In or Out: Leelee Sobieski in Azzedine Alaïa

Posted on December 15, 2011

We don’t get to use the phrase, “in Azzedine Alaïa” in our red carpet posts enough, come to think of it. It’s nice to see it when it happens because you can always count on something interesting.

It’s also nice to see starlets dressed like international spies on the red carpet. That’s always fun.

Leelee Sobieski in Azzedine AlaiaLeelee Sobieski attends the premiere of “The Iron Lady” in NYC in an Azzedine Alaïa dress.

We think that dress is amazingly cute, given how deceptively plain it comes across at first glance. Sure, it comes off a little like a cocktail waitress in The Matrix, but we love the scalloped edges and the puffiness of the skirt. We think it might have been a little more interesting with the neck unzipped a couple of inches, but she’s the kind of gal who can rock a Matrix-y high collar. She likes to take things to a severe level in the styling. That’s not how we would have gone here. An open neckline, some jewelry, more dramatic hair and a kicky pair of shoes would have been our way. Those boots are fierce, but they’re totally wrong for this dress.

Vote Now!

IN! Simple, but slightly edgy chic!

OUT! Oh please. Emma Peel could kick her ass with one eyebrow flick.

Yesterday’s votes were as follows: Hillary Swank’s off-season dress was voted IN (by a hair) and Meryl Streep’s enormo-sleeved blouse was voted OUT.

    IN!  She’s Natasha Fatale.

  • Anonymous

You know she’s supposedly a down-low dominatrix for hire, don’t you?

    • Sobaika Mirza

You have to be shitting me.

    • Anna Maria Diamanti

I’ve heard that as well (that is, I’ve read it as a frequent blind item guess on various celebrity trash sites).

As for the outfit, love it head to toe.

  • Anonymous

In! I don’t really have anything to add, though. I especially love the minimalist styling.

  • Sara__B

It takes more than just zipping on a designer dress to look special. Some people take an ordinary dress and elevate it to extraordinary. She’s taken a designer dress and brought it down to ordinary. She looks fine. Nothing special. Kind of boring. Not Emma Peel worthy, for sure.

  • foodycat

OUT the zip down the front makes it look like a wetsuit, combined with a skating skirt and the boots don’t work at all.

  • Anonymous

Ok. So. I hate pointy boots.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Me too! About a year or two ago they were ubiquitous and I’m not ready to see them again.

  • Linde Hoff

In, in, in!!  I love this, and she’s one of my favorites.  How refreshing to not see boobs squishing out and a vagina-length skirt!!

  • Anonymous

    IN by a mile.

  • Anonymous

Barely in for me. The dress is interesting and fits her well, but I think it looks a little blah for a red carpet appearance.

  • Anonymous

IN but that zipper lies oddly

  • Anonymous

If RC gals are going to insist on wearing these little-girl dresses, they need to find more interesting footwear. I think booties would work better than high boots. Everyone needs to take a page from Helena Bonham Carter, who’s been doing strange little dresses forever.  And she does booties better than anyone.

  • Jane Morris

I, too, thought of Emma Peel. But in a good way. IN

  • BerlinerNYC

In. Love it. It’s what Kalinda Sharma would wear to a formal event. It is weird and memorable. Brava.

  • Fifi LaRoux

I’m gonna go with out on this one. It’s just not working for me. I love the boots, just not with this dress, seeing as they belong on my feet.

  • Anonymous

There certainly are things I would have done differently were I the stylist, but she looks good and she looks like herself. IN.

    • Meira Niibori

Exactly what I was going to say.  IN from me too.

  • Anonymous

Love it all.  Love the color, love the scallops, love the fit, love the length, love the boots.  Don’t love the hair, so ok, don’t love it all.  But love enough that she is IN.

  • Anplica Fiore

In – although it’s a shame she can’t afford to get her hair done.

  • Lauren Maier

Oh please, TLo.  She looks awesome, full stop.  IN.

    • Anonymous

  • Christina Brennan

IN!  I even like the boots.

  • Joyce VG

Is she wearing it backwards?  IN because I like the style of the dress.

    • Anonymous

From the back view, it looks like it was cut to wear this way. The neck would be all wrong if she turned it around.

