the foundation, but I think it does its job: brightening with a spot of colour and glimmer, but never fighting for attention.

    • Anonymous

Now that you say that, I agree.  The makeup is understated but pretty.  I think if her hair had been a little sleeker she wouldn’t look unfinished.  She’s a still an IN.

  • Anonymous

In. of course. she is marion cotillard, she is beyond exquisite.

  • Allyson Wells

She’s definitely an IN, but those whispy hairs beside her ears need to be up or down… done this way, they just look like hair growing out of her ears.

  • Anonymous

Oui, elle est tres chic. Quelle elegance!

  • Brad and Anne White

IN. Very fresh and cute as a button.

  • Anonymous

She looks as if she’s trying on dresses, not wearing one out for the evening.

The dress is perfect on her, but she put no effort into her hair/face/accessories – OUT.

  • Mori Clark

needs earings badly, but the rest of it is presh as hell. plus, i have a thing for black stockings. IN!

  • Anonymous

Love everything from the neck down, the hair and makeup are tragic.  Sigh.  I’m not sure which wins out, but I’ll go with an IN just because that dress is perfection.

  • Anonymous

A bit underdone, but I’ll allow it. This is the first time I’ve seen the black tights/shoes work. IN!

  • Jenna Kuhmann

Love the dress.  She has yoga hair, but I-just-got-done-with-yoga hair and not I’m-on-my-way-to-yoga hair, which is kind of terrible.  I guess since 80% of her looks good, she’s an IN.

  • Anonymous

LOVE the dress! Hate the HAIR! At least it’s not that too long droopy hair, though!

  • Anonymous

Stunning. Adore. In. in. in! C’est si bon!

  • Anonymous

I love it, and agree that she needs a strong earring to balance out the heaviness of lower half. I approve of the tights and shoes, it bugs me when they don’t dress appropriately for the season.

  • Anonymous

    in! love!

  • aimee_parrott

    IN, despite the yoga hair.

    • Cathy S

      Agreed. In.

  • Anonymous

OUT – love the dress, but if you’re getting your picture taken on the red carpet, you’ve got to do your hair and make up. Je t’aime, Marion, mais essaye encore!

  • Anonymous

IN. Agreed with you totally – clean up the hair, add makeup and earrings and it would be a WERQ moment to me.

  • Barbora

IN IN IN! Chic Marion :)

  • accidental housewife

Her hair and make-up need some work, but the dress is so very chic, and I love black tights and black shoes. She’s IN.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, tights and shoe combination. C’est tres jolie! However, she looks a bit tired and could use a little more makeup and earrings for sure.

  • Anonymous

IN. I’m not a fan of black lace, but this I like. Oy that hair is bad!

  • Anonymous

IN.  Though, I would have added a delicate bracelet in addition to some simple earrings, and definitely done something less messy with her hair.  Otherwise, very nice.  I like it.

  • Kiltdntiltd

    Mais oui!  Tres chic!

  • Mariah J

    IN Love this!

  • Sarah Michele Ford

Out. Looks like she’s wearing a lace apron.

  • Anonymous

In — beautiful and fun dress.  Love the light in her eyes and the natural make-up.

  • Addicted2Glamour

She looks like the baby-sitter who got into her employer’s closet for a bit of try-on after the kiddies have gone to sleep. This  may not be RC, but she’s standing in front of some sort of banner which leads me to believe this isn’t “just another night out” it’s an Event. And however minor that event may be…Slap a little color on your face sweetie, do something about that yoga hair, change out those “gee, it’s cold outside!” black tights and show that chic little Dior number some respect! OUT.

  • Claudia Berry

    oui, bien sure!

  • Anonymous

in – she’s chic as it is. i hate the black tights, though. white garmets with black tights is one of the ugliest and most popular things in london…it’s so horrific.

  • Ramon

In, but only if I cover her face and just look at the ensemble. Such a beautiful woman, but she just looks like she washed her face off. Hard. Like Joan Crawford doing her beauty regime in “Mommie Dearest.”

  • Anonymous

    Love!  In.  C’est fabuleux.

  • MinAgain

I don’t care for the black tights, but it’s the hair that ruins the look.  Quelle tragique!

