Matt Damon for GQ Magazine

Posted on December 14, 2011

The last time the Damon graced these pages, nearly a year ago now, we were extremely distressed to see him rush headlong into early middle age and frumpdom when we knew he still had a couple years of hotness left.

Clearly our disapproval sent him into a tailspin and then he dug himself out of it, in a tale full of humanity and pathos.

In other words, he’s back to embracing the hotness.

Matt Damon featured in the January 2012 issue of GQ magazine photographed by Ben Watts.

Polo shirt and jeans by Prada. Sneakers by Common Projects.

Henley by Dsquared2. Cords by AllSaints. Necklace by Rogues Gallery.

Sweater by Club Monaco. T-shirt by Calvin Klein Underwear. Jeans by Dior Homme. Sneakers by Converse. Watch by IWC.

Polo shirt, $185 by Band of Outsiders. Necklace by Rogues Gallery.

Well done, Matt. We approve. Although you look somewhat hilariously uncomfortable in the nippletastic henley.

Why is he dressing as Mark Wahlberg?

    • Anonymous

That third shot where he’s wearing what TLo deliciously referred to as a “nippletastic” shirt–I did a doubletake thinking someone had slipped in a photo of Marky Mark.

    • Anonymous

      I was wondering that myself.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

      I often confuse the two.

    • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

They could be twins, right? So it’s not just me…

      • Anonymous

Definitely not just you. I remember when the ads for The Departed (excuse me, The Dapaahted, as it’s known where I come from) started running on TV: I realized they were both in the movie and thought, “Jesus, I’m screwed.” I actually have a much easier time telling them apart after seeing that movie a couple times! Bonus.

        • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

:) I have to watch it then. Cheers!

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I agree – was completely confused during that movie because I can NOT tell the two of them apart. As Siriuslover notes below – it’s becoming more pronounced as they age. I swear they’re twins separated at birth.

          Cute pics of Matt, though.

      • Anonymous

no, it’s not just you.  It’s more noticeable as they age, too.

    Generic but cute

I WOULD DO SO MANY NAUGHTY THINGS TO HIM.

Ahem. He is a fine actor.

      • Anonymous

        FINE ON SO MANY LEVELS.

Yep, @angelarose27:disqus – I feel the same way, and I’m a straight middle-aged married man.

that cover shot is cheese-o-rama but i still love him.

  • Jasmine Moten

You know who does look great in a henley? Michael C. Hall.

    • foodycat

I was thinking of the killing shirt too!

    • Anonymous

So much word.  That man is sex on a stick.  Where are his editorials??

      • Anonymous

UNGH YES WHERE ARE THEY. Magazines of America, a nation turns its hungry eyes to you.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=8337746 Allison Fisseler

When my fiance wears a henley I call it his Dexter shirt. And it is sexy on both of them.

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

The henley picture reminds me of the Bruce Weber layout he did for Interview all those years ago.  And he’s probably one of the few actors who’s actually taller and more “substantial” in person.  He’s quite a hunk of man…even if he went from 21 to 40 in the blink of an eye.

  • Anonymous

The cover looks like a Mentos commercial, but overall, I approve.

    • Anonymous

Now that you mention it, it does kinda! haha

    • Anonymous

Matt Damon should absolutely do a Mentos commercial!

  • http://profiles.google.com/thekate Kate Musgrove

OH THANK GOD HE’S HOT AGAIN. He was really spiraling for a while there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6416893 Jenna Kuhmann

    He is soooo gorgeous. LOVE.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

He is adorable, but the cover photo really shows his age. What is he now, 45?
Not that there’s anything wrong with being 45 *cough*, but maybe they could’ve done him a solid and airbrushed the crow’s feet and or opened his eyes a little?
What am I saying? I would do him in a heartbeat!

    • Anonymous

OMIGOD!  After the tsunami of horrified comments over the past few weeks about how awful it is that all flaws are airbrushed and/or Photoshopped out of existence on actresses, now we want it done to men too?

NO NO NO NO NO!  Let’s go the opposite way and give reality a little more of its due.  I love his crow’s feet–they give his face character.  Now, when are we going to say the same thing about a 45-year-old actress??  THAT will be a great day!

      • Anonymous

Agreed so much. Lines add so much character to a face. We’re not made of wax; we’re flesh and blood.
Laugh lines mean you have been laughing, and how can that ever be a bad thing?

    • MilaXX

I’m glad they didn’t air brush out the crow’s feet. I find aging gracefully sexy.

      • Anonymous

Yes, more aging gracefully from everyone, please!

    • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

shut your mouth, he looks amazing for 45.

      • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

        Except he’s only 41.

    • http://youresomartha.wordpress.com/ justine

for some reason, when i saw the crow’s feet, i thought they made him even sexier

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

I think he’s more like 40, 41, just to be perfectly correct.   I KNOW he’s younger than me, and I’m 43.  And he is a total doll.  I read a quote just today from him that his kids make his heart full all of the time.  Now that kind of statement just makes a girl tingle all over.

      • Anonymous

        Word!

    • http://youresomartha.wordpress.com/ justine

for some reason, when i saw the crow’s feet, i thought they made him even sexier

    • Anonymous

Seriously? I think he looks shockingly youthful in that cover! I am 23, if that makes any difference, and my eyes crinkle up that much when I smile. Just when I smile. It turns out, when there’s flesh and skin on a body, moving it around makes it wrinkle up sometimes! No matter your age! SHOCKING EXPOSE, PAGE 45.

      • Anonymous

Why do they always put the shocking expose pieces at the back?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I think he got kind of pudgy for a role last year.  He’s definitely good-looking, but it’s his sense of humor that REALLY does it for me. He was so great on 30 Rock.

