Downton Abbey at the National Television Awards

Posted on January 26, 2012

Darlings, half the cast of Downton Abbey walked off the estate to pick up yet another well-deserved award and guess what? They’re all thinner and younger-looking than they are on the show! Those Edwardian fashions are gorgeous but they do tend to be less-than-flattering by modern standards.

Winners of Drama Award Downton Abbey’s Allen Leech, Hugh Bonneville, Lesley Nicol, Laura Carmichael, Sophie McShera, Brendan Coyle, Rob James-Collier poses in the press room at the National Television Awards 2012 in London.

Check O’Brien out! We don’t blame Siobhan Finneran one bit for going the tight dress, cleavage, and puffy hair route. If ever a gal deserved the opportunity to sex it up a little, it’s her. You can read a great interview with her here, by the way. Lesley Nicol’s getup is a bit on the flashy side, but shape-wise, it’s very flattering on her. Laura’s dress is pretty standard but she looks great in it and we love her hair. Rob, you’re disappointing us terribly here.

He looks adorable. Tux is a skosh too big on him, though.

Sophie dear, we get why, like Siobhan, you would want to tart it up a bit, but that is a LOT of makeup for your little face to handle and we’re not really loving the dress, although the color looks great on you.

Hugh’s obvious pride is adorable, but you’re killing us here, Lord Grantham. Put your arms down for pictures.

Brendan looks surprisingly suave – and much thinner.

Oh, Rob. Really?

    I did not recognize O’Brien!!

I know! I just stared at the picture for a few minutes and tried to reconcile the two women in my head. Still working on it.

It’s the cheekbones! Look at her cheekbones. She looks incredible!

O’Brien has a tatt? I’ll never be able to look at her the same way again.

RIGHT?! And EDITH! Holy shit, girl!

      That’s because her hair’s not knitting ;-)

Love seeing the downstairs cast ( and Hughie)! However, like you guys I’m a bit disappointed with Rob. Poor Rob looks a bit like a slob. He’s probably the only cast member who looks better in costume than real life.

    • Anonymous

I thought he looked great in the first picture, but then all the other ones…sigh. What a waste.

It’s kind of like seeing Pete Campbell in real life.

  • Anonymous

Maybe Rob is a method actor who really has to live life as a smarmy douche in order to get fully into the character of Thomas.

  • Anonymous

They all embody their characters so well, it took me a bit to recognize them out of costume. And it isn’t just the costuming, it is the delicious acting that helps transform their looks on the show.

I think they all look fabulous.

  • Anonymous

It is hard to believe that Siobhan Finneran and O’Brien are one and the same.  I like Sophie’s dress but agree that the makeup is a tad trowel-ish, and, of course, I hate her shoes.  They all look so happy, though.  I’ll bet it’s a fun set!

    • Anonymous

“Trowel-ish” is a word I have been in need of.

      Sophie’s hair needs some work . . .

Whoa! O’Brien looks hot! She looks like Connie Britton :O

Also, Rob… :S No belt? Tie too short? Hair all askew? Shame on you! A proper footman would never look like this!

And check out that last picture – Brendan looks like Coach Taylor’s older brother.

I am finding Thomas sooo hot (blushing)… I can forgive the actor anything at this point.

O’Brien! Oh to the Em Gee!  And Rob, Rob, Rob,…..tuck your ill-fitting shirt in, and get yourself to a tailor on Bond St. STAT.

  • Anonymous

I have been in adoration of Brendan Coyle for many a year and it’s great to see him looking sharp in a tux. I am trying not to squee. Rob looks as slimy as Thomas!

  • Anonymous

I think they look gorgeous.  Love the show.

  • Anonymous

Loving what I can see of Sophie/Daisy’s red shoes – surprisingly nice choice with the blue dress I reckon.

And I seriously did not recognise O’Brien in that photo, I was wondering if it was one of the show’s producers or writers for a second! She’s seriously foxy out of character!

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

I agree on the shoes – love those two colors together!

  • http://profiles.google.com/sephski Jennifer Szczublewski

This only intensifies my Mr. Bates crush.

  • Anonymous

It took me three tries to figure out that that was O’Brien.

Loving Patmore’s whole get-up, but yeah, Daisy needed to go a little easier on the smoky eye.

  • Presumptuous Insect

    That’s O’Brien??   *gasp*

Edith looks great.  I saw her in another sexed up photo spread with the three sisters and she has a smoking body, I must say.

  • http://twitter.com/enuma enuma

Siobhan Finneran is the most obvious change from her look on the show, but I gotta give Laura Carmichael a “Hot damn!”  She looks so dowdy on the show.  Even though her clothes are frequently beautiful, those Edwardian hair styles age her something terrible.  Give her a modern bob, and she turns into a stunner.

