Pairs Division: Downey and Law

Posted on December 09, 2011

Talk about your study in opposites.  This one won’t take more than 30 seconds to score. Time us.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law attend the “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” European Premiere.

Downey: Sloppy man-child. Score: 4/10.

Law: Fabulously stylish movie star. Score: 9/10. The hat’s just a little on the douchey side, but we love everything else he’s got going on.

Combined score: 6.5/10. Jude, you have our sympathies.

      whaaaat? they both look awful.

      • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

Racing stripes on a pair of shiny, skinny suit pants should be a hanging offense.

      • Christina Brennan

Agreed.  They both look like giant juiceboxes.

        • Lori

I feel like between the two of them they have one good look.

          • Anonymous

Yeah, but I’d love to be between the two of them!

            • drdarke

              Me, too, @fashionablylate:disqus – and I’m a middle-aged straight married man!

As I get older, I find more guys I’d go gay for – I’m not sure if that’s progress or desperation….

Grey track pants and a blue blazer? Really?

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

You guys are grading with something other than your eyes this time. Is there a whole person somewhere from whom they’ve taken and subdivided his clothes?

    • Anonymous

Really?  Jude was the one who made me think “douche” as soon as I saw the pants.  They’re like half skinny slacks, half track pants.

      • Anonymous

        100%

    • Anonymous

Oh, gosh, as much as I’m not a fan of RD Jr’s sneakers or his light tie/blackshirt combo, I think that slightly edges out JL’s beret & racing stripe.

Now, if we’re just talking them, attire aside (!), then I’ll take one of each.

    • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

Come to me, sloppy man child! Let me straighten your tie!

    • Anonymous

Hmm…I’m feel more and less generous than you are T Lo.

I’d up Downey’s score because I like his suit. I don’t like the shoes, shirt or tie, but he still manages to look decent in this. So, I’d up him to 5.

I’d knock Law down for the hat, and I’m not loving the blue jacket with the black. I know that combo can work, but I don’t think it is working here.  The pants are cool and they work with the vest, but not with the sport coat. I’d knock him down to a 7.5.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

You crazy TLo! Is Jude wearing track pants? Aren’t both of their pants on the tight side (not that I’m really minding, but…)? I give them both a 4 out of 10. Sometimes a little effort is worse than none.

    • http://profiles.google.com/laurenjeanstm Lauren St Martin

Are you sure you have the names right on your scores? Because as awful as Downey looks, Law looks positively blind. Pants, suit coat, hat, beard, it all just screams blind homeless man let loose in rich guys closet.

    • http://twitter.com/pocketcarnival Penny Eager

Haha surely Downey’s been taking a few too many fashion notes from the Biebs, but I don’t think he’s quite that bad – at least he’s in a suit!

    • Anonymous

I am still laughing.  Before I even looked at your comments I said, out loud – to myself, “Robert Downey Jr. looks happy and fun; Jude Law looks like a douche bag.”

      • Anonymous

Totally agree with your comments, but I must admit I always think Jude Law looks like a douche bag.

        • Anonymous

Maybe because he is a douche bag.

      • Anonymous

I thought the same thing, until I noticed how blindingly shiny RDJ’s suit is. I thought, there’s no way TLo approve of that…so then that means…they like Jude’s look?? What have they been smoking?

    • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

      They both look tragic.

    • Anonymous

I don’t know that I agree with you on Jude.  I don’t really like the pants with that jacket. The stripe is throwing me off.  And I don’t mind navy with black, but navy with black with charcoal and…whatever color that stripe is isn’t working for me here.  I also hate the hat.  Fine with jeans and a sweater, probably, but not a suit.

Robert…I so love him.  He looks crazy, but at least it fits with his image.  Clown-y type of guy.  Not saying it looks good, but it does fit his image.

    • Anonymous

      ummm… really?!?

they both look like equally tragic douchnozzles. jude’s pants are somehow too tight AND too baggy (a seriously odd combo) and he’s literally wearing 5 different colors, none of which look well together. the hat is just the juvenile cherry on a very tragic cake. sorry, they’re both underdressed and poorly put together, especially for a movie premiere.

    • Anonymous

You like the stripes on Jude Law’s trousers??  Our road has hit a fork…

Oooh, you might be right!  I was about to posit the old crack pipe, but lust is a stronger drug than crack, after all.

Not that I’d blame them, though my lust is pretty equally divided here.  Still, I’d put them both as looking kinda horrible/mmm-fabulous here.  Whatever the male fashion equivalent of “jolie-laide” is!

