Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Scarlett Johansson in Proenza Schouler

Posted on December 15, 2011

Scarlett, sweetie, we don’t know who convinced you that retro-’40s/’50s styles were just the thing for you…

… but trust us when we say, they don’t have your best interests at heart.

This is a really cute little outfit that, unfortunately, neither suits her nor fits her correctly. She absolutely needed to go up a size, but even then, we don’t think she would have rocked the look. And we can’t with that hair. It’s a very cute retro style for the right kind of girl, but it looks absolutely terrible on her. Does nothing to frame her face or set off her coloring. It just looks severe and unflattering on her.

Scar, if you’re picking these outfits out yourself, it’s time to stop with the DIY styling and start interviewing pros for the position.

    She NEVER wears her dress!

    • maybe she’s afraid if she does Isaac Mizrahi will grab her boob again…. here she looks like she just got out of the pool and put a towel around her waist…

  • The hair is a disaster.  I don’t think the outfit is as bad as you guys think.  With better hair (and if she had gone up a size) it may have worked.

    • Also, look at where the seam (between the alligator print top and the green bottom) sits on the model.  Then look at ScarJo.  She is wearing a much higher-waisted skirt than the model.  Choosing to wear this outfit with the skirt that high on her waist was also not a good idea.

      • Anonymous

Yes! I hadn’t noticed that but you are absolutely right. It makes all the difference in the world. That and the skirt is too small (or her hips are too hip-shaped) and the skirt gaps open in front instead of lying smoothly.

        • I think they just took it in, assuming it was suppose to hit at the waist. It screws up the line of the top, though, because the little belt on the top looks messy half-tucked into the skirt like that.

      • I think they’re two separate pieces, and instead of wearing the top over the skirt, she tucked it in, which is definitely doing her no favors.
I don’t think it would have really worked for her, either way. The bare neck and shoulders and arms just really doesn’t work with the severe hair and makeup… and that top is kind of hiddy.

    • Anonymous

I think the hair *might* work for her if she went for an all-out 40’s dress. So that her shoulders are covered. But here, and in the one the other day, it is so incredibly wrong.

      • Anonymous

The hair is crying out for either a suit (which can look killer if done right) or evening wear. You have to go all the way with a look like that.

  • Anonymous

That skirt looks like a towel wrapped around the waist (both on the model and ScarJo). I can’t unsee it!!

  • Anonymous

And the Scarlett Johansson Hug Tour ’11 continues.

  • Anonymous

I am completely astounded by how someone who looks absolutely KILLER in a faux leather catsuit manages (and permits herself) to look like this in public.

How? Why??? I am so perplexed. She is so beautiful, and yet… nope.

    • Chuck Testa!
(Sorry. I can’t see the word “nope” without hearing “Chuck Testa!” in my mind anymore.)

And I’m with you on being perplexed about this styling.

      • Anonymous

LOL. My son and always pop in the “Nope, it’s Chuck Testa!” and crack each other up. God bless the internet.

      • Anonymous

Would you believe me if I said that’s what I had in mind when I wrote it? Because… it’s totally the case!

      • Anonymous

hehe had to google that….I learn so much here at TLo International…

      • Anonymous

Love it! I just Googled Chuck Testa, too. I really love the disclaimer at the end that “Chuck Testa does not taxidermize pets.”

  • Terence Ng

    Oh NO…! 🙁

  • Sobaika Mirza

This girl is so beautiful and has a such a great body. She’s famous enough (and isn’t she the face of D&G?) that people must be throwing clothes at her to wear for free just to get out of bed in the morning. NO EXCUSES FOR LOOKING SHITTY.

    • I know! Its not doing her tits any justice and she has a pooch. Girl should know how to hide/camo her pooch. Its like accentuating her pooch. Not acceptable. Somehow its reminding me of that drew barrymore movie “never been kissed.” Its like what josie grossie would wear on a first date. Not good.

  • I think she’s pissed no one came to her for a Marilyn biopic and she’s trying to prove she could do it, ala Sean Young wanting to be Catwoman.

