Pairs Division: Mara and Craig

Posted on December 13, 2011

These two look like a barrel of laughs, don’t they?

Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig attend the world premiere of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” in London. Rooney Mara is wearing a Givenchy couture dress.

Givenchy Fall 2011 Couture Collection

SHE: Looks confused. Sweetie? Do you know where you are? We’ll give you a hint: It’s not your wedding. But even if it was her wedding, we probably still wouldn’t like this dress. Conceptually interesting, but awkward from a real-world sense. And it pretty much requires that you wear little to no jewelry with it, which is boring for the red carpet. Especially when you’re trying to grow out some truly shitty bangs and would appreciate some focus-pulling earrings. It’s a bold choice of a dress, but you’re locked into it without any interpreting or styling. That would be great (from our perspective) if the dress was so stunning that it didn’t need anything, but really, the dress ain’t all that stunning. Score 6./10.

HE: Needs a tutorial on formal outerwear, because this thing isn’t it. Daniel, a fabulous trench or overcoat? You couldn’t manage that? Come now. We can’t even see your outfit because of that big fabric body condom you’ve got on. Tsk. At the very least, you could have flashed some bulge for the gay bloggers out there, right? Score: 5/10. For all we know, the suit underneath looks great, but we can’t grade you on our imaginations, now can we, Daniel?

Combined Score: 5;5/10. That seems about right. She tried a bit too hard and he didn’t try hard enough.

The dress is also completely ill-fitted.  It is gaping at her bust and not hitting her hips in the right places.  Terrible choice.  The hair is tragic, but I know that was for the role.  That coat on  him is a total bust.  Fail on both counts. (I also think the dress looks expensive on the model and looks cheap on her. Like I made this on my sewing machine in my basement cheap).

  • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

In the first picture, the dress looks too big on her, which is really distracting.

I’m not a big fan of packages, but if y’all want some bulge, then Danny C. should deliver.

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

I’m disappointed that she didn’t have the tattoo on with that dress. She could have had the makeup artist do at least that much.

    • Anonymous

Exactly. She’s got the hair, so do the tattoo, too.

in my imagination, Mr. Craig get’s an A+ every time. Of course, he’s usually naked in my imagination.

      Scotty,
I liked your earlier comment too which seems to have gone missing.  Hope that was just you deciding not to be naughty…

it’s still hard for me to realize that she’s the cute gal from ‘the social network’.  what did she do?

    • MilaXX

She cut her hair, beached her brows and added a few piercings for the Girl w/ the Dragon Tatoo movie.

  • Anonymous

The sheer dress would have been impractical for the red carpet, but it completely loses its ethereal beauty without it.  I don’t see how it could be worn in the real world.

    • Anonymous

I agree.  All the interest was in the contrast with the bare skin.

      • Anonymous

I second that!.  Also on the model, the pale skin and sheerness all seem to go together better.  The starker contrast with Mara’s skin tone doesn’t work as well (or perhaps it’s just teh lighting).  But the more subtle contrast with the model works better.

    • Anonymous

Totally agree. Now it just looks dowdy and weird. Terrible.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

That dress is AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL, AND it doesn’t fit her. The changes she made from the dress on the model are awful too.  She is so bad in this it is almost offensive. It looks like she pulled a Pretty In Pink and decided to make herself a dress out of her bedsheets this morning.

It’s hard to even judge him since you can’t even see what he’s wearing.  His hem is a bit long, and that’s all I can see, so I would give him a 4.

    Damn, she looks terrible.

    • Anonymous

Oh my gosh the dress is totally reminiscent of the Pretty In Pink prom dress, with the cut-outs at the shoulder! I remember at the big reveal how Blaine was supposed to be utterly won over by her plucky vintage masterpiece and instead I was shocked and horrified on his behalf!

The dress looks fantastic from the back, but from the front it definitely looks like it’s wearing her.

