Atelier Versace Spring 2012 Collection

Posted on January 23, 2012

For the first time in almost eight years Atelier Versace presented their collection to the public, rather than just private clients. When we saw the pictures, we think we understand why. We’ll state it upfront: we were very disappointed with this collection. The majority of the looks are quite awkward. Worse, it feels like the house is rehashing things Chanel and Givenchy have been doing in previous seasons, such as the odd cutouts, heavily textural feel, and architectural details. We couldn’t figure out why the house would go in this direction since pieces from the Atelier line are more likely to be seen on the red carpet or at major events than the Versace line. Anne Hathaway practically made Atelier Versace a household name last spring when she wore one of the dresses to host the Oscars. Most of these looks, we’d wager, are never going to show up on the red carpet. A bit too “out there” and clumsy looking. But then we remembered that Lady Gaga likes Versace and wears it quite often and suddenly it all makes sense, from the public presentation to the somewhat odd elements. This is a clear and very public appeal to Gaga herself: Here are the clothes we know you’re going to wear. And really, she’s probably one of the few people in the public eye who actually could make some of these pieces work. The rest of them might be seen on more conventional celebs, but with very drastic changes made.

Pure Star Trek, or maybe Babylon 5.  The one-shouldered green confection makes the model look like a linebacker.   And these also look like last year’s Lady Gaga, not anything fresh or weirdly new that might appeal to her.  One or two elements are nice, but mostly I think the collection gets a big “NEXT!”

    • Anonymous

Haha, I am just rewatching Babylon 5 (again) and thought (again): man I hope we won’t be dressing like that in our future.
What happened there Versace? Was the gorgeousness of the first Atelier Versace merely accidental? Or too sophisticated for the typical Versace customer?
But this isn’t even tacky gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

Wow – those gray gowns seem so derivative of the white Givency skeleton collection. A bit second rate.

  • Anonymous

You are so right T Lo. This collection isn’t particularly appealing.

I do like the yellow minidress with the cutouts at the shoulder. I could see a lot of starlets in that one. And that strapless brocade/beaded minidress is pretty nice (doesn’t fit the model well at all, though). But that’s about it. I’m guessing Kim Kardashian has already put in her order for the 9th one down (gold strapless mini with moto jacket).

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

She’d better hurry, while she still has the cred to be able to.

    • Anonymous

Heh. The model on #9 even looks like KK.

    • leilah

Funny, I immediately thought of KimK (gotta be specific, there’s a bunch of them) when I saw #10 — thinking that they’re gonna have to allow for disproportionate bust sizes.  The dress in #9 was int he same vein, but she rarely wears jackets or anything that obscures the bustline….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=786600203 Dan Howell

#3 looks like the dress version of Gozer the Gozerian’s outfit from Ghostbusters…

  • Anonymous

I definitely found a few of the looks (specifically the proportions) to be awkward rather than interesting but for the most part I thought that this was whole “presentation” was pretty visually appealing. I love the whole “missing a leg” thing in the final look, and most of the textiles and colors are stunning. I guess one strange thing is that the colors are all very “on trend” which seems unusual for a design house of such caliber and standing.

  • Anonymous

those weird spats on the shoes are a real trompe l’oeil for me. i keep thinking the models have their feet on backwards.

    • Anonymous

It also doesn’t help that their feet are reflected behind them.

  • lilibetp

Looks like Versace.  Not pretty or flattering.  Hard-edged.  Tough.  Weird.  Off-kilter proportions.  The models all look like bitches.  Expect them to start a rumble any moment.

  • Anonymous

Oh, jeez, some of that is truly terrible.

    • Anonymous

some?  They’ve produced some of my favorite collections in recent years, and this is just mortifyingly bad.

      • Anonymous

        You’re right – I was being a wimp.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=555593309 Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

    So Givenchy.  Disappointing. Sadness.

  • Anonymous

disappointing.  I normally drool over Atelier Versace.

  • Anonymous

“Awkward” is exactly the right word for this collection.   Also tired and done–especially the granny panties under sheer skirts and the festively festooned bra cups.

Also, now that I’ve been looking at it for a while, depressing.

    • Anonymous

Just say “festively festooned” five times. Perked me right up. ;)

  • Anonymous

Wow. It took me a few seconds to stop looking for the missing leg in the last picture.

  • Anonymous

I know that the point is not to make clothes to simply flatter a woman’s body, but if you’re going to be derivative, at least try to make the models look good.