  • Anonymous

Seated, the outfit seems to work. In motion (her head, not that shellacked ‘do), the hair is hideous.

  • iCouture

This might have looked better if she hadn’t gained weight recently.  As most girls know, when you gain a few lbs, you go up a size, its not rocket science Scar.  I’m sick of this hairdo on her too.

  • Anonymous

Oh, sweetie. I am not sure why I root for her–I don’t particularly love her or her work–but I want her to look good, for whatever reason. PLEASE CHANGE SOMETHING IN THIS EQUATION, SCARJO. I want only the best for you.

  • Judy_J

The only plausible excuse I can come up with is that she has no mirrors in her house, and relies on someone else (someone else with very little taste) to dress her and do her hair and makeup.  I’m sure that when she saw this on television, she threw her hands up in horror and fired those who did this to her.  Right, Scarlett?  Right?…….um, right?

  • Did she tuck the top into the skirt, or was it made without a dropped waistline? I can’t really tell from the model if it’s a one piece dress or a skirt and strapless top. Regardless, a girl with any kind of hips is not going to be able to wear that skirt successfully.

    • It looks like she just tucked in the top.

  • G

What happened to her boobs?  Her beautiful shape… I remember Isaac Mizrahi practically drooling at the sight of her in that red dress at the Golden Globes… but now she is all frumpy and middle aged in shape.  And that hair does nothing for her, and yes,  that dress is horrific.

  • MilaXX

The outfit is pretty bad on it’s own and looks even worse in comparison to the model where you see it’s a pencil skirt and not an A line cut. I also think that hair ages her horribly.

  • Anonymous

Her posture, lately, speak volumes.  I don’t think she feels confident/sexy.  Maybe it’s the divorce.  Maybe it’s the nudie pics.  Maybe it’s the bloat.  Whatever it is, I hope she gets her mojo back.  Let’s start a campaign, even:  Mojo 4 Scarjo!

  • Anonymous

Oy vey. That hair is dreadful. So is the rest of it, but the hair.

  • Anonymous

Where did her boobs go? Wasn’t she fairly voluptuous in that area? Did she lend them to someone?

    • They’re still there… just much less noticeable in all the horror.  Plus if she has gained weight, they won’t look as big because they’ll lack the teeny waist for comparison.

  • Anonymous

she looks a frumptastic, lumpy mess in that dress…and that Andrew Sisters hair is doing her no favours…stop it!

  • Anonymous

That is just sad. She needs a friend to intervene, stat.

  • Anonymous

Agree on all counts.  She looks so much better with softer, looser hair.  And honestly, I’m worrying that the towel-skirt is going to come undone. And it’s an ugly color. Which doesn’t go with the top at all. Which makes her look chubby. And I realize that It Has Been Decreed that white shoes after Labor Day are fine.  But white peep-toes and a sleeveless…er…topless…top in December in New York?

Fix the hair first.  Then get busy with the clothes.  Because, honestly, Scarlett, you look 20 years older (and not in a good way) and also kinda chip.

  • Anonymous

a vintage bathing suit paired with a sarong = more WWII cheesecake. I’m sure every straight male in the place thought she looked fantastic, but from a style point of view — FAIL.

  • Anonymous

Is it possible that we’ve been collectively brainwashed into thinking she’s beautiful and now the effect is being reversed? Because I’ve seen nary a hint of those supposed killer looks for ages. Egad!

  • Anonymous

More like girl that’s not your look.

  • Rand Ortega

    Dear Scarlett:
Dita Von Teese called: Even though you tried to steal her look, she doesn’t want it back because of what you did to it.

  • Oh my… that is just sad and tragic.  As much as I Irrationally Hate ScarJo, I wouldn’t wish that upon her.  The girl is certainly by no means overweight, and the way that thing is pulling and bulging screams “I GAINED 20 LBS!”… and if she gained any at all, it was closer to 5.