  • Anonymous

She pulls this dress right down to earth, doesn’t she?  And not in a good way.  With that hair & face she could pull off a sharp, sleek dress a la Swinton or Blanchett.

    • oohsparkley!

You’re right.  She should be in something edgy to go with the hair.  Not bridal or ethereal.

  • http://twitter.com/RzYoung RzYoung

Hmm, i think i preferred the dress with the nude lace bits. Also, in Daniel’s defence it was absolutely lashing it down last night, full on storm…- actually why am i defending him she’s wearing practically nothing?!

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Exactly. She’s wearing a BACKLESS LACE DRESS – he couldn’t take off the coat for 10 minutes to get some pictures?

  • Anonymous

He is really disappointing with his sartorial choices lately. Poor Rooney looks like she’s auditioning for the Twilight sequel sure to come (heaven help us), where the half-vampire spawn marries her werewolf. She certainly looks half-dead already.

  • Anonymous

Her dress looks like the table cloth I bought my mother in Bruges while backpacking Europe….

  • http://twitter.com/RBinTexas RBinTexas

He should have been a gentleman and draped that coat around her. Problems solved!

    • Anonymous

So true!  Her unfortunate dress would have been hidden, and we could check him out without the coat.

  • Anonymous

Yes she looks terrible in that dress. it simply is wrong for her body. She’s too short waisted to pull it off correctly

also i agree, Daniel should have wrapped his coat around her and that way the the ill fitting gown would have been cover and the bugle exposed :)

  • BuffaloBarbara

Now, Daniel… when your little girl is dressing for her first day of high school, you should double-check her to make sure that she’s in the right dress, case in point here, and… what’s that?  She’s your date?

Oh.  Well, then, I guess it’s on her head.

I actually don’t mind his coat.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cortney-Dean/100002491593625 Cortney Dean

FYI- She’s his co-star in the movie. Not his date, he’s married to Rachel Weisz .

      • BuffaloBarbara

        Ah. Okay.

      • oohsparkley!

Yeah, but if they follow the book, they “do” it.  And she is supposed to be quite a bit younger than him, but maybe not as much as Craig and Rooney.

  • MilaXX

Her dress is best left as an editorial piece. That shot from the back is almost pretty, but the front is a hot mess both in fit and style. Add to the fact that it’s too cold for an outdoor RC, a fact made all the more evident by Mr. Craig’s attire, and she just looks silly. 5/10
Mr. Craig on the other hand, didn’t get the memo about sacrificing comfort for beauty and put on a coat my dad would wear to go to work. 6/10

    • Anonymous

Agree.  As an editorial piece, the dress works, but as actual clothing, not so much.  And as everyone else has mentioned, it doesn’t fit her properly. Also, for someone with her striking looks–the icy skin, the dark, dark hair in the severe cut–a white dress is just too severe. And surely Daniel has a handler/bodyguard/publicist to whom he could have handed his coat, no?

      No.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

Her – All I see is vulcan with the hair and the eyebrows and make up.
Him – All I see is him in tight swim trunks – it was the first time I ever saw him.  Sigh…

    • Anonymous

      Yes! Vulcan!

      • Anonymous

Yes! Tight swim trunks! Come back…

The poor woman is standing around in a gown, but he can’t take his coat off for 10 minutes?
The least he could have done is put it over her shoulders.

    4/2 = 3.0
She took a risk/His tie is a nice color

    • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

She never would have accepted his coat and he knows that. The point is to get photographed in your borrowed dress. You can’t do that if it’s covered up with a coat.

  • Anonymous

He looks OK. Her dress doesn’t fit.

  • Addicted2Glamour

The fab little details in the dress as seen on the model are completely lost. And the bodice, on her, looks like an expensive, wrinkled lobster bib. Reading “big fabric body condom” made me choke on my coffee from laughing so hard. Thanks.  :-P

Actually, if she’d worn some nice earrings, the dress was better fitted to her, had left it unlined, and learned how to pose, she could have looked very rock n’ roll.

