Michelle Obama Decks the Halls

Posted on December 01, 2011

Shelley O welcomed military families to the White House to view and make holiday decorations, darlings. In the spirit of the season, let’s judge her clothes.

That rose brooch is beautiful and really makes the outfit, bumping it up from being too simple. The dress is sharp in its own way, but we would have thought it was too demure a style for her.  Girl is definitely pulling it off, though. The fit is great; she always looked best in this style dress, but she’s slimmed down considerably. Love the patterned hose. Hair and makeup look soft and pretty. A simple, chic day look that doesn’t set her on a pedestal above her guests. Nicely done.

That is a great outfit.  I love those patterned hose too.  I need some.  Now.

  • Anonymous

I love that she has the dog with her…she looks great, any ideas on who makes the dress?

  • Anonymous

In complete agreement with you, gentlemen.  The pin is subtle but the right accent to add to the sparkle that the collar has.  Ms. Obama looks relaxed, too.  No mean feat these days.

    All the best,

  • Anonymous

I secretly hope she matched her outfit to Bo.  I have an irrational love for that dog.

  • Sobaika Mirza

What’s happening with that collar – is it sequined???

    • Anonymous

The sequined collar makes her the FUN spinster!

  • Anonymous

I’d go so far as to say WERQ.

    • Anonymous

      So would I.

I saw an interview with her by Al Roeker a few months back where she said that traveling so much when they’re campaigning can take a toll so both she and Mr. Pres. needed to develop a workout regiment to prepare. She looks stunning.

Love it! Perfect! Bravo Shelley O!

The first lady looks damn good. Love her, Love the look.

She looks fab! Love the little details (rose brooch, spotted tights, sequined collar). Her body is seriously rocking too!

  • http://www.celestiae.net Isy

She is so lovely! Love the sparkly collar too.

  • http://twitter.com/csteinert Caitlin Steinert

Idk guys, I think the dress looks a little too… pilgrim nun. That collar is the problem, really. And the placement of the brooch seems a bit too precious. And not in the good way. Which is too bad, because it’s a really pretty piece. Overall, I always think she looks amazing, but I’m underwhelmed by this getup.

    • Anonymous

I thought pilgrim too…would have been perfect a  week ago!

    • Anonymous

For a second I thought – Oh, it’s a Thanksgiving dress! – still, I think it looks terrific.

  • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Maybe it’s just that I’ve been watching too much Downton Abbey, but this looks too much like a maid’s uniform (sans apron, of course: http://bit.ly/tIjBH4) to me. An unusually lovely, flattering, and well-fitted one, to be sure, but the white collar bumps it over the line.

But I do think the brooch is gorgeous and I LOVE how she placed it at the collar. It really does accentuate the sparkle.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Good point. There was something that was bothering me about it almost subliminally, and that’s it.

    • Anonymous

My thought exactly.  And because she is African-American, it made me shudder a bit, esp. when she’s in pics with the chefs.

    • Carey Cauthen

Maid was the very first thing I thought when I saw the pic. It fits her well, but I cannot begin to like it because all she needs is an apron and a duster.

    • Anonymous

      what I said, too.

  • David Lowe

I hate it. It makes her look like the old bitter maid. Maybe I’m just in a scrooge mood, but I can’t honestly see what’s to love about the whole thing. The brooch is awesome though.

  • Anonymous

Yeah. Too bad the lady next to her didn’t get the memo on “chic…”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Ooooh, not digging the patterned hose. Other than that, I think she looks great.

  • Anonymous

I used to have that dress. She looks WAY better in it than I ever did.

I love black dresses with white collars. And it is the perfect dress for the brooch.

  • Anonymous

She looks downright GORGEOUS!  WERQ that, Mrs. President!

Of course her best accessory isn’t the rose brooch, as fab as that is. It’s the dog.  Perfectly matched.

    • Anonymous

The dog DOES look great next to/behind her!

I think she looks sensational, as she almost always does. And she always manages to look as if she is having the time of her life–even with cameras clicking every half-second.

The fit of the dress is amazing, the patterned hose are gorgeous–she just always does us proud.

      • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Urban Gypsy aka Tess

My first thoughts were that she looked sexy as hell while being totally covered up, a WERQ in my book, and how well matched she was to the dog, but I LOVE dogs and that one is super freaking adorable.

  • Anonymous

    She’s awesome.

