Serena Williams in Donna Karan

Posted on December 01, 2011

So close, Serena. You could have had a “WERQ it, girl!” post out of this one. We’re pretty sure that news has left you breathless with tears and disappointment.

But chin up, honey. There’s so much to be happy about here:

Serena Williams in Donna KaranSerena Williams attends the 25th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards in New York City in Donna Karan.

Your body looks SLAMMIN’, that dress is HOT, and your hair is FIERCE. So why is girlfriend wearing clearance table Payless on her feet?

Sorry, doll! We had to say it!

Totally agree. The dress is killer but those shoes need to die.

      • Anonymous

        In fire!

        • Sara__B

I don’t know. They look fireproof to me.

          • Anonymous

Or highly combustible. One or the other.

Or highly combustible. One or the other.

          • Anonymous

Agreed. They just might melt, though, maybe in an industrial oven.

            • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043171034 Tadiana Walton Jones

And when you melt them in the oven, I’m pretty sure they morph into a little gold dwarf who tells you to climb up the mountain and throw three drops of holy water into the river to turn it into gold. … Yeah, I was reading this old fairy tale to my kids last night. :D

    • Anonymous

Whatever about the shoes. Everything is just unbelievably perfect and stunning. Never seen her this amazing.

    • Anonymous

She ruined a spectacular look with those God-forsaken shoes. I don’t think I’ve seen her look this good (shoes excepted).

    • Anonymous

She makes the dress look SO much better than on the model.  (please designers, consider woman shaped models, at least some times)  And agree the shoes are ugly.  Of course they probably would cost $800, but still, ugly.

      • Anonymous

So true!  A very curvy woman should have modeled this dress on the runway, instead of the little waif who had to bend her torso in six different directions so as not to get lost in all that jersey!

      • Anonymous

Hey, I am shaped like the model and I’m a woman. ;)

      • Anonymous

Not sure what “woman shaped” means but Serena is a professional athlete who has spent her career working out and playing a sport at the top level.  One could make a case that even fewer women have a shape like Serena than the model originally wearing the dress.

    • http://twitter.com/revjospa Joanne Robertson

Concur! They look like those Play dress up shoes you get from the drugstore for $1.99 ugh…

    • Tom Shea

Since it’s a party for Footwear News I’m going to assume the shoes are custom made and are solid gold. From thew ankles up, she’s almost otherworldly.

    • Anonymous

Is her right big toe at a horrific angle, or am I seeing things?  Otherwise, she looks stunning – and holy mother of Atlas – what calves!

      • Anonymous

Probably from when it almost got amputated. Wasn’t that why she missed so much time after Wimbledon a few years back?

    • Judy_J

Yes, so close.  Those shoes are just awful, although my 5 year old granddaughter would probably disagree with me.

      • Anonymous

Yep, my 5 yr old would love them too. Shiny and a big bow! Now if they only had pink rhinestones.

    • Anonymous

Hot dress. Great hair and makeup. Hideous shoes.

    • Mariah J

Horrible shoes…but those aside this is the best I’ve ever seen her look.

    • Anonymous

OK, wait a minute.  It’s the Footwear News Achievement Awards, right?  So wouldn’t it be important to choose appropriate footwear? Just sayin’.

    • Anonymous

Those shoes at the 25th Annual FOOTWEAR News Achievement Awards…!  A stylist  mis-step  here, to be sure.   Fiercer footwear should have abounded at this function.

      All the best,

      NDC

    • Anonymous

Never seen her looking better – shoes and all.
I still have a deep and abiding vendetta against her for dating my back-up-husband Common though.

      • Anonymous

Back-up husband!  LOL!  I’ve heard of “future husband,” but this must mean you’re already married and have Common on ice, just in case?  :)

        • Anonymous

Yes, that is exactly the back-up-husband concept. lol
The best part is that I get to talk about him freely in this manner because hubby takes the blame for introducing me to Common in the first place. Hubby is a hip hop head and longtime Common fan and I became smitten on a concert date. Yum!

    • Julie Fountain

      Yep, classic scrolldown fug.

    • CQAussie

This is a perfect example of a Scroll Down Fug.  It’s BAM, fab hair!  WOW, fab dress!!  And HOT DAMN, amazing bod!!!  And then THUNK….hooker shoes for the naughty elf.  What a shame.