  • Anonymous

IN. J’aime la robe beaucoup.  However, I think it would have looked better with sheer black hose (yes, I’m a believer) rather than tights.

  • Anonymous

IN. My kingdom for a red lip here (ARE YOU NOT PARISIENNE, MARION?), but the overall look is tasteful, restrained, and stylish. Also! A knee-length skirt! At this point it’s like sighting a unicorn.

    • accidental housewife

Yes! I do love a red lip.

I’m also thrilled to see a knee-length skirt. Fergie, of all people, wore one to an event sometime in the past few weeks, and she looked great.

  • Anonymous

Out. Ruined the beautiful dress and appropriate tights/shoes with terrible hair and face. Such a beautiful woman in such a great dress looking so sad and tired!

  • Julie Fountain

I think it’s pretty cute, though I agree about the earrings. In, I say!

  • BuffaloBarbara

I’ll give her an in because the dress is fabulous, but I HATE those black tights and shoes with it.  They make it look like the dress is covering up some weird body-grafting, where a young starlet’s life was saved by grafting her onto a sleek black robot at the waist.  (I wonder if the robot has super-powers.)

Her hair is messy and she looks a little tired, but I won’t fault that.  She’s busy.

  • Anonymous

IN – love the dress.  The hair, not so much.

  • Ros Clarke

Hmm.  At one level I like it. At another level, I want to get out my felt tips and start colouring it in.

    • Anonymous

Snorted iced tea at that comment.  LOVE.

  • Anonymous

IN, but the blah hair n makeup made it close.

  • Joanna Schuth

You simply can’t be chic with flyaways all over. Also, I must be the only person to HATE the black tights trends. Out.

  • Nancy Marion

    IN! Adorable, all-around.

  • Anonymous

IN. The dress is perfect for her! She looks relaxed and happy, like she already had one cocktail and is thinking about a third. Yes, the hair and makeup aren’t photoshoot ready, but RELAXED!
    Say it with me-IN!

  • Anonymous

    In, and love her.

I still have to see Piaf, but did you se Midnight in Paris? She’s just delicious in it.

  • erin l.

    In. So chic.

  • Anonymous

In, for that super cute dress!

  • marilyn

Out.  I am getting tired of black lace.  Besides, the dress on which it was streched was very uninteresting, as was the lace.  I don’t like black tights either.  Out, out out.

  • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

    Oh so IN!

  • Anonymous

Despite minimal hair and makeup, and the fact that the black tights and shoes are two much (she could have gone w/ sheer black or no-color hose) she’s got that effortless French chic. IN

  • Brittany Bathie

Adorable, darling, I WANT.  So in.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress. Needs red lips and earrings to make it a big IN, but I’ll give her a small in.

  • Anonymous

In – accessories or no accessories, she looks beautiful.

  • Susana Reyes

    In, no doubt!

  • Sarah Winningham

  • AimeeWrites

Out – not because of the hair, but because of the heavy tights.  Gorgeous dress, the tights as “fashionable” as they are right now, just don’t look good with it.

  • Anonymous

Beautiful. I think the legs and feet are a little heavy but I don’t have a better idea. In for sure.

  • Sorana Tarmu

    OUI! C’est tres chic!

  • Robert Sanchez

I love the dress, but I have to give her an OUT. For one thing, it’s the wrong season to wear a dress like that if you have to pair it with heavy black tights and shoes in order to wear it in public. And I’m sick of stars appearing on the red carpet with dreadful hair. It’s supposed to be such an unstudied look (which took hours to accomplish) as if she just pulled her hair back, as if she’s rushing to the office. Well guess what, you’re on the red carpet! Fix your hair!

  • Lindsey Reeves

Out! I think she looks awesome but it’s not cocktail attire. She looks like she’s going on a second date after a long day of frisbee in the park.

  • R. L.

In.  I also would prefer a more polished look for hair and makeup.  But she looks good in a great dress.

  • Lauren Maier

WAAAAAAANT.  So much want of that dress/ensemble.  My lord, she’s beautiful.

  • Anonymous

This dress looks like the companion piece to one of those “tuxedo” printed T-shirts. Out, out, OUT!

