Demi Moore for Harper’s Bazaar

Posted on January 05, 2012

Right on time, with the breakup still fresh in everyone’s minds, Demi gets her “As a mother, a person, and an entertainer” moment; that thing designed to show the world after your breakup that you are both defiantly strong and willing to move on, and also that you’re as fuckable as you ever were. Part of a grand old Hollywood tradition. When you break up, you call your friends; when celebrities break up, they call their agent.

Demi Moore featured in the February 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, photographed by Cedric Buchet.

Hair: Akki. Makeup: Jo Strettell for Chanel.

“I have had a love-hate relationship with my body. When I’m at the greatest odds with my body, it’s usually because I feel my body’s betraying me, whether that’s been in the past, struggling with my weight and feeling that I couldn’t eat what I wanted to eat, or that I couldn’t get my body to do what I wanted it to do.”

“I think I sit today in a place of greater acceptance of my body, and that includes not just my weight but all of the things that come with your changing body as you age to now experiencing my body as extremely thin — thin in a way that I never imagined somebody would be saying to me, “You’re too thin, and you don’t look good.”

She sounds very …. focused …on her body, yes?

Nice pictures, though. Love the Gucci on her.

She looks really gorgeous here.  I have thought lately that she was extremely thin but here she looks perfect.

  • Anonymous

She looks freakin’ AMAZING. That Gucci! *swoon*

  • Anonymous

LOVE the Balmain.  I would cut a bitch for that dress.

    • Anonymous

alright, i’m ready.  the jacket looks too fabulous.

  • Anonymous

That is one fugly cover. The weird pose, the background, the color of the titles is all quite bad and adds up to a very unattractive image.

    • Anonymous

And where the hell is her left arm?

  • Anonymous

The swim suit looks horrible on the hanger model but incredible on Demi.

  • Anonymous

the “showing the armpit” pose…. drives me nuts! i don’t understand the appeal of it, and still you see it everywhere!

    • Anonymous

to be fair at least it is covered with her hair (and not arm pit hair).  my legs look as good as ever – but I hate that I have become that woman who cannot stand my inner upper arms

    • Alloy Jane

It’s actually the “lift my tits” pose.  And while she looks nice, there is a distinct aura of desperation, compounded by her total insecurity.  Sad. I wish she could remember that she played motherfucking G.I. Jane and let all the aging crap go.  It’s natural and it happens, big deal.

  • Anonymous

oh gosh! the original JLo “as a mother, entertainer and person” cover shot also had the armpit pose!!! hahahhaha…. it must be break-up induced?????

  • J Dreesen

i think she could stand to eat a sandwich or two.  the straight-on posing was definitely done to make her look as broad as possible despite her recent plummet in weight.

    • Anonymous

Who says they didn’t photoshop her to look healthier and wider… She has been getting all kinds of bad press for being a lollipop.

  • Patti Lever

So tired of skinny bitches who really know they are skinny and hot whining about how they have body issues.  Please, when I was skinny and hot I knew it and worked it. You know you’re hot, you dress to make the most of your body and show it off because you know it looks good.

    • Anonymous

How nice for you. Some of us, on the other hand, have had some major psychological struggles! It is possible that she does too!

      • MilaXX

The problem is the interview reads as if she’s trying to blame the weight loss on getting older/hormonal changes which I doubt is why she’s so thin.

        • Anonymous

It’s certainly possible that my reading is colored by my own history and that of many of my friends. What I read was a person who has finally achieved the (not necessarily healthy) ideal she’s wanted for herself and is sort of euphoric about it and can’t keep her mouth shut, and maybe is a little terrified of when it inevitably goes downhill. I don’t think she’s “more at peace” at all, it’s just what you say not to sound crazy. The aging stuff I read as being more about the times when she feels she’s fighting with her body, as in the earlier paragraph?

But like I said, I have a lot of baggage around this, so it’s perfectly possible that your reading is correct.

          • MilaXX

I think Demi is okay as an actress, but I just feel like she’s been doing the older woman try hard thing for a bit and her weight loss is part of her trying to prove she’s still got it thing. I’ve watched her since she was Jackie Templeton on General Hospital, but this past few years have just made me cringe in her behalf.

          • Anna Maria Diamanti

I’d be more inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt if she’d admit that it took (hundreds of) thousands of dollars worth of head to toe plastic surgery to become “more at peace” with her body.

If you’re not honest about your issues, you just end up trivializing them.

          • Anonymous

I definitely agree with that. It was just the implication that it’s always as simple as “if you got it, flaunt it” that I took issue with.

          • Anonymous

Right?? She really is just full of crap, please, woman. You spent many many dollars to look the way you do. Don’t be such a liar. I can’t stand all the lying about her body.