        • scottyf

          MIGHT be right?

These boys have a Huge  Middle-Aged  Tiger Beat Crush. Mr. Law was their first Man On The Street post

          • Sara__B

Thanks for the links, especially the Bieber commercial. I’m still smiling at both the commercial and the idea of T Lo squealing.

          • Anonymous

LOL!  Okay, okay, forget the “MIGHT.”  Now when I reread that first MOTS where they called Droopy Drawers “chic,” I’m hearing it as a squeal:  “He’s CHIIIIIIC!!!”  Oh, dear, once you get something in your head….

I’ll give ya Downey. But Law? Douchbag hat, dweeby too-tight pants that don’t go with the jacket (or anything else he’s sporting): 4/10 same as Downey and only because it’s Friday.

    • http://twitter.com/1carmelita 1carmelita

Jude Law’s hat is awful. And I don’t understand the tight stripey pants. He just needs to take those off—now. :-)

      • Anonymous

He’d look much better without the pants :-)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LJAFNCSWWSA6MOS56GBAFQB7PU kitkats75

From the way they’re standing, they seem to not even like each other. I’m behind on the celeb gossip – anyone know what’s going on with these two? Love Jude’s outfit (minus the hat).

      • Anonymous

Everything I’ve read (and its not much since I don’t search out that stuff) is that they quite adore each other. It seems to happen with all the actors who play Holmes and Watson.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I thought RDJ’s production company did Sherlock Holmes, so I’d imagine he’d have some say in who is cast opposite him.  And they’re both supposed to be fairly good to work with — you have to be, to get that many second chances.

    • Anonymous

Robert looks like he’s stuck in the 90’s, and really man-child…it’s time to grow up and stop with the sneakers paired with a suit.  What’s up with his fly?

Jude…not digging the cap although I know it’s kind of a style thing happening now, and really don’t like his pants either.  He’s got the image and build to be able to pull them off though, and he does look well put together, rather hip and modern…especially for a guy his age.  I like the vest, jacket, white shirt and pocket square combo.

    • Anonymous

Ha Ha … I love them together!

    • Joanna Schuth

Or… not. Both get a 3, max. Those pants on Jude? Please and a half. Ick.

    • Anonymous

law looks like he has to leave right after to go groom the horses. i would have flipped the scores.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B53PQYXSJR4YJBV3J6BWYSICRQ Jamie

sorry have to disagree – RDjr – totally hot
      JL – track pants

    • Rebecca Johnson

What?! I agree with you on Downey, but Jude Law is wearing skinny track pants and none of his colors match. Look at the second from the bottom photo – all those dark shades and none are the same. Makes my eye twitch. Max score is 5/10, on the strength of his beard and starched collar.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Could you explain your reasoning here?  ‘Cause I’m seeing RDJ in a suit, though an oddly shiny one, with his accessories skewing decidedly casual, and Jude Law in an outfit that defies comprehension: douchey hat, weird wrinkly pants that don’t at all match or coordinated with the navy blue vest/jacket combo.  I just don’t get the scoring, and what makes Law’s look good while RDJ’s is bad.  To me they both look a tad silly, but RDJ looks silly in the way he has since 1985, so it’s not terribly worthy of such low scoring.

    • Anonymous

Really? 9/10 for Jude? Those pants are terrible on their own but they ruin that lovely jacket. and the hat is more than a little douchey. They both look fairly terrible, in this kitten’s opinion.

    • Anonymous

Hmmmm. I disagree. I just don’t like Jude’s pants at all, they look too casual.

He should take them off. :)

    • Ms. Schmidt

Fashion-wise, Law may have it.  Looks-wise, give me Downey any damn day of the week.

    • angela rose

heterosexual men don’t know how to be photographed together.  that should deduct a few points from the total.

    • Anonymous

Those ersatz tuxedo pants on Mr. Law need a good pressing and better fitting, but I think they look silly when paired with casual everything-else.  His grooming is very tidy, and he’s easy on the eyes.  Mr. Downey looks supremely jerky.  Doubt he cares, but he needn’t inflict his sartorial insolence on our optics.

    • http://www.facebook.com/robinmortonmurray Robin Morton Murray

I almost never totally disagree with you two awesome boys, but here I will. RDJ is a fashion institution, like Helena Bonham Carter. Yes, he’s a mess — but he’s his own mess. He makes sartorial train wrecks cuddly and lovable. Jude Law looks like a middle aged French architect attempting to hide his receding hairline.

