Garcelle Beauvais is Chilly

Posted on December 22, 2011

You’ve been around the celebrity block enough times to know that even something like a Disney on Ice show is going to require picture-taking. We don’t fault you for wanting to stay warm and comfy while you watch giant toys skate, but honey, there’s gotta be a better way than this:

Garcelle Beauvais attends the premiere of Disney on Ice “Toy Story 3” in LA.

We think it’s a pretty safe assumption that no stylist aided in the putting together of this outfit. As such, we won’t subject you to rigorous bitchery, doll. Except to say that Snuggies are

a) For inside your house ONLY, and

b) Should NEVER have fringe.

Wait a minute…

Did you just BELT AN AFGHAN?

Oh, sweetie. There’s no excuse for that. Go home. You can watch Buzz Lightyear do a triple axel some other time. Also, your boots shouldn’t match your jeans, dear.

Gosh. I think she looks appropriate for the venue. It’s just a nice casual sweater-wrap and she looks pretty.

    • Anonymous

You and I would look fine in a nice casual sweater-wrap. Celebrities have signed a pact with the devil and thus have a completely different (and often inexplicable) set of fashion rules to follow.

I too thought she looked venue-appropriate until I got to “BELT AN AFGHAN” and now all i see is a sofa throw wrapped around her.

      • Anonymous

I spose. I still think it’s charming. I envision her or a friend actually making it.  And the belt is cool.

        • BerlinerNYC

Right. If I could get away with belting an afghan, I totally would. I might even try it (except it’s unseasonably warm in NY today). This isn’t dead-chic, but it’s cute and happy.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think she’s just attending an ice show. She’s posing in front of one of those walls of logos that celebrities pose in front of.

      • Anonymous

I agree that she knew she was going to be photographed. I just think that what she chose to wear for the occasion was fine. Oh well!

    • Anonymous

I agree – I think she looks fine.

I think that it’s not exactly an afghan – i think it’s something that is made to look like a wrap, but in reality the knitter has made sleeve holes.  I have something similar – but smaller and prettier and I use it in the spring between the turning off of the heater and the turning on of the air conditioner.  With jeans.  In my office.  Not on the carpet.  But I am with you moppet.  I like her looks.  She looks normal.

I’ve been waiting for youse guys to address the panchos that are appearing in stores. My niece had one on Thanksgiving Day, and although she looked cozy and adorable, I shudder to think of them as a fashion craze.
    This outfit resembled one.

Every time I see a cape or poncho in a store, I laugh and think “nice try, fashion industry”. The clearance racks are already filled with them.

      • I LOVE a good cape — they’re so impractical and fabulous.  But they must be worn by the correct person or they look stupid.

        • I have a sweater cape (almost exactly like this), but I don’t belt it!  I have a nice pin if I want it to stay shut.

I also have a spring cape for outdoors.  LOVE IT!

          • BerlinerNYC

I can’t hear the term “sweater cape” without thinking of Oprah on 30 Rock. “Sweater capes, calypso music, saltwater taffy….”

      • Anonymous

Long-time lurker but I registered just to weigh in with a quiet sob. I love soft capes and knit ponchos–are they really all that unforgivable? I love the “throw-it-on-and-go”ness of them. But if everybody is laughing behind my back… well, I’ll still wear them, but at least I’ll be self-conscious about it. 🙂

        • Anonymous

Ok now I feel bad! On the right person, with the right outfit they can look very cute, even chic. There’s nothing wrong with rocking a bohemian vibe. I just think the average shopper isn’t going to “get” it, hence the filled clearance racks.

          • Anonymous

You’re a sweetie–thanks for making me feel better!

  • Anonymous

I do like the belt, though.  If the rest of the outfit gets rejected, that belt can come over to my place to get over its disappointment.

  • foodycat

She’s so beautiful from the neck up. There are many better chunky sweaters that she could have worn.

    • Anonymous

You’re so right. That is actually the first thing I noticed. She is so pretty, natural, and relaxed looking here.

      • Anonymous

I said this on another post about her, but I’ve seen her in person and she is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen in real life. Beautiful features and she just has a natural glow about her. If she’d just get a better stylist, she’d be unstoppable.

