Dianna Agron for Nylon Magazine

Posted on December 01, 2011

Kittens, we feel an edict coming on. From now on, any stylist who thinks putting a starlet in Twiggy drag for an editorial is a good idea has to spend the next year working as a sales assistant in a Lane Bryant. It has been DONE, stylists. Time to find another icon.

Dianna Agron for Nylon Magazine Dianna Agron featured in the December 2011/January 2012 issue of Nylon magazine photographed by Marvin Scott Jarrett and styled by Michele Reneau. Hair by Jenny Cho. Makeup by Georgie Eisdell.

Such a shayna punim on this girl. Such a shame she always looks so painfully uncomfortable posing for a camera. If you’re a female star under the age of 30, you pretty much have to do the fashion editorials; they come with the job description now. But poor Dianna just can’t seem to find the one that suits her. She’s a thin, pretty blonde, which means, like Kirsten or January or a whole host of others of her type, she’s basically a blank canvas, style-wise. You can do a lot with looks like hers, ranging from sun-kissed California Girl, to Hitchcock Blonde, to Rocker Chick, to classic WASP, with stops along the way for the Sultry Maneater, The Power Bitch, and either Marilyn or, as we see here, Twiggy. Certainly none of the looks here could be classified as “edgy” (they’re all pretty cute, actually), but none of these clothes look like the types of clothes she wears and she’s not a good enough model to sell the idea that she loves wearing them. If it were us, we’d stick with California Girl, WASP, and Hitchcock blonde with her.

Most aren’t good – but I love the silver skirt one and the one where she’s actually – GASP – smiling!

  • http://twitter.com/KalisaHyman Kalisa Hyman

Yes, yes, you are so right. (As per *always*) Love the silver & pink outfit – love her hair & makeup in that photo – but she does look so uncomfortable. She is definitely not selling it.

    • Anonymous

I was going to comment that I love the styling in that picture … the rest of it not so much.

    • Anonymous

The silver & pink outfit is the only one that caught my eye too.

  • Anonymous

She is pretty. I like what I have read of her, but these aren’t all doing it for me.  I really don’t like the ones with the heavy liner/mascara.  for some reason they look to me like her makeup is running.  it’s too bad.

    • Anonymous

I know what you’re getting at, but the heavy mascara look is part of what makes it so “Twiggy-esque.” Just kind of a bad photoshoot all around, I think.

  • Sobaika Mirza

She is so very pretty. It’s unfortunate that she looks totally uncomfortable in every single picture.

  • http://twitter.com/sockandaphone Gaby

she is so…..beige. This editorial isnt helping either.

  • CQAussie

Couldn’t agree more.  She’s very pretty and looks great in each of the outfits but also….rather uncomfortable.  Even the one shot of her full-on smiling.  That said, clothes = fab.  Also…her right arm seems to be broken in the cover.

  • Anne Slovin

I like the picture in the Christopher Kane dress, where she’s looking up with her lips sort of pursed.  She looks so much more natural there, like somebody asked her a question offset and she was thinking about it.  Not posed.

  • Anonymous

I’m getting more Edie Sedgewick, ‘specially in the smile shot.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

    Does she have cramps?!?

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I love several of these shots actually — 4, 5, 6, and 8.  They’re a big departure from her usual look, which I like.  And while none of it looks like anything she’d buy, I’m fine with that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

The thing is, I’m totally blinded by my want for the stacked saddle shoes. They would be so completely age inappropriate for me that it would be perfect for the holidays!

  • Anonymous

Is it wrong that I desire platform saddle oxfords?

    • Anonymous

i am so with you on the shoes!

      • Anonymous

I’m on the list for those shoes, too. Love!

        • Anonymous

          me three.

          • Anonymous

            I agree! Those are fantastic.

  • Anonymous

I think it *MIGHT* be okay from time time time with the right model (MODEL, not actress) but it looks totally phoned-in with Agron. You can’t put just anyone in that stuff.