    • Anonymous

Whaaa?  I think I need to go home for the weekend.  I have no idea what’s going on here, either in the photographs, or in TLo’s scoring.

    • Anonymous

Downey’s shoes and Law’s hat is the tipping point for me.  They both look sloppy.  Doable, but sloppy.

    • Kimberly Cooperrider

Are you serious? Jude Law’s outfit is ridiculous! I must not understand men’s fashion….

    • Jasmine Moten

How about they both strip, and there will be no problem with their outfits.

      • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

I’ve seen Jude’s…assets, and they are limited at BEST. Definitely keep the clothes, douchey as they are, on.

    • Terence Ng

I think they both look adorable, and a study of douchey inverses. Law has great formal threads with a douchey hat, while Downey has douchey threads, but an overall formal look.

    • Anonymous

what?!  Jude Law with a douchey hat, a navy jacket, a black vest, and unmatched tuxedo pants?  That’s *stylish*?!!

    • Stefanos Mantyla

Not a fan of that stripe down the side of his pants, but otherwise well done.

    • Anonymous

See, I love RDJ so much that I’m willing to overlook his getup to give him a 10.

Jude Law is a little douchey and that hat doesn’t help. I dislike him enough to give him a 4. I hate those striped pants. He looks like he’s wearing a track suit with a sport coat.

    • Sobaika Mirza

That hat is so bad. Embrace the balding, Jude.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AYQCICXEN2CCDBFV5HED4Z2RUA Dee B

I consider the hat a stylish way to hide his thinning hairline.  Jude hasn’t looked that sexy in years.

    • MilaXX

I prefer Jude’s look as well but a 9 seem a bit high for what Jude is wearing. I’d give Downey a 5 because his look would be passable if he was wearing shoes and Jude gets an 8 for his semi hipster look.
      6.5/10

    • Stefanos Mantyla

Not a fan of the stripe down the side of his pants, but otherwise well done for Law.

Glad we share the same distaste for this “man-child” business (and thanks to you we have a name for it). How can guys dressing like this think they look good? Downey looks marginally better than those guys who brought us that horrific “Rain Over Me” song and video. At least the pants on this guy fit better (key word here) than on those two doofuses.

    • Anonymous

Seriously? The stripe on the pants? Ugh.
That plus the hat = no more than 7/10.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

Yeah, cocktail hour must have come early today.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

if you’re over the age of 18 you are no longer permitted to wear sneakers with your suits.  good lord.

    • Anonymous

      what in the sam hill?!

    • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

Seriously, wtf?  Jude does NOT merit that high a score.  He looks like he got mugged by a homeless person and was forced to swap some clothes with them.  Robert, good grief, it’s not like you can’t rock a proper look, man!

    • http://wineandwhiskeygirl.blogspot.com Amanda Semrick

Well, this clearly proves that I have no fashion sense if Jude Law gets a 9/10 with those pants.

      And that hat.

      And the racing stripe.

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

Okay, so what do you really think? That was good for a laugh. Law is just ridiculous, and the hat inexcusable. Downey looks like Downey, which I rather like. Neither one’s really a winner on the fashion front though.

    • Anonymous

Is it just me, or do RDJ’s shoes look like the kind that are actually high heels hidden in sneakers (or Timberlands in Tom Cruise’s case)?

    • http://www.facebook.com/kellyann.reese KellyAnn Reese

I think the attitude is what boosts Downey past a 6.

    • Anonymous

I’m fine with Jude’s hat. It’s his pants (and cheating) I can’t stand. Really, RDJ? You really can’t stand to fully grow up? You’ve got a baby on the way. You don’t get to be the child any more. Buck up or there’ll be a relapse headed your way for sure.

      Hmm. I’m particularly bitter today.

      • Anonymous

Really?  You can’t stand Jude’s past mistakes, but you are okay with Robert being a druggy and jailbird?  Hmmm.
Anyway, don’t like the pants.  As for the hat, he’s been wearing them everywhere lately because he has a hairstyle for the Anna Karenina film he’s currently working on (which is what the beard’s for, too).  So why we’re nitpicking his beard or hat, it’s all in a day’s million-dollar-paycheck for him.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Yeah, personally I don’t care that he cheated — ’cause he didn’t cheat on me.   The only reason I care about RDJ’s drug problems in the past is because I feel bad for him.  Addiction sucks.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Jude’s outfit is way too mismatched for me.

