Michelle Obama Gets Her Christmas On

Posted on December 14, 2011

Shelley O gets on with the donning of the red and the green, giving it her own little spin. But taken with the blue Hanukkah dress the other day, it’s safe to say she feels the need to be extremely traditional in her holiday color choices.

U.S. first lady Michelle Obama attends a book reading at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington. First lady Michelle Obama is wearing a Marc Jacobs dress.

But we’ll never not love that the First Lady wears Marc Jacobs. This looks surprisingly good on her, considering the huge panel around her waist, but this time, the proportions are just right. She looks chic.

But someone really needs to tell her to stop wearing boots that go up under the skirt like that. Turns your legs into tree trunks, darling. Those boots are meant to be worn with a pair of jeans or a mini-skirt.

That dog is freaking adorable.

US President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters at the taping of “Christmas in Washington” at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. First lady Michelle Obama is wearing a Cushnie et Ochs dress.

About as traditional as it gets, but she looks stunning in it. That is her color and that is SO her neckline.

The green dress is spot. on.

The Obama girls could not be any cuter.

Seriously. They’re little fashionistas in training. Another reason to love Michelle–she’s passing on her skills.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Heather-Waddell/10401341 Heather Waddell

Fashonistas, but totally age-appropriate. That purple dress is pretty in all the right ways, and I LOVE the coordinated tights. That right there is a young lady who can wear a bow. The yellow dress is also to die for, and a subtle nod to the season rather than an overt one.

          • Anonymous

That yellow dress is so fabulous, I can’t even.

            • sekushinonyanko

               It’s very Mad Men’s Megan.

        • Anonymous

Yes!  Both the girls look great.  Kudos to her for knowing how to dress them, though I guess we shouldn’t be suprised.  Good and stylish mom!
If she doesn’t have enough to do, she could go out to Hollywood and style the young teen set since nobody in out there seems to know what to do with them.  Malia looks just right.

        • Anonymous

Fashionistas in training! I used that too, before reading or I’d have credited you.

      • Anonymous

        I know, they’re wonderful! I love them.

      • Anonymous

Seriously. Also, sometimes it hits you fresh that the first family is a black family, and it’s like Inauguration Day 2009 all over again. Fabulous!

On an unrelated note, that is the thinnest Santa in history.

      • Shannon Twigg

        also quite young!

Here comes a secret service guy in santa suit.

I was wondering why the White House hadn’t hired a Real Bearded Santa (http://www.aorbsinc.com)…  This makes perfect sense!

She is trying to combat childhood obesity after all…they apparently got word in the North Pole too!

Obviously Santa’s been buying into the healthy eating & exercise program.

Are we not supposed to talk about the kids? Because Malia looks AMAZING in that yellow minidress. Such a great look on her!!

I like Michelle’s dresses, too. Both look great on her and are appropriate to the occasions. Agreed on the boots, though.

      • http://twitter.com/WendyPan6 Wendy Pan

I think that until the kids are of a certain age AND start seeking out public attention on their own, it’s unfair to say anything other than nice things about them.

That being said, they sure do make it easy to say nice things!  So cute.

    • Anonymous

What impressed me most is the Obama daughter (I forget her name, sorry.) in a yellow Elizabeth and James dress.  Cute!

Malia’s the elder (in goldenrod), Sasha’s the younger (in lavender), and they both look entirely fab and adorable, just like their lovely mom.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

LLLLOVE that green dress. She looks amazing in it. And her hair and make-up are stunning.

Yeah, hate those boots on her. She needs a new pair….

    • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

I love that green dress so much it’s ridiculous. She should get that in every color. And I still don’t know which one is Sasha and which is Malia but I love purple one’s tights.

      • http://www.facebook.com/claudeth.forbin Claudeth Forbin

Sasha is wearing the purple dress.  Malia is in the yellow dress.

      • Patty Wetli

I think the problem is that they’re so often referred to as “Sasha and Malia,” when Malia is the older one.

        • Anonymous

What?  Is there a rule that the older one should get mentioned first?

          Hmph.

If there is, nobody mentioned it to my family.  My brothers and I usually get named youngest to eldest.

Patty – Yes! That’s confusing. Usually (in my life anyway) the oldest comes first.

I can’t believe how tall the older one is. Lucky girl, she’s long and lean.
          They’re both adorable.

Malia’s already there as far as I’m concerned; she’s gorgeous. Looks so much like her mother, too. While I normally don’t like either shiny or that shade of gold-yellow, I think she (and that dress) looks FABULOUS. I love those sleeves. LOVE THEM. Everyone looks fantastic: President Dad, Mom, kids, dog.