  • J Dreesen

the best one is the one that is most likely a test shot (#4 down after the cover).  she looks the most at ease when she thinks it doesn’t count i guess.  *tear*.  #FirstWorldProblems

  • Anonymous

I loathe her makeup on the cover.  It makes her look like a chipmunk, which is quite a feat considering I normally think she’s got one of the prettiest faces going today.

  • http://profiles.google.com/burchardg Greg Burchard

Yeah – I see Edie S more than Twiggy here.  Particularly in the Sandro and Kane clothes.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

The only one I like is the one with the fluffy white coat. Nice smile.

  • Anonymous

eek, she looks so painfully uncomfortable in all of these shots.

  • Kit Taylor

who photographed this?! These photos are really low-quality

    • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

Seriously. They don’t look magazine quality to me.

    • Anonymous

They look like they were taken by a twelve year old with a point and shoot camera. It’s unacceptable.

  • Anonymous

Whoever made the decision on her make up should be punched in the face.

  • Anonymous

    Experiencing major tights envy.

  • Anonymous

Wow, is that Twiggy drag make up ugly on her. Girl, that is not your look.

  • Anonymous

    Wow.  Poor thing looks miserable.

  • Anonymous

The non-cover twiggy shot actually looks like she’s uncomfortably staring at the stylist being like WTF DO I DO and they accidentally took a photo then accidentally published it.

  • Joyce VG

She looks like a child playing dress up.  Hey, I’m disappointed in TLo for the Lane Bryant comment.  Not all of us are tall blonde and skinny.  Lane Bryant is fine store.  geez.

    • Amy Pistone

right with you. first time I’ve actually been annoyed by TLo.

      • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

You missed the point of the joke. A stylist would consider being a sales assistant at a clothing retailer to be an enormous punishment. It wasn’t a slam on anyone who shops at Lane Bryant.

        • Anonymous

So, then why not choose Forever 21 or Limited?  It seems rather suspicious to have chosen a plus-size retailer, regardless of the “joke’s” intention.

          • http://profiles.google.com/jenlindsey Jen L.

Or even Sears or JcPenney.  I took the comment to read “so they’d have to dress FAT PEOPLE. Quelle horreur!” But I’m guessing they meant “REAL people, not models.” Oh well. I shop at Lane Bryant and I’m fabulous, they should be so lucky to work with me. 😉

          • Anonymous

I agree that they likely were referring to “real people,” yet the context in which the comment was made didn’t quite play that way.  “Quelle horreur!” indeed!

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688777027 Jolene Barnett

Exactly. If that really was the point, why not go all the way and say Walmart?
The intention of the joke may not have been aimed at fat people, but that’s the way it came across, and an apology is still warranted, not just a “Well you didn’t get it”.

          • Anonymous

i suggested wally world too! :) it gives me a headache just THINKING about shopping at wal-mart, lol. a year there is an appropriate punishment for … well, almost anything really.

          • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

            If you say so.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688777027 Jolene Barnett

The way it was written and the implications of that specific store make it sound derisive. Out of how many hundreds of known retailers, you pick one of maybe 3-4 that actually cater to women of a larger size. When you add that it was a punishment for dressing celebs like Twiggy, who was well known for her waif-ish figure, it  comes across suspect.

        • akprincess72

I took it as ‘maybe the idiots (said stylists) would learn something & maybe even realize that not everyone WANTS to look like Twiggy’.   However, that’s just me…

    • Chicken Little

I can’t comment on their clothes but holy mother of mammaries their bras are awesome…I’m a 38DD (but a size 10 in pants, so I don’t really fit in their clothing so much) and they totally fill that Victoria’s Secret hole in my heart, since I’ve never had good luck finding anything flattering at VS in my size.

      • http://profiles.google.com/jenlindsey Jen L.

PREACH.  I’ve spent more money there on bras than clothes, even though I’m LB-sized. It’s nice to have pretty undies!

      • Sobaika Mirza

Really??? I’m going to try it then. I’m a 34DD and have never in my life found a bra that was both decent looking and supportive.

