Sarah Jessica Parker in New York

Posted on December 07, 2011

Little Sarah is off to her first day of school and she got dressed all by herself!

Sarah Jessica Parker heading to “Live with Kelly” to promote her new movie “New Year’s Eve” in New York City. SJP wears a Valentino dress and coat, Jimmy Choo shoes, and American Apparel tights.

Okay, maybe the tights are a little on the juvenile side, but we think she looks absolutely fantastic here. Love the entire look, from head to toe. It was quite smart keeping the colors in the dress, coat, and shoes as toned down as possible. SJP makes mistakes often enough, but she’s smart enough to know that a colorful dress and shoes with those tights would have made her look like a clown. Instead she looks fun and chic. Well done.

I would have chosen different shoes but I love LOVE the dress and tights. So cute!

This is fun! Especially on such cruddy NY weather.

As far as dress-up parties go, it’s very fun.  And, the tights really help to feature the shoes which are AMAZING!

Oh, to walk out of my house in Valentino…

  • Anonymous

Um, no.  The coat is nice.  That is all.

    • Cathy S

Me too. Love the coat. The rest is okay. The tights with those shoes are weird.

I really Really REALLY like those shoes.

      They are.to.die.

Even knowing that I am not good at walking in heels that high to begin with and that my lifestyle is not one where Jimmy Choos are a good idea (I spend half my day running from meeting to meeting with 5 minutes between) I LUST after these shoes! So gorgeous and impractical!

      • Anonymous

Gorgeous and impractical are the best kind of shoes. Actually gorgeous, impractical and on sale are really the BEST kind. I know I have to think, can I stand in this for 2 hour intervals, can I walk across brick streets in this, can I walk on wet marble floors in this…

Sorry, but I’m going to give that a no. I like the coat and the bag, but the dress, the tacky belt and especially the blue tights are right out.

  • Anonymous

The tights take a sophisticated outfit into Romper Room territory. Can’t abide by it.

    • Anonymous

I love that you said “abide.” Thank you.

  • Lauren Stanisic

Love that she also has someone to carry an umbrella for her :)

  • Anonymous

No. She’s 46!I don’t expect her or any 46-year-old woman to look frumpy, but this is Chloe Moretz or Hailee Steinfeld’s dress, tights, and princess coat. It’s just been too many years since she played Carrie Bradshaw (she started at 33).

  • Joseph Lamour

I think the spell is wearing off and she’s finally turning back into a smurf.

I like it all but the blue tights.  That takes her straight into Punky Brewster territory.

Little Sarah is off to her first day of school and she got dressed all by herself!

You kill me!  I saw a couple minutes of that show and the outfit looked great on TV – even those crazy tights.

Just one more thing: I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d love to have someone whose job it is to follow me around in the rain holding an umbrella over my head.

    • http://twitter.com/saturnwings Alexis

I don’t know.  I’d feel guilty.  There’s a story floating around (probably because a ton of people saw it happen) about the old dean of my university.  The day was rainy, as it was wont to be around those parts in the fall, and she’s dry because her admin is trailing behind her holding an umbrella over her head.  Meanwhile, dude is drenched.  :(

I dont’ like the tights.  They’re growing on me but only to the point where I don’t hate them.  What a garish colour on legs!

      • Anonymous

Of course. I was being tongue in cheek, and wondering if the umbrella was so large it also covered the man’s poor bald head, or if, while keeping her coif dry, he was getting all wet.  As for the tights, I think if I’d only seen them in the picture I’d have thought they were too much, but they looked good on tv.

  • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

I *love* colored tights, but they are hard to pull off. Figuratively, I mean. Literally, they come off just like black ones.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

Just snorted some soda through my nose… very funny.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks great. Yes, the tights are a bit garish, but they remind me of a sunny sky. Perfect for a rainy day!

  • Anonymous

fun, definitely. chic? I dunno. don’t like the color of the shoes with the grey outfit. and what is that dangly bit inside the right side of her coat? the too-long end of the belt?  couldn’t she find one in her size? too much going on here for me.

  • Anonymous

She is wearing a toddler dress and tights. I give up.

    • Anonymous

And a little girl princess coat.

  • Lori

I like the rest of it, but I can’t get behind the tights with it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

<3 it 100%…. the dress is fab, adore the shoes, coat is great, and love the pop of color from the tights… cheers up a rainy day

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I agree! It is always nice when I scroll down and thing, hey, I like this, and then find out you agree–because often I miss some vital problem.  I love the way the colors look here.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

    Love it!

  • Anonymous

Well, I like the coat. Otherwise, I’m keeping my mouth shut on this one.

  • Allyson Wells

Fun, maybe, but it’s still a little too teal for this outfit, in my opinion. She looks like a Na’vi from the knees down. :)

  • Daisy James

Sorry, not on board. I agree that a more colorful outfit would have been full-on clownishness, but that might be better than this, which stopped about halfway there. It’s like she’s in rehab for clownism and has had a partial relapse, and she’s hoping no one will notice.

  • Anonymous

I’m so happy you guys like the whole ensemble. I thought it looks super fun, and specially so for a rainy day. The coat is to die for!!!

