WERQ: Rooney Mara in Prabal Gurung

Posted on December 15, 2011

Watching Rooney Mara do the international poledance for her new movie, we’re struck by two things. 1) She really loves unusual dresses with cutouts, and 2) She may just have found her perfect designer in Prabal Gurung.

We thought that Givenchy she was wearing the other day did her no favors, but somehow the girl pulled off an unprecedented styling reversal of fortune, because this is the best we’ve ever seen her look.

Yeah, it’s a weird dress, but she clearly feels the need to work a Weird Girl persona right now (and who knows? Maybe she really is one) so this suits her perfectly. A dress like this is not at all easy to wear and we think that’s obvious at first glance. That she’s not only wearing it, but rocking it, is a testament to what happens when a gal finds just the right dress for her.

Also, she did something pretty awesome with those horrible bangs she’s been sporting. You WERQ that chic, weird shit, girl!

I hate the dress but it actually looks pretty good on her

    • Anonymous

      100% agree.

      • Anonymous

Agreed. only person in the ENTIRE world who could look that good in this dress.

        • Cathy S

I agree with all the agreeing.

    • Anonymous

It really is kind of ugly, isn’t it? It’s hard to deny that she looks fierce, though.

  • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

She’s just practicing for when she gets styled in weird looks for women’s magazines to promote the Dragon movie. You know, like when Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis had to wear every ballerina-inspired ensemble west of the Pecos.

    • Anonymous

I actually wish actresses would show up for these things not so closely styled like their characters.  I think it’s a lot more impressive when they turn in a good performance and they’re NOTHING like the character they play onscreen.  If she showed up in a pink dress and was gushing about how much of a girly-girl she is, you’d watch her as Salander and go OH DAMN.

      • Anonymous

She played Mark Zuckerberg’s girfriend in the Social Network (she’s mostly in the opening scenes where they’re having that intense discussion at a table in a restaurant). I never would have guessed the same gal is playing Salander. But I would have figured she’s more like the preppy Social Network character in real life and still suspect it.

        • Anonymous

“But I would have figured she’s more like the preppy Social Network character in real life and still suspect it.”

Yeah.  Her ‘edginess’ has an air of TRYING TOO HARD.  Having said that, she does pull off the Salander look in the movie.

  • Frank Quotes

Looks lovely except for the loinclothy part in the front.

  • Anonymous

Few could pull that dress off and she’s doing it, so nice to see those gawd awful Dragon Tat bangs dealt with, they were taking away from her lovely face which is fully in focus here…

    • Anonymous

Yes! At first I couldn’t put my finger on why she looked so much better than other recent appearances and then I realized it was the absence of those hipster bangs! Huge improvement. I almost like the dress…not quite enough coverage for my taste.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043171034 Tadiana Walton Jones

I’m so deliriously excited at the disappearance of those 3-Year-Old-Mommy-I-Gave-Myself-a-Haircut bangs that I’ll give anything she’s wearing an In.  It wouldn’t be the dress for me (or anyone in my circle of friends) but she’s rocking it.

  • Anonymous

I love it when the actress looks better in the clothes than the model.

    • Anonymous

Yes, it really can be quite the accomplishment.

  • Anonymous

omg it looks like she went through a paper shedder!!! but i agree that only a few can pull this dress off and she is one of those people!

  • Anonymous

Sorry, flimsy black net says Frederick’s of Hollywood no matter how it’s deployed. She looks good, but it’s still a cheesy dress — kind of a GaGa feel to it.

  • Anonymous

    Neo Robert Palmer

    • Leslie Streeter

      She’s addicted to fug!

  • Anonymous

    Wow.

  • Anonymous

It’s rare that I disagree with you guys 100%, but this is one of those times.  Hate the dress–looks like it was created by Edward Scissorhands on a serious bender.  And she’s so icy pale that when she goes all black, she looks like she’ll be looking for a neck to bite whenever the hunger pangs start.

  • foodycat

Wow – she looks so good you don’t even see how hideous the dress is! That is how to make stripper-widow look chic!