And that hair makes her face look chubby.  Which it isn’t.  But combined with the too-tight clothes (and weird waist strip from the other day) these looks are really trying to convince the world that she has gained a lot of weight.  Honey, even if you DID, that is not something you show off post-divorce.

When you have a public split, you do NOT leave the house looking less than Iman-level fabulous.  Trust me, it’s only going to make it worse if you do.  No matter how bad you feel, make the effort.

  • Anonymous

She needs to lie down before she hurts herself.

  • Is it just me or is the silhouette awkward on both her and the model? It makes both of those twigs look slightly stumps-ville.

  • Yup. Love the top, hate the bottom, no on the hair.

  • I’m wondering if she’s being considered for, or considering herself for, a role that requires a 50’s tough-doll look. If she sports fake swallow tattoos or comes up with a roller derby name next, I’ll really be wondering. (Oh wait- what’s that on her right arm? Has she always had that?)

I think the 40’s pin curl glam does her a solid much more than this look.

  • Anonymous

I will never understand why these people need to have nude photos of themselves on their phones anyway.  Can’t she just strip off and look in a mirror any time she wants to?  And this outfit – my god Girl, what were you thinking?  It could not be less flattering, and those shoes! Yikes.  But the real crime is that hair.  It would look pretty stupid on almost anyone, but on her it emphasizes the fact that she has no visible bone structure and it makes her nose look huge.  And since I’m venting, I also don’t like that pouf hairdo she often wears. She needs a hairstyle that frames her face, not this dreck. There, I’m done.  Thank you for listening.

  • Susan Crawford

The dress really is cute, but a size up would have eliminated that pulling across the hips, and kept the skirt from gaping open at the hem, both of which would have elongated ScarJo’s curvy figure beautifully. Now, about that hair – there’s a sort of flat-top Grace Jones Bride of Frankenstein thing going on up there, and it does nothing but make Miz Scarlett look  –  well, odd.

  • So she’s been rockin the same hair for the entire press tour?  That is definitely NOT her dress.  There are undergarments that can help you dear.

  • This is just all bad.  It does not seem possible that this outfit makes her look both small breasted and a bit dumpy.  We all know damn well she’s neither of those things.  Terrible.

  • The outfit might have looked good if it fit her.

  • Anonymous

Why would a young woman who is such a beauty do this unflattering retro thing? Imagine how she could rock some edgy contemporary looks and hair styles with her gorgeous shape and complexion. Come on girl!

  • Am i crazy? I think (besides the hair) she looks great! You don’t always have to look as skinny as possible to look chic…

    • Oh, I have no issue with her weight.  It’s that her weight is in clothing a size too small.  That’s not okay.  Because that sends the message that YOU think there’s something wrong with your weight and are denial about what size you wear.  And denial is never pretty.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it is about looking skinny, but rather playing up your strengths–of which she clearly has many. She is gorgeous and curvy in an Old Hollywood way. When she shoves herself in clothes that don’t fit or don’t work on her, she ends up looking like a fashion victim.

  • Jessica Goldstein

The fit is atrocious and the change to the bodice (on the model it continues below the belt) is equally bad. Just unflattering all round.

  • I’d be interested, just for variety’s sake, to see a picture of her where you guys think she looks a cut above boring. It would be something to compare to all these substandard ones.

  • that’s nobody’s dress

  • You know, the more I look at these pictures the more I want just one day with this girl.  Because clearly she needs help and I could do so much better with that body than these unflattering clothes.  With that body and that face and that bank account?  There is no good reason for her to go out the door like this!

  • Yikes. Total disaster.

  • Anonymous

Cool dress, worn in the wrong size by the wrong person. She needs to give that hairdo a rest.

  • Not to be too terribly mean or anything, but she’s put on weight. There. I said it. Yesterday, I was ready to blame it all on that two piece ensemble that hit her way too high. Today, I can clearly see that she is going through a crisis. She needs a stylist, a life coach and a team of therapists. Let’s get this girl happied-up and back to her lovely self, shall we? Let’s.

  • Anonymous

It looks like a towel is wrapped around her waist.