          • http://twitter.com/RzYoung RzYoung

Is that their dog?! Omg, those white boots! They look awesome! ;)

            • http://profiles.google.com/mochizukisan kyasarin mochizuki

That’s Bo, their Portugese Water Dog. One of the girls has allergies, so they went for a hypoallergenic breed.

Bo’s so cute, he makes me want to get a Portugese Water Dog, too.

          • Anonymous

It’s the skin tone. Like her mother, she has that skin that just looks fantastic in color.
First Pooch is adorable. Such a cute doggie.

    • Anonymous

Aww. I just can’t help but be happy every time I see the First Family together. They always seem so comfortable together. Sasha and Malia look adorable here- love the lavender dress with the raspberry tights, and I adore that yellow dress. The Marc Jacobs ensemble is so completely Michelle, and the green dress is gorgeous- classy and sexy, which isn’t that easy a combo to pull off, especially when you’re First Lady.

    • Anonymous

I’m fine with the high boots–it’s cold now in Washington!  Just because the starlets routinely freeze doesn’t mean the First Lady has to.

      • Anonymous

Plus, (unless she has a bunch of look-alikes) I kind of like that she seems to like her fancy brown boots and is looking out for opportunities to wear them.

    • Anonymous

I would never have guessed Marc Jacobs designed the first dress. It’s not a criticism, just didn’t strike me as MJ.

The second dress is lovely, but their older daughter looks even more chic.

I see Santa has taken belt placement lessons from Shelly O.

    • Anonymous

Wow, Malia could go into modeling.

    • Ebony Dawkins

Look at Malia growing up! That yellow dress is fantastic! She must get her fashion sense from her mom, who is looking stupendous in that green frock! Gorgeous family!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

Malia is going to be 7 feet tall.

I totally dig the ensemble of jewel tones these ladies are sporting – so festive without being the standard red green and white.

That green is a fabulous color on Mrs. Obama. Loving Malia’s yellow dress too.

Michelle looks awesome as usual, but Malia and Sasha are totally rocking it! Malia in particular looks soooo good, especially considering she’s in that awkward teenage stage. And, love to see her daddy holding her close, she’ll be grown up before he knows it!

      • http://twitter.com/LilahMorgann Sarah Rivas

I remember feeling so gawky and weird at that age, poor thing has to go through it in front of an entire country! Such a nice and happy family though :)

        • Anonymous

Yes. I would bet money that SHE doesn’t look at pictures of herself at these events and think all the positive things we do. (Probably she’s smart enough, having grown up as a politician’s daughter, not to look at too many of the pictures.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1230057270 Allie Carter

I’m loving the kid (a page?) walking in with Mrs. Obama and Santa – He looks like he can’t quite believe he’s there, but wants to be cool about it.

    • Anonymous

And look how fashion-forward the girls are, too! Love that yellow dress.

    • RocknLox

So glad you guys saw this. Anyway, they look amazing! I still do not understand why they put Sasha in crinoline so often. I feel her pain. I went through the same situation as a kid. I know that she’s the baby of the family, but commmmmon! Anyway, the first family, as always, is gorgeous. Love the color story.

      • Anonymous

Who knows, maybe it’s what Sasha likes.

        • Anonymous

That’s what I’m betting. They consistently dress fairly differently (more so than just dictated by the age difference, I think), so I assume the girls get some input in to what clothes they wear, within defined limits.

    • RocknLox

Malia is the elder, taller sister. Sasha is the younger one. Lol! At least they’re not like the Fannings. I can never tell them apart.

    • Anonymous

That green dress is GORGEOUS and the girls look fab too.

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I with you on the general principle that the tops of tall boots shouldn’t disappear under medium length skirts because it renders legs tree-trunky. But I was actually going to comment about how impressed I was at how well-fitting the boots are; her legs are not trunkified here.

The colors are great, once again. I might have put Malia next to her mom and Sasha next to dad because I like how those colors would have worked together, but hey. :)

      • Anonymous

I think it’s totally fine till she sits down. Then her knee situation gets weird. Then again, I have yet to see a pair of over-the-knee boots that didn’t get weird when the wearer sits down.

        • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Oh, good call on the knee situation.

    • Anonymous

Happiness is a fine accessory here.  Everyone looks lovely, well-fitted, becoming colors.  A quadruple play of loveliness.

    • Anonymous

I think the First Lady’s green dress is a little bit sexy for the occasion, but not so much that it looks out of place.  Malia is going to be stunning when she outgrows her gawky phase.

