In or Out: Viola Davis in BCBG Max Azria

Posted on December 09, 2011

Miss Viola brought some color-blocking to the proceedings.

And we’re not sure if we like it or not. As attention-getting dresses go, it’s not bad. And we do like the colors themselves. We’re just not in love with the blocking or the silhouette. The latter makes this look a little bit like a housecoat. We’re not digging the uneven hem either.  The shoes look like afterthoughts. And since we’re on a roll here, we might as well admit that while we normally love her hair, it looks a little helmet-y. We’re sad now. We don’t think we’ve ever had so many negative things to say about one of her looks.

Vote Now!

IN! It’s bold and different!

OUT! I can’t unsee the housecoat.

In other opinionated news, the minions agreed with us that Jessica Biel’s New Year’s Eve-appropriate dress was an IN, but they did NOT agree with us that Zac Efron screwed up the detailing on his suit, and voted him IN as well.

Out.  The lines are hitting her at weird spots and angles.

    • Christina Brennan

I’m not loving this look.  It seems kind of too youthful?  I think it’s mostly because of those shoes, which I hate.  So, OUT.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_66KPZ36LMHMRQOX3HIJGHRNNUA MandyM

Not flattering on her skin tone or her body type. OUT

    • Anonymous

Love her, have always hated her hair. Wish she’d go natural or at least try a less aging style.

The dress is meh. And the photography seems a bit harsh, too. I don’t think she’s lit properly. Out…

    • Anonymous

She looks kind of terrible here, but it’s not the dress’s fault.  It’s so weird because I typically think of her as someone whose sheer presence automatically elevates any outfit, but here she just looks kind of sad and dreary.  Like her heart’s not in it.

      • Anonymous

I’m blaming the backdrop.  It’s bringing out the lavender undertones of her skin, which is pairing with the grey panel, making it grey everywhere.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

Boobs apparently don’t go with that dress.

      OUT.

      • Anonymous

The lines on her fall nicely on her curves–much better I think than on the skinny model.

    • Anonymous

i also think the colors are generally uncomplimentary and wash her out… speaking of: definitely OUT on this one. nothing here is working for me.

    • Anonymous

Out. “Housecoat” was my first coherent thought.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I don’t think the fit is very flattering, but the main issue here is with the color blocking. If the entire dress was the cadet/midnight blue that’s around the neck, or even the yellow on the sides, I think she would look stunning, despite the fit. I don’t know if it is her skin tone, or something in particular about her facial features, but I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever seen where color makes such a difference–she looks absolutely incredible in solid, rich colors.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

It’s not a good dress. I can’t think of anyone who could really pull it off. An OUT for the dress, and a cookie for the brave Viola, who tried.

    • http://twitter.com/YouShoIsUgly Chauncey L.

Her make up is beat for the cheap seats!!! Werk

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

Oh..I don’t like this.  Linear color blocking seems especially odd with a lot of very round clevage.  It’s just an ugly dress.  And ugly shoes.  Out.

      • Anonymous

I agree; this dress seems to want sylphlike androgyny.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

I don’t love the shape or hem, but I do love the color-blocking and the way the colors look against her skin.  I also like the shoes.  IN.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

It doesn’t do a whole lot for her shape — she looks pretty blocky here.

      A reluctant OUT.

That dress just looks so… angry! Out.

Out – this dress gives her cleavage without any other  shape to her body.

It’s not flattering on her. OUT.  (she’s lovely though)

    • Anonymous

Out. Love her, but it isn’t a good dress on her.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  This dress was made for somebody with no curves.  She has curves.  She’s look awesome in something form fitting.  This thing just looks like a bunch of misshap rags hanging from her.

    • Anonymous

Out. This dress does nothing for her.

    • Grace Ritt

Out. It takes away her natural shape. But I give her some credit for taking a risk.

    • Anonymous

Out.  Her skin and her makeup look fantastic, though.

    • Anonymous

So In — that smile can carry off anything.

