WERQ: Princess Charlene

Posted on December 19, 2011

We admit it; we did the gay gasp.

Princess Charlene of Monaco attends the “Ein Herz für Kinder” Charity gala in Berlin.

Girl needs some serious training as to how to stand and pose in front of a wall of cameras, but that’s the only bitchy thing we’re gonna say. The dress is lovely and suits her to a T. More importantly (from a picture-taking perspective), the color is absolutely stunning on her.

You WERQ that Princess Grace, shit, girl! Where’s your tiara?

How much weight did she lose?
She does look beautiful.  She kinda looks like Charlize Theron a bit, doesn’t she?

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I doubt she had much to lose.  She was a competitive swimmer after all.  I think it’s just that she dressed in something that suits her frame for a change.

      • Anonymous

I agree-this gown really suits her body type-when you have such lovely shoulders, strapless works.

    • Anonymous

Funny you should mention Charlize – that’s who I was expecting when I half-read the headline. And i was wondering what sort of work (as opposed to werq) she’d had done… and what her meds cocktail consisted of.  For a former model such as she, this would be inexcusable posing. But for Charlene, a mere princess, she’s fine. The dress is gorj.

Agreed. Great dress on her and she looks beautiful, but what is UP with that horrifying posture? Girl, you’re a princess now! Slouching not permitted!

    • Anonymous

She looks like she’s trying to make her shoulders smaller, like she’s apologizing for her body. The color and fit are lovely on her.

  • Anonymous

She always looks so much happier when she’s not with him, have you noticed?

    • Anonymous

Yes, and it is hardly surprising.

    • Anonymous

And unlike Cathy, she seems to be going out of the way NOT to show the ring…

  • http://twitter.com/Deac82 Mike M.

    She’s a princess–I need more bling!

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Agreed. She needs a fabulous necklace, a bracelet, or both before I can concur with the “WERQ” assessment!

      • Anonymous

I’m thinking this is another TLo Werq graded on a curve.  They feel sorry for Charlene, so any time she isn’t crying or looking miserable on Albert’s arm, they go overboard with too high a grade.  She’s definitely NOT werqing it. Instead, she looks like she’s trying to hide.   The dress is pretty but the makeup is too understated and the jewelry is too wimpy.  Werqing requires confidence, which Charlene is unfortunately lacking.

  • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

Her new face seems to be settling in nicely!

  • Anonymous

I love that little dimple on her arm.

    • Anonymous

I don’t know that I “love” it, but I can’t stop looking at it!

      • Anonymous

I just find it reassurngly human without being an actual “flaw.”

    • Anonymous

      vaccination scar

      • Anonymous

You may be right; but isn’t she a bit too young to have one?  And they’re usually on the left arm (mine is)…

        • Anonymous

Maybe some other kind of scar??  Anyhow–I applaud her for not being afraid to show it!

          • Anonymous

most likely a vaccination scar, common sign that you grew up in a tropical climate.

        • Lourdes Salvador

I’m 25 and I have one, and in the right arm…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

GORGEOUS.  However, is it just me or does she look heavily sedated?

    • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

Yeah, she has a punchy look about her.

  • Anonymous

The dress is lovely and she looks pretty enough, but she cannot hold a candle to Grace Kelly, not even close.

Charlene always looks ill at ease, even when she’s smiling. Whenever I see her I cannot help wondering how much money it took to get her to stay with that tool she married.

  • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

Eh, I much prefer Crown Princess Victoria and Crown Princess Mary (or heck, even Cathy Cambridge, most of the time). I just can’t get in to Charlene. Even looking at this, I’m underwhelmed.

  • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Love the unexpected bright red border on the clutch. It picks up on the “herz” theme on the wall behind her and surprisingly looks great with the rich dark burgundy of her dress.

And I’m loving her soft makeup and hair, and the water droplet-look of her earrings. I’m always a fan of necklaces with strapless dresses, but still: WERQ!