  • Anonymous

Good lord, she looks like she just got done with 14 hours of labor. Hair and makeup are godawful. The dress is pretty, though it looks like it could have been fitted better.

This is Marion Cotillard. She should do better. A lesser mortal might get an in for this, but I say she’s OUT.

  • Anonymous

IN!  She looks divine.  Wish she had somewhat better makeup, but it’s a minor quibble.

  • Aly Light

You give that dress way more credit than I do. It looks like something my mother picked up at Dress Barn in 1993– albeit a bit more fitted. But not all that much more. The make-up, hair, and lack of jewelry really completes the effect. She looks like she’s going to an office party in 1993. And she’s going to be a wallflower when she gets there.

  • Anonymous

IN. Cette robe est parfaite mais je suis d’accord a propos du manque de coiffure, maquillage et boucles d’oreilles.

  • Aly Light

    That’s an OUT, btw.

  • Lily

    In. Definitely in.

  • Laura Schultz

  • Heron

    Tres chic.

  • Joyce VG

IN! I love the dress and I think she looks perfect from the neck up.  Seeing her pretty practically make up free face makes me happy.

  • Anonymous

On the love train… IN.  And I want that dress!

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

IN, because as you said, from the neck down it is tres, tres chic.
But I was on the fence because it looks like she put on her couture at her boyfriends house an forgot her accessories and make-up…and a hair brush. It’s so unfortunate because its really noticeable how much her lack of effort takes this fabulous look down a notch.

  • Anonymous

Cute! Makeup is lacking, but still a clear IN for me.

  • Elena

  • marianna

  • Anonymous

Lighter tights are available out there, so I’m not convinced it was her only option.  If it’s so cold, then why is she not wearing long sleeves?  Also, some earrings and more interesting hair/makeup would have been in order, for sure.  She’s “in” barely….but only because the dress is so great. Above the shoulders and below the knees she tanked, unfortunately.

  • Sara Parker

    In, bien sur.

  • Jamie

IN – the hair could use some attention though

  • Leonardo Alves

The hair also looks very french!

  • Anonymous

    IN. Elle ne regrette rien.

  • Anonymous

In. Great shape, fits well, flattering detailing. Shoes and tights are not good but not bad enough for me to give it a thumbs down.

  • Anonymous

Out.  The construction of the dress makes her seem much wider than she is.  And the complete lack of color together with no makeup or accessories washes her out.

  • Anonymous

    Still adore. IN.

  • Anonymous

    Mais oui, mon petit chou!

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, but the rest of it adds up to OUT for me.

Here’s the thing, the hair & makeup & lack of jewelry (all of which I hate) is very light. The tights and shoes are very heavy. She looks soooo bottom heavy by combining the two that I fear she cannot move, and is in fact glued to the spot.

  • Sara Munoz

    Ugh. I can’t with those tights. I just can’t.
Hollywood please, I am so sick of black tights. Automatic OUT, from this point on.

    • Anonymous

…. as she looks down at her black tights…

  • Vaniljekjeks

In.  I agree, though, needs better hair and makeup.  The dress is lovely.

IN. Loving that dress.  And I usually hate black shoes with black tights, but this works. Girlfriend needs a nap though.

  • wonderdivaEtsy

A hairstylist was absolutely in need — the little flyaway curls that come up around her ears make her look vaguely Vulcan.

  • Anna Maria Diamanti

It’s sickening that she is so gorgeous despite having little, if any, makeup on.

  • Wrenaria

In. Bad hair is not enough to get her an out, in this case. Also I want that dress.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

    in, but yes, earrings!

Like the dress, like the tights (it’s nice to have all the focus on the dress) but the hair makes me sad.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks modern and chic.  IN.

  • Lexie

In. She looks fantastic. But I agree that she could use a pretty pair of stud earrings.

  • Meghan Phelan

Love the dress.  Hate the hair.

  • Anonymous

I love her. I loved the dreamy way she carried herself in Midnight in Paris. tres chic.

  • Liana Brooks

I’m on the fence. The outfit is great, the face… she’s ruining that dress! OUT for the outrage. One simply does not put on a pretty party dress with yoga hair and flu-face. She’s not even trying here.

