ELLE Magazine’s Pulp Fiction

Posted on January 09, 2012

Oh, we just love this. ELLE magazine has an editorial titled “Pulp Fiction” starring all the ladies from Ryan Murphy’s popular shows (Glee and American Horror Story): Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, Kate Mara, Naya Rivera, Jayma Mays, Taissa Farmiga, Connie Britton, Heather Morris and Sarah Paulson. What, no Jessica Lange? We are inconsolable. If you’re going to restage stills from famous horror films, and if you’re going to include — no, no. We won’t spoil it for you. It’s just that using Jessica for that last homage would have been enough for us to declare that we can die happy now. Still, all the pictures are fun and fabulous. You’re going to gasp at some point. The ones with Connie Britton and Kate Mara are absolutely pitch-perfect.

My favorites are Attack of the 50 Foot Agron, Kate Mara as Cassie, Heather Morris attempting Deneuve, and Connie Briton as mother of the demon child.

Don’t know what Lea Michele was trying to emote but I don’t think it’s working.

    • http://twitter.com/saturnwings Alexis

Totally.  Lea Michele looks great, but her picture was completely not successful.  Crop her face out and I couldn’t tell whether she’s afraid of the monster or awaiting Heathcliff to stride across the moors to her.

The Agron image is definitely good, but I don’t recognize her at all.  (Of course, I don’t watch Glee so don’t have much exposure to her.)

That’s exactly what they tell them in B-Horror acting school.

To be fair to Lea Michele, the actress in the original still wasn’t exactly responding to her creaturely co-star, either. Her shot was a lot closer to ‘failed at sultry in the swimsuit ad shoot” than Michele, who at least looks distressed. Though more in a “Joan of Arc having a disconcerting vision” way than “That black lagoon creature’s got his webbing on my ankle.”

(The Birds photo shows Tippi Hedron) But yes, I demand Lange!

    • Anonymous

      It’s Tippi Hedren, but you’re right. :)

      • Anonymous

I once misspelled my own name. I’m glad I only miswrote one letter!

    • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

      Thanks. Fixed!

  • http://twitter.com/kathyvr Kathy Van Ryzin

Isn’t that still from “The Birds” Tippi Hedren and not Jessica Tandy?

  • Jennifer Falanga

Kate Mara was perfect in the role as Carrie.  And the last one needed LANGE!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

Maybe Lange could have redone one of her own shots from King Kong?  That would be fun.

    • Anonymous

Wow, talk about a missed opportunity. For shame, ELLE!

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Yeah, idiots for sure for missing that boat.

    • Anonymous

Man, I already love this shoot but that would’ve really taken it over the top. (In a great way.)

  • Anonymous

Oh, Sarah Paulson. I have loved you ever since you were Merlin Temple. Love this!

  • Anonymous

Baby Jane!  Baby Jane!  God I love that movie

I can totally see this being the Simpson sisters or the Duff sisters in 30 years

    • Anonymous

This!  One of my all time favorite movies.  A classic!

      • Anonymous

There has never been anyone like Bette Davis, that movie is so great!

  • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

Love it! I want Lea’s swimsuit. And is it just me or does Dianna’s leg look…odd? Looking at it hurts my ankle.

  • J Dreesen

i thought that last one *did* have Lange in it.  that’s how out of touch (and sleep!) i have been lately i suppose.

  • Anonymous

Look at Connie B, modeling and acting in perfect amounts.

Also Lea looks fab, great suit.

  • Anonymous

I was skeptical, but completely won over. Jemma Mays as Tippi Hedren is priceless. I even like Dianna Agron’s shot, it’s just that good an editorial.

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I think that is an amazing photo of Heather.
I didn’t even recognize Naya, and I think that Jayma looks plastic.

Other than that, they did a great job with the shoot.