      • Anonymous

A little like summer in that dress.  Beautiful but oh my bare.

    • Rand Ortega

Mrs. Obama is breathtaking. That green dress particularly is fantastic. Pitch perfect.
Little Sasha (she’s going to get that until she’s 30!) is adorbs! Ballerina style is very in for girls her age.
Malia looks like a Ford model.
Oh, & that guy they always bring along, he’s pretty cute, too. He works a great pant length. No puddles.

    • Anonymous

That is one good looking first family!

DAMN!  Malia is one tall girl!  She’s almost Barack’s height, and she’s wearing flats!  Oh…and I love the green dress, Shelly!  Well played.

I LOVED that Marc Jacobs dress. I want one! And I also loved her green dress.  Much better than the ultra blue from the other day.

    • Jessica Goldstein

I feel really weird commenting on a kid who’s not an entertainer, but I love Malia’s look here. Really cute, suits her well, and age appropriate, too. That’s one awesome looking family.

    • Anonymous

She looks AMAZING in the green dress and the girls look pretty darn fantastic too. Sasha looks adorable and Malia looks so chic. But what I really want is the dog.

    • Anonymous

Shelley looks just stunning in both dresses.  She is just SUCH a lovely woman — I am so proud to her her as our First Lady!   That green dress is to DIE for!

And young Malia is turning into one tall young drink of water, isn’t she?  But such a graceful tall — she has lovely posture, which is often lacking in girls who shoot up so much so fast.  She’s nearly 6′, but wearing every inch with pride.  You go, girl!  Oh, and the dress is charming!  As is Sasha’s — it’s a much younger girl’s party dress, which is exactly right, and yet makes her look absolutely adorable.  I know the Obamas are incredibly proud of both girls, and well they should be!

Although perhaps what’s most amazing is that neither girl looks embarrassed to be seen with the parents.  What magic have Barry and Shelley wrought to avoid being considered subhuman by their children? :)

      • Anonymous

Their parents are the President and the First Lady of the United States.

What’s there to be embarassed about?

        • Anonymous

Malia is 13 years old.  At that age, it doesn’t matter who your parents are.  Their very existence is embarrassing.  Sasha’s got a couple of years to go before they embarrass her.

        • Anonymous

Sadly, having the President & First Lady for parents is *worse* than having average parents at that age, I’m pretty sure. Because people are ALWAYS noticing what they do and, far worse, associating you with them.  If the words “Oh my God, why couldn’t I just have a NORMAL family??!!!!” aren’t moaned, spoken or thought at least weekly in their home, then the Obamas are very, very lucky parents indeed.

    • Anonymous

I’d like to see the older daughter – when she is of an appropriate age – in a runway/editorial/fashion photo spread.  She is a lovely young girl and I think her bones in her face are going to be gorgeous once she hits her 20’s.

    • Anonymous

Everyone looks great. Love Malia’s yellow dress. Some of the RC teens could take style lessons from her. I have two standard poodles and that there on Bo is a $100 hairdo.

      Dear Tom & Lorenzo,
I love your blog very much, however looking through the archives is a pain in the ass. I wanted to look at Project Runway final collections from past seasons and couldn’t find the posts. Can you remedy this? Thank you

      • Anonymous

Hint: type in final collections in the search bar. Alternatively, go under the reality TV tab to “Project Runway”. You may have to click back a bit to find the season you desire. But if you’re that determined to see them, it really isn’t difficult.

I work on a college campus, and brightly colored tights like Sasha is wearing are really popular right now. I guess leggings and tights are just popular in general, since it means the students can wear all their summer clothes just with the tights added. :)

That whole family is ridiculously good looking.

      That green dress is FAB.

    • Anonymous

      That dog is freaking adorable.

I completely agree, and I’m a cat person!

I do not like the belt on Michelle.  (Actually, you can just take that as read most of the time.)    The dress itself is fine.  The green dress, though, is killer!  Love it!

You know what I love about Malia?  She’s got braces, and she still smiles with her teeth showing!  I was clearing out some drawers the other day, and came across the Christmas card from them just after he was elected to the Senate.  Malia has this big, gap-toothed smile on her face (she’d have been 6 and losing her baby teeth).  Girl doesn’t care – if she’s happy, she’s gonna smile!  And we know that’s the best accessory a person can wear.

That green dress, traditional? With that crisscross design and decolletage? In whose world? She looks hot!

Those girls look wonderful, too. Absolutely precious.

