In or Out: Kate Beckinsale in Christian Dior

Posted on January 27, 2012

Yesterday, she went simple and sexy for her photocall. Today, things get a little more complicated.

Kate Beckinsale attends ‘Underworld Awakening’ German Photocall in Berlin in a Christian Dior dress. Shoes by Savaltore Ferragamo and pearl ring by Samira.

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Melissa Tammerijn (NATHALIE)

The red Michael Kors was one of those dresses that doesn’t need a lot of styling (so long as you’ve got the body for the dress). All she needed to make that work was her bod, some big hair, and a big pair of shoes. A dress like this needs considerably more work and we’re not loving how this one shook out.

The dress is very pretty, but she needed really well-chosen accessories to set it off and … well … that’s not what we’re getting. We’re digging that cocktail ring but it’s lost against the white of the dress. Something showier, with a little more color and sparkle to it was called for here. We’re trying to come to terms with someone picking what looks like brown peeptoes to wear with a white dress and we just can’t do it. What the hell was the thinking there? Even if we can accept that it’s a trick of the light and they are, in fact, black peeptoes, that’s only mildly better. This is a dress calling out for silver sandals, there’s no getting around that.

And finally, there’s the Betty Crocker hair. We can only surmise she was drunk when she gave the okay to that one. Oh, Kate. From WERQ to questionable in 16 hours. That might be a T Lo record.

Vote Now!
IN! Simple n’ pretty!

OUT! Half-assed n’ boring!

The Kittens loved Drew Barrymore for taking another risk but they couldn’t get behind her camo gown, reluctantly voting it OUT.

    In. That is just precious.

  • Anonymous

She needed to style herself like the model, maybe sliiightly less intense lipstick. I just can’t get the hair.

    • Anonymous

The model’s shoes were perfect for that dress.

    • Cathy S

      Agree completely.

    • Anonymous

      Less glossy lipstick, maybe?

  • foodycatAlicia

She might have got an in if I hadn’t seen her WERQing it yesterday. As it is, the hair and shoes are unforgiveable and I am concerned her breasts are making a bid for freedom.

  • RzYoung

She looks Stepford in everything she wears, Out

  • Pennymac

Love the hair and makeup. But I’m really over the Origami.

    • Anonymous

me too on the origami thing … sick of it

  • Anonymous

OUT. her hair is freaky. dont mind the shoes or the ring, but im just not a fan of the dress. ‘folded napkin’, once again.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like what it’s doing around her bust.  It looks sloppy, not crisp and neat like it does on the runway.   It kind of looks like a schmatta on Kate.

  • Sobaika Mirza

What is that hair?? That might be the worst offense. Also the lack of any major jewelry.

  • Anonymous

Don’t like the dress at all.  It looks very hotel bedsheet to me.

  • Anonymous

you guys are up early. or maybe you havent gone to sleep yet, like me. for you i hope it’s fun.

it’s a nice dress close up, great work, great detailing. from a distance, though, i get distracted by the enormous folds of pregnancy napkins. is there such a thing as a pregnancy napkin? maybe, but probably not where this one was put. okay, so maybe instead it looks like she’s carrying several light blankets belted to her midsection. & from far away it looks unfortunately like it was annoyed & draped from a sheet. check the hem. odd.

  • Anonymous

Maybe it’s the fact that I just don’t like metallic sandals (sorry, world), but I am choosing to believe these are dark gray pumps and feeling fairly okay about them.

The hair, though, is definitely an issue, and regardless she’s just not carrying off the complexity of the dress. OUT.

    • Anonymous

I thought they were dark gray too! And they didn’t/don’t really bother me at all!

I agree the hair is somewhat a disaster, but I like the dress and I think the makeup is fine,  so I’m actually leaning on the side of an IN.

    • Anonymous

Yes!  I also think they are dark gray.

    • Anonymous

I think you’re right. They’re a dark silver or steel, but they’re just shiny enough to pick up some of her skin tone and it’s giving them a brown cast on film. They probably looked fine with the dress when she was looking at them, though.

  • Anonymous

The dress is very similar to something in the Jcrew bridal line.

  • Anonymous

The dress is beautiful, but a great dress by itself is not enough for an in.  It needs a necklace and better hair.  The shoes on the model were terrific with the dress, hers are not.  Also, brighter lipstick.  In fact, the dress is great, everything else needs work.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out, on her the dress looks like she folded a tablecloth around herself.  And her lip gloss is way too shiny for the rest of the look.

Maybe that dress needs the right kind of lighting to look its best–on the model, it looks almost opalescent, but on Kate, it looks a bit dull.

