Cover Girl: Drew Barrymore for InStyle

Posted on January 10, 2012

Man, we suddenly feel old.

Max Mara dress, Tiffany & Co. earrings, Alexis Bittar and Manon Von Gerkan rings, Dolce & Gabbana bracelet.

Drew Barrymore featured in the February 2012 issue of InStyle magazine photographed by Andreas Sjödin.

When did Drew suddenly get so … mature? Isn’t she still doing those Revlon Cover Girl commercials where, through the magic of special effects, she not only has giant Gollum eyes, but giant Gollum eyes with luxurious, foot-long lashes? They weren’t shot that long ago, were they? Then again, they are, as we said, an SFXtravaganza. Maybe Drew morphed into Dynasty-era Linda Evans a while ago and we just didn’t notice.

Or maybe this is not such a hot picture of Drew.

Is it us? She doesn’t look old so much as she looks … not like herself. None of her personality is evident and usually, that comes bursting through the screen. Plus the makeup looks a little harsh, no?

Great dress, though.

She is one of my favourites and I would not have identified her. Love the dress, adore her, but for me, I hate when her hair is in the stage of coloring. Truly, truly, truly do not like.

      • Anonymous

I don’t like her hair either but it’s “ombre” coloring which is a fad right now. People are paying for this look.

        • akprincess72

          Not this girl, yikes!!!

        • Anonymous

That explains that Kartrashian with the multi-colored locks.

    • Ali Barthwell

When I pulled the magazine out of my mailbox, I thought it was Sarah Jessica Parker. No lie. She looks massively different.

      • Anonymous

It’s SJP’s hair and typical pose, all right.

      • Evan Hart

Everything about it screamed SJP to me. It’s almost like they morphed Drew’s and SJP’s faces and bodies together. It’s creepy and weird.

      • Chantelle James

I think the shape of her face has been changed in this picture and something strange is going on around her eyes, too, making her look more like SJP than Drew Barrymore. It isn’t her most attractive look (even if it is better than her foundation commercial, where she appears to have applied the foundation with a trowel).

      • Anonymous

I thought it was Julia Roberts. Sort of.

      • Anonymous

I didn’t know who is was and had to look to see.  But if I’d had to guess I would have said Rose Byrne of Damages/Bridesmaids with dyed hair.  Eeeek.

    • http://twitter.com/iraki86 Ira Ioannidou

I think it’s a nice picture but it simply isn’t Drew!

    • Anonymous

Although it’s not the best face Drew has ever given, my biggest quibble is with the placement of her hands in the photo.  It’s the same pose as pregnant women use.

      • Anonymous

No, pregnant celebrities like to put one hand on top of belly and one under, emphasizing baby shape, lest we think they are getting fat.

    • Anonymous

they did something to the shape of her face. some sort of cubist picasso-effect.

      • Anonymous

It looks like she had a stroke.

    • Anonymous

It looks like they lost parts of Drew’s face in the picture so they patched it up with a shot of Sarah Jessica Parker. Very odd.

    • marilyn

She does have a Linda Evans look.  I think it is her facial expression, her hippie rings, the Dynasty type dress, and her unstyled-looking hair.  Are her roots growing out?  She is getting older, and still looks great.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5T2PZNOJHM5KFNFLC4PV7GXV3A Jenny

I received a free subscription to In Style a few months back and every month I’m totally disgusted by the amount of photoshopping that goes on in those cover photos. Amy Adams was absolutely unrecognizable in December. Cover up a zit, smooth out a wrinkle if you must, but the model should still look like herself, no?

    • J Dreesen

Shopped.  but it does make me feel old that someone her age is *getting* the shop treatment.  though i guess no age range is sacred to the Adobe gods…

    • Anonymous

Did she go to Cher’s plastic surgeon, or did they just use Cher’s usual photoshopper? Because she completely has Cher’s cheekbones and chin here.

    • Anonymous

The girls need better support.  Braless hippy chick = Drew.

    • Anonymous

So many InStyle covers are off in this way, where the celebrities look not quite like themselves.

The Katie Holmes smirk isn’t helping matters.

