Deborah Ann Woll in J. Crew

Posted on December 13, 2011

Sweetie, your outfit doesn’t make a damn bit of sense.

Stylists can be such silly, trend-focused creatures that they don’t always manage the trick of taking a step back and assessing an outfit as a whole. And while you CAN (and current trends dictate you probably SHOULD) wear a pair of black tights with your cute little J. Crew cocktail dress in December, the fact that said cocktail dress has neither sleeve nor strap makes this the red carpet equivalent of wearing Uggs with a bikini.

We suspect she spent the night wishing both ill on trend-focused stylists and that she had a cardigan.

Too bad, pretty dress.  But the tights and shoes look ridiculous.

    • Anonymous

“Uggs with a bikini.” Oh, gawd. Perfect.

On top of which, the slightly longer dress length on the model looks better, more balanced.

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Urban Gypsy aka Tess

If ever a dress needed a shrug and some jewelry this would be the one, especially paired with the black tights and shoes. Sorry, T-Lo but I refuse to believe a stylist, who got paid in real currency, put this together and if one did, they need never to work again without reviewing every single post on your blog.

      • Anonymous

I agree, I immediately thought “Girl needs to hire a stylist!” Either that, or her friend from high school reallllly wants to be a stylist, and did this to her for free.

    • Anonymous

With her skin coloring, I have no idea who thought this would be a great idea…! But I love her. She’s adorable. But not when she wears black tights with a sleeveless dress.

    • MilaXX

yeah, this look is a big NO
I have never bought into the notion that adding black tights to an outfit makes a summer dress appropriate in the winter. It just makes you look silly.

      • http://twitter.com/The_Bugler Anna Daugherty

I do that, but I tend to wear a sweater/jacket/shrug over it. Helps with extending the wardrobe.

        • MilaXX

I understand extending a wardrobe. I group my clothes into summer, winter and year round wear. However that dress even with a sweater or a shrug is still a summer dress with tights and looks silly. You can’t add tights and a sweater to everything or the even sillier thing I saw on STYLE network, wearing a turtleneck under a strapless dress and think it works as winter wear.

          • Anonymous

Tights & turtles under sundresses is the epitome of Rocky Mtn Easter-wear (for kids, anyway).  You’ve gotta wear your springy new Easter dress!  But it’s 40 degrees and/or sleeting!

            • MilaXX

STYLE was trying to advocate that for grow women as some sort of fashionista look.

            • foodycat

I HATE turtles under sundresses! It was really doing the rounds a year or so ago.

            • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Ah yes, because turning your cute and sexy sundress into the adult equivalent of a jumper is a great look…

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

OMG, how horrifying!  That might be the most ludicrous idea I’ve heard in a long time.

As for summer dress in winter, I think it depends on the fabric.  I have some that I will wear in the winter and others I won’t.  For instance, my very thin, very full cotton skirt with the boho print on it is never worn once bare feet cease to be an option.  Because when I tried to pair it with a sweater and boots it looked awful.  My navy blue chiffon dress, however, works just fine.

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

They have amazing tights now with super cool patterns.  She could have dressed this for the season easily with a little jacket or cardigan or something.  horrific

      • Anonymous

Agree — perhaps a very openwork lacy pattern might have worked better, but I still think black tights are iffy with that huge expanse of blindingly white chest/shoulders to balance out. Plus the dress is strictly bridesmaidsville.

    • Anonymous

She’s do pretty.  Why did someone do this to her?

    • Anonymous

She looks very silly. I hate that these women are deploying the high heel oxford incorrectly. I really like them, but the last few starlets to wear them have not paired them with the right outfit!

      • Anonymous

Are those oxfords?  I thought they were sandals.  Which, when paired with hosiery, are even more egregious.

        • Anonymous

Ew, you’re right. A closer look reveals her toe poking through the end of the shoe. I saw the high vamp and thought it was a shoes. What a craptastic look.

          • Anonymous

I totally agree with you about the incorrect deployment (love your phrasing there!) of high-heeled oxfords, though.

          • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

It looks like a party dress that she bought at JC Penney’s juniors department.

    • Anonymous

a pretty shrug could have made all the difference here, tho from what i can see of the shoes they look rather abysmal too….