  • bp316

    Must be a decoy collection.

    • Anonymous

      Best comment ever.

  • Anonymous

Wow, they really went out of their way to make the models look as unattractive as possible.

Which is amazing, considering the models are probably starving 16 year-olds.

  • Gina Joshua

The dark eye make up is not doing the clothes any favors…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=675517274 Nora Halcyonov Lynnenko Naught

wow…bring in the space suits.  they’re interesting, but they definitely make me think of Gaga and Star Trek…just like what Barbie said.  holy cow.

  • Anonymous

This is really disappointing. Last year’s designs were incredible and these look amateurish and gaudy.

  • Anonymous

Having a collection hinge on the possibility that Gaga might wear it seems like a really stupid business decision. I actually see more echoes of Kardashian in this (and I shudder at the thought) than Gaga. This is neither interesting enough nor out there enough for Lady G.

    • Katy Beazley

I also was wondering why they styled all the models to look like Kim K.  Just can’t look past that, very disturbing!

    • Oze R.

Yep, Kardashian all over. The tight ponytails and overall darknes… *shudder*

  • Anonymous

Nicki Minaj might bite, if only for the bright colors. But it might be too “done” for her and Gaga both.

    • Anonymous

Nicki Minaj was my first thought when I saw the brightly-colored dresses. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her in some of this, if for no other reason than to tone down the tackiness in her tacky-fab red carpet wear.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1063532157 Jeanne Moran de Grasse

Star Wars rehash.  Those cups look like eyes that will suddenly open or mouths that will start moving and making noises.  Creepy and not attractive.  An ode to The Space Age (dun dun daaaaah)!  Alien princesses with oddly place body parts!  Mouth and Eye motifs everywhere!  Jetson-y atomic swoopy bits!  Gravity and dry-cleaner defying extension!  Bleh.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Well, I thought, “Hooray for non-black lace!” Also, I thought the granny panty trend was on the decline. Maybe just my wishful thinking.

  • Anonymous

    The footwear is universally awful.
The first dress looks like she is accidentally wearing the straps you use to hang dresses up.  Also, the bunched up granny panties are ridiculous.
Last model with “the missing leg look” looks like the’s about to topple over.

  • Anonymous

I imagine a lot of money was poured into this garish output.  Have fun writing this one off, CPAs-for-Versace; I’m predicting “total loss.”

  • Anonymous

I don’t care for this much, could see Kim Kardashian wearing many of the short dresses.  They even styled one of their models to look like her.  Atelier Versace has often tended toward the “big money escort” look.  Many of these say “Fi’ dolla’ hooker” to me.  I do like the spring green full length gown with lace bodice and hip accent…it’s a stylish concept piece.

  • Anonymous

Wow.  This collection is stunningly bad.  It’s not just that it’s clearly “inspired” by Givenchy (which is bad in and of itself), but the fabrics just look cheap and gawdy.

And is Kim Kardashian model #9?

  • Anonymous

And is that camel toe I’m spying on the ice blue shorts?  Really Donatella?

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The two words that came to mind as I scrolled down the images were, Vulgar, and Atrocious.  Then I added, Ill-considered, Over-wrought, and as a final damning thought, it all reminded me of what Ms Clinique from last season’s PR would have done with unlimited funds.

    • Anonymous

      YES.

  • Natalie Harris

I actually REALLY like a handful of pieces, but I see what you’re saying with the rehashing.

  • Anonymous

Is it me or are the models styled to look like the Kardashian sisters? Perhaps that’s their target market this time around? The first photo looks like a photo op for “Deal or No Deal”.

    • Anonymous

You are not alone. I totally saw that “aesthetic” on some of the models. Fittingly enough, this is probably one of Versace Atelier’s worse collection in recent memory.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

You know there’s something wrong when the dresses look too small and too tight on size 00 models.

  • mrspeel2

    What’s with the Gladiator spats??

  • Anonymous

Even the models look awful in these outfits…

  • Anonymous

Was this the Judy Jetson collection or the Gaga collection ?

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

      The answer would be, um,…yes.

  • Anonymous

At least one of these things is a Kardashian costume (7th up from the bottom), so they’ve got that going for them, which is…nice.

  • mellbell

Slap a lining on nearly any gown and it will walk the red carpet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Stephens-Bassett/1503492602 Karen Stephens Bassett

    All together now…TACKY!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GFMOZFM3WT3T56EZHVZFK7UXSI Ramon

Maybe it is because of the styling, but so much of this screams Kim Kardashian to me. And I would rather be serenaded by a banshee than hear that kind of scream.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CIPKMOXHLA5KG34HMH55OXHCVM Angel H.