    • Anonymous

What?  Did you guys have an early cocktail or something?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

Yeah, I was prepared for the exact opposite score! I think Downey looks casual chic while Law looks like a hot mess (a satin stripe tuxedo pant and a knit hat? WTF?).

        • Anonymous

          ^^^what she said…

    • Miranda Neville

WTF? RD at least looks cute from the neck up (when does he not?) but Jude? Oh dear.

    • Sara__B

T Lo, I don’t understand your infatuation with Jude Law. Four pictures with the exact same expression, as if he’s posing for a statue. The man-child at least looks alive, and he’s not wearing a douche-y hat. I’m with mountainFashionista — I have no idea what’s going on here, either in the photographs, or in your scoring.

    • Anonymous

sorry, Jude looks like he got dressed in the dark and pulled out the wrong jacket.  (on top of the trackpant stripe trousers) no go for either

    • Anonymous

Disagree. This is a double “What is this fuggery??” for me.

    • Anonymous

I disagree with almost everything you said for probably the first time ever. I think everything Jude Law is wearing is mismatched, although I do agree that the hat is douchey. Navy blue jacket, black pants, gray stripe, sweater vest and then that hat? Oh hells no.  He looks like an idiot. At least Downey Jr. looks put together properly, although a bit shiny and those sneakers have got to go.

    • Anonymous

See, I actually like RDJ’s look, at least when he keeps his jacket button done, whereas Jude Law’s pants kill me a little, inside. If he put on less douchey trousers I could probably get behind the rest of his look, though.

    • https://manhandslizzie.wordpress.com/ Man Hands Lizzie

It’s the ‘man-child’ for me. The shiny suit and the sneakers fit his personality really well.

I don’t get what’s stylish about a navy blue jacket paired with a gray striped pant.  Plus, the hat makes makes his head look big. Why, TLO, WHY???

    • Anonymous

that hat is stupid. and Jude is wearing track jeans. wtf is that

    • Leslie Streeter

Jude looks like Jamiroquai. No, please.

      • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Now you’ve gone and made me miss Jamiroquai. Time to dig up an old CD!

    • Anonymous

My take is exactly 180 degrees from you guys. RDJ looks like a movie star who’s so big he can get kinda casual and fun with the whole thing. Jude Law looks like either he dressed in the dark, or he’s a tool who takes his artsy self waaay too seriously.

      • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

Exactly- i love RDJ’s suit and the shoes are a cute, casual touch (maybe that’s the hip hop in me talking, but I’ll ride that). Whereas Jude looks like his top half, bottom half, and head came from separate stores (head- the essential oils/free trade knits shop on Hipster Ave, top half- Zara, bottom half- Adidas) – all ugly as fck to me.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

RDJ has been doing the suit and sneaker thing since the 80’s.  He only wears dress shoes for the very most formal events — usually the Oscars merits dress shoes.  I always wonder if there’s a reason (like my husband, who only wears them to work if he has a big meeting, because they aggravate his gout) or if he just really doesn’t like them.

    • Anonymous

They both look like assholes. At least Downey Jr. looks like he might be good for a laugh.

    • Anonymous

RDJr gets a 2 for those ridiculous lifts  (first Bieber’s, now Robert, is this a new trend?).  Jude is simply delicious.  it i’s hard for me to separate the man from the wardrobe.  But if I must, the wardrobe gets a 6.  It needs good editing.  Losing one piece of clothing would bump it to a 9.

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Wait…are dear TLo pulling our Bitter Kitten tails?

    • Judy_J

Say what you will about RJD…he’s owning that look!  I like what he’s wearing much better than what Jude Law is sporting.  I hate those track pants, and that douche-baggy hat has got to go.  I give RJD a 6/10; Jude gets a 3/10 from me.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Really? I actually think Downey looks ok, though his tie needs tightening and his pants need hemming. But Law? He looks, as you said, douchey with the hat and those look like running pants with that light stripe down the side… Not a fan of his look at all.

He was on his way back from a massage when he got the call for an ‘emergency press call” STAT?? some poor asst loaned him his suit jacket? it MUST be friday and MUST be cocktail time at Casa De T’lo…. I don’t see anything here over a combined ranking of a ‘4’

    • http://democracydiva.com/ Democracy Diva

TLo, either you have big old crush on Jude Law, or you’re smoking some crack you stole from the Project Runway judges, because he looks RIDICULOUS. The hat alone is worth more than half a point of douchiness. And a greenish-gray racing stripe on a charcoal pant with a navy jacket, black vest, and white shirt? I can’t support that.