      • foodycat

The Katie Holmes smirk doesn’t work for anyone. Even Katie Holmes! I think the twisted posture also makes her waist look wide and lack of bra + unrelieved white just takes away all her shape. This is not a good cover.

    • Anonymous

      Cover Girl, not Revlon, darlings.

And I agree.  It’s not such a hot picture of her.

    • M N

Where’s Drew Barrymore?  All I see is some generic pop singer.  Seriously, the face is all wrong, and the body is 20 pounds too skinny for Drew.

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Urban Gypsy aka Tess

That has to be some pretty awful photoshop to make the fabulous Drew look so…creepy.  One corner of her mouth is higher, it’s almost a Joker like smile. Her hair, mm, is that the new ombre thing or is she growing it out? Either way it doesn’t help. T-Lo, as usual, gets it right, she’s missing her spark, her uniqueness here.

      • Anonymous

Actually, her natural smile is always off kilter like that, it’s usually very charming and “Drew” like.  Here, combined with a bad pose, awful hair, wierd lighting and other sins, it is off putting.

    • Anonymous

Photoshop alert: no hips – NO HIPS.  Even if she’s torquing her lower body, the width down there is so narrow it makes her shoulders seem impossibly wide — no, her hips impossibly narrow.  I haven’t seen Drew Barrymore in anything for years, so I have no idea whether she’s a lollipop or not, but this pic gives that impression.

And the bracelet — take a quick look at it: I see creepy grabby fingers in the long pieces.  And now I can’t not see them.

      • Anonymous

it looks like macaroni, like the kind you make your mom in pre-k

      • Anonymous

Ha ha ha – “creepy grabby fingers”! It’s true!

      • http://CallMeJane.com/ CallMeJane

I thought they looked like cashews! But I’m hungry so……. everything looks like food.  I just revisited the Ewan page and started to carve him up with a knife and fork.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

Whoever that is, she’s very pretty, but it’s not Drew Barrymore.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jill-Tracy/100001557759289 Jill Tracy

Why does it seem lately that all celebrities on magazine covers don’t look like themselves?? The Reese cover you featured the other day didn’t look like her either! Don’t like this at all! Drew should be cute and bubbly, not this weird photoshopped person.

    • Anonymous

Kill photoshop! Beat it until it dies!

    • Anonymous

      Drew should sue.

    • MilaXX

Nice dress but that mag cover is photoshopping at it’s worse. The head is too big for the body, the body looks like it’s from 2 different people and the face is a completely different shade than the rest of the body.

    • Anonymous

Completely unrecognizable as Drew Barrymore.  So tired of photoshopping.

    • Anonymous

I guess that’s why they put the header It’s Drew! right next to her face; so we would know who this is.

    • Anonymous

there is this optical allusion photograph, actually two, at our local science museum the Exploratorium.  They take some of the features of the face and turn them upside down.  When the pictures are upside down you don’t notice the difference, but when spun round to the correct chin down position, the altered one looks grotesque, this reminds me of that, and in fact its vanna whites face, which is even freakier

      http://exs.exploratorium.edu/exhibits/vanna-about-face/

    • Sara__B

If this pinched, dead-eyed smile was the best they got from the usually vibrant Drew, it was a really bad shoot.

    • Anonymous

Is it possible she’s had that much work done? Her face looks like it’s full of injections. The mouth looks completely unnatural.

    • Anonymous

      yikes

      InStyle?  Not!

    • Anonymous

Is it surgery or is it Photoshop?  Only her surgeon and her re-toucher know.

      • Anonymous

        I know!

And right after I saw this T Lo post, my friend posted this cosmetic commercial and photoshop spoof on Facebook:
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_vVUIYOmJM

        • Anonymous

That’s great! Thanks for posting it.

      • Anonymous

I can only hope it’s P-shop because the idea that the actual Drew was disfigured so badly is hard to take.

    • Anonymous

Seriously do not like what they did to her here.

    • Anonymous

She doesn’t look like herself and they chopped about two inches of space off each of her hips.