Those tights are a little kindergarten but she looks lovely!

  • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

LOVE. I need that coat. Need, I tell you.

  • Anonymous

I’m 100% in agreement. I saw this photo earlier today and thought of you guys. Perfection, with a bit of a quirky edge. Sigh…wonder what it would be like to live in a reality in which I’d have somewhere to go where those fabulous shoes would be appropriate. Because wearing them to grocery shop just wouldn’t be appropriate!

  • Mary McClelland

I love love love the dress, coat, and belt. I need those shoes immediately but those tights have got to go.

I approve of color popping in this sort of outfit, but the shoes on the tights makes it really look like she elected to go to school in her ballet shoes…and fugly ones at that. A pump without the lacing might have looked better.

Oh no. She’s 46. I’m not saying that she or any 46-year-old has to dress “mature” but this is Chloe Moretz or Hailee Steinfeld’s dress, tights, and princess coat. She hasn’t been Carrie Bradshaw for awhile (she started at 33).

I saw her on the show yesterday morning and thought she looked whimsical. As you can see from the pictures, the weather in NY has been shitastic and depressing this week. It wouldn’t surprise me if she made that choice spontaneously upon looking out the window. Like Auntie Mame “needing a little Christmas,” I think we could all use a little bright-colored-tights this week.

I think this outfit is hideous.

  • http://profiles.google.com/hillaryschuster Hillary Schuster

I would have LOVED this if the tights were a slightly more sophisticated color (like emerald or bright navy). As it stands, I think it’s cute but kind of goofy.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

I love the idea, and I am a huge fan of colored tights, but I can’t help thinking these are not the right color for this outfit. I would be all over it if they were just slightly less bright. I agree – emerald or bright navy would be great. I can also see a British racing green or aubergine looking really fab with this – or even this aqua color darkened to teal.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

not feeling it – shoes are kinda fug and have a yellowish undertone, which clashes rather strongly with crazy tights.

    • Anonymous

I agree.  I might like the shoes in another color or away from the tights.  The tan color does not go well with that blue.

  • CQAussie

Have to agree – fashionably deployed….even if I would have chosen a different bright colour.  Say….a fushia coloured tights?

  • Anonymous

Oh, thank god. I was terrified you were going to go off on a tear about how terrible colored tights are. I don’t think I could give mine up.

  • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

The tights are just too much. I like everything else, though. The dress is really cute, it’s a good length, and I dig that belt. The coat is sharp as hell, although I’m not loving the color. And I’d give anything to be able to wear those shoes, which are killer.

But those tights! And I’m trying very hard to ignore the disaster that is her hair.

  • Anonymous

I love the tights, and I think it goes well with the dress, which is also cute.  I might like the shoes on their own, but I’m not sure I can get behind them with the tights.  I think it’s the color-that light tan-that’s not working for me with that turquoise.

  • Anonymous

ok, this time the outfit works.  but, i really have to take issue with someone who can’t even hold her own unbrella, & can’t wear appropriate shoes in the rain.  she is turning into a cartoon of a skinny, useless, NY socialite.  imo.

  • Anonymous

I love it. Taupe and teal looks great together. The weatherin NYC has been grey, wet, dark and sad. This outfit makes me smile. Well done SJP.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Those shoes are fierce! And I love the fact that she is playing with color. I love her, I don’t care what all the haters say – she has fun with clothing and doesn’t take it too seriously.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Oh, and the bag – I forgot to mention how fabu that bag is! I wants it! :]

  • Anonymous

I love this! Better this than some boring brown sack (ahem Angelina Jolie) in my opinion…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QP4RBTAZX6QTHZZSJ2YT7DGO7Q Brittany

Loving everything but the tights with that particular outfit…/maybe her age is an issue here as well. Those shoes are sick.

  • Anonymous

there is nothing, absolutely nothing, i dont like about this look.
    and i want that dress.

  • Sara__B

I adore that coat, and  SJP can pull off those silly tights (they’re fun for a drab gray day), but the belt bugs me — too long, too wide, and too tightly cinched. My favorite part is the designated umbrella carrier. Conspicuous consumption at its most useful!

  • Anonymous

I was pleasantly surprised when I read TLo saying they  think she looks fantastic…I do too.  It’s totally fun and a wow look.  Those tights really accentuate those fantastic shoes too.  There are not a lot of women, especially her age, that can pull this look off.  She’s set a precedent to be a bit off beat…this is just her style and it works in this case.  I enjoy that she takes risks and has fun with her fashion.  I’m always more critical of her hair and makeup…hair looks good here too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sharon.terrill Sharon Bear Terrill

I have those tights!  Well, not that *exact* pair, but I have that color from American Apparel.

  • Anonymous

I love the combination of chic and fun. I will say it would look even better on someone younger, but nothing’s perfect y’know. The coat and shoes, dayum.

  • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

I have those tights and I wish I could look half as chic as she does. I just end up looking like I was caught in an accident at the paint factory. Whatever, she looks fab.

  • Anonymous

I’m really, really not enamored with those tights with those shoes. They clash horribly.