  • Anonymous

    What. Evs.

But I did nearly snort my water through my nose at “When you break up, you call your friends; when celebrities break up, they call their agent.”  Brilliant!

  • http://twitter.com/thedailymax Maria Alcantara

    Body Language.  Two snaps.

  • Emily Giovanni

I wonder why Demi Moore is always so heavily photo-shopped. I see pictures of her a lot, but I don’t think I would recognize her if I saw the real person sitting across from me. The woman is like 50, right? Why isn’t she allowed to have a wrinkle in a magazine? I am sure she’s even more stunning when she doesn’t look plastic.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. It’s a fantasy everyone wants to believe for some reason.

    • Anonymous

Having watched her for decades, I think sometimes she has driven, or at least welcomed, a lot of the photo-shopping.  I do think she has more appearance/body issues than even the average actress.

    • BerlinerNYC

It is strange, and I doubt it’s driven by her. Did you see (I think it was on Jezebel last year or in 2010) when Ashton tweeted some cell-phone snap he took of her at a photoshoot, and it looked SO much prettier than the weird magazine cover the shoot ended up resulting in?

      • Emily Giovanni

I did not see that but I am not surprised. Also, I have mixed feelings about all the people who think celebs should shut up about their body image issues. On the one hand, I totally agree that they have access to SO MUCH that makes it easier for them to achieve awesome bods. However, they are also subject to SO MUCH more criticism and tweaking and less flaw forgiveness than the rest of us. I can totally believe that the insane photo-shopping of people like Demi Moore would give them some pretty serious neuroses in the self-image department.

  • Anonymous

She’s a beautiful woman who needs a sandwich. Or two.

  • Anonymous

Pfft. I find her as compelling as a bag of mouse droppings.  She’s just so…..desperate.  But you, TLo, are on point with your “call your agent ASAP” assessment.

  • MilaXX

She looks good in these pictures but that interview sounds a bit too Rachel Zoe to me. Either gain 5 lbs or shut up about your weight, and let not pretend your look wasn’t surgically assisted even if it’s not plastic looking.

    • Anonymous

      Amen.

  • Anonymous

What I want to know is, on the cover shot, where is her other arm?? did they just photoshop it right off?

    • Judy_J

Good question.  There’s no trace of it in that photo.

    • Anonymous

      BWAHAHAHAHA!

    • Anonymous

How DARE you!?  She looked as great as Anja Rubik in that Balmain dress!  Wait, what are we talking about here?

    • Anonymous

“Demi Moore loses her man – And her arm, but comes back strong in borrowed couture.”

    • Anonymous

Remember when W photoshopped off part of one hip but left a chunk accidentally? Right on the cover, big as life.

    • Anonymous

Whoops – should’ve read further down the page before I posted.  But that was the first thing I noticed.

  • Anonymous

the gucci looks better on her than it does on the model.

  • Anonymous

Dear Demi: Looking as you do, with all the assistance you get to look that way, no one wants to listen to you bitch about your looks. You are not engendering any sympathy. At least not from me.

    The Balmain looks amazing you.

  • Anonymous

Um, that is NOT a good cover shot. I mean, arm pose aside, that dull thousand-yard stare is freaking me out. It’s so “ugh. let’s do this.” It’s not enticing or welcoming — it’s not even a “c’mon world, I’m ready for you!” The other photos are also joyless and unengaged. She’s no victim, why so passive in these? Better to show anger, even, than listlessness.
And yeah, I’m pretty sure she has been in a 30-year cagematch with her own biology, though the specific battles may have changed from time to time.. How miserable.

    • Anonymous

she has a very hard face, something that works better when yr younger. she’s trying to soften it.

& she probably does feel pretty bad. it’s hard enough being cheated on when only the seven or twelve people you know know about it. when the whole international community is glued to chewing over every stupid inch of the story–&, since of the age discrepancy, all of yr personal flaws that many a foolish person may think led him to do it, it’s gotta be even worse. yes, she ambitiously drove her way into this position, i remember her well from the beginning, never liked her much, never liked her at all, actually. still, it’s an ugly position for anyone to be in.

  • Anonymous

She does look beautiful but the facial expression on the cover is killing me.  “Buy this magazine, and support this brave, wounded everywoman supermommy Kabbalist.”  Okay, Demetria.  I hope that her upcoming projects are as pro-woman and enduring as all of her timeless, fascinating films.

    • Anonymous

The Scarlet Letter crossed my mind the other day and had a fit all over again about it.