    • http://twitter.com/ChipsterTM Chipster TM

I think Naya looks like JLo

  • Anonymous

I was blown away they included a shot from Suspiria. That’s a freaky film about coven of witches in an Italian ballet school headed by Joan bennet. Is not that a freaky enough combo for you?..lol

    • Terence Ng

Just be sure to look before you leap…down into a room full of razor wire.

      • http://twitter.com/TorrinPaige Heather Eberly

Death by slinky! Sorry, my Italian horror film nerdism is showing.

    • Anonymous

What about Udo Kier who is one of the creepiest actors I have ever seen.

  • Anonymous

    Lea Michele looks ridiculous.

  • Anonymous

Now THIS is my kind of editorial. Love love love this so much. My faves are definitely Kate Mara, Taissa Farmiga and Connie Britton.

  • Anonymous

Lea Michele has three facial expressions. Shock, slight shock, and trying to be sexy while looking shocked.

  • Anonymous

They are pretty fabulous shots, but if I had a mind to buy any of these clothes, I wouldn’t have the first idea what they looked like.

  • Pinup Ghoul

So great. What a fun idea!

  • Anonymous

It’s a bit literal, but FUN!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I cannot believe it-not one word blogged re:  Eddie & Pats??????  How can that be?

  • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

    Love these!

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

    SPOILER ALERT

connie britton + omen = bahahahaha perfect!

  • Anonymous

Holy balls Lea’s bod looks fab!  What a fun editoral!  And Dianna Agron is giving SUCH MAJOR FACE

  • Anonymous

    Aw, I love Lee Remick!

  • MilaXX

I like this. I didn’t even recognize Diana Argon. Jessica Lange should have been in the Baby Jane picture.

    • Mary McClelland

      agreed!

  • Anonymous

What a fun editorial! The only miss for me was Jayma Mays, my god, wtf did the stylist do to  her? She looks like she could be Tippi’s matronly aunt in the original  film.

  • Anonymous

Evidently, the main direction in this photoshoot had been EYES. BIG. EYES BIG.

  • Anonymous

These are all pretty stupendous…and I’m a HUGE classic film buff, so I’m picky about such things.

Maybe because I’ve just recently seen the film and really liked it…but I think the “Repulsion” one is my favorite.

Would have LOVED to see Jessica as Baby Jane!!!!  If there’s such a thing as scenery-chewing in a still photo, I think that would have had it. :)

  • Call me Bee

Love Heather Morris doing Deneuve!  This was fun–thanks for the memories!

  • Cayla Dugan

These are fabulous but the only Glee girl who looks like herself is Lea. I wouldn’t have recognized any of the others if their names hadn’t been included. What did they do to poor Jayma?

The ladies of AHS all look great. Sarah Paulson’s is my favorite overall.

  • http://profiles.google.com/marteani Barbara Guttman

Lea just looks dropped in after the fact there.  She has no relation to her surroundings.  Jayma Mays utterly fails this one for me though.  She looks like such a wispy, uncertain creature adrift in the water. Not even close.

I like the rest of the shoot quite a bit, I’m a little surprised by how good Heather’s photo is.

  • Anonymous

Catherine Deneuve beats the living shit out of Heather Morris.

    • Anonymous

      Well, duh.

Gotta give her credit that she gave it a try.

  • Anonymous

All the originals, even the drawings, beat the living shit out of the repros.

  • Michelle Lee

Why no Jenna Uskowitz? And Psycho or Vertigo would have been an even better homage, but I guess the shower scene and bell tower probably wouldn’t have been good to stage.

    • foodycat

I think the Jaima Mays outfit would have worked better for a Vertigo homage! I am seeing more Kim Novak than Tippi Hedren there.

  • http://twitter.com/adleredneko Aki

The one thing that truly bothered me was the exclusion of Amber Riley and Jenna Ushkowitz from this shoot.

    • Anonymous

i never wouldve thought of it cos i dont watch television so the shows are not immediately in my head, but you are right.