  • Anonymous

Okay, I’ve been there with the afghan as sweater, except it was only for a trip from the couch to the kitchen and back.

I think this look might have been salvaged if she let the sweater drap open in front of her. Or she had chosen a different sweater and boots.

  • Gotta say,…
As I slowly scrolled down I thought, in sequence,  She looks great, nice hair, love the make up.  Navy and gray is a good combo for her and I love the nubbly texture of the, (scrolling further) OMG. Why is she wearing a furniture throw on her body?  And finally got to those shoes, which I love in themselves but not paired with skinny jeans of that shade.

    • Yes, the navy and gray is VERY striking.

  • MilaXX

I would have given her a mommy pass if she had just left the stupid afghan home.

  • Anonymous

Oh for heaven’s sake, did this bitch break into my house and steal the throw off my couch?? I know it’s cozy, but I just bought it! That’s not funny Garcelle, now give it back!

  • Anonymous

Yup – as soon as I saw the photo, I thought she wrapped herself on a crocheted round tablecloth and belted it!

  • Anonymous

    you guys crack me up.
sadly, I go out like this all the time. In fact–this outfit might be aspirational for me–it’s better than my version of it!!

  • Anonymous

The “Snuggie” may a bit much (and come on, clearly NOT constructed like one, nor like an afghan), but it’s not as bad as you’re saying. I don’t like the boots with those jeans, but she looks fine, overall.

She’d have looked like a real ass had she gone red carpet

Pretty, confident, and poised (and well-posed) trumps all.

  • Anonymous

Sure she’s wearing the afghan from the couch, BUT, she is wearing it well. She looks pretty, relaxed, normal and she’s all ready to snuggle up on the couch at day’s end. You wear that afghan with pride, honey; your outfit is hardly a crime against fashion humanity.

Maybe I’m grading on the Christmas curve, but we’ve seen a whole lot worse….

  • Anonymous

It would be better if the sweater looked more like a sweater, cuz it really does look like a belted throw.

  • Oh, no, ma’am, there is no excuse for that AT ALL.

  • I suspect we’ll see Vanessa Hudgen in this soon enough.

    • Anonymous

      Probably with nothing underneath though!

  • I don’t mind her wrapping up in a couch throw so much, but I wonder why the belt is up in the bra region.

    • Exactly. Except for the under boob belt, I think she looks great for the venue.

As for the boots matching the pants, that’s what you do if you are wearing a long top and don’t want your legs to look like stubs. Why is it OK to wear black pants tucked into black boots, but not any other color for the same look?

It’s been “cold” in L.A. and she looks cute, warm and stylish. (BTW, it’s in the upper 70s today and crystal clear after heavy winds yesterday.)

  • What’s so hard about a good sweater with a skinny jean and slouchy boot?  If I can put together better from my cheap-ass closet for attending the 9 billion things children drag you to, you CERTAINLY should be able to manage, Garcelle.

  • Ramona Boersma

I think she looks cute. So there.

  • Huh. Guess I disagree — I think she looks fine. The fringed shawl doesn’t offend me. Hair and makeup good, and she looks appropriately put together for a casual event. You guys ever been to one of those shows? Coooold.

  • Anonymous

Unbelt the sweater and put on different shoes.  Then she would be passable.

  • I am totally going to try that with my couch throw. I think she looks terrific.

  • Anonymous

To quote PR judges, “I would wear that”. Without the belt tho. But I’m a Mom who lives in Minneapolis and it’d be out to dinner.

    • Anonymous

i’d be dragging the fringe through my food.  no spaghetti!

  • She looks qt and cozy.

  • I also think it looks cute. No need to always look posh.

  • Anonymous

I actually don’t mind the look at all, I like the combination of navy and gray.

I do, however, dislike the boots, but that’s a minor quibble.

  • Anonymous

A Shout Out to The Duchess – I just bought myself a birthday present on Monday – little black ‘Bromley’ Booties by Michael Kors and they are awesome! Way cuter than Garcelle’s. Very comfortable and make my size 9 feet look little Geisha feet. I will be wearing them everyday for the foreseeable future.