      • foodycat

        Naughty elf bahahaha! Perfect description!

I would have liked maybe a half-inch more breathing space for her in the dress, but it is such a minor quibble.

    • Anonymous

Yes–to a FOOTWEAR NEWS awards show!  Such a shame because she is werqing that dress into an early grave!

    • iCouture

Wow, she looks HOT!!!!  But, yeah, second verse same as the first, the shoes are bad…

As a huge tennis fan, I’m just happy to see her in such great shape, hope it produces results on the court!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

      Too right.  Shoes are awful.

    • Anonymous

Well to be fair, those shoes are an achievement of something….just not very positive or fashionable.

    • Rhonda Hanson

i think i am now a donna karan fan – maybe i am getting older. but this is so work appropriate and evening appropriate i got to have it.

    • Anonymous

I knew what you were gonna say…oy, those shoes! What were you thinking, honey?

    • Anonymous

Oh come one… she looks fabulous!!

    • Anonymous

These shoes should be burned!  Otherwise, she looks fierce!

    • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

Yeah, she looks fierce, except for those shoes. She needed some cute little strappy numbers.

    • Anonymous

She does look great!!! She looks smaller than I remember her looking. YOu had better be careful, though, TLo. She might threaten to shove those gaudy shoes down your throat!!!

      • MilaXX

I think she looks smaller because she’s wearing a dress that fits. A lot of the time her dresses are too tight and it makes her look bigger.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      She looks stunning.

    • S. B. Hadley Wilson

      She looks amazing!

    • Rand Ortega

      *Sniff Sniff*
      What’s that awful smell?
      It’s those SHOES!
The odor of their ugliness wafts like those trails in cartoons!
Serena, double check below the ankles next time!
      You look FIERCE otherwise!

    • Anonymous

It’s still a WERQ from me, I’m just pretending those shoes aren’t there. Agree with other posters, I’ve never seen her look this good. And that dress is MADE for curvy women…very nice, DK!

    • Anonymous

There is an award for everything.

    • Anonymous

I really don’t like her AT ALL but she looks so much better than her usual hoochiness. But I think she has a bit of a titscrepancy, no?

    • Anonymous

I really don’t like her AT ALL but she looks so much better than her usual hoochiness. But I think she has a bit of a titscrepancy, no?

    • Anonymous

She looks amazing–dress and body. Damn.

    • Sara__B

Serena looks better than I’ve ever seen her, even with those metallic shoes. (If the Footwear News Achievement Awards gives prizes to attendees, Serena would be a contender for both “shiniest” and “biggest bow”.)

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

those shoes are straight up hiddy.

    • Anonymous

BWAH hahaha.  You’re so right, those shoes, gahk!

    • Anonymous

As soon as I scrolled down and saw the shoes I knew you boys would hate them. I must agree.

    • Carla Williams

According to Red-Carpet Fashion Awards, those are Giuseppe Zanotti shoes–not that they don’t lookPaylessy…

    • Anonymous

Especially considering her proclivity for hookerwear, this is truly major.  Except the shoes.

    • MilaXX

She look great!  Loving the hair and makeup, especially the hair. I kinda don’t mind the shoes. Bows a little big, but I like the idea of a gold shoe here.

    • Anonymous

Wow.  Looking very fine, girl.  Love her hair.  Don’t straighten it please, honey, those curls are gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

TLo, you are so right. Everything is great … then … really bad shoes. Still, I’d give it a WERQ or an IN from the knees up.

    • Anonymous

” 25th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards”?  Really????

    • Anonymous

That dress looks so much better on her than on the model. This is like a “Girl, that is SO your dress” post.

    • Anonymous

      gets a WERQ from me!

    • http://twitter.com/ChipsterTM Chipster TM

I am sad now because I totally loved those shoes before I read your opinions :( I have cheap taste!

    • Anonymous

I actually let a huge groan of disappointment at the shoes. WHY? That’s the best she’s EVER looked and then THE SHOES HAPPEN.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

I have serious calf envy…but those shoes are shiny death on a stiletto.

      3/4 Werq?