  • http://twitter.com/madamesuggia Madame Suggia

if you want to see Siobhan Finneran at the start of her career, watch Rita Sue & Bob Too
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091859/
…very north of England in the 80′s and hilarious.

    …Daisy?

  • Anonymous

It’s funny you say they all look thinner — whenever I watch Dowton Abbey, I’m kind of taken aback at how skinny all the women are. Was that really the style in the teens and 20s? Were women, upper and lower class, really so waifish?

I’m thinking of the three sisters, their mother, and all of the younger servant women.

    • Anonymous

      It was the 19-teens :)

      • Anonymous

Yeah, duh, I had a mental block and was thinking of the wrong world war. FIxed!

    • Anonymous

At least for the upper classes, I’d say yes, by the late teens anyway–certainly in the 20s (flappers!). Dunno about closer to the turn of the century.

      • Anonymous

Interesting! Thanks. They still seem so darn thin to me.

      • Anonymous

  • Jennifer Jacobsen-Wood

What, no Mrs. Hughes?  I seriously thought Edith was Anna (Laura Carmichael was Joanne Froggat.) I had to IMDB to double-check.

  • Anonymous

    O’Brien???  Holy shit! Who knew?

  • MilaXX

Whoa! Totally did not recognize O’Brien here. She looks great. I don’t mind Sophie’s dress so much as I hate the giant red, ankle strap platforms she appears to be wearing with the dress.

  • Anonymous

O’Brien is surprisingly hot, for a second I thought that Connie Britten was photobombing the cast of Downton Abbey.

  • Anonymous

I think one of the reasons male Brits so often outshine male Americans on the red carpet is that they’re simply more accustomed to dressing up. (That, and they’ve heard of tailoring.) My ex-pat friends will think nothing of throwing on a tie, a collared shirt and a sweater to run to the market, while I once had a standing, two-year argument with a boyfriend about the need to own one pair of dress shoes, since Vans were not appropriate for every occasion. The cast must be considerably more comfortable here than in costume, and it’s helping them look great.

William looks less Culkinesque with a modern hairdo.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Heh, that’s because it’s not William. That’s Branson.

    • Anonymous

Don’t think William’s in these photos: perhaps you’re looking at Branson?

      • Anonymous

Oops. Disqus was being wonk, didn’t mean to double post!

      • Anonymous

It’s funny, I couldn’t figure out who that guy was–blanked out on Branson’s existence.  Doesn’t say good things about that character . . .

William is much taller. DA paid attention to that particular little detail–footmen were supposed to be tall.  So William towers over Daisy.

        O’Brien–wow!

    • Anonymous

Don’t think William’s in these photos: perhaps you’re looking at Branson?

  • http://twitter.com/vintagegoddess just julie

    They all look great.
I really, really, really like Downton, but it is just not a better TV show then Doctor Who.
I have no idea how it won.
    None.

  • butter nut

holy shit o’brien!  who knew she was a fox?!  daisy’s drowning under all that make-up and fabric.  and poor thomas needs to burn every skinny tie he owns.  also, he looks like he could use a shower.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liz-Norris/26609454 Liz Norris

From certain angles, Rob bears an alarming resemblance to a young John Travolta.

I only say alarming because of what the future might hold.

    • Anonymous

      Also young Martin Landau?

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

William and Daisy look adorable together, though, in a prom-photo kind of way. Love Bates.

  • Anonymous

So funny — and awesome — to see people looking much better in person than on the screen.  Especially after these trashy Hollywood A-Listers who somehow become “fashion icons.” Hollywood magic makes the men all a foot taller and the women thinner and with no pores.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

    Wow, O’Brien is hot!

  • Anonymous

Thanks for the treat, T Lo!  Lesley Nicol’s outfit: I’m not really an Edwardian cook, I only play one on TV. Rob’s outfit: Not only am I a douche on TV, I’m also one in real life.

Love seeing everyone in modern day clothes!

  • Anonymous

Da-yum Daisy and Edith! Daisy is so freakin’ cute, and Edith, I did not recognize ye.  I want Mrs. Patmore to be my mom.

The woman who plays O’Brien looks 20 years younger.  Wow, she is gorgeous.

Guys look very dapper and put together, except for Rob.

  • Anonymous

Brendan Coyle looks so much smaller than he does on the show – especially standing next to Rob.  On the show he looks like such a huge teddy bear and much bigger than Rob.  I would not recognize Siobhan Finneran in real life AT ALL.

    • Anonymous

With Brendan Coyle, it’s all about the hair.  He does not look good with his hair combed back.  He’s cute in Lark Rise to Candleford, which is pretty recent and Cranford.  I was surprised how wide he llooked when he showed up as Bates.  It’s totally the hair.  Guy needs it to flop down a bit.

      • Courtney Ashe

Then you should see the flopping he’s working in The Glass Virgin.

