Kennedy Center Honors Red Carpet

Posted on December 06, 2011

Darlings, it was the 34th Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC, and everyone tried to look classy!

Emily Blunt in Notte by Marchesa

Simple, but very pretty. That’s a great color on her.

Glenn Close

Oh, doll. No. This won’t do at all. Velvet is not your friend. BROWN velvet is NO ONE’S friend.

Laura Otis

Not that we’re defending the “gotta pee” pose deployed so often on the RC, but this is a prime example as to why stylists coach their clients to pose that way. Legs together, sweetie. Stand at a slight angle and bend one knee slightly; the one closest to the cameras. You’ll thank us later.

The dress is fine but the shoes seem too busy for it (even though we like them).

Lynda Carter

Girl, we will never not bow down to you, but while we think the dress is interesting and we love the jacket, we don’t think they actually look all that great together. That beaded panel is a bit too heavy-looking and the dress is a bit too shiny. But hey, we love your hair!

Meryl Streep

Wow. Who knew that Meryl of all people has trouble hitting her mark? Why does the Kennedy Center Honor award have to be so godawful ugly? The dress looks great on her. It’s flattering as hell and the accentuated shoulders are perfect for her.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Theyskens’ Theory

Spectacular. No, really. The hair, the dress, the makeup – it’s all perfect, once again reminding us that when SJP really wants to bring it to the red carpet, the girl can BRING. IT.

Sutton Foster

It’s a fantastic-looking dress until you get to the bottom. It’s not quite a (to borrow a term) “scrolldown fug,” but it is kind of a disappointment. We’d rather the skirt went to the floor. And that hairstyle is doing her no favors.

Is Emily Blunt a mere mortal with a little pooch and not enough Spanx, which would be acceptable and refreshing, or is that the other kind of pooch? Either way, she looks fab.

    • Sobaika Mirza

If she and John Krasinski are procreating, I might die of joy.

        CUTEST BABIES!!!!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BA6BTBV4V3MQRX6K2HDEL7Y7TU MerridithK

    Sarah Jessica Parker looks FLAWLESS!

    • BerlinerNYC

Yes. She looks like a perfect dinner bell, or salt/pepper shaker, or some other perfect china thing you would find atop your unimaginably fashionable dinner table. I mean that in a good way. Damn.

    • Anonymous

Really? it doesn’t even look like she has a human body. it looks like a stem on top of a bell. with a tiny barbie head on top.

Is that a baby bump on Emily??   I’m noticing a lot of larger-than-normal tummys (Shelly O was sporting on in the other post)…I’m chalking it up to the holidays…

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Absolutely looks like a baby bump.

      • Anonymous

Is there any way we can retire the phrase “baby bump”? Ugh. I’ve put up with it for a few years without saying anything and I don’t think I can stand it any more!

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I’m open to suggestions.  Fetal protrusion maybe?

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Might I suggest “Parasitical infection symptom”?  That’s how I always refer to mine — you want to be called a baby, you have to vacate the premises and stop stealing my food and blood and air in return for making me sick!

As I have mentioned, I am not a cheerful pregnant woman.  In fact, “only not homocidal because I’m too fat to move” would be a more accurate description!

          • Now I am The Bee

Ooohh sorry about that bad pregnancy thing.  I was sick for about a month–then breezed through the rest.  Although back in the day–I was referred to as “with child.”  Remember–they couldn’t even say the word “pregnant’ on TV till the 60s.

        • Anonymous

          Bless you for saying that.

  • Anonymous

SJP for the win, followed closely by Emily Blunt (and I usually hate fuscia!).  Glenn Close has to be the “ahem” of the post.

    • King Dex

Glenn Close looks like an over-sized, chipmunk plushie, looking for a playmate! It’s just wrong, wrong, wrong!

      • Anonymous

        Or a couch?

        • Anonymous

Or a Wagnerian opera singer sans horned helmet?

          • Anonymous

Massive opera singer is exactly what I thought.  I just watched the third season of Damages; there is no way she’s half as big as this thing makes her look.

      • Anonymous

Oh, that’s so cute! Now I want to dress up in brown velvet and play with her! I mean in the entirely wholesome kind of way!