  • Anonymous

What a weird and spectacular dress!  The back is really breathtaking, and she looks awesome in it with her milk-and-roses complexion.  As a pretty stoic straight woman, I’m not prone to little gay gasps, but this look really did knock an “oh!” out of me as I scrolled down.

I felt awful for her in the shots with Daniel Craig, but she’s completely redeemed herself.  Hooray for second acts!

  • Anonymous

I think the dress looks really different on her than on the model which makes me pretty uneasy about the whole body image in modelling then because she looks pretty thin herself, but she fills out the dress whereas it looks like a tent on the model. I absolutely love the back of it. My only issue is with the shoes. BORING and clunky. She should have gone for something silver and strappy/complicated.

    • Anonymous

Ooh I love the shoes! Except that they look a little too big on her. Must have been borrowed.

  • Anonymous

Hate the cutouts but she does look beautiful.

  • Anonymous

A WERQ is perfect for making a borderline silly dress look fierce. Well done Ms. Mara.

(Her name sounds backward to me. I always want to call her Mara Rooney.”

    • Anonymous

Her birth name is Patricia ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

It’s sort of disconcerting – like she’s not quite dressed all the way (espcially with the innocent pose/look on her face) but the hair is so so so so so much better – she is suddenly beautiful.  Isn’t it wild what a diffference that made!?!  So, WERQ!

  • Anonymous

She looks gorgeous!   I hated the dress at first but the more I look at it, the more I like it.

  • Leslie Streeter

Don’t like it. A dingo ate her dress.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Awful dress but perfectly gorgeous on her, esp. for this role. Fierce is exactly the right word!

  • Linde Hoff

Wow — fantastic!  I just heard her interviewed on NPR, and she is a little offbeat in personality.  The dress matches her character, now that I’ve learned more about her on a personal level.

  • MilaXX

This works on her and I’m glad to see her do something better with that hair. She seems to also favor the shoulders/back, but I watched her walk out on Dave Letterman and girlfriend is slouchy.

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

She looks beautiful because she is beautiful and her hair, makeup and the neckline all accentuate her face.  But below the neckline?  That dress is tragic.

  • Susana Reyes

She looks great. But I wish she would have smiled in one shot or something. : /

  • http://twitter.com/chelwi Christine

She looks great in this dress! I would probably walk out of the house with my arms coming out the wrong holes.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Well, not my taste but I can appreciate that it WERQs to some degree on her.

  • Terence Ng

It’s fine, but I hate that front piece. It says “Hi, I’m wearing a smock/apron.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=717883898 Glynis Fediuk

Glad to see this as a WERQ as I think she looks fab. Her face: I want it.

  • Anonymous

that front flap — it doesn’t seem possible but that one piece of fabric is really ruining it somehow

  • Anonymous

Not liking anything about that dress except the sheer back with buttons.  It just seems weird for weirdness’ sake, not at all flattering.  Just this side of Bjork.  Agree, tho, that her hair and makeup is an improvement.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=675517274 Nora Halcyonov Lynnenko Naught

The dress looks better on her than it did on the model!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Could be because the model looks like she’s about to tear your beating heart out of you, while you watch.  Crazy eyes!

  • Anonymous

Um, no.  She’s pretty, though.  I sort of liked what she wore on Letterman last night, also unusual but not goofy.

  • Anonymous

You know, she’s from NFL royalty… one side owns the NY Giants, the other, the Pittsburgh Steelers…
and she should thank the good Lord for styling gel!!

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

And her sister is Kate Mara, who plays Horny Hayden on American Horror Story.

  • http://twitter.com/lisalou2 Lisa Pizza

The look on her face is so vacant but overall she makes the dress work as long as you don’t look too closely at the dress. The loin cloth front really ruins it.

  • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

Well, it certainly is an interesting dress, and not part of the holiday RC snoozefest, so props.  And I was thinking the same thing: she finally found the perfect solution to growing out those hideous bangs.  The make-up is perfect for the look, too.  Besides the GWTDT red carpet is the perfect place for a dark, goth-chic look.  Well done!

  • Anonymous

    Holy crap.

  • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

I disagree. The dress looks bad on her and the model. It’s the vajayay flap that kills it. It’s nice from the hips up.