I love how everybody’s been guessing which futuric reality these looks came from!

I say The Fifth Element as modeled by Kim Kardashian.

  • Kate Connors

J Lo will wear that first green gown, the one with the lace over the torso, the first chance she gets.

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind the second dress or the first yellow one.  Otherwise, I can’t imagine anyone other than Lady Gaga wearing them.

    • Anonymous

I can’t even imagine her wearing them.

  • Anonymous

This is pretty awful.  I didn’t see one thing I liked, even in an abstract way.  I can, however, see Gaga or Nicki Minaj in any of these, and in a few maybe Katy Petty or Rihanna.  Someone who dresses more to shock people than for fashion.

  • Lori

Several of these look a lot more Kardashian than Gaga to me. That is not a compliment.

  • Annie Leung

I wholly expect some reincarnation of these gowns on a Doctor Who gala episode of some sort.

  • Anonymous

    Ew.

  • Anonymous

I can’t tell if I actually liked the second-to-last one, or if my grade curve had just plummeted by that point.

  • Anonymous

I could definitely see Gaga in some of these, but I can see Blake lively wearing a few of these along with JLo. Some of these even look like something Carrie Underwood would wear with her bubblegum hair. Maybe even Jenifer Lawrence might wear a couple of the structural pieces.

  • Anonymous

I like the neon colors rendered in soft fabrics, but this collection isn’t doing it otherwise.

  • Anonymous

    Boob pockets are everywhere.  Why?

  • Anonymous

Wow, I agree.  It looks aggressive–not powerful.  Maybe that’s why I thought shin guards (albeit in the wrong place) when I saw those things on their shoes.  Maybe at the end of the show they all stand in a circle and kick each other in the ankles (you know like kindergarten soccer).

  • Anonymous

They look  like costumes for some low budget sci fi movie.

  • Anonymous

The last one makes the model look like she’s missing a leg.

  • MilaXX

Egad! Looks like Cosplay clothes. The dress I sort of see on the red carpet is the yellow lace, 2 words I never imagined putting together in a sentence, much less saying I liked.

    • Anonymous

Cosplay clothes!!  I am dead because that’s the perfect description.  The legging/heel situations made me think “I think I’ve seen this on one of the Final Fantasy tumblrs* I follow…?”

      * I REGRET NOTHING

  • Anonymous

It’s cracktastic, but I’m kinda loving the fembot feel of certain outfits, like the short ones with the high “boots” (pumps+lace shin guards??). Like I said, cracktastic.

  • Anonymous

Yes, some of these are very Kardashian, and others more for Gaga wannabes, kind of the 2012 equivalent of Romy and Michelle’s Madonna outfits.

(And I started to say Kardashian wannabes, but, oh, my God, I HOPE that is an oxymoron!)

  • Anonymous

Fugly, fugly, fugly.  Although I could see Kristen Stewart in that first yellow number.

  • Onika K Morris-Alleyne

This is definitely NOT the Atelier I have come to know and look forward to salivating over. Where is the elegance with a hint of daring? This is like a mix of the main line, Gaultier and a hint of Givenchy’s last few collections.

  • Anonymous

Be interesting to see if any of those shoe covers show up on the red carpet. I can definitely see several of these looks being worn. If nothing else I bet a we see them on a Kardashian or two.

  • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

    Ugly clothes, ugly styling.

  • Anonymous

I could see some of these appealing to Nicole Kidman (not that the should indulge the conceit).

  • Anonymous

The staging is not helping this collection at all.  That gold mirrored staircase just screams Vegas or Latin America model search TV contest.   Lends a tacky quality to the clothes.

  • Anonymous

How awful. And what in God’s name is with the shoes?

  • aimee_parrott

I saw the title of this post and said, “OOH, Atelier Versace!” and clicked on it with all the hope and anticipation in the world.  Then it was all, “oooooh… atelier versace.  what happened?”

    I has a sad now.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the boob brows at all. The rest of it feels very deja vu to me.

  • Anonymous

Bad Project Runway responses to a “be avant-garde” challenge?

  • Anonymous

Maybe they are showing to the public instead of private clients because they are no longer members of Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

  • Anonymous

Eww!  Is it just me or do the models look like they have talking boobs?

  • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo VicksieDo

I love these.  Especially the two green ones.