  • Anonymous

Sarah Jessica wins the prize! With a close second for Sutton Foster.
La Streep looks like she fastened her dress neckline to her undergarment with hair clips.

    • http://twitter.com/Deac82 Mike M.

psssst…that’s the “Award,” not the neckline to her dress

      • Anonymous

I was wondering why the “lining” was showing on her neckline.

      • http://jessieliz.wordpress.com/ Super Red

AH! That makes sense now. Thanks. :P

      • Anonymous

Okay, Now I want to know who designed an award that  looks like a neckline that has been secured to the underwear with hair clips.

      • Anonymous

I was so happy once I read the caption and found that out, because I was getting ready to be really sad at that horrible attachment to a nice dress.

    • MilaXX

I just posted almost the exact same thing. Great minds and all that.

  • Anonymous

Is Sutton wearing Michael Kors?  This looks a lot like a Michael Kors dress Natalie Portman wore. http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/01/directors-guild-awards-2011.html

  • Anonymous

Love Emily Blunt, love this color on her.  But as usual with Marchesa, the frou-frou leans tacky.
Glenn Close for the Carol-Burnett-does-GWTW award.  My God, that’s awful!  (Although I do have a brown velvet jacket, and it IS my friend, TLo!  Honest!)
I wish that Meryl Streep would get over the idea that to be a serious actress, you have to dress like Mrs. Calvin Coolidge.  She got over it once, with Chris March’s dress.  Why she went back to this sad look is beyond me.

    • Anonymous

“Glenn Close for the Carol-Burnett-does-GWTW award”. EXACTLY! My mind went straight to the Carol Burnett skit.

  • Anonymous

I think SJP looks lost in that dress, kind like she’s playing dress-up in mommy’s clothes.

    • Anonymous

Looking again, it’s the height and width of the skirt. If they were each toned down a bit it would have been great.

  • aimee_parrott

Oh, Glenn Close.  No, no, no.  Shirred brown velvet?  NO.

    SJP looks fantastic.  Wow!

I love Sutton Foster, but boy does she need a better hair-and-makeup person.  The dress is beautiful.

  • Anonymous

SJP? Really? I feel like I am looking at a different one. I hate that dowager do she’s sporting and the dress looks like she might be hiding all the honorees under that big ole black bell – or like she has no feet but little wheelies hiding under there.

I feel bad I am not onboard the minion train…

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Do not feel bad.  I don’t get it, either.

      • Anonymous

Me, neither. Yes, she looks perfect. But it doesn’t look GOOD.

        • Anonymous

          Exactly.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I’m with you.  I want to like it, but then it looks like a huge whale came and ate her.  I can only thing of that pink Oscar de la Renta she wore in SATC with Aleksander P.  It worked b/c it was short.  This, this just doesn’t work for me.

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I’m mostly with you, actually. I like the clean lines and her makeup and her hair very much, but… there’s something about the bodice that’s not quite working for me. The top/side boob exposure is making me want to hike that part of the neckline up just a bit. And the buttons…

      • Anonymous

        It’s too juvenile, pinafore-like.

    • http://twitter.com/FlaviaGPantoja Flavia Pantoja

I don’t like it either. I saw some different pictures and really don’t like the hair-it’s way too big on the back!

    • Anonymous

      YOu’re not alone.

    • Anonymous

I’m riding the same train you are. SJP reminds me of Brooke Astor here. It’s not an insult to either lady, but Sarah Jessica has many, many more years to go before she’s a 90-year-old socialite.

  • Anonymous

Elvis can’t even pull off Brown velvet.

  • scottyf

I think Ms. Close picked a perfect event to model the new Snuggie Gown.

SJP is the penultimate WERQ. Period.

    • Anonymous

Penultimate! SO what is the ultimate?

      • scottyf

        Me. :-)

        • Anonymous

But of course you are! And you always will be.

  • MilaXX

SJP is the clear winner here, although Sutton could have been a contender if the bottom of that dress was cut better. I can’t really judge Meryl’s outfit because the darn award is all I see.

    • King Dex

Meryl looks good, but I thought that rainbow thingie was part of the frickin’ dress! I was very distracted by it as well.