  • Anonymous

That dress matches your website, too! :-)

  • iCouture

OMG, I always gasp when you two gasp…. but then…   I saw her terrible posture, her shiny skin, and hot mess hair…  then I calmed down.
    Dress is pretty though…

  • Anonymous

    She’s lovely

  • Anonymous

    Lovely! J’approve

  • Anonymous

Lone dissenter here, but I think the dress looks dated and mature. She should wear Alexander McQueen or Tom Ford, I think.

  • Anonymous

She looks a lot happier here than on her wedding day. Makes all the difference.

To be fair, I almost always look happier than I did in most of the photos of my wedding day — I had to be around my new in-laws and while wearing less than comfortable clothing for far too long.  Plus people kept wanting to take my picture.

Finally, I refused and told them that they had me in enough poses to photoshop me in if necessary and went and had a smoke and a glass of wine.  There are a couple where my husband made me giggle, but most of them I look horribly unhappy.

      • Anonymous

I’m getting married next May and I am not one to get my picture taken, so I have no idea how I’m going to react to all the brouhaha. I do not photograph well – slogging through the proofs shoud be an adventure, lol.

        • Anonymous

Oh, I hope you practice before the day! Like everything in life, you can get better at being photographed! Consider an engagement photo shoot with your wedding photographer. I’ve heard from more than one couple that the value in it is not so much the “narcissism” of a bunch of casual-wear photos, but that it’s a great help in learning how to be comfortable with the process, the photographer, and what expressions and poses work for them. And Mazel Tov! :)

          • Anonymous

Thank you! And thanks for the advice, I might try that. :)

This looks almost exactly like my bridesmaid dress for my sister’s wedding in December, 2001, except that we didn’t have to deal with the horrible “pit meat” phenomenon that strapless dresses cause almost everyone to have.

In other words, I like my bridesmaid dress better than this…

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

she does look lovely, and far more relaxed that usual.  I agree with those who have said she could have upped the bling a notch or two. A serious necklace would have taken this into WERQland for me. Without it, its just really really good.

  • Anonymous

I’m as surprised as anyone to have empathy/sympathy for a gorgeous, tall blonde swimming champion who just just literally married into royalty, but I do. She seems so lovely and with so much potential and it’s obviously such an unhappy pairing, I can’t help myself. She’s no Grace Kelly, but I do see reasonable comparisons with Diana, and hope she can find similar happiness in some corners of her gilded cage.

  • Anonymous

    it looks so…….tattered and torn??

  • Anonymous

She looks gorgeous!  I would have gone for some neck bling, though.

  • http://twitter.com/MissAmynae Amy Putnam Ellinger

yes, yes a thousand times YES!!

“I said No Camels!” –Indiana Jones, also applies to the princess. Though in her case, it’s just a “take a break from the gorgeous camel coats for a night or two and bust out some incredible color, you gorgeous woman!”

  • Anonymous

Omg she’s not a princess-bot! That is a gorgeous dress. WERQ.

  • Anonymous

It’s a beautiful dress, but I think she is not only very uncomfortable posing, but has a haunted look to her.

  • Judy_J

Love the dress, but she could use a bit more sparkle.  Yes, a tiara would have been nice.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love the dress.  The color is gorgeous!  I never would have picked it for her, but she looks fab in it.

  • MilaXX

That is a royal WERQ! Go’on girl!

  • Anonymous

Really? I am totally underwhelmed. The make-up is awful.

Whenever I see “Princess Charlene” in your tweets that link here, I always immediately think of Charlene Frasier Stillfield (Designing Women) as the princess in question. /coolstorybro

  • Linde Hoff

A necklace or something would have been nice…didn’t need to be huge, but something.  Who’s the designer of this getup?

  • Anonymous

That dress, that color are gorgeous. Totally WERQ.

  • Anonymous

I think she needs more diamonds! But the dress is lovely and she looks more relaxed.