  • Anonymous

Those strange bra cups look like eyelids to me. No thanks.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BMEASIKJSVE6YP3DE2VLJA5CUU JulieJ

I hate this external bra cup thing.  In this case the hate is more extreme as the bra cup has eyebrows.

  • Anonymous

Dear Lord, what is that THING the last model wearing?

And I hope they were given nice underwear, clomping around that mirrored floor.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, dry Gaga but not in a god way. Gimmicky

  • Anonymous

Most of this looks like something I would have expected to see on an episode of the original Star Trek series.

    WHY?

  • Anonymous

Not flattering, functional, fitted, flirty, fun, fabulous…..  pffffffffff.

  • Anonymous

Those bra cups will not hold much more than a little A cup. What will the rest do?

  • Anonymous

I always wanted my boobs to look like squinty fish eyes.

  • Anonymous

This collection will go down in fashion disaster history.  Someone’s head is going to roll for this.

  • Anonymous

What is up with the cups of these dresses? The only one I even remotely like is the last green one

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

what the hell’s with the kim kardashian styling?

  • Anonymous

The whole thing is hideous, from start to finish.

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I usually look forward to a new Atelier Versace collection like most people look forward to Christmas, and I’m always blown away by how fierce and beautiful the clothes are. This is so disappointing.

  • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

The first three gowns look like the same dress with a few detail changes. In fact, it seems to me there are, at most, three basic styles being used here, with some changes in the detail. Plus, everything’s kind of tacky, as though they’re going for the “nouveau riche with no taste” set.

This is a big disappointment. I usually love Atelier Versace.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    Spats.

    Spats!

One hardly knows what to say.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angelica-Smith-Mertens/150401222 Angelica Smith Mertens

The jacket in the 6th picture is pretty cool…the rest…a tad scary.  Maybe that’s why big designers like this thrust their clothes on celebrities…because who the hell would buy them!  LOL

  • Anonymous

o man… some of these dresses make it seem like these women were slashed open!!!
also.. the first couple dresses can be summed up here: http://www.millionlooks.com/people-and-events/celebrities/blake-lively-covers-her-legs-for-green-lantern-premiere-in-hollywood/

  • Anonymous

“Clumsy-looking”?  No way!  They look awesome, I love heavily built and structured looks like this that really change the shape and proportions of the body.

  • Anonymous

I am posting for the first time here to register my disbelief of this collection.  I cannot stop laughing at this.  Every time I look at one I giggle in disbelief.  Are they kidding?  Donatella, seriously?  At best it is a tacky ripoff of Givenchy and some Chanel looks.  And at worst…..  Yeah, Original Star Trek isn’t too far off.

And the footwear…. I mean….. WTF?  What are those things covering their ankles?  Oh my goodness, I cannot believe this came from Atelier Versace.  I would never have believed that if the title didn’t say so.

Why do all of the models remind me of Kim Kardashian?

Why does model #2 have lips on her boobs?! Seriously, it looks like her chest is turning into one of Jim Henson’s weirder nightmares.

Hate it all. Trashy, over-designed, jokey.
I need to look back at Oscar de la Renta from the other day to forget this.

  • Natasha Fairweather

Wow, lots of ugly on display. And where did they find so many Kardashians to model?

Most of the proportions are horrible! Half the models look thick and square…and they’re MODELS!

Not as stunning as Atelier Versace normally is, but some of the looks are still quite beautiful, in my opinion.

I like the blue jacket, sixth photo down.

Not loving it.  Versace Atelier usually gets a big WOW and this gets a whimper.

Very Kim Kardashian.  And that’s not a compliment.

  • Anonymous

Hate most of it but I could see Gaga rocking some of the collection. Only Gaga, though. Uninspiring in the extreme.

Some of these dresses made me think of Austen’s Miss Piggy dress.

  • oohsparkley!

Why all the ugly spat-like things on their shoes?  Why, oh why?

Holy weird. I can see some of the mini dresses being styled down for a movie premiere. But the long ones are beyond saving. In addition to Gaga, I see Fergie wearing some of these.

  • Anonymous

i see  angelina in the long grey gowns, esp. look#2 and #4.  but the second one does look like the breasts might bite!  rooney mara could rock many of these, i would love to see her in the first yellow mini.  i think we will see many of these on the red carpet this year- which is not to say that they’ll all look good.

i don’t know, i must be in a weird mood today because i actually like most of these.  call me strange…