    • Anonymous

Too funny that it’s a footwear event and it’s her shoes that blow.

    • Anonymous

Even Barbie would think those shoes are tacky.  And her nail polish is making them worse, if that’s possible.

    • Anonymous

      Oo (shudder)  those shoes.

    • Anonymous

The dress is snug without being too tight, and she looks great in it.  I don’t always like dresses with fussy draping or “interesting” twists, but this one works.  If I had one quibble (I am pretending the shoes don’t exist): I feel that I can see a foundation garment hem on her thigh.

Also, does she have a scar on her forehead? When did she get that? Have I just never noticed it before?

    • Anonymous

You can say what you like. I’m saying she looks great because this woman can kick my ass if I don’t.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      Egads! What a scrolldown fug.

    • Anonymous

Because the disappointment in those shoes is too much for me to bear, I’m going to pretend the “shoes” are actually the trophies of the Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards that Serena donned in a moment of lighthearted playfulness for the press. Oh Serena, you minx you!

    • Anonymous

Yep. She was totally a WERQ…until the scroll down fug. And – yet another beautiful Donna Karan dress? What’s happened to that woman? I think if her clothes as all this drapey stuff that would get into gravy at the dinner table – and now, two totally slammin’ dresses in a row! WANT!

    • Brad and Anne White

She gets it wrong most of the time and never gets the fit correct. I know it’s not an IN or OUT, but I’ll give her an IN and a couple of snaps just for the rest of the ensemble.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Renee-Rohrer-Bomar/100002942684824 Renee Rohrer Bomar

What is going on with her left boob?  It looks like she has a tiny pocket in there.  What for?  The model doesn’t have a tiny pocket.  Why does Serena need a tiny boob pocket???

    • Anonymous

Wow that is probably the best I have ever seen her look but those shoes are criminally ugly.

    • up with pod people

I can get past them because dokidokidoki oh Serena.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

she looks so great I didn’t notice her feet. Amazing all that muscle can look so good.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

But it’s CHRISTMAS and her legs are the present!

Seriously though?  Those shoes should be launched into the sun.

    • http://twitter.com/Bloodisea Barbora

She looks pretty, dress looks pretty, shoes are terrible :O

    • Anonymous

I think we could’ve given the shoes a pass here.  They look painful, but I think they work.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She looks great, her body looks more feminine than it ever has.  Bravo!  I’ll let the shoes pass since the dress is such knock out.

    • Anonymous

Agreed .  She’s slammin’ against the wall like it owes her money with the dress, hair and makeup, but the shoes are tacky.

    • http://twitter.com/SarahVotes Sarah Bailey

The shoes may be tacky, but it’s the holiday season. Give the girl a break. I think she looks awesome!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

‘Footwear News’ sounds vaguely fetish-istic to me.

    • Anonymous

      Agreed!
Pretty hair, pretty make-up, pretty dress, pretty bod, but when you get to the shoes, it’s like WAH-WAAAH. :(

    • Anonymous

I want that dress. And that body.

    • aimee_parrott

Gawd… and ESPECIALLY why is she wearing clearance table Payless to an event that’s about achievement in Footwear???

I covet that dress though — GORGEOUS.  From the ankles up she’s flawless.

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

Yep – it’s just the shoes.  She looks amazing – better than I have ever seen her.

    • Grace Armstrong

Seriously. Who on earth with all of the choices in the world would choose those gawd awful shoes. One a happier note, she looks soooo much better than the model in that dress.

    • Anonymous

She looks fab (other than those awful shoes – well I guess they might work with some other outfit?)

But just kick off those shoes and she looks damn near perfect.

    • Anonymous

I too hate the shoes but from the ankle up, that’s a WERQ if ever there was a WERQ

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

I shall ignore the silly shoes and admire her from the knees up.  The shoes are horrible, but my God, she looks FIERCE in that dress! Nice to see a real woman look just as good as a starving model in a beautiful dress.

    • Anonymous

The dress is so much better on her than on the model!

    • Anonymous

… at the ” 25th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards” no less!

    • akprincess72

She makes the model completely forgettable, but the shoes?  Oh nooooo.

    • bloodshothalfblind

that might be the best dress shes ever worn.  but those shoes! ick!