    • King Dex

Meryl looks good, but I thought that rainbow thingie was part of the frickin’ dress! I was very distracted by it as well.

  • Anonymous

I am not on the Love Train with SJP’s dress. She looks like she has a huge bell or small family under that skirt. Too much, it overwhelms her. And Emily does look like a wee bit pregnant? And why isn’t Meryl Streep wearing Chris March again? Or is she??? And Lynda Carter is still gorgeous!!!

  • Anonymous

I cannot get behind SJP’s dress.  It cuts her off, making her appear 3 feet tall.

  • kim i

… but … doesn’t emily blunt look strangely … matronly in this?  and aren’t those ruffles at the waist widening her where they should be nipping?  i am eternally alone.

    • Anonymous

Oh, kim — I’ll come sit by you and we can whisper witty, bitchy things to each other…

  • Anonymous

Drape-y brown velvet on “girls” that are not perky is a sad and saggy NO.  Must file for future reference.  So sorry, because I love Glenn.

    • BerlinerNYC

Right. It seems almost self-sabotagey. (Or stylist sabotagey!) Girlfriend is not half as chunky/dowdy as that dress makes her look. And I don’t think it’s the fabric’s fault; there’s just too much of it, unflatteringly draped. That schmatta makes her look 50 pounds heavier than she is.

  • Anonymous

I’m generally a fan of SJP’s style but I’m not feeling this dress. It’s very Nutcracker-esque…she could hide the whole Jolie-Pitt clan under that skirt. And is Glenn C’s dress velvet? Or velour?

  • Anonymous

Now we know where Cathy Cambridge stole her hairdo – Miss Lynda Carter.  Same gorgeous brunette locks.  And SJP – that’s how it is done!  Applause, applause!

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Oh if only that were true — it would make the Duchess infinitely cooler to discover she’s been styling her hair after Wonder Woman.

  • Anonymous

I discovered Theyskens’ Theory while at a Barney’s co-op in Manhattan this weekend.  Great stuff, and this is no exception.

  • http://jessieliz.wordpress.com/ Super Red

I gotta say… I’m really hating SJP’s look here. It completely alters her shape, and I don’t think it’s in a good way. Love Meryl Streep.

  • Anonymous

Glenn Close’s dress looks like it was made out of a couch.

  • Judy_J

Emily Blunt looks like she’s got a baby bump.  Is she preggers?  Glenn Close’s dress looks like it was made out of Miss Ellen’s potiers. The skirt on SJP’s dress is a bit too bell-shaped for my taste.  I’m not sold on that look.  Meryl Streep looks fabulous.  Love her.

    • Anonymous

Hey, did you memorize GWTW when you were in middle school?  Me too!

      • Judy_J

Oh, yes!  GWTW is my favorite film and book.  “Tomorrow is another day” is also my mantra.  And I share a birthday with Vivien Leigh, so it was meant to be.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Really?  You like both?  Me too!  And so often you hear people say that they love one but not the other because of all the differences.  Um yeah… it’s a 2000 page book, they have to make some changes to make a movie that doesn’t last for 3 days!

And Miss Vivian Leigh has always been one of my style icons because we had the same coloring and hair texture.

  • http://twitter.com/Kokopuff Cheryl Kohs

I usually don’t disagree…but I think SJP looks like a funereal toilet paper cozy.

    • Anonymous

I didn’t see your comment before I posted mine, but I’m glad I’m not the only one.

    • oohsparkley!

I said the exact same thing.  And then I read more posts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Donna-Lynn/514336583 Donna Lynn

Lynda Carter would look MUCH better if the dress were looser. That front panel might still be too heavy with the jacket, but at least she would look like she could take a full breath and maybe sit down once in a while. Shiny only works (IMHO) when it’s smooth and you either have to be pencil thin or it has to fit better to pull it off. Very unforgiving to curves and even the slightest hint of a bump or bulge will be magnified. I don’t get the love for the SJP dress. She’s either holding her boobs behind her arms, which would explain why she’s standing with her arms pressed to her sides, or they’ve been flattened beyond repair. From the angle of this shot, she doesn’t appear to have any boobs at all unless that’s what’s making the skirt look so full.