  • Anonymous

here is a girl born and raised in manhattan.  how has she managed to ignore all the fashion influences in the city?  she dresses like she just stumbled out off the bus from nebraska.  the hair, the make-up, the tucked shirt.  it’s all baffling.

  • I get that the outfit is too small. I agree. But I also would like to point out that I intensley dislike the peeptoe geriatric white shoe, which draws the eye to her foot unneccesarily, and also, the vibrantly cherry-orange lippy, that makes the outfit all the more costumey, which is unavoidable with that hair, which if softer, would be a nod to another era, but since it is so severe, just looks like she woke up from 1940, Rip Van Winkle-style. Jeez, Scarjo, do yourself a favor and give your scalp a rest!

  • Also she tucked the shirt in the skirt, rather than wear it out of the skirt.  It is definitely too small.  And what’s up with the skin on her legs, is it lighting, cause she looks like a plucked chicken.  Maybe if she wore the back of her hair down, the retro style might have been more flattering.  Mostly the outfit is bad because it’s toooooooooo small.

  • Anonymous

It’s ugly on the model.  Skirt= too bulky.  Top=terrible bodice.  No hope for poor ScarJo.

  • Anonymous

i feel bad for her. what she looks like=her ability to get a job. this is telling everyone she doesnt look like that any more. it’s stupid, too, cos whoever’s dressing her this way is doing it in part cos she’s always portrayed as voluptuous, which she really isnt. she’s thin, just w/ a teensy tinsy extra bit of padding, five or ten pounds max over everybody else. that≢mae west; maybe theyre trying to sell her that way? but why? she looks perfectly fine the way she is. just, for heavens sake, someone who doesnt hate her needs to look at her before she leaves the house, particularly for [inter]national television along w/ hundreds, if not thousands, of people looking at photos of her after the experience, &, for heavens sake, stop her before she hurts her own career more.

  • Anonymous

Putting a towel on over your swimsuit does not make it a dress.

  • Anne Lucchesi

I just had to go look at some Lost In Translation stills to remind myself how nice she can look when non-crazily styled. Also Girl With A Pearl Earring. Honey, you have a lovely body and an interesting face. You can do better.

  • Anne Slovin

I think she COULD wear 50’s styles, just not that particular one.  Maybe something with a fuller skirt.

  • Pashmina Velour

On the model, the skirt covers the knees. Hmmm.

  • Anonymous

She needs to stop with the hair.  And that skirt makes her tummy look sortof poofy – and the skirt looks TALL – if that’s the right way to say this.  Poor thing.

  • Anonymous

    This is not good.

  • Anonymous

I actually like the ’40s—’50s hair. Always have. Nice to see her trying it out. It’s not perfectly styled here, but has a bit of that old-school glamour.
I agree, not her dress though.

  • oh, her poor boobs!!  Half her bust is squished UNDER the cup seam.  WHY?!

  • Her kingdom for a stylist. She’s really so beautiful, there”s no reason for her to look this bad.

  • Anonymous

Has she tucked in the top and shortened the skirt? Proportions work on model but not here.

  • Anonymous

The shoes are cute!  Don’t even like the dress on the model.  Definitely not the dress for any women with even a little bit of curves.

    • Anonymous

Yep. The shoes are good. That’s about it.

  • Anonymous

It’s not a great dress to begin with and it is too small for her. I don’t understand why these good looking actresses don’t just buy a fucking dress that fits. It would be far better than borrowing one that doesn’t .

    • Anonymous

      YES. YES. YES.

Especially the good looking financially successful actresses who can probably deduct red carpet wear as a business expense.

(You must be a genius. Or maybe you would just be one in L.A.)

  • Anonymous

It would seem that she has somehow Scarlett was unaware that the stylist that she hired, knows that Scarlett slept with her (the stylist’s) husband.

  • Anonymous

There really is so much wrong here…it’s laughable.  I especially liked and laughed at the towel over the swimsuit comments others here made, perfect analogy, and her poor smashed boobs…lol! Her hair…wtf?!  Betty Grable called….etc.  Hate, hate, hate her lip color.

    what a mess.