    • Sobaika Mirza

She could be so much better than this… *sigh*

      Love her on True Blood.

    • Judy_J

cute till I scrolled down and saw the black tights.

      • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I agree – I was liking it, and then… not so much.

    • Sarah Tyrchniewicz

I never thought I’d be opposed to tights, but yes… without something around the shoulders as a sleeve they don’t work here. And if she were wearing a shrug it would look funny. Fancy cardi, she’d look like me going to work. Wrap, it would be too old lady. So ultimately, I question the dress in December since the only way to really pull it off would be by freezing your butt off (unless you’re in a warm climate).

    • P M

Curse your stylist, Ms. Woll. Surely some of your more devoted / nutty True Blood fans knows a good voodoo curse or two.

Assessment: Ay caramba! She needs more makeup, a higher neckline, sleeves, more interesting stockings / whatever it’s called, and different shoes. Dang, and I like the girl.

    • Anonymous

She looks so heavy, like her lower half is stuck in a swamp. A beautiful beaded shrug would have changed everything.

    • Anonymous

Good grief!  What kind of stylist puts an actress (I had to look her up) into a strapless silk party dress and sporty black tights?  And more to the point, what kind of actress ALLOWS herself to be put into said outfit?  I love opaque tights and wear them a lot, but I knew in junior high not to pair them with a dress like that. She’s an actress with RC experience: Why didn’t she know better?

      • Anonymous

She never quite gets it right on the RC and often looks like somebody’s cousin who got a guest pass next to Anna Paquin and ERW preening in their edgy designer stuff.  I wonder if she has a stylist or *gasp* does it herself?

    • Anonymous

      maybe a mirror would help???

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BVTOKFJWRRDEOVYB2KU6LAHWUY Margaretta

Was she in a wedding?  This J. Crew dress is currently one of the most popular bridesmaid’s dresses in the country.

      • Anonymous

Really?  Goes to show that not all brides/bridesmaids are raving, hallucinating & deluded. That actually IS a bridesmaid dress one could wear after the wedding.

    • Linde Hoff

You two should start a reform school for stylists….there is clearly a dire need.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I don’t see the problem with the dress with tights.  I don’t see tights as a winter-y thing, because they aren’t warm.

      • Anonymous

For me it’s not about season but balance. Her legs draw the eye, and their darkness fights with the fair, fair, bare chest and shoulders.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Oh, there are plenty of problems with the look, but no “not under any circumstances” seasonal things for me — I realized that I didn’t mention that it’s an awful look for many, many other reasons:)

    • Anonymous

I have always been a fan of black tights/shoes with skirts and dresses, but THIS is definitely NOT working. The whole look is so bottom-heavy it’s ridiculous.

    • Anonymous

Tights….and sandals? Honey, fire your stylist yesterday.

      • Anonymous

Amen, that’s the worst aspect of the whole ensemble.

    • vmcdanie

The tights make the outfit look a little odd but otherwise it’s a pretty dress and she looks cute (and she is one of the best parts of an increasingly ridiculous True Blood so she gets a pass from me.)

    • Diana Ye

The outfit as a whole silly, but I think redheads look gorgeous in that color. Maybe because fuchsia and orange are such a classic color scheme. Also, I’m watching True Blood for the first time (on season 2) and she is hilarious in it.

    • Anonymous

If she had worn a little black cardigan, I’d give her a pass.  As is…I don’t believe a stylist styled her.  This is terribly unbalanced.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

My daughter would wear this. She is an artist/nursery school teacher. She has always enjoyed dressing herself….

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I thought this looked bridesmaid-y and indeed, J Crew does classify it as such:

      http://www.jcrew.com/wedding/Wedding_Bridesmaid/bridesmaidpartydresses/silkchiffon.jsp

    • Now I am The Bee

I always like a black tight with a pretty dress–but yes–she needs dark cardi or something to balance the heavy hose.

    • Anonymous

Ouch. That is so out of balance I feel dizzy looking at it.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

First off, she does not have the shoulders for a strapless dress. They slope, and any woman who’s old enough to vote should know that sloping shoulders and strapless dresses do not go together. You just end up looking dumpy. I know this, what with having the sloping-est shoulders in the world.

This is a great little dress, and she would look great in it if it had a sleeve or even a strap. However, as soon as she put on those tights, this look was doomed.