  • Anonymous

    Poor imitations.

  • Anonymous

i like that they branched out a bit beyond the typical [ie: suspiria].

as a minor quibble, the actress attempting carrie just fades & fades into the background.

it’s odd that movies made when i was a kid have become about as iconic as casablanca but, oh, yes they have.

i do not wanna know that casablanca is approximate in years away from then as carrie is in years away from now but, oh, yes it is.

i do not like that they didnt include jessica lange, i’d like to think inexplicably but, in truth, it’s for obvious reasons & that they turned the face of the one woman who they did include thats over the age of forty [connie britton] into something resembling a vaselined-over powder puff [cf lee remick in the same pose, although w/ real skin].

  • Anonymous

I’d say the Diana Agron & Taissa Farmiga are the most striking.

I hated the Baby Jane, just really disappointed. At first I thought it was because neither of the actresses looked, you know (shhh! whisper) old.  But then I realized that what really killed the shot was not that the actresses were younger/not made up to look old but because their expressions were oddly off BECAUSE THEIR FOREHEADS DON”T MOVE.

Beware the botox, actresses. If, that its, you want to, y’know, like *act.*

    • Anonymous

I agree on Baby Jane, totally. And how sad is it that the younger actresses are already having botox. But then no one today stands on the same stage as Crawford and Davis.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Well, she must have done something right if you didn’t realize that there weren’t two actresses in the Baby Jane picture. :)

      • Rachel Moss

I love how they did that, so much fun!

  • Anonymous

    Yep, these are perfect

  • foodycat

I am so surprised that they missed the opportunity to use that ubiquitous Dolce & Gabbana 2 piece for the Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. That is the appropriate use for that dress and it’s obviously being handed around at the moment.

  • Anonymous

Why don’t any of the Glee girls look like themselves?

  • Anonymous

These are pretty awesome.  As usual, Lea Michele annoys me by ACTING!!!!!  but the rest are cool.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

I want Leah’s swimsuit.  Really fabulous editorial.

  • Judy_J

Tippi Hedren was gorgeous.  I have a Tippi Hedren Barbie doll in my collection.  She’s wearing that green suit and has a bird in her updo.

  • Anonymous

This is really smart and fun.  But, incredibly, even here Lea Michele manages to over-act.  Even when it’s all about her she manages to make it too much about her.

  • Rachel Moss

Oh my gosh, I LOVE these. Heather Morris looks stunning! I wish Dianna had been a bit more GRR in her facial expression… But the only bum note really is Lea Michele, who looks like she’s accidentally lain down in the set for another advert…

BTW, how much do I love Sarah Paulson’s face? There’s something just wonderful about her eyes and mouth… Also Naya looks so pretty and so soft. Glad they went away from the FIERCE look for her.

    Generally gushy happiness here.

  • Anonymous

I guess it is weird that my thought at the 50 foot woman (in both pictures) seems a lot taller than 50 ft – especially the new one

  • Anonymous

Connie Briton FTW!  She looks fabulous, the expression is spot on and the blouse is shown off to great effect. Jayma Mays, however,  can’t touch the original. Her hair looks like it’s ready for the Birds!

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I love the lighting in Naya’s (very Argento!), but wish they hadn’t cast Paulson twice; that would have been the place to throw in Kate Mara, as Bette. But Britton is basically possessed by Lee Remick!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

They all have their points, but I’m saddened they really pulled their punches on the Baby Jane shot

I also think they couldn’t get away with wearing fur for The Birds.

  • Kathleen B

jesus Sarah Paulson freaking rocked it. I feel like she is trying to eat my soul in that pic.

  • Mary Gallagher

As a horror movie junkie & fan of both Glee & AHS, I am loving this editorial! Must go out & pick up this issue of Elle.

I’d say Lea Michele’s is the one bum note, even though she looks beautiful. I just see bad acting. But technically, that does fit the theme (b-movie.)