  • Anonymous

She does a great job of picking the right clothes for the occasion. This event is for the kids so she wears something relatively low key but great looking. And I have to say her smile is her best accessory. That fourth picture where she is smiling at something the little girl in red is showing her. It’s just stunning in it’s sincerity.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I totally wish I were 8 and cool enough to get invited to a White House holiday event.

  • Anonymous

    Love this look!

  • Anonymous

She looks great. I really like that dress. Any idea who it is?

  • Anonymous

    Perfect in my jaded eyes.

  • Anonymous

Totally a WERQ. The top says matronly, the bottom says HOT. Good on you, First Lady!

  • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

    Awesome look, it’s flawless~~!!

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

She comes across looking exactly like we all want the ideal Mom to be like.  Pitch perfect, Shelley!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I have to agree with other posters.  Teh first thing I thought was “maid”.  I didn’t even notice the tights till I read TLo’s opinion.  I do love the brooch, but that is about it.  Killer bod Shelly O.  Bravo.

  • Anonymous

She looks great. I love that rose brooch. Anyone know anything about it?

  • Anonymous

Is it a dress? It looks like the top is separate from the skirt (I think I see a hem). The details on that collar are cute.

  • Nicole Runde

UH did she steal this dress from MOIRA of AHS???

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

Am I the only one who thought ‘maid uniform’?

  • Anonymous

Maybe it’s slightly evocative of a maid’s uniform but I think she looks fab. If my job required me to get out and mingle and to step up beyond jeans and t-shirts I would love this for a business function.

  • Anonymous

No, not a maid’s uniform.  I’m thinking Wednesday Addams.  But on her it is a fabulous look.  After the White House gig she could get a job as a consultant for celebrities on the red carpet, to show them a thing or two about fit and accessorizing.

  • Anonymous

just where is that photographer aiming in the photo with her & Bo??

  • Anonymous

Sharp is exactly the word that came to mind as soon as I saw this. Love.

  • Anonymous

I adore the pin and damn, does that fit her beautifully. And it’s also a smart choice not to compete with the holiday decorations in the background. The stark simplicity really stands out. Bravo again.

  • Judy_J

What a great look, and so perfect for the occasion. I love that sparkly collar!

  • Anonymous

i am a sucker for anything black with a white collar, the added sparkle of the collar and broach keeps it from looking pilgrimish…she looks fantastic!

  • http://twitter.com/SarahVotes Sarah Bailey

Are you sure she wasn’t channeling her inner pilgrim for Thanksgiving?

  • Rebecca Johnson

I think she looks wonderful and appropriate. I love that she (rather than a staffer) is wrangling the dog around the proceedings.

  • Anonymous

Black and white is so difficult without edging into wait staff/housekeeper territory.  Overall, she looks very classy here, and I like the broach a lot.  I’m still not a fan of black and white for the aforementioned reasons.  I should mention, I was part of the wait staff in my younger days, so I could be biased.  To this day, I cannot wear black and white together.

  • Anonymous

I LOVE THIS!!!!! I would heart it if I weren’t philosophically against hearting. But it’s so cute! It’s adorbs! I want to be her and wear that and look that good in it! It’s like Wednesday Addams grew up and fell in love with somebody super smart and got to be all High Achiever and Emotionally Healthy with just a hint of the Wednesday we all remember. LOVE!!!!

  • Anonymous

I just don’t care for this look. I would have preferred she choose something more festive, which could still have been simple and chic for daytime. Lovely brooch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

I agree.. even if she would have went with the same dress in red or dark green.  Just a color would have added the oomph without it looking like a maid’s outfit.

  • Anonymous

This is one of my favorite looks ever for her.  Definitely a WERQ.  I understand how some might find it a little too evocative of a pilgrim/nun/maid/Wednesday Adams and there are elements of all that, but it makes me think of classic Chanel and it’s so very chic.  And the bod looks hot.  She’s lost a ton of weight.

Maybe Bo is much better behaved than my own dog but I cringe when I think of a young dog in a room full of Christmas trees, children, lots of other people, tables of craft materials and flashbulbs, all on a loose carpet.  Disaster waiting to happen!

  • Anonymous

I would only say it’s a tad bit somber for the occasion — children’s tree-trimming party — but she looks fantastic.

Having said that, I find myself wondering: it must be quite a challenge to plan the First Lady’s daily wardrobe. I’m assuming that she’s going to have other public duties on any given day, and she’s going to have the (or the desire) to change clothes for each one unless it’s really a must. In other words, she’s got a day-into-night problem most of us can’t even imagine.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

    She…looks…beautiful! Way to go!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    I love her.