A subdued in from me, because she could have put a little more effort in the look. I’m totally jealous of the boots though.

  • Anonymous

IN. Even with the gym hair. It actually looks good from the front…but when she turns and you see the sloppy wisps and pieces, the look almost falls apart. I think her polished makeup saves it.

  • Laura Schultz

I’m going to vote IN, but I do agree that cooler shoes or cooler boots were in order.

    • Anonymous

      Totally agree.

  • MilaXX

IN, even though I could see your vision working, she looks great

  • Terence Ng

I like it more when her arms are down. The effect is so much better.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Girl, that is SO your dress, but that is SO not the right styling and accessorizing for said dress. I can’t find a single good choice in the execution, so while I love her in the dress and want to give it an in, I’ve got to go OUT.

  • Anonymous

IN.  Love the dress, love the boots, though I agree they don’t quite go together.  Still, she looks good.

  • Mags

Compared to how she normally looks, she is fierce as shit in this. I’m giving her an IN for effort.

  • Samantha Irene

Out. Hate the boots with it.

  • Anonymous

    IN! Loving the scalloped edges.

  • Anonymous

Hmm I just don’t know.  I guess it’s ok.  She doesn’t look horrible.  OK, “in” but a little “in” not a big one.

  • Anonymous

In! I love the high collar and wouldn’t advise unzipping it. Not loving the “just went jogging” hair though.

  • Jessica Goldstein

Totally get your point on the boots. But I love that dress so much I just see right past them. IN.

  • marlie

IN! The styling could use some work, but the dress is great.

  • Amelia Logan

    an awhata??

  • Lauren St Martin

In! Everything in the title is fun to say, and doesn’t make me cringe at all, and she looks fun, fresh and different. Love Love Love it.

  • Anonymous

The dress is nice but she gets and OUT. The boots are awful. I mean, I have heard that she does dominatrix work on the side, but this is the red carpet, missy! She looks like she’s rocking a hefty bag.

  • Anonymous

IN. That dress is superfantastic. I don’t hate the boots but I would have preferred a proper shoe. But really, this is the best I’ve ever seen her look.

  • Anonymous

IN! And I think the collar should stay zipped up.

  • Vickie Lord

    …makes me miss Helen Hunt…

    • Claudia Gilbert

FOR REAL!  Every time I see this girl I think of Helen Hunt!

  • Anonymous

OUT.  This just looks bad.  The hair is half-assed (I swear, mine looks better after I get home from the gym) and the boots are all wrong.  If you are going for “severe” on the styling, then looking like your hair is falling down and pulled up at the last minute in the car is not the way to go.  This dress needs help from a little more jewelry, not less.

  • natalia h

    I like it!

  • Anonymous

IN!  Love the whole look, including the boots. And the dress is terrific on her–simple and chic.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

In.  I think she looks great.  Love the armholes.

  • Anonymous

    Cute dress. IN.

  • Anonymous

I love the dress, not so much the boots, but she looks fab. I actully love the hair like that; she has striking features that really stand out with her hair pulled back. I also like the zipped up neckline, but I think she needs some dramatic earrings with that hair and that neckline. Maybe a big cocktail ring or a chunky bracelet?

Ugh, somebody needs to bring back the Liz Taylor-style dramatic jewels. Speaking of which, they’re selling like hotcakes! Wish I could afford a piece.

  • Anonymous

OUT. A great dress, but needed better accessories and hair.

  • Brian @ PWYJudges

I’m kinda loving the look here. She is about to kick someone’s ass. IN!

  • MandyJane

In, but should have worn different shoes.

  • Kathleen B

IN! I think she looks hot

  • Elena

  • Judy_J

In.  I even like the boots with this dress.

  • kim bunchalastnames

that dress is so great that iono — i don’t think there’s a way it could NOT be fierce.

  • Sammi M

IN – I like it! I agree with your styling suggestions, but I also think she looks great. The dress is so chic that it’s not ruined by the boots.

  • Anonymous

IN, but this look really needed some edgy, sexy hair. what’s with all the half-assed hair on the RC lately?

  • Anonymous

I’m giving an In.  But would earrings have been so awful?

  • Dave

Emma Peel could definitely kick her ass with the well-timed eyebrow raise, but still, I have to vote IN.  Leelee can pull of the edgy.