  • Anonymous

the faux paunch that skirt gives her around the waist is cringe worthy. and that tattoo always makes me want to sob.

  • R. L.

Bless her heart, she looks puffy.

  • Mary McClelland

Oh my lord – that is stunningly bad.

  • Anonymous

No-Go on the outfit and hair, but she does have beautiful skin and I love her lipstick…….have to admit after watching the clip I softened my opinion, she seems pretty funny and down to earth……

  • Anonymous

Jeez. What is going on with this girl? Did she lose a bet? That hair…that HAIR! Just STOP THE MADNESS….right now.

  • Jennifer Coleman

All right, that’s it. Scarlett Johansson is a mall-girl made good. I really suspected it years ago when she kept on sporting that top of head hair pouf, but her choice of outfits recently confirms the girl is tacky. Her looks & reasonably decent acting skills allowed her to be plucked up by Hollywood, but add a few pounds, take off the makeup and give her some chewing gum and you can so see her behind the counter at Chik Fil A.
Scarlett, hire a stylist, immediately. Better yet, let your manager find one for you – I’m not sure you’ll pick a good one.

  • oh my gosh. i can’t. she shouldn’t look that dumpy. isn’t she some kinda sex symbol or something?
    such an unflattering look.

  • Anonymous

That’s a very nice skirt. She looks distinctly sub-par.

I think she has the bones to pull off the hair, but it’s not making the most of the bones she has.

Also, she should look into some stockings (absolutely correct to her retro period) or some airbrushed leg makeup.  If *I* know where to find someone who’ll do it, you KNOW she (or her assistant or stylist) know 200 such.

  • Anonymous

The skirt is too tight, it makes her look pregnant (if I’m being nice) – fat if I’m  not.  We all know ScarJo isn’t fat.  The hair is a nightmare.

  • Anonymous

scarlett, honey, you are so beautiful.  but that hair and wearing clothes at least one size too small is making you look like a barn door.  stop it.  and whatever that tat is, it’s ugly.

the runway model looks like she’s jonesing for a fix.

  • Anonymous

Jesus, Mary and the Cable Guy!!  That skirt fits her HORRIBLE!!!  She has a great, va-va-voom figure and this just makes her look fat.  TAKE IT OFF!  RIGHT NOW!!!  The hair isn’t my fave but compared to the skirt, that’s nothing.

  • I don’t mind the styling, but the dress is not for her – she’s so beautiful and it’s doing nothing for her.

  • It’s just an ugly dress, really.

  • Anonymous

Skirt is too small, and she tucked the top?  The hair gives her such a severe look, instead of softly pretty, which is truly her.

  • spooki C

Did that dress even survive this? The skirt part looks seconds away from busting apart.

  • vmcdanie

Oy. The lipstick is the wrong color, the dress fits poorly, and that 40’s Girl Friday hair is not working for her. Such a pretty girl. She does better in a much less fussed over look.

  • Anonymous

    Wow. That is really bad.

  • Anonymous

She looked so pretty and fresh in Lost in Translation.  She needs Sophia C and Marc J to dress her and style her.  And she needs to make another hot film with Colin Firth stat.   Hideous dress or whatever in hell it is.

  • Anonymous

The dress could have been a win for her if she stuck with the original dropped waist of the runaway version.

The alteration makes her look like she threw on the first blouse she could find after showering, realized she was late for her appearance and frantically wrapped the first towel she could find around her waist.

  • Anonymous

She looks terrible and her body is not smoking anything in this outfit.. she actually looks like she has a belly.

  • Anonymous

I thought this was the dull one from Glee at first. Not good.

  • Ebony Dawkins

    Oh, Scarlett…

  • Ebony Dawkins

Well, one good thing has come out of this…Scarlett has influenced me to go to the gym in the morning.

  • Dita Von Teese could pull off that hair.  Scar, no no no.

  • Good Gawd, the fit is burning my eyes! I would like to say, from the 1st pic ALONE I knew this was about to be a disaster.