  • Anonymous

I love the dress, and your commentary on it is spot on.

  • MilaXX

    LOVE this entire look.

  • Anonymous

That brooch is to die.  I love it.

I think this whole look is just the right combination of FLOTUS + Everyday Lady You Can Relate To.  Well done, Shelley.

  • Anonymous

I agree that this look is nicely done.  Great dress, great brooch, great fit, etc…

My only criticism is that it is too demure for a Holiday event with kids.  Something more festive may have been a better choice for this occasion, and save this outfit for a more conservative luncheon, cocktail party or other state event.

  • Anonymous

She is lovely, but her eyebrows are seriously SCARY in some of these pictures. They need to be toned down.

  • Anonymous

Pitch perfect.  Elegant, demure, perfectly accessorized.

  • Anonymous

The fit is what makes this work so well. She looks great, but this outfit could have veered into twee or dumpy so easily. She balanced everything just perfectly.

  • Anonymous

that is a real stunner of a dress.
does anyone know who made it?

  • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

Perfect look for the event, and it sets off her figure well.

  • Anonymous

She looks amazing.  It is an outfit that would have looked silly at Thanksgiving, but looks elegant for Christmas.

  • penn collins

At first I thought it was too tame, but WOW, she really makes the outfit, and that brooch as the *perfect* touch- the temptation to go ‘bad holiday’ would have been so easy to do here, but dang Ms O- you are a classic!

  • Anonymous

I owned that dress — minus the pave rose pin — in dark green back in the late 80s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/epramos Emilio Ramos

Isn’t she a couple days late to be wearing Pilgrim drag?

  • Anonymous

Hmmm. Like so many of the collared dresses around lately, it gives her a look that is somewhere between schoolgirl and French housemaid. Not loving it. If it weren’t black I think it wouldn’t look so much like a very upscale uniform.

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

My thought exactly!! The white collar against the black dress just reminds me of hired help.

She looks so hipster! I swear I’ve seen this dress on Alexa Chung.

  • Anonymous

    Love it, she looks fabulous!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

Love the brooch! I’m so glad Mad Men kind of brought them back into vogue for all ages. I just wish she’d added a little more colour, especially since this was a Christmas event with children. Maybe dressing in more sombre tones was a mark or respect to the sacrifice of the soldiers?

  • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

Who else thinks that Michelle Obama is guilty of… CHRONIC SLOUCHING??!?!?!? Stand up straight, woman! You’re the First Lady! You’re wearing expensive designer clothing! YOU DO NOT SLOUCH WHILE WEARING EXPENSIVE DESIGNER CLOTHING!

  • Anonymous

This look is knock-it-out-of-the-park fabulous. That is all.

  • Judy Raddue

Can she be First Lady forever???

  • Anonymous

Wow, she looks incredible. She has a really great face, and the simplicity of this outfit shows it off well.

  • http://twitter.com/Bloodisea Barbora

Lovely outfit. Michelle is very chic woman :)

i hate patterned hose but i love everything else.  those lips are spectacular.  wish i could recreate those at home!!

  • foodycat

Poor dog, having to be on a leash in his own house.

  • Anonymous

For the love of god, can this woman please grow out those over plucked eyebrows? It makes her face so severe! At least pay someone to fill them in.

  • Anonymous

Mr. Obama is a lucky man

  • http://profiles.google.com/withano Loren S

She looks good, but a little bit like she’s wearing a Sexy Nun costume.

  • Anonymous

She is awesome. End of story.

    elegant as always

    Wednesday Addams couture!

  • Ebony Dawkins

That brooch is beautiful. I love how impeccably dressed she is. Super chic, yet very accessible.

  • Kaye Evans

That is Jason Wu, I could tell from the collar.

  • Anonymous

So close to perfect, I can’t complain (although of course I will: I would have liked a shoe one level up, jazz-factor-wise, even a patent would have been oomphier).  And yes, the lips are gorgeous.

  • http://profiles.google.com/starstattootoo kane watkins

    It’s Wednesday Addams Obama.

  • Anonymous

dayum. That is a WERQ for me. PERFECT for the situation. SO simple and so chic. Sincerely not everyone could pull this off so well.

Who’s a good dog! Bo’s a good dog! Yes, he is! Yes, he is!

Oh, yeah. The First Lady looks lovely.

    But, DOGGIE!

  • Patricia Gillett

The patterned hose took it over the top, in a good way. From safe to stylish. WERQ it, FLOTUS!