  • Anonymous

Wow, I really disagree about SJP. I want to stick her on top of a roll of Charmin.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dchockeyguy Trevor Burroughs

Glen Close makes me think of the class Carol Burnett sketch as Scarlet.

  • Anonymous

I have to say I hate most of these dresses. Everything seems to be designed to be tightly fitted with the result that the fabric bunches up, the gathers and ruffles emphasize any roundness. SJP’s dress has structure and avoids this.

  • Anonymous

I feel that Lynda Carter is being tragically ill-served by her bra.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Very delicately worded! I like, and agree.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

      well said…

  • Anonymous

Must disagree with SJP critique…Looks like someone is pumping air into her skirt and she is about to take off. I do love her hair tho.

  • Anonymous

Glenn’s and Lynda’s boobs need to move farther north above their elbows.

  • Anonymous

Whew. That’s an award. I thought Streep’s dress had a ridiculous neckline.  (As an aside, here is one of my favorite Onion headlines of late: “Court Rules Meryl Streep Unable to be Tried by Jury as She Has no Peers.”)

Close looks like she’s wearing a fancy couch slipcover.

Digging the retro-ness of SJP’s look.

    • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

I saw that Onion headline yesterday. I died! So funny.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I like Emily Blunt. SJP looks like she’s arriving to greet the new alien life forms.

  • Anonymous

I also disagree on SJP.  The dress does make her look like a TP cover, and she’s too short not to be overwhelmed by the volume. The hairstyle both elongates an already very elongated face, and makes her look too severe.  It’s a very unforgiving style, and she’s at the age where she needs some forgiveness.

  • Anonymous

SJC spectacular? Really? I think that dress makes her look about one inch tall.

    Loved Emily Blunt’s dress.

  • Anonymous

Glen Close looks like she’s wearing a snuggie.  Meryl is fantastic, but that dress is UGLY.

  • Ozski

I want to applaud SJP for her sense of glamour and whimsy but I just don’t think she has the right punim for that hair-do. Also, she is too tiny for that gown.

  • Anonymous

My goodness, them’s some awful dresses.  Except for SJP who bringed it and it is fantastic.

And if anyone sees Glenn Close tell her we need those curtains back.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know, the first impression I got when I saw SJP’s outfit was “insect”. As in shiny beetle carapace. My second thought was, “Yow, the girls are getting seriously smashed in there.” Props to her for wearing risky clothes, but I’m not a fan of this one.

I liked Stephen Colbert’s observation about Kennedy Award rainbow neck thingies — he opined that they were obviously inspired by Mork’s suspenders.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, I hate what SJP’s dress is doing to the girls.  It looks like her boobs are sprouting out of where her small intestine should be.

  • foodycat

I love Glenn Close’s dress. I want it as a lounging caftan. SJP’s dress reminds me of those hieratic portraits from the Middle Ages, which is not helped by the hair. All she needs is a wimple.

  • Anonymous

Ohhh,  No.. gotta disagree on SJP.  The dress is wearing her not the other way around.  It ages her and she looks incredibly awkward in it.  I do think the dress has dramatic impact, but she simply isn’t wearing it well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

    SJP rocked it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

I don’t know. Sarah Jessica Parker might be in danger with that dress. Some Salvation Army Santa might grab her by the upper torso and try to ring her.

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Urban Gypsy aka Tess

OMG, that’s exactly what I thought, she looks just like a bell in that thing and someone needs to ring her.  What an odd dress.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I’m so tired of SJP and her Mrs. Robinson hair.  The yogaspaniel do as well.

  • Anonymous

I disagree about SJP. Since this is the Kennedy Center Honors (not an industry event) I wonder if the attendees shouldn’t show up the honorees.  Too self-consiously attention-getting for this venue.

  • yuju ti

Not liking  SJP’s look. The proportion makes her neck look too short, and that make up makes her look like an old mean lady.

    • Anonymous

you could be right. I can barely look at this photo of her. it makes me squirm with discomfort.

  • http://twitter.com/capt_shiny Mags

    SJP looks fan-friggin-tastic!