The hat’s not the only douchey part of that outfit. You kids lack consistency. You just got done hating on someone with striped Star Trek pants, and now you love them? No issue with Downey rating, but Law’s entire look screams Toolbag. 2/10. Two points for managing to fit his jacket well.

    • Anonymous

WHAT WHAT WHAT?  TLo, I give this post a 2. You only got any points because you were quick and to the point, even though it was an insanely wrong point.

(Jude should get no better than a 4 for that monstrosity.)

    • Anonymous

      Jude Law is ageing beautifully.

    • Anonymous

Were you guys only viewing them from the waist up?  Because those pants fit Jude like a dream, but obviously Anya came and attacked him with a tacked-on side stripe.

He’s all hot in the middle, and SUPER DOUCHE up top and down bottom.   All he needs are Robert’s shoes to complete the horror.

    • Anonymous

TLo, are you baiting us? Or just pulling a fast one to see if your minions are paying attention?

Jude Law looks pathetic! None of the pieces remotely match in color or style. The collar is starched, but that’s about the only thing that’s working in that lame get-up.

Robert Downey Jr has his own style and should be graded on those terms. If you give allowances for Russell Brand, why don’t RDJ?  At least his outfit is a coordinated ensemble, unless his unfortunate co-star.

      Jude: 2/10
      Robert: 6/10
      TLO: 1/10 (tough love, dearests)

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

Don’t get the 9 for Mr. Law. Usually I can see it even if I don’t agree, but Jude Law’s racing stripe pants and non-matching jacket/vest/pants combo is beyond irritating. I bet his socks match neither the vest, nor the jacket, nor the pants. I am not suggesting style means everything be dyed to match, but the pieces should complement each other somehow. This isn’t stylish–it’s pretend-stylish.

      NINE POINTS?!?

First – you guys SLAMMED K.Lutz for a douche-y hat like that (and he wasn’t even on a red carpet).
Second – Navy Blue jacket with black pants.
And Third – I swear I just donated that pair of Under Armour warm-up pants this afternoon.

you like that? even i dont like that. not that i dont hate everything, which is true, but i do usually give points for someone doing something interesting. which this tilts at & fails pretty much entirely.

i thought you were gonna score it the other way round, even though sneakers & suits shouldve gone aways away w/ woody allen the first time, i dunno, a million years ago, pre-pleistocene when i didnt really have much of an idea of what a red carpet was, if any. once was a statement, ten million billion zillion times even done by this guy’s father’s kid–oh, enough already. at least make em pink. or something.

Thank you, Commentariat, I was questioning my sanity.

Uh oh. Someone was in the eggnogg early today!
RDJ gets a 9 but only ’cause of the shoes; as for what he’s wearing, I only see him naked anyway. Jude? Minus 5 for the hat, minus five for the facial hair and minus 5 for those pants. Grand total: 9. ‘Cause it’s RDJ.

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

hahahaha, literally starting laughing when i saw downey in those shoes hahaha. thats all i have to say

    • Anna Tree

That hat is worth AT LEAST 3 points off. It is totally douche-lord.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Ok, you guys have to a bit nicer to Jude.  You can’t fault a man who is FREAKIN BALDING BEFORE 60 for wanting to wear a hat.  So I’m not bothered by it.  He looks very nice.  RDJ?  I’m always surprised he’s hasn’t gone the Japanese school boy route, complete with shorts and knee socks.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Virtually all bald men start going bald long before 60.  And men who try to hide their balding via hats (or toupees, or plugs) just look like it’s a problem because they’re self-conscious about it.

    • Anonymous

Oh, no I can’t agree on this one.  RDJ just looks like his usual self, I’d give him about a 7.5 just ’cause I don’t like shiny suits.  Jude Law, however – I like the jacket, but can’t stand the hat or the mis-matching F-Troup pants.   He gets a 4.  And don’t ask me to average that out because it’s too late on a Friday evening after a long, long week.

      • Anonymous

Ha ha! F-Troop! Can’t remember the last time I thought about that show. Forrest Tucker & Larry Storch! And that younger guy, can’t remember the name. And whoever played The Girl had just about the epitome of the archetype of the role of The Girl in a 60’s sitcom.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sleepneeded Greg Polansky

Downey may be sloppy, but his look has a certain youthful style. Law, just looks horrid. He needs to do something with his hair – like wash it. Cut it. Then shave the beard. Get different pants. I would give him a 2

    • Anonymous

Surely Law is wearing cheap track suit pants. Because they look like cheap track suit pants. And his hat is just stupid.

    • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

These are pictures of two very attractive men who are dressed HORRIBLY … there is no love in my heart for either look, but in my opinion Robert looks slightly better than Jude.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

At least Robert’s look is a LOOK- it has some consistent planning, even if it doesn’t quite come off, which is mostly a matter of bad fit. Jude looks grossly mismatched and sloppy.

        • Anonymous

very true – I just don’t like the sneakers or the shininess of the suit, but RDJ deserves a much higher score and JL needs a significantly lower one.

If we were just grading on FACE – I’d give them both 9/10 :)

    • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

My first time visiting here, and right away I’m struck by the incomprehensible fascination with any and all derivatives of the word “douche.”  I feel like a middle school teacher walking past the lockers at afternoon break.
Jude looks fine from the waist up.  I’m not loving the pants at all, and I do question that choice.  The hat and beard can be blamed on the fact that he’s currently filming Anna Karenina, not because he’s balding, which he has been for years and he’s lived with it quite nicely, occasionally using a small piece in the front…if he wanted, he could wear a piece or two all the time. Men can’t help when that happens, and I appreciate that he doesn’t spray it like Travolta.  He carries a very grownup, accepting attitude of his aging, and that’s sexy.  Anyway, his hairstyle for the film is 19th century, and he’s been hiding it since the filming started in late October, after he finished his successful stage play Anna Christie.  Anyway, love Jude, I’ve actually met him and he’s a very nice, lovely man.
Robert looks okay in theory, but I don’t like the shine on his suit and the shoes are laughable.  Embrace your height, Robert, it’s all good.  Also, although I find him lively and funny for a while, it does start to grate a bit, and a little goes a long way.

      • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea Jody Lee

That’s interesting.  It may be the first time Vronsky will be played by a man with a receding hairline, just like in the book.

    • Anonymous

      Yes, the pants definitely.

    • Anonymous

Nope, RDJ is wearing a suit. Can’t tell if it fits because his poses are so goofy, and it’s shiny, but at least it matches. I know you guys hate the shoes. But I’d give him a 7/10.
Jude is a wash of too-close-but-not-matching dark colors, those pants are hideous, and the hat is a lot on the douchey side. 4/10. (Points for being hot and a nicely stiff collar sans tie.)
5.5, but bonus for looking like they’re actually having fun… I’ll give them a combined 6/10.

    • Anonymous

Actually, he doesn’t care…or at least, that’s not the reason he’s wearing the hat.  He’s wearing it because he’s got an unusual hairstyle for the film he’s doing.  He’s been wearing them every time he goes out since he started filming Anna Karenina in October.  Just an FYI because I read it recently.

I give them points for looking like they’re having fun, realizing that attending a movie premiere is not right up there with solving the Euro crisis, and asserting some individuality.  However……..they both look just plain odd and I can’t find a reason, other than perhaps an attack of the male version of PMS, why you gave Law such high marks.  They each deserve a 5 at most.  Neither one is an exemplar of anything resembling sartorial style.

Poor TLo, you are clearly overworked.  Take off to somewhere fun this weekend!  Relax!  Indulge!  And come back on Monday with your perspective restored.  Love you!  MWAH!

    • Anonymous

Downey: Those shoes look stupid.  The waistband is too tight, which is making the top of the fly do weird things.  Other than that, inoffensive.  It’s Downey, what’d you expect?

Law:  I like the attempt, but it fell short.  I can live with the stripe, but if your pants make your calves look smaller than your bicep, you need to reassess.

    • Anonymous

Revers the scores and you have what I think.  Although I have to take points off of Jude Law for being Jude Law.

RDJ is forever a 10 for dressing like Tony Stark at all times in real life. And Tony Stark never gets anything but our love, even when he’s being a douchenozzle and we want to throttle him like that one amazing scene in the Thor run where Thor essentially chokes the shit out of him after beating the shit out of him and calls him on all of his douchey ways.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Well, RDJ IS Tony Stark — there wasn’t a lot of acting involved there.

    • Anonymous

really, TLo?! A 9? I think Jude Law looks ridiculous and beyond douchey. Those pants and that stupid hat. I don’t even… As for RDJr, I hate the black shirt/white tie combo and the sneakers but the suit isn’t that bad.

    • Anonymous

      Juuuuuuude. Swoon

    • Anonymous

      Hmmm, not entirely agreeing either.