    • Anonymous

I thought ‘Celine Dion’.  Maybe she’s hung over.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Yes! Celine Dion. That’s not good…

      • Judy_J

I thought the very same thing!

      • Anonymous

        Exactly. Celinesque. Post-twins.

      • Anonymous

Haha! Right! Why the long face, Drew?

    • Lisa

She has been my girl-crush for years, but no, this is not a good picture of her.  But I don’t really blame her for that – the makeup is weird, and with InStyle’s questionable history with the way they photoshop their covers, I’m not surprised.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks good, other than the hair color issue.  Love that dress — big Max Mara fan.  Hey, she can’t continue as ET’s best friend forever.  Even child stars grow up….or just age.

    • Anonymous

i thought the fashion for painting people persimmon [on their persons or in their pictures] had passed. i guess not. in fact this time their pointless purulent & possibly pickled photoshopper even chose to paint the hair. it’s as if they dipped the lady into marmalade. unacceptable work which is almost unkind to its subject. nevermind the thinning, it’ll take a brighter & better day before thats not standard. it’s the rest of it that punches before it bites. the end.

    • Anonymous

I think her hair is making her look more matronly.

    • Anonymous

That’s not Drew. That’s a badly over’Shopped representation of her.

    • Anonymous

She looks awful. Her jawline is freaking me out.  I still love her, but wow.  This looks like she’s been living a little rough, and that’s saying quite a lot for Ms. Barrymore.

    • Judy_J

She looks more like Celine Dion than Drew Barrymore. And not in a good way.

    • emily mcginnis

it hardly looks like her. their covers have been terrible lately. Jennifer Garner had way too much make-up on last month’s cover (it didn’t look like her either).

      • Anonymous

I lost respect for their covers years ago, long before I cared about the art of fashion.  They dressed the cover girl in a shell bean.  At least, that’s what it looked like.

    • Anonymous

      I love her nails.

      • Anonymous

        Best thing about the picture.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=19801927 Dennis Coyle

this almost feels like a “i want to start having kids and you need to recognize i can do that”  moment

    • Anonymous

She’s been air-brushed to within a millimeter of recognition. Who IS that woman?

    • Anonymous

      Rose Bryne.

    • Anonymous

I think the makeup is just a tad heavy. She’s still the 5 year old girl from E.T. as far as I’m concerned.

      • Anonymous

I just re-watched that a week ago. God, she was so adorable. She had “it” even then.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

I think it is the ombre hair… it just isn’t a good look.

    • Anonymous

I didn’t think she looked so mature as much as I thought she looked so Julia Roberts.

    • Anonymous

      That IS Linda Evans’ smile!

    • Anonymous

Her cheeks and around her nose look oddly frozen.  Perhaps over-airbrushing has ruined her naturally pretty face in this pic.

And some distinct Golluming has made her hips apparently disappear.

    • Stephen Bornstein

If Sarah Jessica Parker married Kate Beckinsale….Drew here would be their lovechild.

      • Anonymous

I see Sarah Jessica Parker too.  And not in a good way.

    • Allison Woods

I kind of like that macaroni bracelet a little bit.

    • Anonymous

I shudder. How can this possibly be Drew? Very peculiar face. And the hair is gross too. Regular women would be super embarrassed to go out with that stringy mane.

    • http://twitter.com/siao siao

I like how the cover exclaims, “It’s Drew!”, as if they know that everyone’s first reaction to seeing the cover is “….Who is that?”

    • Anonymous

Oh man, that photoshopper was having a bad trip.

It’s like her reflection in a funny house mirror.

    • Anonymous

Definitely not her best picture. Her eyes look heavy and tired, and the faux-smile looks insincere or Cher-like (no offense to her majesty Cher!). It’s just not working.

    • Anonymous

I would so have LOVED that dress back in the day when I had the figure for it.  Just beautiful.  The cover photo sucks.

    • Cathy S

Either it’s a terrible picture or her face has been photoshopped beyond recognition.