  • Anonymous

    I’m sorry, no.

  • Anonymous

I dislike the side thigh cut outs, yet still agree with this as a WERQ.  She looks lovely, polished and well suited to the dress and style.  The back is especially lovely, and the shoe is a perfect choice.  I also like the deep shade of red lip.

    • foodycat

It really is a gorgeous lipstick colour, isn’t it? Best thing about the whole look, IMO.

    • Anonymous

I agree with you on the thigh cut outs.  I can live with the ones on the upper body, but to have them on the bottom too is just overkill.

  • http://democracydiva.com/ Democracy Diva

    Love.

  • Anonymous

Work it! Also, I love that she’s another pale girl who doesn’t feel the need to spray tan.

    Love it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/laura.jane.ogorman Laura O’Gorman

    Wow. She looks stunning!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1396777506 Christin Pardy-Nosenchuk

She should have kept the shoes from the runway look.

  • taodon

I approve, if only because she managed to challenge every tired red carpet movie premiere trope out there, do it well, and came back to punch us in the face for even considering a negative thought.  Modern, chic, and perfect for her.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I think I would really like the dress if it wasn’t for that hem.  The dress is unique enough with the neckline, it didn’t need that weird bottom as well.

  • Anonymous

I really dislike the front of the dress, I just find it Not Attractive and it doesn’t do anything much for the wearer.

I will say I think the back is intriguing (I’d love the back if the skirt were not cut-out on the sides).

But, she is wearing it, it is not wearing her, which is about as good as I think this dress can do for its wearer.

Usually a successful edgy look gives its wearer the look of having a little swagger in the step & stomp in the stride. So not so, here: the peek-a-boo cut outs under sheer on the legs/thighs give it, in my eyes, a whiff of the candy-box style boudoir that sucks the power right out of it.

  • Anonymous

Hiding the bangs made 100% difference. There’s no way I could have taken her seriously in this dress, or any other, with those bangs. Now she’s a WOW!

  • Anonymous

Each picture is more beautiful than the last.  Bravissima.

  • Anonymous

She is the love child of Tilda and Cate.  I predict she will be able to pull off the most unusual looks in WERQ fashion.

  • Sara__B

WERQing the weird and making me like a long check-list of things I don’t like. Well done.

  • Anonymous

YES. LOVE. There are not enough people working weird chic shit on red carpets. REPRESENT, MS MARA.

  • Anonymous

Gorgeous.  She somehow makes a dress that’s obviously sexy a little demure.  The dress was made for her.  Flawless hair and makeup just seal the deal.

Fun to say put loud:Rooney Mara in Prabal Gurung

  • Anonymous

i am in total agreement boys.

  • Anonymous

Oh my god, I LOVE IT.

  • Anonymous

Dres: perfect. Hair, makeup: perfect. Shoes: way too bland for this dress. She doesn’t need anything too attention-grabbing, just something more unexpected. Still, this is a 9.5 in my book.

  • Anonymous

I LOVE the back but I think this dress would have been perfect if the hem was lower on those side cut-outs. If it was a gown it would be effing phenomenal.

  • Anonymous

It looks better on her than on the model. WERQ it, gurl!

  • Anonymous

Crazy dress but she’s WERQing it.  She looks fabulous.

  • Anonymous

It’s an awful dress but she makes it work. Extra points for that!

  • CQAussie

Agree….not a look I would favour but she is selling the hell out of it!  well done.

  • Anonymous

She has such an interesting and quirky face–and she dresses in interesting and quirky clothes.

  • Anonymous

Better than the model.  Good Job!

And yeah, her handlers have probably asked her to rock the edgy shit during this promo stint.

  • Anonymous

I love the neckline, hate the cutouts.

  • Anonymous

Dang, she looks fierce and all she’s wearing is a black loincloth covered with netting. Wednesday Addams growed up.

  • Susan Crawford

Rooney grew up in the same town as I did, and I recall seeing her here and there as she grew up. She was always beautiful, and as a young woman, she is exquisite. While I am not 100% sold on this dress, I will say that Ms. Mara’s innate classiness makes it look fabulous. (Just imagine someone like Kim Kardashian in this dress and you’ll see what I mean. Once you stop screaming and clutching your burning eyeballs, that is!)