  • Anonymous

She looks like she’s just trying the dress on with whatever shoes (boots), hair and make-up she had on when she stopped by the mall.  She’ll look great once she gets it all put together.   Out for now.

  • Aplomb Pomilio

IN. Love the dress and she somehow looks edgy and adorable all at once.

  • Anonymous

Girl is letting the dress do all the work; that styling is weak. She needed big femme fatale hair (pulled back severely is not flattering on her face, sorry), and some color in the face and the feet. Out.

  • Anonymous

OUT. That scalloping looks like my Nana made it.

  • Anonymous

In. Uncluttered styling makes this fresh and fierce!

  • Anonymous

    IN, and excellent to boot!

  • Liana Brooks

OUT – It’s dull. I hate the neckline. I hate the hemline. There’s nothing good here except for the texture. You praise a COUCH for texture, not a dress.

  • Anonymous

  • Shawn EH

    IN! All grown up.

  • Anonymous

    IN! She looks great.

  • Anonymous

    The boots ruin it, OUT

  • rynerman

In.  I didn’t really expect to like this, but was surprised to find I did like it.

  • Anonymous

She used to look like a young Helen Hunt.  She doesn’t at all here.  The dress and the boots are cute, just not together.

  • Anonymous

    In. I love it.

  • Anonymous

Out. The dress is great & great on her. The boots are cool.

The boots don’t go with the dress. If it had sleeves, well, maybe. But it doesn’t.

  • Erin Leahy

Honestly? out.  she took a cute cool dress and made is boring as hell. and those boots are awful.  For shame!

  • Anonymous

That dress is awesome, but everything else is awful. IN only for the dress.

  • Anonymous

    I’m diggin it. IN

  • Anonymous

I like her minimalist style.  IN.

  • Aly Light

  • Anna Tree

Love the dress. Hate the boots. Nonetheless, IN

  • Anonymous

IN. I have no problem at all with a fierce Matrix spybitchsassin.

  • CQAussie

I love that dress but she ruined the look with the boots.  Nonetheless….IN….but only just.

  • P M

Out. I’m not getting Emma Peel, I’m feeling school marm.

Am I the only one who recalls the quote from ‘Clueless’ every time I hear ‘Azzedine Alaïa’?
“Who is that?” …. “He’s a very important designer!!”

    • Genevieve LeFluer

Yup. I literally quote it every time I see an Alaïa post/collection . It’s an Alaia.” “An A-what-a?” “He’s like a totally important designer.” “And I will totally shoot you in the head!” (Yes I know I am a total dork.) Also IN. :-)

  • Anonymous

Out.  The scalloped edges conflict with the severeness.

  • Mary Stone

Ha-uge IN. I love everything about it.  I think that with the neck opening unzipped, the scalloping on the top edge might have been less impactful/apparent. I’ll even give a pass to the uninteresting ponystub hair.

  • Anonymous

IN.  Agree about the boots, but love the fierceness of the rest.

  • Anonymous

This is working for me.  IN.

  • Anonymous

Just barely IN. The boots bite and the hair is bad but the dress has just enough going for it to keep her in.

  • Anonymous

I like the dress, but not with these boots.  Her hair is really crappy, but somehow the overall look is sort of attractive.

  • Anonymous

    Super-fine, all of it. IN

  • Anonymous

    In, love the edging.

  • Sara Munoz

I’m going with IN. Don’t think I’ve ever seen her look so good!

  • Anonymous

love me some emma peel! also her name – stands for ‘M Appeal’ – male appeal. glorious!

  • Anonymous

In! But I will need her to wear different shoes if this dress ever reemerges

  • Merneith

Out. Like the dress, but it needs accessories other than those boots.

  • Anonymous

In. I think this is the best I’ve ever seen her. Even with the hair.

  • mcglory13

In, though the boots are wrong with the dress.

  • MandyM

Love it except for the hair! IN

  • Ally Monge

    Love it. IN

  • Anonymous

Well, Emma Peel COULD kick her ass quite easily but I still like this look so IN!!!!

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

No, I luuuuv the boots. She looks amazing. Like you said, a seemingly plain dress that is actually stunning and original. Love it!

