Kate Beckinsale for Harper’s Bazaar Russia

Posted on December 21, 2011

Kate tries on a big-haired rich bitch persona and we’re not convinced it really suits her.

Kate Beckinsale for Harper’s Bazaar Russia January 2012 photographed by Katie Bleacher & Dean Everard and styled by Kira Shtranikh and Natalia Alaverdian. Hair: Adir Abergel. MakeUp: Lauren Anderson.

We love her hair like that, and for the most part, we love the clothes here, but there’s something a bit cold and off-putting about this spread. She’s not coming off particularly comfortable with the setup. Worse, her makeup here is extremely unflattering, especially in the B&W shots. She’s a lot prettier than this editorial would have you believe.

I think she’s gorgeous, but the pictures aren’t doing her face much justice. Great clothes though.

I agree. I also feel like they make her look fairly generic, but she’s really got a very striking face.

  • Rebecca Johnson

Oooof, no! These look like the blurry and unflattering rejects from a ’60s photo album.

Goodness, that 2nd B&W shot makes her look like Vicky B! I agree though, these aren’t her sort of look…

  • Anonymous

The problem is that she already looks too much like Victoria Beckam, who already OWNS the haughty upper-crust look in a much more fierce and modern way.

    • Anonymous

And her face and attitude aren’t really rich bitch…it’s more like the secretary wandering around the boss’s house, trying on the wife’s clothes…

      • P M

And had brought along her boyfriend to take pics. Which is probably why they’re so flat and amateur-looking.

      I hate Victoria Beckham more than I hate Gyn-ick Paltrow – and I rreeeeealllllllyy hate G P.

    • Terence Ng

Well, considering that she and Victoria are apparently BFFs, I imagine she probably just dove into her closet.

Could they just not afford Victoria Beckham?  And that make up in first B&W photo especially is making the poor girl look haggard!  So tragic, she’s so pretty!

  • Anonymous

I like the second, fourth and last pictures, a lot.   Agree that in the B&W her make up looks off.

Don’t like the pale lipstick on her.

She makes a much better icy vampire assassin than she does Victoria Beckham.

This feels like it should be Victoria Beckham modeling. Kate is far more beautiful than these pictures make her look.

Third photo:  Is that a rolled-up sock in your shorts, or are you just happy to see me?  Or, as Michael Kors would say, “OHmyGodthatissomeCROTCHonher!”

    • angela rose

that accounts for the shocked look on her face in that shot.

      Polterwang: the silent menace.

    • Anonymous

I definitely saw that unfortunate package suggestion as well.

I agree with Rebecca Johnson; these look like faded ’60s photos, down to the drab, washed out yellows and greens.

  • Anonymous

The bump in those shorts is unfortunate.

  • Anonymous

is it just me, or is she sporting polterwang in the hot pants shot?

    • Anonymous

i find it amazing that they photoshop and airbrush nearly every aspect of photos these days, yet the obvious polterwang faux pas passes muster…..

Some of these don’t even look like her, much less do her justice.  She is gorgeous.  This seems a bit unfair.

Nice editorial,  Great clothes, settings and lighting.  She looks GORGEOUS, but totally unlike herself. Like you guys, I’m not buying it.

  • foodycat

The cover shot makes her look like Liz Hurley, which isn’t very flattering. I’m a bit over these 60s editorials.

  • Anonymous

She looks like Jacqueline Bisset in that cover shot and like a Posh wannabe in the rest. Still, except for the poltertwang, I kind of like the 60s vibe.

  • Anonymous

She’s so gorgeous…I don’t want to say the photos are bad, b/c they aren’t, really.  But then again, if they make you not look like you and are a little unflattering to your stunning face and body, can you really call them good?

  • Anonymous

Make up lady obviously took a little trip to Kate Middletonia here. Did she realize she had the wrong Kate?

I’m just not buying this Kate Beckinsale, glamour super fem thing being pushed lately. For me her appeal has always been the little bit of girl next / door tomboy balancing the prettiness. I think it’s that mix that made her special, but it seems she and her handlers are trying to erase the girl next door tomboy part.

I’m having a mega-flashback. Hello 1966! The eye makeup’s different, but the hair, lipstick, pointy-toed stilletos and earrings are straight from that era. Personally I love updos like that.

If they wanted Victoria Beckham, they should have just hired her instead of trying to turn poor Kate Beckinsale into her.

Wow, I totally agree about the makeup – she looks really old and dull. The clothing is killa, but she isn’t rocking it.

  • Sarah Thomas

God, I really thought that was Victoria Beckham.

  • Sara__B

That 60s makeup and hair made most of us look a little bit dead and not as pretty as we really were. It’s kind of nice to see that it does that to gorgeous Kate Beckinsale, too.

  • Anonymous

They really should’ve gotten Posh to do this spread – she can bring the rich bitch like no other.

    That said, Beckinsale is lovely!

OMG am I the only person who is old enough to remember the 60′s with all those horrid up do’s and wigs/falls and white lipstick and those horrid little stiff dresses?  Can’t anyone design anything NEW?

  • Anonymous

Agreed! She doesn’t even look like herself in most of these.

  • http://profiles.google.com/laurenjeanstm Lauren St Martin

Am I the only one who thought it was Julia Roberts in the first picture? I personally think Kate looks gorgeous in these pics, but she doesn’t look like Kate.

  • Anonymous

Wow, the makeup is not doing her any favors. I actually think the whole “nude lip” trend that’s been going on for a few years now is wildly overplayed, and not nearly as flattering to most people as you’d think. To be honest, there have only been a few times where I’ve actually thought it really genuinely WORKED for someone, instead of it making them look like a weird alien with no lips. Unfortunately, Kate is not one of those lucky few who can pull it off. At least not in these photographs–she doesn’t even look like herself. If you hadn’t said “This is Kate Beckinsale”, I would have thought it was some random model, which is a shame.

Was this shoot intended for Victoria Beckham? The clothes are great (except for the “polterwang” shorts), but she looks very out of her element.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

OMG I went through the entire editorial thinking it was her!

      • Anonymous

I thought the same thing.  It doesn’t really look like Kate Beckinsale.  It’s not bad, just not her.

      • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

        omg me too…!

  • Call me Bee

Well–they sure are enamored with the mid-sixties out there in Russki-land, aren’t they?  These do look like someone’s old photo album.  If that’s what they were going for–then fine.  If not, then meh.

  • Anonymous

this editorial would &, in fact, does have me believe that theyve added streisand to monroe & twiggy & thats all we’re gonna get for the next decade or so, those of us who will be here to see it. then again, if madonna dies they might add her.

  • Anonymous

Am I the only one who sees this as an homage to Audrey Hepburn – particularly in ‘Two for the Road’?  No one can pull that off well, no one.  Kate gives it a good try, but impossible to do.  Audrey was an original.

  • Anonymous

I think these pics reveal her mediocrity.

Picture in the green jacket and white sun glasses:  she looks like Mondo!

You guys, I just got back last night from a work trip in Moscow - The whole country is “a bit cold and off-putting”, so that just keeps things authentic, you know?  (Actually I like it very much there and the people can be very warm and happy - but it gets damned cold and right now it doesn’t get light in the day time until about 10 am and it gets dark again around 4.  Very depressing, unless you are a billionaire.)  There is a strong “rich and proper” vibe about Moscow that I think is accurately reflected in these shots.

So awkward. It’s like Bad Acting In Great Clothes. What happened? How could she not pull this off? It can’t be that hard.

  • http://twitter.com/nothinbutgenius Veronika K.

she is generic that’s why she looks generic. Pretty but generic. blah.