  • Anonymous

She’s doing her best Zsa Zsa here, but it really doesn’t work.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001637020912 Zula Khramov

I think that the best thing any woman can do after a breakup is a cover of national magazine looking “as fuckable as ever” – love that one! Worth to be a celebrity just for that…

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I generally make it a policy to pretend I am a celebrity at all times when out of my house.  I find it entertaining…

  • Anonymous

    meh

  • Anonymous

That Gucci creation makes her look like a Cher wannabe.

  • bloodshothalfblind

body body body!!  it will be such a hoot to see her try to keep this going past 60.  i’m sure she’s already planned out the naked cover shoot for her big 7-0.

  • CQAussie

Wow Demi is looking amazing here.  I LOVE that Balmain dress on her.

I also love the “First Look at Spring” headline right across her tits….hahaha….=D

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love her.  Glad she’s rid of him.

  • Anonymous

Compared to the Anne Taylor ads she is in, she looks downright natural here.  I think I may start a new business making natural looking  masks of celebrities in their thirties that they can just wear from now on to avoid having to get photoshopped or cut up.  Hell, they can just hire a 22 year old model to ear it so they don’t have to deal with 50 year old body issues.

  • Anonymous

they both look good, the gucci & the balmain. & the balmain looks perilously close to hideous on, if not cos of, the model so thats really saying something. dee-yadda yadda.

anorexia codified really was a big thing of the 80s, wasnt it. but her life currently seriously sucks, he surely couldve kept it quieter, dont you think, knowing that the whole world was gonna look at what he did, so, you know, i still say good for her for the editorial.

  • Anonymous

    “A place of greater acceptance”

Uh oh! What’s she’s talking about here is that she’s starting to see age-related change that no amount of diet, exercise or surgery can bring back to mid-30′s-and-holding.

She IS going to freak out as she ages, isn’t she? Unless her therapy is really successful. Too bad. Hard on her kids.

    • Anonymous

Yes, too bad. Not that I gave it much thought but I don’t think I imagined that her insecurity would run so seemingly deep.

  • oohsparkley!

She does look amazing.  And it doesn’t appear to be photo-shopped into freakiness.  Maybe just some smoothing out.

  • foodycat

I thought the thumbnail was of Salma Hayek, and actually I think all of these would look better on her than Demi.

  • Anonymous

I’m so sorry that the stress of her break-up made her arm fall off, as per the cover photo. Additionally, if she was an interesting person with a scintilla of charisma she might be able to carry off that Gucci moment, but she can’t. It’s just, like, “Demi! Fringe, darling! ARMS! ANGLES! … alright, dear, that will have to do.”

  • Anonymous

She looks miserable. If the plan was to look like she’s bounced back, it failed. She does look amazing in the full-on Gucci shot, but the sunglasses are covering her sad eyes.

  • Anonymous

The pictures are great, except for that gravity-defying Photoshopped side-cleavage on the cover. Boobs are not bocci balls. Or at least they shouldn’t be.  I love that her face is showing a hint of age now – it makes her way hotter to me.

  • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

Meh. I wonder what’s next for her. Seems like she’s only been known as someone married to Ashton Kutcher lately. She can’t play the hot cougar forever.

  • Anonymous

    Body body body. Whatever.

    Love the Balmain on her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Hutchlover Amye Sabin

I think she HAS been too thin, but I attribute that to the douchebag she was married to.

  • margaret meyers

LOVE the beach heels.  So sensible.

    • J MN

Yeah but they’re going to leave some seriously weird tan lines.

  • penn collins

I wanted to NOT like this dangit…I find her so….well… but DANG she looks great in these pics…really surprised me…

  • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

she does look gorgeous, but my favorite part about this shoot is that she wasnt photoshopped to no end like madonna. she actually looks old, in a good way of course.

  • Anonymous

Love the Balmain on her — beautiful.  With a figure and a face like that she needs to shut the hell up about her body.  So silly and annoying.

  • Anonymous

I have never liked her. She’s tops of my Irrational Hate List, sharing a throne with Tom Cruise

  • Anonymous

I am glad she looks so good here. I feel sorry for her because of the way the press has covered her divorce.  If I read one more article about how she is so emotionally needed, I think I will throw up.

She looks great and strong here.  Very beautiful whatever her age.

  • Anonymous

She looks a little haggard in the cover shot but the other ones are pretty.

Her left arm was photoshopped out, who needs it, it just adds on pounds.

  • vmcdanie

She’s a Hollywood actress above the age of 21. Of course she’s got a body obsession.

Which I kind of hate to feed but she looks freaking fabulous here. Like almost the best I’ve ever seen her. That Gucci swimsuit, my God (however, I want to burn those shoes.)

  • Anonymous

She looks ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! I want that Balmain dress!!