    • Anonymous

My feelings exactly.  His acting range is pretty big, and when he does that understated funny, he is hilarious.  I also love him because he hasn’t bought into the Hollywood crap machine.  When was the last time you saw Matt Damon on the cover of some sleaze-rag at the grocery checkout?

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

They’ve been rerunning his episodes of 30 Rock, and I love it. Liz’s boyfriends are always cute or hilarious or both.

      • angela rose

“A doorman? A doorman to THE SKY!”

    • Anonymous

So true. He really comes across as a normal, regular guy you could sit and have a beer and a laugh with.

      • Anonymous

My Boston pride runneth over at this moment.

    • Anonymous

Carol!! What a great job he did with that role. I’m just cracking up thinking about it.

  • Anonymous

My thought: “Boy, that IS your henley”

  • Anonymous

    He looks good.

    • Anonymous

Exactly!  Just look at how it bunches on his shoulders!  I’ve had to get rid of many a top for the same reason . . .

  • Anonymous

Oh, HELL yeah- I can work with this.  Waaaay back in the day I was definitively and unapologetically an “Affleck girl” when comparing these two; I found Matt to be blahsville vanilla in the extreme.  Now, while Ben’s marriage and fatherhood gig has once more given him the patina of bangable respectability, I am a now “Damon girl” all the way.  I remember a few years back actually wondering aloud, “DAMN, when did Matty Damon get hot?!”  (The answer, btw, IMHO, is “Bourne”.)

    • Anonymous

Then his intellect, personality, and commitment to his family just take him to the next level.

  • MilaXX

One of my long time crushes. YUM!

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I don’t like his hair, at least not on the cover. Looks like it was done at home with some Wahl clippers.

  • Anonymous

It’s odd to see a 40+ year old man and still feel that THE most apt word to describe him is “cute.” It’s like he’s the Sally Field of male actors. (Though with greater range.)

Nothing exciting about the clothes, though the sweater is nice. He’s never struck me as exciting either, but I like watching him act and like how he handles humor.

  • Anonymous

not a fan – of him or the pics.  He looks . . . different.  Surgery, weight?  something.

  • Anonymous

He’s got those nice arms, which should NEVER be hidden.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

      Amen, sister.

  • Samantha Sturm

OH MY GOD! My ovaries are aching to have his babies….

  • Anonymous

He looks….awright. A bit dull. Pardon a bit of local reference –  the shoot looks like a Marks & Spencers ad. But then he’s never appealed to me really, although I appreciate him as an actor.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Charming man but not much of a clotheshorse.

Hometown boy rockin’ the muscles.  The best part about him is that he’s a mensch.

Cute boy. Ya’ can’t hate anything about those pics.

  • Rand Ortega

    Yum.

  • Ann Erickson

Reminds me of a boy-band member in the late ’90s. Although I do appreciate the free gun show.

Still hot.  Thank you for sharing.

  • Annabelle Archer

That cover….I keep flashing back to his guest starring role on Will & Grace (A Chorus Lie)

    • Anonymous

He was so great in that episode! I laughed MY ass off when he was fondling Debra Messing’s ass!

  • Anonymous

Generic All-American guy next door stuff, which suits him. Not that that’s a bad thing. Cute.

  • Anonymous

    He’s so dwarvey

  • Anonymous

He looks freaking HOT!!!  And the henley shot…  oooh…*fans herself*

I know. I was like, why did the temperature suddenly go up 15 degrees in this office??

Again I deploy the “Holy flying fucksticks!” What a fine freaking hunk of manflesh.

  • Anonymous

meh, never a fan of this one. I did love him for his GO TEACHERS! smackdown of some dumbass reporter a year or so ago, though. I also wonder about the cover tag: “Hollywood’s Smartest Actor”? Really? They do know that his character in *good will hunting* was, you know, a character, a part that he was playing? He may be a smart cookie but if he’s the smartest Hollywood’s got to offer I’m a bit anxious. Unless, of course, he’s been hiding heretofore untold genius.

    • Anonymous

He attended Harvard, so he’s definitely smart.

      • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

He’s also a big fan of Howard Zinn, which means he has to know who Howard Zinn is.  And he gave an interview once where he so flummoxed the airhead interviewer by talking about his educator mom who would reference Piaget while reprimanding him, and the look on his face like this was perfectly normal while she drooled on herself was fantastic.

  • Anonymous

Aww, he’s so endearing. I don’t find him particularly hot, but I love every interview I’ve ever read or seen of his. I feel like he deserves his success and appreciates it.

  • Anonymous

He always looks like a pretty hot boy-next-door kind of guy.  Very cute.

  • Anonymous

Totally refreshing that he’s going for a younger, more fitted look. If I were a celebrity with money and a personal trainer, I would work it all the time. Once people reach their 40s they tend to favor comfort over style and I am guilty of that. Hooray for Matt for bouncing back from what I called his boring dad look. Now if only someone could get me out of my pajama jeans…..

  • Anonymous

He’s never done anything for me- in the looks department. I like his politics, though!

  • Anonymous

I’m glad to see the hideous hair was just for that zoo movie.  I seldom think of him as sexy—he’s more in the ‘cute’ territory for me–but that ‘strongman’ look is doing things for me!

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

It’s the crooked grin that just slays me, y’all.

    OMNOMDAMON.

Hot damn, I’d like to lick peanutbutter off that man.

  • Anonymous

Excuse me for reading the cover/not being that aware of celebrity activity, but what is his new career?

  • Anonymous

I really like Matt Damon, but he almost looks TOO pumped up to me. It’s okay to be a lean machine. Not everyone has to try as hard as Tommy Girl.

  • Anonymous

It’s a good spread, and he looks very good.