  • Lisa

She looks gorgeous!  And the gown reminds me of the one Scarlett wore in “Gone With the Wind” when she goes all tarted up to Ashley’s birthday party!

  • Sara__B

Gorgeous dress on a stunning (but self-conscious) woman. All that’s missing are royal jewels and royal confidence.

  • http://twitter.com/tommarkiewicz88 tom markiewicz

horrible choice using the same material for the wrap though; it makes her completely shapless through the waist.

  • Anonymous

Pretty dress, I agree with other posters – it needs a necklace, but the color is not working with her complexion – it is bringing out all the blotchy red undertones.

  • Anonymous

i wonder what her real story is. if it’s bad, which it might well be, i hope someone can tell her that it may be bad but she will get used to it, people always do, no matter what it is. & w/ her it cant be that terribly terrible–she at least gets to do fun things & wear magnificent clothing. i am not trying to make fun of her sadness, if she is sad. just lay on some hope. cos she does get to do great things sometimes &, besides, even though the catch, itself, is great–he–he–well, isnt as great as the catch, itself. if i makes sense which, in this case, i probably do.

    • Anonymous

the fun will last if she produces a male heir. if she doesn’t, well… all the pretty clothes and magnificent occasions in the world won’t save her.

i generally like Charlene’s style, especially the more informal outfits she wears that tend to compliment rather than overemphasize her athlete’s shoulders.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Wow. This just totally doesn’t speak to me. I agree with earlier posters who noted that this looks like an early-2000s bridesmaid’s dress,  and she looks sedated. Poor girl.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Maybe without the matching shawl, I could see the dress better, but she looks like a bird, of some sort.  Ah well, at least its an actual color, not beige or cream like she usually wears.

  • Anonymous

Pretty, yes.  WERQ, no.  To me, that dress is close to swallowing her whole but I think that might be the posture issues.  The hair seems a little less than it could be and girl, grab a diamond necklace next time.  There should be some just laying around the palace…

  • Anonymous

Agree, she is stunning!  I gasped as well.

  • Anonymous

She’s wearing a color AND she’s smiling!  Go read Lainey’s post on this to see the comparison of stupid Prince Albert in his Florida Retirement Trunks™ and just think how much fun she must be having in comparison.

  • marilyn

The dress is gorgeous, but I think she should have stepped up her makeup.  The dress was so dark it makes her face look washed out.  I give her a 9 of 10.

  • Vanessa Torrado

Recently she has only been photographed with coats on. Even indoors. Usually her posture is better. I wonder if the weird stance is because she is self-conscious about the baby bump she can’t really hide in that dress. She looks stunning. Great dress. Great everything other than the posing. And that posing is hiding something.

  • young.stephanie62

I am so tired of people saying negative things about Princess Charlene. She is a former olympic swimmer, school teacher, and she helps people with disabilities swim. I think is is very beautiful inside and out because she does great charity work. I do not think it matters what she wears or who she is married to. She looks happy to me I do not see anything wrong with her. I did not see anything wrong her on her wedding day. Monaco’s royals have different religion at wedding ceremonies. They are different from other royal weddings because every country is different. I do not think Princess Grace looked so happy on her wedding day either until after the ceremony. She cried so what everyone’s emotions are different only she knows why she was crying. We should be talking about the good she is doing as Princess of Monaco for her charity the Princess Charlene Foundation instead of stupid clothes. I think she is a beautiful example for Monaco and South Africa should be proud. Anyone that hates on her needs to look at themselves and get a life.

    Love, love, love that color!!

  • Anonymous

She is lovely.  I would have liked to see her in a diamond choker.  Without the douchetool she married holding the leash.

  • bloodshothalfblind

she’s a beautiful girl, but i hate that dress.  it’s awful, shapeless & does nothing for her.  maybe it’s just the way she’s standing, but it looks like she just wrapped the bolt of fabric around her & called it a dress.  for all her beauty & fortune, she deserves a better gown.