  • Anonymous

I like the back of the dress, but the front makes my eyes/soul hurt

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_66KPZ36LMHMRQOX3HIJGHRNNUA MandyM

I am not a fan of that dress but it does look great on her. Her hair and make up are great too!

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Wow! I can’t even think of someone else who could wear that dress. She looks awesome!

  • Anonymous

That is a cool, edgy dress, though I would prefer the sheer panels more opaque (yes, I’m second-guessing Prabal Gurung–ill-advised, I know).  A cool pair of shoes would have made this flawless.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1214755227 Meira Niibori

I don’t really like the dress itself, but I can’t deny that she looks pretty damn awesome here.  I love it when very pale people a) embrace their paleness instead of doing the fake bake, and b) don’t shy away from dark rich colors and black.

And I know I’m in an extreme minority here, but I don’t hate the bangs.  Now that they’ve grown out from super-duper-short to just above her eyebrows, I don’t think they look bad at all.  Best haircut in the world?  Not even close.  But they highlight her eyes nicely, and the sleek black hair in the precise cut is a million times better than sloppy fried yoga hair.  So while I like her hair do here, I don’t think it’s a problem to keep the bangs for a bit.  Besides – aren’t there 2 more movies yet to make?  I doubt she wants to grow out the hair now and then go through the whole cut&grow two more times later.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m about as anti cut-out as it is possible to be and considering the amount of skin she’s showing?  The fact that she looks gorgeous and sophisticated is a triumph.

    WERQ.

  • Anonymous

if there were only no loincloth!
anyway, the rest looks wonderful & i am impressed that she figured out some way to slick semi-short bangs into the rest of her hair. i’m quite a bit older than she is & i still havent figured that out. only her hairdresser knows for sure. [apologies.]

  • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

ew, it only looks good from the back. Her make up is also pretty flat, she needs to figure out a way to make her lips look less pinched.

  • judi townsend

love her hair, but the dress reminds me of a black widow spider

  • Anonymous

very very cool.  i love this girl and can’t wait to see the movie.  her persona is like a walking work of art.

  • Anonymous

    LOVE.

  • http://www.gprotocol.com Advaita Waikar

I actually like the back of the dress; the front, not so much.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

It’s an awful dress, but she wears it well. I suppose we should brace ourselves for an onslaught of weird.

  • http://chupatinja.wordpress.com Santa

    Love everything :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

It screams of try hard and her need to be seen as a strange, aloof, rebel. Reading that interview in Allure has totally ruined her for me and made me cynical about all her fashion choices.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, – it’s a weird dress, but she is seriously working it!  You get the opportunity to see how beautiful she is with this hair and make-up.

  • Anonymous

There can’t be more than three women in the entire world you could wear that bizarre dress, she is lucky she is one.  It really is all about getting those bangs swept down and back here.  My only trouble here is she looks so uncomfortable to be there.  For me, part of WERQ is owning it and looking confident.

  • Anonymous

Wow, I’m not even sure I LIKE the dress, and she sells it.  Well done!

  • Anonymous

She looks good in the dress, however, I don’t like the dress at all.  What is that loin cloth in the front hiding?  That ruins it for me.

  • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

yeah agreed, she actually looks really good in this dress. mad props to her, i would have liked it a little more had it been missing the cut outs on the bottom though

  • Anonymous

    She looks dreadful.

  • Anonymous

She looks amazing and that is not easy to do in that dress with her petite height.

  • Anonymous

The hair and makeup is very Carrie Ann Moss as Trinity.  She looks great as a whole; I would like the dress better without the.. cut out hem, is that what we call it?  The neckline is fantastic, though and I love the sheer with buttons back. With as much skin as it shows, it is strangely demure.

  • Ebony Dawkins

That dress scares me. But, she is WERQing it.

  • Jam y

love the top of the dress but the bottom seems like she’s wearing a loincloth. that doesn’t go over well with this kitten.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Wong/507815939 Tim Wong

she can make see thru backless dress with cutouts look elegant…. all i can say is.. she found her right gays..