The Marc Jacobs is a nice way to do a non-traditional take on a holiday color.  The dress and the boots look great when she’s standing.  Not so much seated.  The green dress is just fabulous.  Chic and sexy.  Maybe a little too sexy and skin-baring for a First Lady.  The girls look adorable.  And the dog is possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

      So great.

Love both of Michelle’s dresses and both the girls.’ BO looks exhausted…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Not in love with the Marc Jacobs look, though it could be the boots and the matchy tights.  Love the green dress, need it in my close immediately.  However, that yellow dress her daughter has on is entirely too short to be worn with those tights.  I’m a bit concerned they were trying to dress her like a bell.

    • Aly Light

Man, I just want to be part of that family.

    • Judy_J

The whole family looks great in that last photo.  Love the girls dresses, especially that yellow with the bell sleeves.  So ’60s retro and cute!

    • Cathy S

Love that picture of Michelle and Bo. So very cute. The wide sash looks really good until she sits down. Ah well. I’m not that crazy about the green dress except for the color, which I love and which looks great on her. But Malia’s yellow dress is soooo cute and she looks so fabulous.

    • Anonymous

The green dress is perfect. I like the first look too, I just wish it didn’t have that wide panel across her middle. Hair and makeup are very pretty, as usual. I agree about those high boots, TLo. Not the most flattering. I’m worried about those shots of her sitting. She’s thisclose to showing the First Good China.

Ok, I don’t want to ding the child, because she’s a child and she’s the cutest thing ever, but Michelle needs to stop letting her choose her own dress/tights combination. That’s an eyesore right there.
The older child looks stunning in that shade of yellow.

    • Anonymous

I hate to be the one to say this, but I think the reason the panel on the MJ dress works this time is because she’s lost weight. I thought she was fine before…. but the fact is she’s more in proportion now, since most of the weight seems to have come off below her waist.

And…I think they’re such a beautiful family, I could cry for joy. So proud to have them represent us. The girls are such a great example of how girls their age should dress. And, go Bo!

Love both on her…also, what a stylish family, the girls look smashing, too. Also, that picture of Mrs. Obama giving the sideways look to “Santa”? Priceless!

Look at those pretty girls with her!

The Obamas are, collectively, the best dressed bunch we’ve had in the White House in ages. Bo, however, really needs a big red ribbon to set off his black & white poofiness.

The maroon outfit was a good color, but the contrasting fabric at the waist made her waist disappear.  She has an athletic build, so she needs the waist definition.   The green dress was also a gorgeous color, and the flared skirt was very flattering.  It seems that straight skirts make her look ‘hippy’.  I know she is down to fighting weight, but straight skirts make her upper legs look ‘thick’.  Her shoulders are not wide enough and substantial enough to balance the lower part of the hour-glass.  Slightly flared skirts seem to be her best friend, dress wise.  She absolutely knows the best colors for herself.   Her daughters look wonderful.

Hawtest first family evah. I’m obsessing over that green dress. And Malia. What a fabulous bunch.

Darn, she can wear that neckline.

      & I spot some fashionistas-in-training.

I love that the parents seem to let the girls have some leeway in what they choose to wear without allowing them to even approach the inappropriate. (Which, in the world of teen fashion these days is just a nice way to say trashy).

I heart the First Family. So good lookin’.

Shelley looks great in both looks.  And wow, Malia is getting so tall. She’s going to be tall and fabulous just like her mama.

Ummmmm, lovely color of green but I fear the First Lady is showing too much boobage.  I guess I’m an old fuddy duddy but I just don’t think that’s a look that is appropriate.  And the girls look beautiful.

I’ve never notices it until these pics but Sasha definitely favors her paternal grandmother in terms of her features.

But really, every time I see a woman in a neckline like that, I have nightmares about her getting caught on a meathook and strangled by the dress.  It’s creepy.

They all look fabulous. I LUUUUV Sasha’s color combo – go forward you little fashionista! And Malia’s retro-Sixties dress is fab! What a good lookin’ family. Shelley looks as chic as ever in both her outfits. Of course!

Green dress is amazing! I love me some Marc Jacobs, but no to that dress. It’s horrible.

That neckline on the green dress makes the First Biceps look even more badass.  Damn, MObama!  You work those killer biceps!

I can’t even look at Shelley with Malia standing right there.  Get that girl on a runway!

They all look fabulous, love Sasha’s lavender dress/maroon tights combo.  And Malia looks amazing, I love that color on her.  Is she 6′ tall already?  She IS model material.

Whatever anyone’s political differences, we should savor this moment because it will be a long time before we have another First Family that looks this good.

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

      Gorgeous, all of them!