  • Anonymous

She’s definitely IN, but she really did drop the ball on hair/makeup/jewelry.

Tights are ridiculous at a cocktail party.  (In fact, with a dress, they’re ridiculous pretty much anywhere other than middle school.)  Sheer black hose would have been better.

  • Jill Roberts

Eh.  The dress looks a bit like someone threw up some lace on it and the hair, oy.  Out, but not a resounding one.

  • Anonymous

In.  I love the dress, think tights and pumps were a good way to go with the busy pattern.  The hair is bad and the makeup makes her look like she has a cold.

IN, agree with the black tights black shoes thing, but still this in. I would have loved to see a belt though, something in emerald would have been lovely. her hair is mess, but whatevs IN!

  • Anonymous

Not loving the heavy tights, the hair and it looks like she is on her way to makeup. If she wanted to do bare-ish face, she needed a softer colored outfit. The dress is really cute though. I give her an in, because the missteps aren’t horrible, just more like things someone average and without a stylist would do.

  • Megan Moore

    Tres IN!

  • Anonymous

    so very very IN

  • Jaeda Laurez

I don’t mind the hair, but if you are going to expose your ears like that, it needs some earrings… and maybe a nice bracelet, but I think it looks super cute otherwise. IN

IN!!  I can’t speak French so uh….it’s pretty!  Love the dress and it looks great paired with the tights and shoes.  All the interest is where it should be – the dress.  Her hair however leaves much to be desired.

Charmante! Adorable! Non, je ne regrette rien!

Okay, that’s the extent of my French. And my endings are probably all wrong. Oh well. I think she looks très charmante and complètement adorable. The only thing I would change is the wisps of hair winding around her ears. That looks elfin. And not in a good way.

  • Anna Tree

    tres cute. IN

  • Anonymous

    C’est chic! IN!

  • Anonymous

Out. Sorry, because I LOVE the dress. But the legs are too heavy (visually), she should have been wearing sheer black hosiery, not tights. And don’t tell me it’s winter, her dress is sleeveless. (Another reason, other than pure intensity of color, why the tights aren’t working, here).

That alone wouldn’t have made it out, but combined with the decidedly un-chic dishevelment of the hair, it adds up to out.

Sad, because it’s a wonderful dress and she looks nice in it.

  • Anonymous

Not a fan of the hair, but a definite IN for the outfit. So cute! I love the shape of the dress.

  • blue

IN! But yes, she does need to fix her hair.

  • foodycatAlicia

Out. I like the theory but I dislike every single element.

  • Anonymous

I guess I’ll vote In because I like the dress on her so much, but I’m kind of on the fence. The hair/makeup/jewelry issue is a big one. And the tights are pretty heavy. She could have worn sheer hose. The dress is very light and the legs are so heavy.

  • Anonymous

OUT. This is ridiculous. The lace pattern is cute and non-traditional, but the whole effect is bizarre to me. Like a pinafore.
And I’m with the other BK’s on the messy hair and lack of earwear.

  • Anonymous

IN  She looks good.  However, that dress is boring in general.  It looks like someone stapled doilies to the front and back in an attempt to generate an interesting look. This would surely get someone auf’d on PR.

  • Anonymous

I don’t write French! I just read it. Okay, having established that I’m a gauche moron, what the heck is that weird hair situation over each of her ears?

  • Anonymous

IN because she’s MC and she’s just so chic no matter what. HOWEVER: Not that I have an Atlas Complex or anything or think that the world actually does revolve around me, but just as I am SO OVAH super-opaque black tights with cocktail dresses (which I myself have worn in months past) I hear vague murmurs that sheer black hose are coming back around.  Too bad MC didn’t get the memo in time – this look would have been the better for it.

  • Anonymous

    In!  Tres bien.

OUT = take off those black stockings, its a summer/spring WHITE dress!

  • Coralie

IN. Love the dress and the natural make up (she doesn’t need 3 inches of make up, French girls always go for a natural look). I’m not a fan of her hair either and about the earrings… Marion Cotillard NEVER wears earrings and there is one simple reason : she’s never had her ears pierced!! Definitely IN for me, she’s gorgeous.