  • Judy S

IN, among other things because it clearly fits really well. Looking at some of your other posts today, that counts for a lot.

  • Anonymous

In!  I would like to have seen opaque tights, but the boots are pretty cute with the dress and bling would have looked weird.

  • Anonymous

IN.  LOVE the dress…she looks tough!  I would rather have seen some not-so-tall boots, though, and maybe boots in a color just for some fun.

  • Anonymous

    Yawn, out.

  • Anonymous

    Dominatrix hotness! In!

  • bloodshothalfblind

IN but i hate it w/ those cheap boots.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

A great dress undone by disappointing styling and yoga hair. Out.

  • Jill Tracy

    IN! she looks great!

  • Rachel

    OUT. Blah.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, and I actually think the minimalist styling goes well with it. The boots look super cheap to me, though (uh, not in the hookery way, in the Payless way). Gonna give her an IN — with notes to wear proper footwear next class.

  • Anonymous

great dress, feel the same way you do about the boots. but the dress is so great that i think it carries the day.

ps. even w/ all the wonderful pairs of boots available in this world today. that may say something about how much i’ve always really loved alaïa.

  • Anonymous

I’m so on-the-fence that I’m not going to vote. I love the dress.  A lot.  Almost enough.  But the boots are wrong, the hair is ugly, and the rest is missing.

  • Anonymous

Emma Peel *could* totally kick her ass, no question there. But I still like it enough to give her an in.

  • Abigail W Stevens

  • Abigail W Stevens

  • Praggya R. Barretto

Out. The boots totally ruin this look.

  • Anonymous

    Totally IN, she looks fierce!

  • Anonymous

IN. Love her. I want this dress, and da boots.

  • Rachel Lee

Nice dress, poor detailing. I don’t like the zip down the front very much. Out.

  • Anonymous

    IN. I love it, honestly.

  • Advaita Waikar

I wish she has something more, accessory wise. But she looks nice. IN.

  • Anonymous

super out. hate the boots here.

  • Anonymous

Those boots are totally wrong for the dress. For me, it’s really hard to get past the styling, which I think ruined what could be a super-cute outfit. OUT.

  • Anonymous

In. But just because the dress is really cute, the styling is a disaster: hair, boots, all wrong. What a shame, I think she could look amazing.

  • RzYoung

IN, i like this a lot, i like her a lot. The hair’s shit though :)

  • Kelley Comfort

Out. No effort put in for hair and make up or accessories. I do not reward the lazy with an in.

  • Anonymous

Wrong to pair the boots with the outfit, but the dress really is cute and suits her style.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  I can’t with the boots/hose and a sleeveless dress.  I always think it looks ridiculous.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

In, I would completely wear this exactly as is, with the addition of bracelets and earrings.  No necklace, though.

  • R. L.

Very IN.  I love it and she’s rocking it.

  • Mary McClelland

Yeah I love it sans boots and hair. IN.

  • Anonymous

Well, Emma Peel could totally kick her ass, but I’m giving her an IN anyway. I love a deceptively plain/severe dress with a fierce pair of boots!

  • Emily

    In.  She looks awesome.

  • Anonymous

IN! She looks fab and I LOVE the dress, and even like the severe styling.  But a missed opportunity not to opt for a colorful or well-patterned boot – with the stark simplicity that choice would have turned this look into a home run for me.

  • Anonymous

IN Smart, dorky girl dressing.  Fits her to a T.

  • Charles Purdy

IN! She’s looking dramatic and kind of chic. Agree that the boots are blech, though.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

    Perfection.  Precise.  Love.  IN

  • Ana Cedillo

so OUT! what minimalist styling? the zipper is so bad, the zig zag sleeves are bad, why couldnt she do anything to her hair? and the boots are awful

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

    IN, it’s refreshing

  • Anonymous

NO ONE could best Emma Peel, but credit to her for trying something different! In.

  • Anonymous

In – I actually really like the severity of the collar – she made good choices with the hair and lack of earrings.  I wish she’s worn a bracelet and the boots are not a good pairing, but it’s interesting and suits her overall.

  • Anonymous

I *love* the dress, but I can’t get past how bad the boots look with it.  Ruins the whole effect.  Out.

  • Daniel Wheeler