  • Anonymous

“Wait a minute…  Did you just BELT AN AFGHAN?”

Best laugh of the day, thanks, guys!

    • Alloy Jane

They accused her of wearing a snuggie and all I could think of was that they were wrong and that all she had done was drape and belt a throw.  And then I saw that they noticed and was relieved.

And why is she wearing those booties with jeans?

  • Anonymous

She looks very pretty.  The sweater is a little unfortunate.  It looks like she picked up a throw from the living room sofa as she ran out the door to make the show on time.

    • Anonymous

Hey, let’s all try this!  NOT.

  • Anonymous

from the neck down, she looks a little like the the abomidable(sp?) snowman.  but in a good way.

  • Anonymous

I think it’s fine. Have you ever sat on one of those cold seats in the ice arena? Length is a must.

  • Anonymous

I think it ok for jeans “match” your boots – except this particular combination is bad.

Skinny jeans, riding or slouch boots if the pants are tucked in.
    And I hate wedge boots

  • I think she looks cute. I don’t even mind the sweater. Agree that some contrast between the boots and pants would improve it.

  • if she had worn some killer boots instead of those clodhoppers, I would say she dressed appropriate for the venue – even with the belted afghan.

  • Cathy S

I like it. The belt should be lower and she should wear different boots, but I think she looks really cool. I want a sweater-wrap like that.

  • Yeah, I think she looks just fine, too. It’s a crappy ice show for Pete’s sake.  Very attractive.

  • Oh. My. Word.

  • Anonymous

The belt.  It’s the belt that’s throwing the whole thing off.  Send the belt south about 4-5 inches and it would look better.  The boots….well.

  • Anonymous

I’m more horrified that she’s at a Disney on Ice show than her cute outfit. Replace the belt and I think she’s rockin’ a comfortably stylish look.

  • Anonymous

I think she’s looks event-appropriate. But the boots are ugly.

  • Anonymous

When this loaded, and I was reading the opening paragraph, all I could see was the shoulders and up and I was saying “Oh, lighten up, TLo, it’s a cute, cozy, OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THAT MONSTROSITY.”

  • Hetha Innis

I almost never disagree with a thing you say (and I’ve learned so much having been a minion since the very beginning), but I am kind of loving those boots with those jeans!

  • I think she looks fine, to be honest. A bit casual, but I assume celebrities have casual days like the rest of us.

I wish she’d worn different jeans, though. Something a bit more indigo, maybe?

  • Anonymous

she’s pretty, most of her outfit is fine [down to & including the matching boots, i think. i think women in general will think so, actually, theyll recognize why she did it]. but she should not be wearing a blanket. wearing a blanket just always ruins everything. even the words together are awful.

That was exactly my first thought, as well.

A cashmere coat or camel hair would’ve worked better.

  • Anonymous

I think this works just fine to see Disney on Ice FGS. Casual, warm, attempted style…attempted I say.

  • I agree about the boots, but I actually like the sweater. I’m a bad little Bitter Kitten. *hangs head in shame*

  • Anonymous

She appears to be one of those women (such as myself) who doesn’t have much of a waist indentation. Which means you should avoid like the plague drawing attention to the sides of the waist, say by belting a sofa throw round your middle, and instead FAKE a waist by wearing a striking belt and leaving the sofa throw or even better a long duster cardigan hanging loosely and concealingly over your non-indenting sides.

If the people taking your pictures are your friends, this get up is fine.  But if you walked out of your house knowing that the people taking your pictures are complete strangers who will sell the pictures of you to more strangers, this get up needs help.

  • Anonymous

Only the matchy jeans-n-boots bother me.

  • lilibetp

    I like it.

  • Anonymous

I like the belted afghan. What I don’t like is the ugly gray boots that match the ugly pants.

  • I don’t mind this. It’s not a red carpet event. She looks very mom on the street which is how a mom on the street would ACTUALLY look. If this were an IN or OUT, I’d vote her IN. If this were the Oscars or even a glam movie premiere, it would be much more heinous.