I like the color of the dress with her hair. It has a “clashing colors that actually go together” effect, of which I’m a big fan. And she’s as cute as a button. But, as I said…. doomed.

    • http://twitter.com/AMILLERKORDA Andrew Miller Korda

better yet, that stylist should have channeled an early 60’s vibe and done a black sheer top (under the dress) with a buttoned back closure, and slightly less opaque tights

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

And just a cute jacket or cardigan and she would have looked cute as a button. What a shame. Great color on her. Actually, that would be a great color on almost anyone.  Missed opportunity.

    • http://twitter.com/glastea Coralie

Maybe a black shrug might have helped? I don’t know. The contrast between her legs and arms is so stark I would have thought the actress would have noticed such a faux pas before she got into the limo.

    • Anonymous

Poor dear. & she paid someone for that advice. & I agree with others that the dress looks better a couple of inches longer. Not that it matters, wearing those tights with the bare chest & shoulders.

    • Mariah J

Give the girl a super cropped jacket and some jewelry, COME ON

    • Anonymous

      yawn……….jsnore……..beyond thoughtless basic.

    • Joyce VG

      scroll down fug!  wow

    • Anonymous

I can’t get past her hair.  With such a beautiful color on her head, why not do something lovely with it.

      • Anonymous

agreed.  i am so over this sloppily puled back plain style.  if only she had worn a beautiful choker and her hair pulled off her face but down in back, perhaps with a little braid somewhere- then she would be a most beautiful creature.  and perhaps with one of those balmain clutches.

    • Anonymous

The dress doesn’t look like it fits correctly. There is enough fabric in the torso for her to stand up straight without having a wardrobe malfunction. The model isn’t having this problem, so I am wondering if Deborah Ann ordered the wrong size?

      • Anonymous

perhaps the model has no problem because she has no boobs.

    • Anonymous

I thought she was wearing thigh high boots which was also on ugly choice. Hope she did not pay someone to style this look

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

I actually love this but it’s like she stopped styling herself two pieces too early. Without a focus grabbing necklace she just looks unbalanced, since the eye is immediately drawn to the black tights. Without some kind of outwear she looks seasonally inappropriate as well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045295912 Charles Purdy

Too bad! I think she’s one of the prettiest little things on TV.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

This just looks like a bridesmaid dress…lame and boring.  The tights.  Well, you said it all TLo.

    • Anonymous

This dress is all over the bridal blogs as a bridesmaid dress. This would be a good way to style it if you hate your bridesmaids.

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

I’m not liking the tights trend! I admit they look cute sometimes, mostly with casual clothes, but not when someone wants to look dressed up…. Unless it’s freezing out and the dress looks warm. I do love Deborah Ann Woll, she’s adorable.

    • Anonymous

that color looks lovely on her. unfortunately, it was wasted on such a dull dress.

    • Anonymous

      Wow–color blocking!

    • Anonymous

A cute little cardi and some great earrings and this could be pulled out just fine.  Or even a large, oversized scarf in a puce or teal tied and let flow down the back.  SOMETHING up top please.

      Classic scrolldown fug.

This gorgeous, gorgeous woman deserves so much better than this ordinary style.  C’mon girl, we’ll go shopping.

It looks like a costume that New Directions would wear to Sectionals.

Yep, Uggs with a bikini. Definitely NO. Girl consistently wears heavy unflattering makeup too. Amateur hour. Are we sure she actually has a stylist?

Dress would have been great on her with some strappy shoes, but dark tights and dark shoes?  Nay.

    • Anonymous

      somewhere between laughable and hysterical

She needs to introduce the stylist to Pam.

This is a beautiful woman. How did she manage to look so fug?!?

A cardigan and a necklace. A big, sparkly necklace.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

And her dress clashes with her hair. Ugh.

    • Anonymous

i dont know who she is but she’s pretty & it’s a pretty dress.
otoh, i dont care how trendy it is, everything she’s got going on w/ it is, at best, semi-conscionable.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I hate exposing my legs but I love wearing short skirts, so I wear stockings or hose under skirts and dresses a lot, even in summer. I usually wear a little cropped cardigan over dresses like that one, which I think balances the look out a little? But even without, I think she looks cute.