  • Call me Bee

Hate this dress–looks like the monstrosity that Anthony put together last night.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  The hem is too long.  It’s shorter and more flattering on the model.  This is a case of “Girl, this is not your dress.”

  • Anonymous

Is that white? It looks dove gray to me. Anyhoo – she looks fresh and pretty. I say in.

  • Brian @ PWYJudges

Not a good showing, Katie B. OUT!

  • Anonymous

Why is she wearing Marrisa Tomei’s “My Cousin Vinny” hair?  It is soooo unflattering to her face.

  • Anonymous

Out.  I don’t hate the dress, but something is up with the bust; it’s wilting.  It’s like it needs a good steaming.  The shoes are tragic.  I can’t even figure out the hair.  Is it a ponytail?  She definitely needed a dramatic necklace.

  • Anonymous

Out. It looks like a big white napkin at a fancy dinner party.

  • Christina Hidek

In, but she needed a pop of color like the model had with the red lipstick.  The shoes could’ve been the pop.  I like her hair.

  • Anonymous

as tlo said a while ago – Basket o tits!

  • Patti Lever

The dress looks like it was made from a different fabric on the model, a much more flowy fabric.  I love Kate, I think she is beautiful so I pretty much love her in anything.

  • Anonymous

OUT. She is damn purty, I will give her that, but that dress has too much going on.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the dress on her; maybe it’s the color, or the overdone bodice, but I don’t think it suits her.

I like her hair, but it’s not for this dress.

  • Anonymous

Out. The dress makes her look wide, and it looks like it was made out of brand new stiff bedsheets.

  • Anonymous

She looks hot as all hell, half-assed or not. IN for me.

  • Ebba Svantesson

  • Francesca Lagmay

In– she looks pretty. That’s all she really needs. The shoes are…appalling, but she gets an IN anyway.

  • Anonymous

Hair isn’t my favorite but it’s not *bad* and I think she looks great otherwise. And I actually really like the shoes. IN.

  • Judy S

IN, though it looks pretty lonely on that side of the fence. Her shoe choices on both outfits are poor, but I like the dress on her and even the hair with this dress. There is something strange going on with the top–it has raggedy edges not evident in the runway shot–and the raggedy hair kind of goes with that.

  • Heather McIlrath

hair, shoes, and accessories (or lack thereof) aren’t cutting it! she needed a sleeker, more modern ‘do so the architectural dynamics of the dress could speak. and where are her earrings?

  • MishaFoomin

Out. Why does the skirt look stiff on her but flowing on the runway model?

  • Anonymous

Silver sandals was my thought too. And the dress looks to be more stiff than on the model, how is that? The hemming is especially heavy.

Her face looks a bit too tight and pulled and sanded. Maybe the dress works better on the model because she seems more *natural*?

    Also: earrings.

  • Anonymous

OUT! THe silver sandals would have been a better choice, but they wouldn’t have saved her hair. The necklace on the model looks great, but Kate doesn’t even seem to be wearing earrings.

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind the dress at all, and I rather like her hair, but the styling is all wrong and would it kill her to put on some earrings?  I also really dislike that the large gun in the poster behind her is pointing right at her feet…..although maybe it’s a comment on the shoes, which are very blah.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

Someone made a similar dress on PR Allstars last night, with big sections that stick out in a body-obscuring way. I think it was criticized because they didn’t meet in the back. Anyway, I didn’t like that one and I don’t like this one. I do think the length is flattering for a skirt shaped this way, though. And her makeup is OK.

  • Anonymous

    In… simple and pretty…
    Sum of the parts, baby…

  • Anonymous

I’m not buying her in that dress. She’s not one for complicated dresses, and coupled with that meh styling makes it an OUT for me.

  • Anonymous

Out.  Strapless dresses are boring and are a silly choice for January.  I am also tired of fussy folds sticking out of the fronts of dresses.  Too stiff.

  • Elena

Nothing amazing, but she doesn’t look bad by any means.

  • Stacy Parker Cole

a tepid in.  She looks better in colors.

  • CQAussie

Love the dress and shoes but that hair ruined it by quite a bit…..I’m gonna say….OUT.

  • Anonymous

The runway version looks like a different fabric, soft and floaty, a little sheer. I dislike the dress on Kate, too complicated for no good reason, so heavy. Out!

  • Anonymous

Cute dress.  The hair is just odd.  And I’m tired of women without natural decolotage doing that to their boobs.  It looks painful and it detracts from the look.  OUT.

  • marianna

I think the dress is quite pretty, but the hair is terrible. Out.

  • Anonymous

IN. Not crazy about the shoes, but must admit that I love the hair. Go Betty!