I don’t mind RDJ’s look. Yes, he looks like a 80s pop singer and could slot into Duran Duran quite easily in that, but it’s him and it all goes and that’s better than he sometimes manages.

Jude? I wouldn’t mind it all with a different jacket, but he looks like he forgot/spilled something on the one he intended to wear and had to do a last minute switch. If the hat’s there to cover a haircut for a role then so be it.

They both look dressed for their own styles and personalities, which is trickier for men than women (in theory) and they have made some effort and put some thought in. Switch Jude’s jacket and I’m happy. Plus they do look like they’re having a laugh – allthough I wouldn’t be surprised if both of them have little crosshair targets on their corneas that flash up over every female in a 20 metre radius!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=522872342 Lisa Mitchell Utter

I think they should both undress immediately.  And let me dress them.  Or not.

    • Anonymous

Oh, TLo… You know how you’re always telling us not to let our emotions get in the way of our bitchery?  In fact, you usually deliver that stern lecture whenever RDJ appears.  But here’s a guy in Civil War pants (I believe that’s the Union Army version), a jacket that does not go with the pants at all, and a douchey hat, and you give him a 9–because he’s standing next to RDJ?

Just goes to show you’re as human as the rest of us.  :)

After my first glimpse of these getups yesterday, I was waiting for you to cover these guys (and Noomi)! The looks of these two do nothing for me but scream, “We will wear anything it takes to distract you and ourselves from the unfortunate predicament we find ourselves in. It’s called Aging in Hollywood.” As someone who is Aging Elsewhere, I can assure you it’s not working. I’m all for a modern, slim-cut suit but these shiny garments are not attractive or flattering on these otherwise handsome guys.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

If so, that’s ludicrous.  Because RDJ gets hotter every time I see him, and Jude is so much more appealing without the unnatural smoothness paired with the insane prettiness he had in his youth.  The aging looks good on him.

        • Anonymous

I agree that Law is aging very, very well. He used to be too pretty. Useful for playing serial killers, but otherwise not to my taste in men, even actors.

Downey isn’t so much better looking, as growing into a more mature version of his youthful good looks, in my book. But he still irritates me irrationally. He gives off a vibe of “I am a black hole of need for attention” even more so than the average actor.

ETA: Hmm, given my phrasing you’d think I had some hatred of actors. Au contraire. Just an impatience with [most] actors whom I’ve actually known in real life.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I have been in love with RDJ since I was 5.  I imagine it will continue until one of us is dead…. So I admit to an irrational bias in his favor at all times.

    • http://twitter.com/anibellee Lynsey M.

Wow, I was expecting Robert Downey, Jr. to get pretty good except for the shoes and Jude Law to get called out for the ridiculous hat and traxedo pants.  I’m really confused about what you guys like about Jude Law’s look.

    • Anonymous

Unlike some, I can get behind a tuxedo stripe on a non-tuxedo pair of pants. But I like the stripe to be narrower in proportion to the width of the pant leg than it is here. And I’m not convinced the color combo really works, though there’s so much room for error in navy/black on a computer monitor, I’ve gotta give the benefit of the doubt.

The beret is douchey, sorry. Flat out. Unless they’re outside in the cold.

All in all, I’d upgrade Mr. Downey a tad & downgrade Mr. Law more than a tad. Though he’s wearing nice shoes, I’ll admit freely, and he seems to have the *concept* of a slightly stylish/mildly irreverent take on red carpet wear down, unlike Mr. Downey.

Downey: 5/10. It’d be 6/10 but he irritates me deeply.
Law: 7/10. And that might be generous.

6/10, combined score. Gentlemen, you can do better & I, personally think you owe it to us, we who buy the tickets to your various movies.

    • http://twitter.com/pag_baj Paige Boerman

TLo, I don’t think you’re grading on their clothes this time. Jude is coming off a bit douche-y and uptight. And RDJ looks fine – it’s sort of his look, so it doesn’t bug me.

    • Anonymous

9 is very generous IMO. I dock points, and give him 5, and I’m being generous at that. The tuxedo stripe ruins the pants and the cap for a premiere wasn’t the smartest choice. Plus something about this outfit just doesn’t do it for me, definitely not fab.  Downey I give 6, they should switch shoes. The sneakers totally ruin the suit, while they might top off Law’s insane, not in a good way, look, and Law’s shoes would look better on Downey. Both are lackluster here. A miss for both, but more of a miss for Law.

    • Lisa

        Exactly what I was thinking.