    • Anonymous

I actually work at Lane Bryant and I’m not offended.  The Lane Bryant comment isn’t a jab at LB; it’s a jab at fashion insiders.  TLo’s point is that, to most stylists, working with non-starlet/model/praying mantis types is a fate worse than death because it isn’t easy.  Working with someone who isn’t a “blank canvas” is a serious challenge for them.

TLo isn’t picking on Lane Bryant or large women in general.  They’re picking on people who see us as beneath fashion.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Someday, when I take over the world, I’m going to make them all work there for a year anyway.  Maybe they’ll learn to be more human if they meet some of the people they have hurt.

(I start a suspiciously large number of statements that way.  Perhaps I should add megalomania to my list of psychiatric illnesses…)

      • Joyce VG

k thanks.  I guess I don’t know the fashion disses.  I do so love TLo.

  • Anonymous

She looks like she has the personality of an actual twig in these shots.

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I’ll just come out and say it:  I find Dianna Agron the worst cast member of Glee because she’s just so very dull.  Pretty and blonde are covered by Heather Morris, who can also sing and dance.  Dianna is always, as she is here, uncomfortable, awkward and completely forgettable.

I’m sure she’s a lovely young woman, and she’s a very pretty young woman, but why she’s a star I’ll never know.  She makes even less sense to me than those Twilight people.

    • Sobaika Mirza

I am unsure how I feel about her – she’s beautiful and I love her personal style. She’s also not much of an actress. She has about 3 facial expressions and a serious lack of charisma.

      • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

And the baby girl, whispery monotone.  She’s like a fembot cyborg.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I think not dear.  Not great at all.

  • Anonymous

Whether through bad posing or Photoshop, on the cover she looks like she’s trying to avoid getting poked by those coverlines. Her right arm looks ridiculous. If this girl weren’t in a hit show, I’d say she harks back to the smiling, bland, mostly anonymous and interchangable cover models of the 70s.

  • Anonymous

She looks like she really doesn’t want to be there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jackie-Crowley/100002173366874 Jackie Crowley

Not so much Twiggy – Edie Sedgewick – ish

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

She really is a beautiful girl. LOVE the Miu Miu coat!

  • Anonymous

I love, love, love all of these clothes – every single look.  But she is a terrible model.  And the Twiggy/Edie drag doesn’t suit her at all.  Based on photos of her, I think her natural style is California Girl.  Which is not to say that you shouldn’t mix it up a bit and try a different style but this really doesn’t work.    And I get so tired of seeing every single magazine cover with some starlet with a project to promote.  Bring back the real models!

  • http://profiles.google.com/hillaryschuster Hillary Schuster

I think the shots where she’s pressing her lips together (with the heavy Twiggy makeup) and the one where she’s smiling are really cute. The rest are terrible.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maggie-Karabel/1658705310 Maggie Karabel

I just figured it out, she looks like Sienna Miller! That has been bothering me for a long time. Especially that fourth picture.

    • akprincess72

I think she is looking a little like Stana Katic (sp?) from Castle here.

  • Anonymous

I love that last shot. Fah-bulous.

    • Anonymous

      I do like this shot.

  • Anonymous

These all have a sweet, pretty look, but she is awkward in stills, much more effective in action.

  • Anonymous

I think she’s much more of a casual hippy chick, as evidenced by the street shot earlier this week. Go with your instincts, Diana!

  • Anonymous

She poses like the pretty girl you went to high school who thought she’d be a model someday.

    (Catty enough?)

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I don’t really get the Dianna Agron love to be honest. She’s too low key and blah.

  • Anonymous

Getting a definite Edie vibe from a lot of these, too.

The clothes are to die for and she is so pretty, but these are bad, bad photos. She looks so uncomfortable in most of them – the only one that even mildly works is the one where she’s smiling.

From what I understand, she’s from the Bay Area and kind of has a bit of that free-spirit vibe to her personality, which stylists should work with more. Wrong end of the ’60s for this shoot, is what I’m saying.