    • Sara__B

OUT, but not awful. The dress is too loose and low on top, and too tight through the hips. Her posture and expressions read “uncomfortable” to me. Perhaps she realized too late it wasn’t the dress for her.

    • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

OUT. The dress is too baggy. Also, she would look better if she wasn’t hunched over. Posture is important!

    • Anonymous

Barely IN. It’s not a shape that flatters her figure (not made for a woman with bosoms), but I don’t think it crosses the line into horrendous so I’m not knocking off too many points. I think the hair looks good, though, make-up looks fantastic, bracelet seems cute (could have used earrings) ,shoes are fine, and I love the colors and the risk-taking.

      • Anonymous

I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t dislike the bronzish shoe with the yellow panels and topaz ring.

    • R. L.

Makeup is great.  Hair is okay.  Dress and shoes are a no but not overwhelmingly no.

    • Anonymous

Hair, makeup and the beautiful Viola are great; that dress is just plain ugly, ill-fitting and OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

Love her, but “out”. It IS looking a little too housecoat-y, and the shoes are all wrong. And her hair could use, I don’t know, a messier look, a little spikier maybe.

    • Anonymous

      Out :( I’m sorry Viola.

    • Anonymous

      out

    • Anonymous

It is bold and different, and I don’t see a housedress. And I kind of like the dress (though not the floaty flappy yellow thing). I think this is more a “Honey, This Isn’t Your Dress.” So. . . out.

    • MilaXX

Aw da-yum, I love her but I don’t like this dress  & I hate the shoes. If it wasn’t a mullet hem I could have given it a small IN, but bad dress+bad shoes = OUT.

    • Anonymous

OUT  That dress is really unflattering on both Viola and the model.  The color combination reminds me of a tennis outfit.

    • foodycat

OUT – it’s not an attractive dress, the fit is odd and I don’t like the mullet hem. She has killer curves and this is not the dress for her. Also, I think her hair is Supremes adjacent.

      • Anonymous

        “Supremes adjacent” –LOL

    • Terence Ng

      What a fugly dress.

    • Anonymous

IN because it’s a breakfast event and she looks understated, chic and effortless… and I like the shoes with it, camel and navy always look great together

    • Anonymous

I am not loving it, but I don’t think it qualifies for an out. So I say it’s barely an IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

      Out.
I think the dress was not made for boobs, and overall the fit is not working for her. I think the dress was created for a shapeless toothpick. I do like her makeup, even though it’s a bit heavily applied. And her hair…well, it doesn’t look like a wig. How’s that for a compliment?

      • http://twitter.com/baxterbartley Becky Bartley

Completely Agree – this dress would only fit right if you took away her boobs & hips, and if you did that she wouldn’t be Viola anymore.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

I refuse to vote Miss Davis out, so I will give Max Azria the OUT instead.

It’s sad even on the model.

      OUT

    • Judy_J

I hate the hemline, and the way the colors are blocked makes it appear that she’s got an apron pinned on backwards.  Out.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  When I saw her, I said to myself, “That dress doesn’t look good on her.”  Then I scrolled down and saw the model and modified my statement to, “That dress doesn’t look good on *anybody.*”  Unflattering shape, color, hem, shoes — you name it, it’s just wrong.  The colors look kind of sickly and make her look…weird.  I can’t explain it as well as others, but maybe it’s the pale colors against her gorgeous skin — totally wrong.  Some people are made for color, and she’s one of them.

I appreciate her effort to be edgy, but it did NOT work in this case.  Definitely OUT.

    • Anonymous

love her, but that dress does not love her boobs…OUT

    • Anonymous

If this were reworked to be a dress w a nipped waist and a little flare in a regular hem skirt, it would work (and the hair would compliment better)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  I do believe the dress would not look great on anyone, since it looks just as bad on the model.  The shoes are not helping her in anyway.