  • Anonymous

A lot of people have already pointed out the lousy fit– +1 on that.  In addition, I don’t mind the hairstyle so much– it’s distinctive, but if you’re going to pull off severe straight bangs, that cut has to be laser precise and it’s just not.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Agreed on the hair, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if she’s just like, “DON’T FUCKING TOUCH IT IT MUST GROW.”

But the bangs actually look cute in the picture where she’s looking over her shoulder. It helps that there’s a guy in the background who is standing in JUST the right place so that he looks like a ponytail.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Oh my god, I thought that was a ponytail. That’s hilarious.

  • Anonymous

I don’t hate the dress and I think her makeup it pretty but her bangs are just too distracting. I know it was for the role but couldn’t she find a way to sweep (plaster?) them off her face?

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

    Too bad about that dress.

  • Anonymous

Also, wearing a filmy dress on what is obviously a cold day makes her and her stylist look like  ridiculous fashion victims.

  • Anonymous

Bizarre dress. On the model it looks like WarriorWaif, which is perfect for the character, but it ain’t working here.

  • http://www.gprotocol.com Advaita Waikar

That dress is very editorial. I think her make up is spot on though.

  • Christina Brennan

The bust of the dress is ill-fitting.  And I think that Craig is wearing a leather coat?  Whatever it is, it’s hiddy.

  • Anonymous

Neither of them presented themselves well on this occasion, but I think the situation speaks volumes about the difference between what’s expected of men and women in our society. Apparently, it was very cold and very rainy. For a man, that meant wearing a warm raincoat. For a woman, it meant no change at all – just show up in your barely-there evening gown and suffer.

    • Anonymous

Hear, hear. Kinda putrid, isn’t it?

  • Anonymous

He looks like he’s still playing the part of Halle Fucking Blomkvist at the premier.
    Still, Daniel Craig… le sigh!

  • http://www.kittenmasks.com/ kittenmasks

It doesn’t fit her right, but I’m loving the back of it.

  • Anonymous

The dress doesn’t work without the sheer skirt, and I really don’t like sheer skirts, so I guess that means I’d dislike the dress no matter what.

I don’t mind her bangs. As they say, “It’s a look.” She certainly has the face for that haircut.

Craig looks like her proud dad posing for a quick picture after her choral performance or something.

  • Judy_J

The runway version of this dress is more interesting.  I’m not normally a fan of the see-thru skirt and bodice, but lining this dress took away the visual interest and turned it into a bad wedding gown.  It doesn’t seem to fit her properly, either.  I do wish Mr. Craig had removed the topcoat so we could see what lies underneath.

  • Anonymous

Congratulations, Mara!  Who’s the lucky guy?  And how nice that Daniel showed up at your wedding.

  • Anonymous

Maybe they look sad because they realize they’re pimping for a movie that is an unnecessary remake and cannot possibly measure up to the excellent original.

  • Anonymous

I love that dress in it’s original version but the white lining ruins it! Why didn’t they put a nude lining in it to keep the contrast! It needs the sheer or at least the illusion of sheer. On top of that it doesn’t fit her.
She isn’t confused, she’s just thinking where’s the nearest heater!

  • http://twitter.com/megelizah Megan Howard

Yikes… he looks like he’s still on set. Her dress definitely looks a million times better in the runway edition. The contrast is what largely makes that dress very stunning and here it just looks like a blob. And it looks too long for her (and by that i mean it makes her look short in an unflattering way). But I still love her face.

  • Anonymous

Also — off topic, but — I don’t see Daniel Craig in the role. I just hate it when movie casting doesn’t match the image I get when I read a book. I’ve been resenting Debbie Reynolds as the voice of Charlotte for 38 years.

