Cameron Diaz: Lady in Black

Posted on January 24, 2012

You know how, with some celebrities, you wind up developing this lingering fondness for them, even though you can’t really pin down why or recall anything they’ve done recently that you enjoyed?

Yes, that sentence is practically writhing in pain at the awkward construction. Give us a break. We’re halfway through our first cup.

Anyway, Cammie’s like that for us. If we had to pin it down, it’s probably left over good will from the Charlie’s Angels movies.  We felt a little bad for featuring her the other day in a look that she clearly didn’t want photographed. So when these pictures of her attending the Paris Couture shows popped up, we jumped at the chance to do her a solid. Did she actually take our advice and get that bad bleach job fixed? Because her hair looks considerably softened in these pictures.

Cameron Diaz attends the Atelier Versace Spring 2012 Presentation.

It’s still not a great hair style for her, but straightening and sweeping it off her face improved things considerably. Not much to say about an all-black outfit, but from what we can see, she looks very put together. The coat’s really nice.

Cameron Diaz out and about in Paris.

There’s our girl. What a chic little look. A little on the matchy side, but we said the other day that she should be wearing toned-down colors until the hair grows out, so maybe that was the thinking here. Either way, we love this outfit.

Cameron Diaz attends the Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring 2012 show.

She’s definitely in a color-free mood at the moment. It’s to her stylist’s credit that they can dress her mostly in black over and over and still make each outfit distinct and interesting. Adorable dress, but we think the gladiator shoes are a bit much with it. Not to mention they seem to be a size too small for her.

She’s on my hate list for the same irrational reasons as you like her, but I really like that little jacket and grey booties look. The first one, at the Versace show, looks like she is running for office.

    • Anonymous

Agree on the second look.  Love the jacket!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

Agree, foody.  I find her un=photogenic, flat faced, and very little talent.  Not sure why, there’s just something about her that puts me off (not as much as SJP, though.)  But she does look great here, I must admit.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Antoinette-Niebieszczanski/100000014705925 Antoinette Niebieszczanski

I would’ve said “hagged-out”, but flat-faced sounds much more polite.  I could never figure out what all the fuss over her was about.

    • Cathy S

Yes. Fantastic jacket and booties. I like the polka dot dress on her too, but those sandals are pretty bad. The first look is pretty blah.

    • Wrenaria

      Agreed on all points.

    • Anonymous

Foody and Amye — Completely agree… She’s one of those “model-turned-actresses” that had way too many breaks considering her level of talent. Plus, her career choices have been dreadful. “Bad Teacher” — gimme a break.

      • Anonymous

I remember back in the day, though…The Mask, Something About Mary (which I never saw, but in which she was reputedly very funny), etc. She had a pretty respectable run as a comedic hottie; it’s just that it was in the 90s/early 2000s. She’s not allowing herself to age gracefully in terms of her choices, or, for that matter, in terms of her appearance.

  • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

She looks FAB in the second photo! The third is cute and the first, meh. My problem the other day wasn’t so much the color (although it did look fried) but the cut. The bob is not Cammie’s friend.

  • Anonymous

Is her hair that much lighter than normal?
I love polka dots, especially white dots on black, so she’s way ahead!  But that dress looks like it should be worn in spring or summer, not January!!
    sheesh…

    • Anonymous

i agree – that dress with those sandals is a summer look, not something for the dead of winter in Paris. Miami, yes, Paris no

  • Anonymous

The grey/black ensemble is tres chic.  Polka dots are always fun but a big thumbs down on the strappy shoes…….so awful and distracting.  Can’t tell much about her hair but she does seem happier.  Then again, she’s in Paris, going to fashion shows as a guest.  Who wouldn’t be happy?

  • Anonymous

Her face looks bloated, beat-up, and overly-colored. She has unusual features that have always been striking, but she’s starting to look rode hard and put away wet.

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Wow! Hilary Clinton has never looked so good!

    • Anonymous

EXACTLY my thought in the firs pic!