  • Anonymous

Such a pretty girl, but wow, I can’t remember the last time I saw a photoshoot where someone looked THIS uncomfortable. Even the one where she’s smiling looks off, like she’s pained–or like the photographer just barked at her to “SMILE! Show me some teeth!”

  • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

The Streisand shot at the end is KILLING me!

  • Anonymous

Why does she always look like she’s about to cry?

  • Anonymous

I think Argon is gorgeous but these pictures are so average. Not styled or shot well. That cover is actually very unattractive.

  • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

Ooh, I like the Topshop/Armani one!  Otherwise, meh

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1589131702 Jenna Gordon

    that is just sad.

  • Anonymous

Not so sure that the Nylon demo even knows who Twiggy is. I think this look is more timeless than just Twiggy, it’s a whole 1962 Carnaby Street vibe, and works on her.

    • Anonymous

I’m seeing more Edie Sedgwick than Twiggy.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like Nylon covers at all.

After months of research (with all the heavy lifting done by T Lo) I’ve concluded that not a single cover from this magazine is worth my time.

    • Anonymous

so help me, about a decade ago i used to buy nylon pretty regularly, the covers were better. but now, just like the rest of us, their staff has gotten older & are trying to stay relevant. unlike their previous buyer who is too cranky for it, they are seriously overreaching. the best example of this, i think, is the way they do their covers.

  • http://twitter.com/HotMessHousWife Sammi M

Looking at these pictures, I kind of want to smack her. Such a puss on her face for being on a hit tv show and having to do a photo shoot. This could’ve been a decent photo shoot if she got over herself.

  • Anonymous

I get more Sharon Tate than Twiggy here and that ain’t a good idea.  For some reason, I really get a “shit don’t stink” vibe off her ehre.

  • Anonymous

Oh, this is sad.  I can almost picture Tyra going through the film, saying, “This was your best shot… This was your best shot… This was your best shot…” followed by, “The girl whose picture I do not hold in my hands etc. etc. etc. – That means that you’re out, Diane.”  Get the girl some modeling classes!  :(

  • Anonymous

Maybe it’s been done but I think she looks great.  I love that they used pictures of her SMILING! So often we oooonly get that “serious and horny” look.

  • Anonymous

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=548830913 Darien Nevulti LeDisko

It really isn’t that well done.

But DAMN, i really think that she looks GAWJUSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • Anonymous

I’m getting more Goldie Hawn than Twiggy, but whatever the inspiration, she’s not selling those clothes.  I do like the idea of the Mouseketeer shoes on pink platforms, though.

  • oohsparkley!

Diana is gorgeous.  I always get a Grace Kelley vibe from her – my idea of blonde, intelligent and classy.  (I have no idea if Grace Kelly was particularly intelligent or Diana either, for that matter.)  I like the pictures, I wouldn’t have even thought to criticise or examine them this closely without the commentary.  Except the first, photoshop disaster, cover print- something is very wrong there.

  • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

    She looks terrible.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688523517 Andrea Lynn Rossillon

The ones with the Miu Miu coat and the mussed hair–very 80s, and I think that look suits her.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I don’t mind the ones where she doesn’t have the super heavy bottom eyeliner, she looks much more comfortable in the more natural makeup.

  • http://angryfemur.tumblr.com Andrea Lane

That really heavy under-eye liner is not working for her. It looks like she was crying in the girls’ bathroom ten minutes ago.

  • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

From the neck up, the Twiggy look would seem to be perfect for her. But she really does look terribly uncomfortable in every outfit and in every pose.

  • Anonymous

Sorry. Only Twiggy can be Twiggy.

  • maddy lucas

Oh man…this is pretty bad.  And seriously, Twiggy?

  • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

She looks like she’s having no fun. I don’t know if it’s just her or some environmental influence, but damn.

  • http://www.hilonwheels.blogspot.com hilonwheels

I REALLY like the one in the white coat, where she’s smiling. Super cute.

  • penn collins

so how was this a ‘SPECIAL ISSUE”? It actually made me think of the Olsen Twins (and that is NOT meant as a complement..). The smile was a nice, and unexpected, blessing… She really is a lovely canvass… not to find someone with some creativity…poor girl.