  • nancy

Oh, I like the dress and love the ring, but the shoes are all wrong, and I don’t like her hair at all. So that adds up to an out, I’m afraid. As you guys said, this needs styling and it’s just not there.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know, I like the overall look, so I’m giving it an IN. The shoes read black on my screen…brown would’ve been an ‘interesting’ choice. I kind of like the hair because it balances out the dress……..what I really love is the lipstick color – tres chic.

  • Anonymous

Those shoes…..ugh.  There was potential here.  Alas, she let it slip away.

  • Anonymous

OUT. like you said. I really like the dress. If I could do it again, I could imagine getting married in it. But with the model’s shoes, not hers.

  • Anonymous

    In! Love it!

  • Aaminah Khan

That hair. I just can’t. OUT.

  • MilaXX

OUT I hate the hair, the dress is just okay and the shoe/accessories are wrong.

  • Nancer

Such a missed opportunity! The dress is gorgeous, but the styling choices were just wrong. So wrong. It’s a real shame.

  • Anonymous

Really great dress compensates for a few missteps.  I’m ok with her hair…looks like a styled, soft and curly pony.  I’m guessing it looks better from the side.  Shoes…bleh.  She does need bling!

  • Sara__B

OUT. It’s not a dress for a woman who wants to showcase her breasts. I don’t especially like the dress on the runway, and Kate hasn’t improved it.

  • Anonymous

That hair is a crime. OUT.

  • Micaela Cannon

A smile would have gone a long way in helping this dress, in my opinion. That surly look she’s going on looks so incongruous with that flirty, feminine, high-fashion debutant dress she’s wearing. I haven’t even really noticed the rest because I can’t help but thinking how bizare she looks with that expression. …Also I feel like this was a really odd choice to wear to an Underworld premiere. Not that she has to dress in a leather jumper or something, but a little harder and a little sexier would be keeping in better image with the character…and would match her facial expression much better.

  • Katie cravens

    love those nails.

  • Anonymous

Out, just barely. The dress reminds me of Anthony’s from PRAS this week, a little. Also, could be the lighting, but the fabric looks like old bedsheets.  Don’t like the hair or lack of accessories.

Her skin and makeup are gorgeous though.

  • Anonymous

Out. It doesn’t fit her chest well, and everything else is just drab. Was the dress setup so delicate that they thought a necklace would cause a boob to pop out or something?

  • Anonymous

Yesterday she looked completely fantastic and I didn’t recognize her. Today she is wearing a meh dress and is questionably styled and I immediately said “look, it’s Kate Beckinsale!” Yup.

She’s looked worse. In. For Kate Beckinsale.

  • Anonymous

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

IN. But she needs some earrings, damn it!

  • Shawn EH

    In! Sweet and fresh!

  • Joyce VG

IN! Funny that looks the construction of Anthony’s dress from last night.  But I don’t like the shoes.

  • Katie Sypher

Theory on the hair: She’s so known for it / into it that she can’t commit to a complete updo? This was the compromise for the neckline?

  • Anplica Fiore

Out – but I hate big bows.

  • butter nut

IN, but reluctantly.  there’s nothing technically wrong with this, it just isn’t right for her.  that red dress was killer.  it was also sleek.  this is too fluffy & fussy & bland.   an earring would have done wonders for this look.

  • Emily

Out.  Like the dress, but hair and shoes don’t go together…

  • mcglory13

This would be helped by some earrings, I think. But I think in. I like her ponytail. It’s fun and makes the dress less bridal.

  • Anonymous

Out.  The boob position here is just awful for a dress with plenty of bodice in the design.  She’s deliberately folded down the “napkin” so we get a good view of the baby-head thing she’s done to her chest.  And the hair and the shiny make up say cocktail-waitress barbie to me.

  • Anonymous

Not so much. The dress is cute but flawed on her, then about every other choice she made tipped the scale against her favor.

And she needs to flog the person that keeps making the questionable shoe choices.

  • Nellie Wilson

OUT. While the dress itself is interesting, there’s no styling at all going on. She put on a nice dress and a pair of shoes she found  lying by the front door and left in a hurry. At least that’s how it looks to me. And I totally missed the ring until you pointed it out.

  • Anonymous

Rumpled sheets and bedhead? No ma’am. OUT.

  • Anonymous

OUT. I am sick of dresses that are essentially simple dresses with a big, vaguely bow-like wad of fabric belted to the front. And then there’s the styling.

  • Anonymous

    Too much dress.  Out.

  • Anonymous

She has worn her hair like that before, I believe to one of the award shows last year.  I happen to like it, and I’ve actually styled my own hair like that before for a wedding.

  • Anonymous

This dress looks discombobulated and awkward. OUT.

  • Anonymous

I just don’t see how this is the same person who was in “Serendipity.”