  • Call me Bee

She looks very nice in all of these photos.
But–she is also on my “Celebrities I Irrationally Dislike” (hate is such a strong word so I don’t use it much…) becasue I heard her speak on the radio here in town a few years back about some animal rights thingy.  It wasn’t the subject matter, but the fact that she could barely put two sentences together for a complete thought.  Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, Cammy is…

  • Sobaika Mirza

I’ve never been a fan (she’s actually somewhere far down my Irrational Celebrity Hate List) but I feel bad for her and that fried hair. Hoping she grows it out with aplomb.

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

She’s on my ICH list also.

It looks like she put a rinse on her hair to bring some color to that horrible platinum mess.

  • Anonymous

I have the same issue with Cam!  For me it’s left over good will from “Something about Mary” and that movie she did with Christina Applegate.  But ever since she dated Justin Timberlake, I just can’t with her.  Gosh, I’m so glad I’m not celebrity so no name nobody’s from nowhere don’t sit around irrationally judging me!

  • Anonymous

I love the outfits, but wow, does she look out of place in them.

  • Anonymous

I like the 2nd and last look fine enough but the first pic looks like she is auditioning to play Hillary Clinton in a Lifetime Biopic Movie of the Week.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, the shoes not so much.  Poor choice.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

All the looks are really put together. Very chic. But…she desperately needs a new make-up person (and hair). This shiny, orangy thing is not working for her anymore. She is aging and, like most smokers, not well. I’m all for her not getting any work done but it’s time for a new make-up routine that addresses her current skin and age.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Has she decided she wants to be taken seriously from now on? Anyway, she’s going to be 40 this year. Looks like it is hitting her hard.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

She has gone from dressing 25 to dressing 45 in about a week. New stylist?

  • Anonymous

Never like gladiator shoes, but that dress is great.  The second look-beautiful.  I’m fine with the matchy here, b/c I can’t really see another color to wear that wouldn’t look ridiculous.  I’d rather see those grey booties than black ones.

  • Anonymous

First two looks are polished and chic, but I wish she would powder her face. I think she’s trying for luminous, but it’s just coming across as shiny. The third look is a bit ridicule – a polka-dot print and open-toe sandals in January in Paris. Ummn, non.

  • MilaXX

Clothes wise she looks fine except for the gladiator sandals which is giving her a serious case of monkey toes. Here’s the other thing I discovered about all these celebs like Elle Fanning or Cammie here when they are looking all shiny. Once again it’s the makeup. I had some pictures done recently and had my makeup done by a professional MU artist. They use a finishing powder designed to give a “radiant glow”. Looked great in person, but shiny as a new penny in the pictures. My guess is once again, the light particles don’t play well with flash. I’m thinking these shiny celebs aren’t so shiny in person.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

There’s actually one specific ingredient that is responsible — it gives a nice glow to the skin until you use a flash bulb.  Then it flares like a damn firework, making you look like you haven’t washed your face in a decade.

The confusing part to me is that make-up artists are ever using it on celebrities.  You know they’re going to get photographed, right?  And by people who aren’t necessarily trying for the most flattering shot?

      • MilaXX

Yeah I had taken a class a while back that talked about it, but completely forgot until I saw it in my own pictures.

      • Anonymous

Yes, why would the make-up artists be using a product that doesn’t photograph well? It makes no sense.

    • Anonymous

“A serious case of monkey toes” had me laughing out loud. Thanks. Now, how freakin’ cute would shoes like these have been with the dress? http://couture.zappos.com/n/p/dp/70714727/c/276136.html

I also agree on the makeup/flash-bulb issue. I avoid any moisturizers or other face products that promise “a glow.” It means it highlights all my crevices when my photo is taken!

  • Anonymous

HA HA! I love this mysterious like/dislike think. I really enjoyed CD here, then I hit a saturation point maybe and now she’s on my S-list. Like Anne Hathaway…suddenly just could not stand the sight of her. Anyway – same hair lots of product. The gray and the polka-dots JUSt miss on accessories, shoes to be exact.

  • Anonymous

You know how, with some celebrities, you wind up developing this lingering fondness for them. . . Cammie’s like that for us.

That’s funny because you know that “why is this person a celebrity?” list we have in our heads? She’s at the top of mine. I’ve got nothing against her; I just look at her and think, “huh?”