  • http://twitter.com/KalisaHyman Kalisa Hyman

    Is Emily Blount PG?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

I hate the shape of SJP’s dress.  The shape obliterates her chest and makes her look like a four-year-old.

  • Anonymous

I’d be a bad theater queen if I didn’t point out that Laura Otis is actually Laura Osnes.

As for the clothes, I’ll give SJP a DAMN! and Glenn Close a …damn.

  • Anonymous

SJP’s dress somehow makes her look even scrawnier than usual.  It’s striking but I hate it.

  • Anonymous

Wow, SJP looks fab! That’s not often said, not by me anyhow. Glenn Close, darling, WTH were you thinking? Emily Blunt looks very pretty but I do wonder if that tiny little tummy is trying to tell us something? I don’t normally do the “is she or isn’t she” but it looks like she might be?

  • Jennifer Coleman

I’m so sorry but SJP looks like those old crochet dolls my mom’s friends used to put over the spare toilet paper rolls in the guest bath.  I like the idea of it but the silhouette’s not working for me.
Glenn Close, you are far too fierce to be even within 50 feet of that rag.

  • Anonymous

No “INs” here (maybe I’m still star struck over Shelley O’s performance at the KCH event). I have never seen Glenn Close look bad – until now. This looks like she intentionally put on 50 pounds for a role and couldn’t find anything to wear to complement her transitional bod. Yeesh. A little effort Glenn.

And not a total fan of SJP here. The high waist on that dress makes it look like her legs must be attached to her boobs.

  • Anonymous

Glenn Close looks enormous in that dress.  Is Emily Blunt heavy with child?  Because that looks like a baby bump to me.

  • Now I am The Bee

Meryl is my hero.  I love that she wore her glasses!  Really–everyone looks pretty good.  Even SJP, who usually wears the oddest stuff, looks elegant and relaxed.

  • elzatelzabelz

My one disagreement, SJP. I think that dress looks terrible on her. The skirt is way too voluminous for her frame, and the top is cut weird on her. I do not like.

    • Anonymous

I agree 100%.  In addition, I would also say the hair is not very flattering.

      • Anonymous

It looks like the dress is trying to mash down her boobs.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

Agree too. she looks like a really nice tea cozy.

  • http://twitter.com/sockandaphone Gaby

omg you quoted gfy, my heart flutters. Also theres no way SJP looks fabulous, that is one silly hair ‘do

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

You know what I love about that backdrop? The fact that it makes it incredibly easy to tell who’s taller than who on that red carpet.

I now know that Glenn Close and Meryl Streep are not the same height, as previously assumed. Lynda Carter is the tallest of them all, inching out Emily Blunt by a bumpit.

  • Anonymous

Glenn Close is wearing a very fashionable Snuggie!

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Agreed on everything except…(well you wouldn’t love me if I weren’t opinionated!):
I know it’s hard, cause you’re gay, but take a deep breath and say it: Lynda C. looks like a hooker-showgirl.
Sutton’s dress is fab. She needs help in hair and make-up but the dress doesn’t need to be longer. It’s stunning.

SJP – thank you for reminding me why I love you.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UG4ZUN6WRU57HLCAUKDFKWKCLY Allison

Sorry, uncles, I think SJP looks like she hath her dress on backwards.

SJP FTW – stunning…tip to toe.

SJP looks incredible. I with Emily Blunt would go back to red hair is looked SO good on her. i don’t know who that last girl is but I love the look apart from the shoes are minging

You’re kidding about SJP, right? She looks awful! Ugh!

Is that really the award, that multi-colored ribbon with copper clothespins stuck to it at odd angles?

Really? Love the Streep, but she’s lookin’ dowdy in that meh gown.

And, the award is mega gay and not in the good sense of the word.

Oh, GLENN!!  WTF?  I am addicted to “Damages” and think she has the coolest, understated lawyer chic wardrobe there.  This?  This is AWFUL!
Meryl says “Fuck you.  I’m Meryl Streep, YOU hit MY mark, bitches.”
    SJP… sigh… (with delight)

Wow!  I think SJP looks like a bobble-headed toilet paper cozy (in a funeral home?).