  • Joanna Schuth

My vote is so OUT, and toss in a curmudgeonly rant about how women hobble themselves with sky-high heels.

  • Lexie

I have those tights and I love them but rarely wear them because they are so hard to style! I’m not a huge SJP fan, but I have to admit, she did a pretty good job here. LUV the shoes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

    YUK on the tights.

  • Anonymous

I like it down to the thighs, the tights gave me pause but I ‘grokked’ the “Fashion is my playground” message and was happy.

Until I saw the close up of the shoes. No. The faux snake-skin on the soles push them into tacky-ville, for me.  And they can’t ruin the entire ensemble, but I am no longer so happy.

  • foodycat

Do you guys know something about SJP we don’t? Is she dying? This is the second dubious effort of hers you’ve praised in about 24 hours! I like the coat, but everything else is mutton dressed as lamb.

    • Anonymous

Thank you — I was kind of afraid to ask that.

Yeah, well, her hair looks tired and confused.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I cannot count the numerous times I tried to scroll up and down and tried my best to even appreciate the tights.  I have come to the conclusion that this is an acceptable outfit for Carrie Bradshaw, you know, the TV character.  She was only ever given the title of fashion icon b/c of the show, and let’s not forget, that was Betsey Johnson’s genius. Not hers.

  • Anonymous

    Well, the coat’s not bad….

  • Anonymous

I love the dress, coat and shoes. The tights look stupid, IMHO. And why is she wearing shades if its raining???

  • Anonymous

The tights look turquoise on my monitor rather than teal.  I would have no problem with turquoise tights with a black outfit, but I don’t like them with pale taupe.  Also, somehow these particular tights emphasize how spindly her legs are.

  • Anonymous

Um, a little juvenile?  I had those tights in 1983; I was 3 years old.  Just sayin’…. Still, tights aside, it’s a cute look.

  • Anonymous

How nice to have someone follow you around with an umbrella!

  • http://twitter.com/Cakewalk_Queen Lauren Cooper

I saw this first on tv and thought it looked great on camera.

I like the bright blue with the gray and white, but I think she should have done it in the belt or shoes and not in the tights. Not really digging those shoes with the outfit, either. Too brown for the dress.

    Great dress and coat.

I like bright tights, though. Just bought myself a bright gold pair to wear with a floral dress.

  • Allison Woods

Sorry Uncles, the Smurf Tights make Alli want to throw things, and she’s speaking in the third person, which is never a good sign…..nonononono

This would be a great outfit if it weren’t for those stupid tights.

  • Anonymous

Hate the tights, the rest of the ensemble is fine.

  • Anonymous

Eghads. No for me; 1970s midwest kitchen curtains with 4-year-old-it’s my birthday tights and some killer shoes ruined by adding seatbelts. I like … the coat. That’s it.

  • Anonymous

Fun & chic indeed.  LOVE it and it looked great on camera.  She’s no fool, sitting on those tall stools at the show, she knew her legs would make the statement, a belt would have been awkward and hidden.  See if you can find a screen cap of the interview, she nailed it.

  • Anonymous

Can’t agree with you on this one, TLo.  She’s left kindergarten and is entering Smurfville.

  • Anonymous

The tights ruin the look. What was she thinking? Did she let her daughters pick them out?

  • Anonymous

It’s definitely different – whimsical.  The tights kinda shout “Look at my fabulous legs” don’t they!

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I love it. She looks totally chic and fun and put together.

  • Anonymous

I feel like this really needed a darker dress.  There’s too much contrast between the leg and the dress. And that belt is trying too too hard.  A stupidly long belt like that makes the ensemble trend silly.

  • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

Ick, she ruined the whole look with those hideous tights. Love the coat and dress, though.

I don’t know.  As a woman whose age also begins with ’4′, I think if I was wearing this, as it’s styled, I would feel age inappropriate.  Boy that was hard to say.

I have tights exactly that color, but I hate her shoe choice with them (I usually donly wear mine with boots, so they’re a pop of color at the knee). She looks like she’s wearing the adult-sized version of a child’s outfit.

I would like to point out that this woman is only 5 years younger now than Rue McClanahan was when she started on Golden Girls. I’m not saying it’s necessary for a 46-year-old to dress in dowdy, frumpy clothes, but can we for the love of God stop with the baby-doll dresses at this point? It’s embarrassing.

The shoes, on the other hand, are faaaabulous, and I’m a sucker for robin’s egg blue, so I’m going to give a “Yea” to the tights.

  • http://twitter.com/capt_shiny Mags

A coincidence that American Apparel Hosiery is one of the premier advertisers at TLo and SJP chooses their tights? I think not! She secretly reads this blog and makes her fashion choices based on the opinions of TLo and the Bitter Kittens.

The dress is also tipping a bit juvenile, but I think she looks fun. :-)

I like the idea of the tights (I have ‘em in a rainbow of shades myself), and I LOVE the shoes, which are hot to death, but I can’t help thinking that the colorful tights would’ve looked better in more of a jewel tone than a Crayola tone. Maybe a rich plum? The aqua is just a little too swimming pool tile to go with the sophisticated dove grey of the rest of her ensemble.