        • Anonymous

Whoa, no kidding.  Just looked at a pix and once upon a time Brendan Coyle looked like the hero on the cover of a romance novel.  Flip that hair, Brendan.

  • Anonymous

    Daisy looks so cute…

  • http://www.kittenmasks.com/ kittenmasks

Is it weird that I can’t recognize most of these people outside of their Downton Abbey costuming? I have to think before I recognize a face.

  • lilibetp

    I REALLY like Brendan Coyle!

  • Anonymous

In the first photo, Daisy looks as if she’s just walked off the gridiron….or popped out of a chimney.

O’Brien is sassy.  As is Mrs. Patmore.  Thomas, button your jacket.

  • http://sharpandkeen.wordpress.com/ katie

can you please only refer to them by their character’s names? ;)

    • Anonymous

I think Rob looks endearingly awkward and clueless. If that’s what he’s really like, then he’s doing a bang-up acting job as Thomas.

  • Anonymous

Oh noes, Daisy, our fresh little flower, looks all tarted up for her junior prom.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I couldn’t figure out why Daisy was the same height as everyone else, when on the show she barely comes up to people’s shoulders. Then i saw her serious platforms!

    O’Brien – daayyyuum!!! Smokin’!

  • Anonymous

I recognized Siobhan because I’d seen pictures of her out of character and knew she was smokin’ hot, but I didn’t recognize Laura as being Edith.  Fabulous.  It’s particularly nice to see the non-glamour girl characters get to glam it up.

  • Anonymous

Branson needs more airtime in S3. That is all.

  • Anonymous

Despite my sometime disappointment with DA, I still  heart Hugh and Brendan damned hard. *sigh*

  • Anonymous

    Wow, O’Brien looks gorge.

  • Anonymous

Brendan is a hottie! Who knew?

Well, we kinda knew, but without the Brylcreem, he looks scrumpdileeicious!

  • Anonymous

I have a crush on Bates. Now I have a crush on Brendan as well.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

I have a crush on the way Anna says “Mr Bates.” :3

  • Anonymous

Love! Though it feels a bit funny not right seeing them in their Edwardian clothes. Probably why period actors get typecast…

  • Anonymous

Now, this is intersting.  On the show, “Thomas” does absolutely nothing for me, zilch, nada.  here, I think he looks very sexy.  Apparently, I like my men a little rummpled, disheveled and meaty.  Oh wait, I already knew that….. I do love the shape and style on “Mrs. Padmore” but I wish the long coat wasn’t leopard.

  • Anonymous

O’Brien…you vixen you…who knew! This was fun. Nice to see the actors in real life…so different. I can’t imagine how uncomfy their Downton clothes must be.

  • Anonymous

    Ooo–Mr. Bates! SQUEEEEEEE!

    Sorry about that.

You know, I have the hardest time recognizing these people–wow, do they look different.

  • http://democracydiva.com/ Democracy Diva

I just got into Downton Abbey recently, so this is my first time seeing any of them in non-period attire since getting into the show. IT’S BLOWING MY FUCKING MIND.

Oh, and because it needs to be said: GET IT, MRS. PADMORE, IN YOUR LEOPARD PRINT! YOU GO GIRL!

  • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

Rob looks pissed, doesn’t he? Bet he was down the pub earlier…

    • Anonymous

I had to think for a minute before I realized you meant English pissed and not American pissed…

  • Sam Hawk

Considering how extremely formal Rob James-Collier is in most of the episodes, I get why he went a bit scruffy.  Besides, he’s so hot, he can wear anything he wants, as far as I’m concerned.

  • http://twitter.com/annalizlobo Anna Elizabeth

I work for Chico’s, so I’ve developed a hatred for leopard print that borders on an allergic reaction, but Mrs. Patmore’s getup is growing on me. I love the shoes.

And damn, O’Brien is looking fine! Siobhan Finneran is smokin’. Also, I seriously covet Laura’s hair, dress and shoes. Mostly the hair. I kind of like Sophie’s dress, although the way the bodice is designed just makes it look like it’s meant for someone about five cup sizes bigger, and I think I would even have liked the shoes with it if they were a different color.

Rob just looks unwashed. He looks like he smells like Robert Pattinson.

  • Anonymous

Damn, O’Brien!!! She done brought it.

I have a small collection of Victorian and Edwardian jewelry that has been sitting in my jewelry box since I started working at home. No more. I’m gonna start wearing it every day now, even if nobody ever sees me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

Ooh, yes! Do that. When I stay home to write sometimes I will put on a favorite pair of earrings, or lipstick just to remind myself I’m awake and ready to take on the world. And jewelry from that era is so beautiful.

  • Anonymous

Awww Brendan is adorable. LUV him.

  • Anonymous

I thought O’Brien was Connie Britton!