  • BuffaloBarbara

Eh, none of these is anything to write home about, and the hair?  No.  Better than in the other picture, but still flat and lifeless and dull.  What’s with celebrities and dead hair?  If you’re going to spend thousands on a dye job, shouldn’t someone somewhere have put in a little effort?

  • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

That second look is great! The hair looks so much better styled that way. And is it weird that my love for her starts with The Mask….?

I think everyone’s did.  She was so beautiful and fresh.

  • Anonymous

Much improved from her last visit here.

I love the polka dot dress, but the shoes are hideous, oh and it’s January! Save that look for April through September.

    • Anonymous

      Complete agreement.

Also, love the second look, and even though the photo is unfortunate, the first look is pretty darn good too.

I am relieved.  Those photos of the blue dress we will never mention again scared me.

No Botox, Cameron (or whatever it is you’re doing lately)! You have such a pretty, unique face, and you are ruining it!

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

Yeah, her face looks…wrong. Shiny and very tight. Yikes.

All I can see is that she’s orange.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Shiny and orange.  Sorry, i think she looks pretty bad in all of these pictures.

  • Anonymous

I have an irrational fondness for Cam as well.  But I don’t think it’s good that I spent more time staring at the black dress on the mannequin at the top of the stairs than Cameron in that third picture.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

My love started for her in My Best Friend’s Wedding.  Love the first two looks, the shoes ruin the third look.  It’s probably cliche, but I would have loved a red ( or blue!) shoe with the polka dot dress.

    • Anonymous

      Yellow!

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Gotta be careful with black, white and yellow. Done wrong, you can end up looking like a bumble bee.

    • Call me Bee

The *only* movie I liked her in was Holiday with our Miss Kate W.  And maybe In Her Shoes.  Otherwise..meh…
ITA about colorful shoes with B&W polka dots. Cliche, but adorable.

  • Anonymous

She’s on my Irrational Hate List, always has been.
She looks good in that second pic, but I think it’s just the angle or something, because her face has been looking rough lately. She just has that rode hard and put away wet look, which makes me wonder if there aren’t any drug/alcohol issues she needs to address.
I would like to see her try red hair. I think it would be a good look for her.

    • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

Could we stick to the clothes, please? It’s bad enough the kittens are opining on her face, but adding alcoholism to the speculation is a bit much.

      • Anonymous

Sorry, TLo. Irrational hate gone too far.

        • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

          No prob.

  • Anonymous

Her transformation into Cindy McCain has been subtle…until this point.

  • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I too have lingering goodwill from the Charlie’s Angels movies. She was so charming and adorable and just instantly lovable, and there was a while when she was that way in all her movies. Lately that hasn’t been true, and she might be a little too old now to pull off that bubbly persona, but I still have a certain fondness for her. (Plus I always feel a certain camaraderie for the tall, athletic girls.)

But yeah, the second and third looks here are great!Want that chic grey jacket, and would totally not object to having the polka dot dress appear in my closet. The first look is fine, but I don’t love the hairstyle, which looks a little mullety.

  • Anonymous

Much much better here, especially the second and third photos. In the first one, she looks like an older Upper East Side socialite. In second picture, everything is working. In the third, I get why she wore the gladiators (probably to edge up the sweetness of the dress), but there might have been a better option.

  • Anonymous

I kind of like her too, Bad Teacher was fun movie, especially her WTF expression through the entire thing and complaints that all the Chicago Bulls (obviously wary of women like her) wore condoms … “and then THEY TAKE THE condoms!” She didn’t know any of her students’ names and there were no decorations — or anything  – in her classroom.

  • CQAussie

The gladiator shoes RUINED that last look.  If I ignore it – I still love the dress =D  She does look softer in these photos so well done on the damage control Team Cameron!