  • Anonymous

Ms. Mara appears undecided as to whether she wants to be edgy, thus showing everyone that she can portray a convincing Lisbeth Salander, or traditionally feminine, to show everyone she is nothing like Lisbeth Salander and should not be typecast.

I hate the way the models are posed by Givenchy, and it’s been going on for several seasons by now. The whole look is so flat and dull.

    • Anonymous

Good point. Even the despised Marchesa seems to have given up having the models just stand there and look miserable.

    • Anonymous

See, I like that because you look at the dress and nothing else. How many comments do we see here on collections where people are looking at the model, how thin she is, the make-up, the stying and not even really seeing the clothes.

  • Anonymous

I agree…her dress really ain’t all that, but it is ruined by the wrinkly modesty panel at the bust.  The back is pretty..overall needs to be a different color to steer away from the bridal image.

She’s out there suffering in the cold while he’s all bundled up in his warm coat…wimp!  way to go tough guy.  ;)

  • Anonymous

Once again we have the Red Carpet Gender Paradox. He’s in a suit covered with a parka, and she’s in a gown with a bare midriff and back. Is it necessary to torture our actresses? Either bring them inside for the photocall or put her in some terrific outwear.

Her dress is one of those couture pieces that only looks good on a model standing perfectly still. It is “editorial” as Nina would say.

  • Anonymous

The problem with that entire Givenchy collection is that unless you’re willing to go full Florence Welch and just wear underwear underneath, the whole point of those flimsy, romantic embroidery-filled dresses is lost.

He looks like her dad. Daniel Craig should look like nobody’s dad.

  • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

That is nobody’s dress.  Just awful.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kelsey-Albrecht/100001647200441 Kelsey Albrecht

Even a 6 is way too high for her. She looks like she’s wearing a feminine hygiene product.

    • Anonymous

Funny! I thought napkin as in tablecloth. But now all I can see is a sanitary napkin thanks to your insightful comment

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

For the first time EVARR, I will say that I like the see through version much better. I think that plus the fact that the top really doesn’t fit her well makes it not work at all.

  • vmcdanie

At least she’s wearing it with a lining (the model looks like some tragically beautiful mental patient) but that dress is unattractive and terribly overwrought.

Daniel just looks like an accountant who is off to shovel his driveway. But a hot accountant.

  • http://twitter.com/PsychicMuppet Bitsy Carver

The dress is gorgeous on the model, and I think if it were better fitted on Rooney (and she wore a bra) and if she also pulled her bangs back, she would look great. Those bangs are awful, though I know they were for the movie. Rooney’s got a unique and beautiful face, but you just can’t see it here.

  • Anonymous

whatever the relined or lined the dress with seems really heavy, like cotton and that weighs the dress down.

  • Anonymous

This kind of dress should never be worn unless all you are going to do is stand ALONE and pose. All the design elements like the cutout sides and shaped bodice look awful when you are arm in arm. This dress should have been nixed when the lining was put in since it totally erases the shaping lines that the contrast between the sheer and solid give it.

  • Anonymous

Oh, I’m using my imagination on Daniel Craig, only not to “see” the suit under his jacket….rrrawww….

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

That is the stupidest dress I ever saw. It looks like some sort of bad PR challenge: let’s make a dress out of napkins! The model version is ridiculous and the changes they made to make it wearable don’t help a bit. Couture my ass. It’s a mess.

  • Anonymous

Daniel, your costar is clearly willing to freeze for fashion, you couldn’t take that coat off while you walked the red carpet?

  • Anonymous

That dress is kinda fug, but even so, I think most of us here would be able to at least manage a smile if we were wearing Givenchy couture and standing next to Mr. Blue Eyes over there. Those are some really awful bangs too. Damn, girl. Get shit together!

Can’t even comment on his outfit because I can’t see it.

  • Anonymous

I can’t score them. It looks like wedding pictures taken by an amateur photographer at an inexpertly arranged wedding. (Her first unless there was a teenage mistake, either his first & he’s already regretting it or his third).