    • Anonymous

You know, that fug-ugly dress looks better on her than on the runway model…but it’s still an OUT for Southern Belle Helmet Head hair, silly putty shoes, and…most of all…a fug-ugly dress.

    • Anonymous

avant garde dress made by someone who has no real interest in making anything avant garde but understands that current trends declaim he has no choice. i dont know why she’s wearing it.

      edited to add:
declaim is the wrong word but my head is just not finding the right one.

    • Rand Ortega

It doesn’t fit her upper body (which is spectacular!) properly. The color blocking should flatter her waist but instead makes her look boxy. A possible fit issue as well. Some yellow diamonds at the ears or wrist would have added some polish. Not loving the shoes. Maybe a bright red Louboutin or a silver strappy? The hair & makeup are pretty.

    • Anonymous

agreed on loving the colors, but agreed on everything else as well. out!

    • Anonymous

Out, but not because of her – because of the dress.  Those shapeless dresses seem to only work on women who have no curves, or at least minimal ones.  Maybe I am not schooled, but just seems so.

    • Anonymous

its too bad its NOT a coat, cuz it would be more interesting if it were. i like her shoe choice though! Unfortunately this is an out for me as well… for A for effort

Love her but this dress hides her curves. It makes her look like a high school principal who has to give a presentation to the School Board. All she needs are the glasses on the chain.

I don’t even find this flattering on the model – OUT.

    • Anonymous

It’s a very close thing. I can imagine the dress moving well and her pulling it off with shoulders back and power of personality. But it’s a still shot, the emotion’s not reaching out of the picture and I am left noticing that maybe it could fit a bit better and the shoes don’t seem quite the right color.

      Lower case out.

    • Anonymous

It doesn’t fit very well and I hate the hem.  She doesn’t appear to like it much either.

Out.  The dress doesn’t work with her curves – needs a belt/sash/something, because the blocking & silhouette are making her look short-waisted & dumpy & she’s definitely not a dumpy little woman.  And I think her hair usually looks helmet-y.  And the shoes are both an afterthought and look a little odd next to her skin tone.  Her face looks beautiful, as usual, though.

Well, I can see I’m in the minority here, but I think it looks better on her than the model and I kinda like her hair too in a retro- 70’s kind of way.  IN.  (not digging the shoes though)

    • Anonymous

The problem is this: the yellow on the model barely shows; it makes the model’s waist look teeny-tiny. On the actress, the yellow panels show all the way down; it has the opposite effect, making her look extra wide right down the sides. If the panels had been dark, I wonder if it would’ve had the same effect? But then, the dress wouldn’t look freshy-freshy, it’d look somber and grounded. So…no. The math just doesn’t add up.

    • Jessica Stone

Must disagree with what looks like the majority here. I think she looks great, and she rocks that dress much better than the model. In.

    • bloodshothalfblind

the dress is fine.  it doesn’t do anything for her, though, and just ends up looking cheap.  she deserves a better dress.  and better lighting.  and a better wig.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

It does not flatter her like it should, and part of the problem is her cleavage.  It changes the way the dress fits, and not for the better.

I think this is a case where the dress is wearing her. She’s so beautiful, and full figured. I’d prefer to see her in something that accentuates her curves, rather than just kind of tossed over them. I think though –that the dress probably moves really well. It’s a great dress, just not the right one for her.

The layering of her hair gives it quite a bit of texture. I wouldn’t say helmet-y at all. The blocking complements her figure nicely, but I do want to even out that hem. I love the shoes. To summarize: the hem sucks, but otherwise, IN.

this really isnt my favorite bcbg maxazria look, and im a big fan/sales associate there. i dont like it on the model and i dont like it on her, i dont like the color blocking or the length of it. but i def def hate those shoes with that dress, they look like cheap jessica simpson shoes that she randomly found.

I fear this is one of those times where the dress just works on a model’s body and not a real woman’s.  Just not her dress. I hate to say it but…OUT.

That dress is ugly on the model.  It isn’t going to get better on a human being.  Out.