  • Jenna Kuhmann

What is up with her face?  Plastic-shiny and too tan in every single one.  Even California girls loose a little color in the winter, Cameron.  She looks like Barbie’s mom.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

She seems to have gone full on “ladies who lunch”?  As an aside, I was at the same party with her YEARS ago when she was still a model – before any of her movie roles.  I noticed her because she was so stunningly beautiful (not all models are), and she had a smile that lit up the sun.  That smile is how I remembered meeting her later when she started showing up in movies.  She would have been in her early 20′s then, as I was probably around 30.  She still looks great, but, let’s face it, we’re not kids anymore…

  • Anonymous

I really like her in the second and third looks.  Her hair looks nice loosely pulled back.  I don’t love the gladiator sandals–but I tend to dislike them on principle–but i love the dress.  Are they polka dot squares (polka squares)?

  • Anonymous

that hair in the first picture just failed. The color is still so harsh.

  • Anonymous

Second look is really great.  She looks happy and comfortable.  Every girl has to go through the grow out phase with their hair.  It can seem like an excruciatingly long period of time.

  • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

Wigs.  She needs wigs.  And to take lots of vitamins to make her hair grown.

  • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

It’s hard for me to be objective because I irrationally dislike her.  Still the last dress is very cute but the shoes with it are all wrong.  I hesitate to say this, but part of me feels like even the dress might be a little too young for her?

  • Terence Ng

I have lingering good will over The Sweetest Thing and Bad Teacher.

  • Anonymous

    she’s still looking rough.

  • R. L.

Yes!  I’m so glad to see her looking better.  Not perfect mind you but better with the hair not looking like she stuck her finger in a light socket.

  • Anonymous

I’ll leave the hair and makeup opining to others, and just say,

I love the second look here, with the darling grey graphic jacket, and the cute suede boots. I wanna both. And the chain link purse is just the right Parisien touch. She looks comfy and chic in her own skin.

  • Anonymous

She just needs some pressed powder. And I think her hair color could stand to be about 20% warmer. But really, this is a tremendous improvement. Either her work has settled in or those last pics were hella unflattering.

    • Lisa

She just needs to (in general) tone down both the self-tanner and the hair color just a skootch.  I’ve always thought she looked wonderful with blonder hair, just not as blond as the other day – this looks better.  And she looks great with some warmth to her face, just not the orangey look she has here.

  • Anonymous

She needs to take care of that SHINE.

  • Anonymous

I think she should get a German dominatrix look going. Gel that awful hair back, stride around in tight black suits with sky high heels and just ride it all out.

    • Susan Crawford

Yes – she could definitely rock a “Madchen in Uniform” look.

  • Anonymous

Now, if she’d just lay off the tanner…

  • Anonymous

I am perhaps stultifyingly old fashioned, but that first look is what a rich urban blond of a certain age should be wearing to a daytime appointment. Ms. Diaz is perhaps just barely old enough to qualify, but then it averages out the occasions when she shows up dressed in something that should be on a 23 year old.

Jacket in the middle photo is GREAT. I am prejudiced against the grey suede ankle boots because I had a similar (just knock off a couple of zeros, I’m sure) pair in the 80′s that I wore into the ground, but never entirely loved their color.

Last look cute but the sandals are stupid and, perhaps, on the verge of taking the ensemble to a place too girlish.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    love the black and gray

  • Anonymous

Cammie, dear, please lay off the self-tanner!

Every time I see her I think of Benjamin Orr of the Cars.  I can’t not see it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

I removed this b/c TLo don’t want use to comment on her face… which I totally understand. Suffice it to say, she is dressing much older lately, so I wonder if she is feeling her age all of a sudden.

  • Lisa

That first look makes her look way older than her years. And then she does a complete 180, because the polka dot Minnie Mouse dress makes her look like she’s’ trying way too hard to be  younger than she is.  Plus, I HATE it combined with the gladiator sandals.

For my money, Goldilocks found her “just right” outfit in the middle.  The gray and black outfit is chic, lovely, and doesn’t look too young nor too old.

  • Anonymous

I too have a soft spot for Cammie.  I hate to see her look so bad in these pictures.  She looks her best in tshirt and jeans.  And the platinum hair is horribly aging.

  • Anonymous

Oh, she is just so worn looking!! Like a woman who has drank and smoked and now looks 50, when she is only 35. She has done something bad for her health and looks in her life.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I think her taste in shoes is questionable, but this is the most put together I’ve seen her look in a long time.