A good wedding photographer or even an energetic maid of honor would have made that dress look a LOT better. Might have even gotten the groom to take off his coat.

  • Anonymous

Givenchy Couture Collection dresses only look good on a runway. I have rarely seen any Givenchy Couture Collection dresses work anywhere but on a runway. The exception maybe Givenchy Couture Collection dresses on Florence Welch.

  • Anonymous

At least Mr. Craig looks nice.

  • Mariah J

That dress is so gorgeous but it only works when it fits you like a glove…wrumpled mess. Daniel…meh

  • glennethph

At least, the bangs are growing out.  It was so heinous when she first unveiled it…I wonder if she got depressed because of it (ala Javier Bardem and the Wig of Doom).

  • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

The sad thing about the dress is that the obligatory slip for the red-carpet takes away half of the visual interest, namely the details on the bottom half.. And turns it into a blah white dress with some cut-outs. Dull.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

Ugh, freaky white wedding gown with vulcan haircut!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I have nothing nice to say about that dress.  I feel its more like a -3/10.

What is up with Danny boy. He used to make my heart go flip flop but now just does not look well at well…very gaunt. That coat looks like the Londson Fog version that Dick Van Dyke would wear on his show.

Poor Mara. Please find a gay who can cut straight bangs. Is that an “ass zipper” on the dress. Did those wacky people on Project Runway finally start a new trend.

    • Anonymous

Thank goodness someone else mentioned this.  I was thinking the same thing, is he not well?

  • Anonymous

That gown looks like something a Russian Stripper would wear to her wedding.  Yikes!!!

  • Anonymous

if the dress was fit better- it seems to be too big in the torso and hips- and with a skin-toned lining to show the sheer details, i would love this look.  there is something very dramatic about her dark mysterious looks next to the etherial whiteness of the gown.  and what a fine booty!

  • Jillian N

If SHE doesn’t get to wear a coat, why should HE? That dress is way colder than even just a suit. No excuse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jmarrazzo Joe Marrazzo

Oh wow, are you being kind to her.  A 6?!?!  Wearing that hot mess?  Guys, there’s being charitable and then there is being blind.  He just does it for me, wholesale.  Just sexy X 1000 and he can wear whatever he wants because I said so.

  • Anonymous

“Girl, that is NOT your dress.  At all.”  And the fit is just god awful.  That coat is just ugly and leaves his face just floating above a sea of black fug.  Not that it is a bad face to look at but…dare I say it?  He looks a little TOO beat up and weathered here for me.

  • Anonymous

Wow. We are SO talking about two different people! I love the dress, I love it WITH the crappy bangs, I think she looks like an otherworldly angel and I love love love the way the bodice attaches to that skirt. AND that she nix’d the sheer on the bottom. Him, eh, whatever. But she gets a 9 from me only ’cause the sleeves should’ve been completely dismissed. They’re not needed.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like this dress at all. What surprises me is that every time I see her, she looks so different. If you hadn’t put her name on the entry, I would’ve had a really hard time trying to guess who she is, and I’m fantastic with faces! I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing for an actor, but so far, I find it fascinating.

when you line the dress you wreck it. goes from high cloud dwelling angelslut [& i dont mean charlies]  straight down to class climbing low rent wedding. if you cant bear the cold get out of the freezer, i guess, & move it along to somewhere where underslips are required.

do like the bangs though, the makeup, the rest of it. but the one who is really approaching the mark whereupon tilda swinton often fashionably stands is noomi rapace. & she wore a dreadful dress recently too. only, i think, more consciously.

    edited to add:
ps. the abovenoted punctuation is kinda sorta screwy–something which i think can easily be blamed on disqus & its habit of having momentary, if repeated, crises–anyway, cos of that i thought you gave her a .6 not a 6. that might not have been fair either, but closer to the mark for just the dress itself in its current fehncarnation.