Jude Law looks like he rolled out of bed after a bender and picked up whatever was on the floor.

RDJ, on the other hand, looks hella sharp (though those pants need hemming). I’ll take two, please.

        • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

It’s crazy to us that anyone would think RDJ, in his ill-fitting, wrinkled shiny suit, crooked tie and sneakers is “sharp as hell,” while Jude Law, in an outfit that, no matter what else you might think of the style, is pressed and fitted correctly “picked up whatever was on the floor.”

          • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

while i think robert downey jr. doesn’t look as put together as he could/should, i would have given him maybe a 5 or a 6.  there are some fit issues and the shoes are silly, but the whole look is more or less along his usual style.

TLo, as always, you give me something to ponder.  I look to you to teach me your ways.  I think I “get” Law’s outfit, head-on.  It’s the side shot that’s tricky, the stripe isn’t the same color value as the rest of the ensemble.  But as always, I defer to the two sharpest men in Philly on this one:)

    • Nicole Merrill

Yes but Law has those ridiculous stripes running down the sides of his pants and I can’t abide by them.

    • aimee_parrott

I’m sorry.  I must have just had a minor stroke or something, because I *thought* that I just saw TLo give 9/10 to someone wearing a navy jacket with black, shiny, skinny pants with a racing stripe down the side and a douche-cap on his head.  CLEARLY I must get to a doctor.

I’m joining with many people here and saying RDJ looks pretty decent for him (and as someone else has said, I think he belongs in the Helena Bonham Carter/Alan Cumming “I dress how I like and I don’t care what you think”) while I cannot comprehend Jude Law’s outfit at all. The jacket has nothing to do with the pants, the pants are some insane track pant with a giant stripe down the side and he’s wearing a godawful hat. Whatever you gentlemen were smoking/drinking, just back away slowly and promise never to take it again.

    • Charles Purdy

That hat is waaaaay beyond “a little bit” douche-y. Jude’s pants are just from a different look than the jacket — it’s not just the color but the cut and the racing stripe…. I think they both look like hell, and they look pissed about it.

God, I HATE that hate Jude is wearing.  It ruins the entire look for me. -2/10 for being a completely clueless douche and wearing that hat.  RDJ looks ok, the messy tie, shoes is stupid.  It’s as if they had a “Who can looking douchier” contest.  TIE.

Eh, considering RDJ’s other role as man chid with a big iron suit…I give him a pass as dressing like one.  :D Got to have us thinking about the Avengers now and then.

Jude Law…I love you, but what the hell.  Those are sweatpants or something.  Not good pants.  *shakes head*

I hate Jude’s pants.  They ruin a smashing effort on his top half. That headwear (an extreme beret) and the handsome blazer call for some pleated pants with a nice drape.

RD, Jr. has an over inflated idea of how clever and desirable he is.  During the press tour for the first Iron Man, I saw him say on more than one talk show how he would get to the set each day and toss the script out the window and improvise his own dialogue and that’s why the movie was a success.  Yeah, right.  And the first Sherlock movie was dreck so I don’t have high hopes for this new one (although Guy Ritchie may have had a lot more to do with how bad the first one was than RD).

Jude looks like a color blind usher.

Are you guys smoking something? When you said “study in opposites” I thought you mean “study in opposite ways to look equally craptastic.”

Downey at least scores a couple of points with me for having one complete look. It may be Billy Joel’s look from 1982, but it’s a look.

Jude Law looks like he went through the Goodwill box. The best thing I can say about his mismatched, ill-fitting ensemble is that it appears to be clean.

Wow TOTALLY disagree with you!  The sneakers on RDJ2 are a no, but so are Jude’s pants, jacket (particularly when combined with those pants!) and hat.  And possibly facial hair.

OK, I had to ponder this one for a few days.

Jude: It’s the pants and the attitude. The stripe is too fat for such a skinny cut and the combined effect makes his legs–especially below the knee– look like twigs. It’s that, and the fact that he looks like he really needs a chill pill. But man, can he ROCK the navy blue. Talk about bringing out the eyes. The hat… enh. It doesn’t give me conniptions like it apparently does to some, but it’s not good.
RDJ: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA adorable. I want to play legos and video games with this man. He should have gone the whole nine yards and arrived with his tie around his head like a frat boy.

If Downey had worn proper men’s dress shoes and Law had left the hat at his cottage, they’d both look terrific.

    • JudeLawGuardian

I’d do both of them. I just want to be in the middle of that sandwich…