  • Jane Morris

IN. for pulling off a dress like that at all.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Her face looks great. Other than that I’m quite tired of the origami/napkin dresses. Better shoes might have helped and would it have killed her to wear a great necklace?

  • Anonymous

    OUT> Charmin commercial. Boring accessories.

  • Merneith

    Out, for the styling.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

IN. The shoes don’t bother me. I wish she had a big necklace like the model and for some reason I love the hair. It’s big and bouncy and goes with the dress imho.

  • Anonymous

She looks cute, except for the shoes. IN.

  • blue

IN. I disagree, she looks head-to-toe fabulous.

  • Anonymous

I can’t. I just can’t. I want to call her in, if in a lackluster fashion, but on top of voting in for Ms. Barrymore I’m afraid it’ll make me look as if my standards are slipping.

So I’d call this the weakest possible out.

  • WordyDoodles

The makeup is beautiful and glowy. But the dress! I just find that I’m never on board with dresses sporting giant bows on the front. I can’t see this as origami, even. I also think it’s the wrong color. This could have been so much more graceful in, perhaps, dark gray ombre with lighter and darker parts going through the front folds/bow thing.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

IN.  I like the hair, and her makeup is perfect.  The dress is pretty.  What the hell – I’m feeling magnanimous today.  :)

  • Samantha Irene

Out – and I don’t think the boobage is helping the look. This is not a dress for anyone B Cup and above…

  • Julianne Mullikin

Meh, it could be worse.  I like the dress but she doesn’t pop in it.  Reluctant IN

  • Anna Tree

A lack of anything inspirational or too offensive forces a reluctant IN. I mean, it is snoozeville but not crazytown or uglyopolis and that distinction must be respected!

  • Geno Boggiatto

Not loving it. It could be fabulous, but as it stands, it looks half-assed. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Out. She looks like prom night Barbie with her hair like that.

  • Anonymous

    I like it.

  • Anonymous

Nothing makes me w ant to rant so I’ll be nice and give her an IN.

  • Anonymous

I wish she had more jewelry, but it’s still very cute. IN.

  • Vera E Sticker

I don’t think that’s her dress. And the styling just plain sucks. OUT.

  • Anonymous

    awful hair.

  • Anonymous

I think the dress should have been shorter…

  • VicD

out – half-assed and boring says it all.  She needs that bodacious necklace from the runway.

  • Ethan Barclay-Ennew

IN! you look like a sexy pillow and I love it!

  • Anonymous

The red carpet dress looks silver.  This looks like a tablecloth trick.  I really hate this dress on her.  And her make up is completely washed out in my opinion.  And her hair?  She should sue.   OUT.

  • Anonymous

    Boring and half assed

  • Anonymous

In. She even has extra serviettes in case she needs them at dinner. Oh who am I kidding she hasn’t eaten since last century.

  • Anonymous

In. I think she looks sweet.

  • Anonymous

OUT, it looks like bridesmaid gone bad…

  • Anonymous

Very much OUT.  The dress is too complicated and the hair. THE HAIR.

  • Anonymous

OUT! Fuck these napkin origami apron add-on bullshit dresses already. Tortured.

  • Marcie Dreyfuss

Hate her immensely, but the dress looks amazing on her, I can’t think of anyone else rocking it the way she does. Hair is off-putting, though, and the shoes – ZZZZ. But IN, nonetheless.

  • Mags

Love the dress, hate the hair. Still, I’ll give her an IN since it goes all the way to her knees.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

    So very out.

  • Anonymous

    IN! She needs jewelry.

  • Greg Yoder

OUT.  Not enough elements, and too many of the elements don’t work.

  • Anonymous

Oh, but her face looks SO MUCH better without all that hair hanging down around it. I can’t really tell what the hair do looks like,  but imagine her in a shorter cut. I’m tired of the long extension dead animal look- even when they aren’t extensions.

  • Anonymous

    Feh. OUT.

  • Anonymous

IN. I think this could have been styled better- different shoes, more striking jewelry, but I think she looks nice. I like the color of the dress, it’s different.

  • Barbora

OUT… I dont like this dress and that hairstyle is awful…

  • Anonymous

    Out! It’s boring and awkward.

  • Sorana Tarmu

Dress looks like badly folded sheets. Styling wrong. OUT.

  • Sheri Z

I think she looks fabulous here, but then again, she looks so much like her character, Hero, from Much Ado, in these photos, and I love MAAN (not for Hero, but for B&B, but still)!  She is totally pulling her “Hero” face!

  • Anonymous

i say in.  yes, she needs more and more interesting accessories and the dress looks a little raggedy at the bodice (is that a raw edge?)  but altogether i love the origami dress and she looks fabulous.