    • Anonymous

Definite photoshop hack job here.  Look how the “shadow” from her hair neatly creates a firm jaw line on either side (no lighting to explain this).  Drew has always had a soft girly face and here she is doing the chin down look that photogs love but don’t seem to understand does nothing for those with a soft jaw line and/or any extra chin.  Drew is plenty thin and I’m implying she has a double chin or something, but she still seems to have a bit of a baby face and I think what they have done here is deepen shadows around her cheeks to “define” the Dynasty cheek-bones and pretty much cut off the edges of her face to “define” a jaw line, resulting in that odd, un-Drew like point-face thing.

    • Anonymous

That’s a total Photoshop disaster. The head doesn’t approximate a relationship with the neck.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      GROAN.

    • Anonymous

Yep, take a look at the fifth photo down in this TLO link: http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/04/yea-or-nay-drew-barrymore-goes-red-2.html

This is a candid shot with very similar chin down smile pose and compare to above.  You can see exactly where they used a shadow and related photoshopping above to “narrow” her relatively wide face — she looks much better in the candid shot, hippy girl vibe that I think is adorable but others not so much notwithstanding :).  I’ve always noticed she does a lot of high chin and chin back posing in editorial type shoots, which is why today’s photoshopped chin down shot stood out to me.

    • Anonymous

It reminds me of Demi when started messing with her face. Demi has been able to pull it off better than most in Hollywood because she had such a round full youthful face when she was young (not unlike Drew) — so when she started tightening it she looked good, but like another woman altogether instead of herself.

    • Anonymous

no good, drew. who approved this/photoshopped the shiznit outta her beautiful self? also: where is her other hip?

    • Anonymous

That is not a good picture at all.  It’s like they shot her in the middle of saying something.  Seriously, was this the best they got?  Then why didn’t they reshoot?

    • Anonymous

The picture is so bad it makes her look like SJP.  Down to the smirk.

      • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly! She even has SJP’s roots.

    • Anonymous

It’s a very badly styled photo of a one of the best “quirky/pretty” woman out there.  That hair is a disaster and the combo of white and the hand on hips pose that conjours up Ms. Evans ala Dynasty era.  Some stylist should lose his/her job over this.  IMO, Drews cheek bones and face look best with softer hair or pulled back from her face.  This sort of “dirty mop” casual is not her friend.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Oh my word, that is SUCH a Linda Evans face–great call.

    • aimee_parrott

Yeah, I think they knew this picture didn’t really look like her, which is why it says “It’s Drew!” right beside her face.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=786229820 Rhonda Hanson

this image is so heavily photoshopped it looks nothing like her — what happened to her hip? Drew is known for being a voluptuous woman; why does she need to be model thin because she is on the cover. boo InStyle – you made Drew look old rather than touching her up and making her look beautiful.

    • Anonymous

I thought it was an odd pic of Julia Roberts.  What did they do to Drew or has she had facework? Oh no.

    • Anonymous

Only recognizable Drew feature are her hands, which look right to me. Something odd about the eyes, the coloring is not her usual palette, somehow & while she does do that one-sided smile thing it is appearing on an oddly *wrong* face.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I LOVE that dress.  Gorgeous.  As for Drew, that doesn’t look a thing like her!  When are they going to stop photoshopping the hell out of people for their covers?  Dislike!

    • http://twitter.com/nothinbutgenius Veronika K.

I can’t get over the fact that she is going to star in a whale movie.

    • Anonymous

She can’t be getting work done on her face already, can she? Love the dress.

    • Anonymous

nice dress, but why would you choose it for a cover shot?  it’s plain white with a straight line across the shoulders and absolutely no detail, and against a plain white background.  somebody’s just phoning it in.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AFO7SZVQHHO7R3E4DAISSII7YA Jennifer

She has a weird Celine Dion vibe on that cover. Do NOT like.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I agree, this is NOT a great picture of her. She looks really unhappy, the make-up looks bad, and she looks just bland and empty.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=668425491 Daniela ‘Dani’ Weiss-Bronstein

Looks like they removed her jaw and part of her nose. It ages her face in credibly, and renders her both unrecognizable and less pretty.

    • Anonymous

She’s trying to say “Get me out of here” without moving her lips.