  • MilaXX

Theses are pretty stiff and awkward looking, but the last one with the side view and fur coat is actually kind of nice.

  • Anonymous

I feel like Tyra looking at these: “Grrl, find your light!”

  • Anonymous

She looks painfully awkward in all but the last.

  • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

The very last photo of her with the hair up and her in the fur is gorgeous. The rest of them are so…MEH. Colossal levels of meh, really.

In the last one she’s kind of working an old school movie starlet vibe. That’s the only one that comes close to selling the looks I would say. And I really like her makeup in it as well. Striking.

Oh well, better luck next time Dianna….

  • Susan Walker

There is also a bit of Julie Christy and Edie Sedgwick going on.  Just let the girl be who she is…I am going to shop those Wolford tights for my daughter, though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

Bored. She’s a lovely girl, but that shoot did nothing for her. I really want those JPG sunglasses, though. They sold me on that one.

  • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

Wow, she really doesn’t know how to model, does she???? Dianna, dear, I know you’re capable of more facial expressions than that.

  • Anonymous

You guys are so right. She does have a very pretty face but she really falls flat in photos, always looking extremely uncomfortable. And please no more Twiggy.

  • Anonymous

    Twiggy had much better posture.

  • Anonymous

It’s more Edie than Twiggy.  I can see Dianna as a Grace Kelly before Monaco.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And top it off, she looks horrible in most of those clothes.

  • http://inkblotphotography.blogspot.com/ Cate

she looks uncomfortable, which surprises me. i’ve seen her other editorials and she usually looks ravishing.

  • Anonymous

    Wowww…. it so….. dull.

  • foodycat

Someone should have splinted her dislocated shoulder and given her an ibuprofen, not taken a cover shot.

  • P M

They need to take a page out of 60s Bollywood here and give her a ‘Look don’t touch’, er, look. Which I guess is another way of saying Hitchcock blonde.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

    Those are NOT her clothes!

And is it just me, or does anyone else find the eyeliner a bit… unattractive?

  • aimee_parrott

The only picture I really love is the one where she’s wearing the Christopher Kane dress, possibly because it looks like an unguarded moment.  I like the one where she’s smiling.  The rest?  Eh.  Boring.  The clothes sure are pretty, though.

  • http://twitter.com/MFMblog MusingsFromManhattan

She looks so uncomfortable, it’s almost painful to look at.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=167100010 Meghan Young

Fire. That. Makeup. Artist. The hair stylist can go too. Oh my god, Dianna is beautiful but these are just horrible.

  • Anonymous

    why lane bryant?

is working with fat girls t.lo’s equivalent to fashion purgatory all of a sudden?

i know plenty of fat girls (myself included) who could style better than this in their sleep, and it’s not even our job. i would start by slapping the products out of the silly makeup person’s hands ~ they mauled her with the damned foundation amd eyeliner! i move that wal-mart should be the new location for fashion hell, bc well… it is in fact hell, both fashion- and otherwise.

  • Anonymous

I love that last one…it should’ve been the cover pic

  • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

Girl looks terrified.  I’m sure a little pee came out on some of those shots there.

  • Anonymous

Wow, she doesn’t look like herself at all.

  • http://twitter.com/thisiscarlijn Carlijn Kruidhof

You can barely even see that it’s Dianna in some pictures. In some pictures she looks kinda like Emma Watson, in another she looks like Hayden Panettiere. She’s so beautiful but these pictures don’t show it at all.

  • Anonymous

GAWD she is the living avatar of the color beige.

  • akprincess72

“From now on, any stylist who thinks putting a starlet in Twiggy drag for an editorial is a good idea has to spend the next year working as a sales assistant in a Lane Bryant. ”

May I say, I love you both.  <3

    oh yikes…

  • Mary McClelland

    Yeah – that’s all a bunch a terrible. Eeks.

  • frankystein123

I feel bad for her because she seems like a very nice lady, but she just looks so uncomfortable in her shoots!
