Cover Girl: Florence Welch for Vogue UK

Posted on December 07, 2011

Okay, roll your eyes at us for using the term “color story” un-ironically if you must, but:

Florence Welch for Vogue UK

Florence Welch covers the January 2012 issue of Vogue UK magazine, photographed by Mario Testino and styled by Lucinda Chambers.

The color story on this cover is gorgeous, isn’t it? We’re thinking of taking that cover down to the Home Depot paint department and picking out colors for our living room.

Inside, Flo reaches out to us:

“I’ve always been so interested in fashion and clothes; it’s all part of who I am. This just seems slightly more high-octane.”

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to be polished. I’m just integrally slightly scruffy. You know you meet those women who are so cool? I’m striving for that so much! And I’m always too flustered.”

Geez, Flo. You’re one of those women who are cool. Trust us.

Y’know, we kind of hated this dress on Olivia Wilde (actually, there was no “kinda” about it), but it looks great on Florence. It’s always about the wearer first and foremost.

I love Florence so much. It’s a shame that her face is photoshopped to oblivion in this, though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1589131702 Jenna Gordon

i was wondering why she looked so odd. her music is great. there is no need to photoshop her.

      • MilaXX

THIS and is it me or does her head look too large for her body?

        • Anonymous

Yes.  Plus it’s a really awkward photograph.  Plus the color kinda makes me queasy.

        • Anonymous

Also, it’s like her eyes and mouth are on one plane and her whole head is looking another way. Like a pair of crooked glasses, except it’s her eyesockets/mouth.

      • MilaXX

THIS and is it me or does her head look too large for her body?

    • Anonymous

Well, they juiced up the color, and she isn’t wearing the neckline the way that the dress was intended (I suspect that had Olivia not closed the neck, there would have been a major wardrobe malfunction.)  So i don’t think that it is fair to compare at all. the stylist (and editor) made it a completely different dress.

      • RocknLox

Oh my God! She looks totally different. I had to google Florence Welch to see who this person even was. She looks like she’s way older than she is (25) I thought this was the age issue or something.

      • Anonymous

And apparently you must walk around with your arms up… prisoner style, in order for the sleeves to look just right!!

    • http://twitter.com/GQueen GQueen

Her face is waaaaaaaay too photoshopped.

    • Anonymous

I think they photoshopped all the scruffy off of her…Hate It!!!

    • Anonymous

She looks like she’s pushing fifty years old on that cover – I don’t think I’ve ever seen photoshop age someone so much!

    • Anonymous

That color is very similar to the color I painted my study/office/sewing room. Freaking love it! Looks lovely on redheads too.

      • Anonymous

Those are my living room colors!! So agreeing vigorously w the color story here TLo!!

    • Sobaika Mirza

Look at the Chloe on the model and then on Flo. Why is everything so… saturated?

    • Anonymous

“We’re thinking of taking that cover down to the Home Depot paint department and picking out colors for our living room.”

And a nice mahogany end table or two so you’ve got that luscious hair color in your living room’s color story….

The colors are to die, her facial photoshopping is whack, and I am getting myself down to Northtown Books to buy this. Pictures of Flo are dominating my inspiration board lately.

That is a seriously awkward smile. I’m sure I’ve seen her smile properly before, but she looks like she’s been forced into a photo with some embarrassing aunts at a family reunion that she doesn’t want to be in.

    • BerlinerNYC

OMG, she looks like the love child of Ann-Margret and Farrah Fawcett. She is owning it and serving it, and I am buying it and enjoying the leftovers tomorrow.

      • Anonymous

Yes!  My immediate thought was “she’s getting her Farrah on” but Ann-Margaret is a good comparison too!

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

she doesnt look very good in this cover what so ever. but i agree with the color story, those colors really are beautiful

    • Anonymous

I love blue and green together, especially the cover shades. My dining room is not too different of a blue, T Lo. I say go for it!

Florence looks just amazing on the cover. That hair! Those eyes!

    • Anonymous

She’s so fierce!  I have a major girl crush on her…sigh.

Ya think maybe that COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NECKLINE has something to do with it??

      • Anonymous

I could be wrong but I don’t think it’s a different neckline.  I think it’s buttoned with a button and loop closure that was left unbuttoned for the cover.

Or at least that was my first thought.

        • Anonymous

I think you’re right, but the overall effect is therefore completely different: On Olivia, it was a jewel neckline with a way-too-big keyhole, and on Florence, it’s a soft, deep v-neck.

Agree with boweryboy. It looks like it is unbuttoned and folded under on Welch. Also, the color is much more saturated on the cover dress. The Wilde one (heh) looks like a seafoam color.

    • Anonymous

I hate the way they’ve photoshopped all the character out of her face and turned her into a freakin’ alien. Stop it, fashion editors! She’s a beautiful woman. Leave her be.

    • Anonymous

perhaps because you don’t actually see most of the dress on her?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Elizabeth-Poytinger-Baumer/1516981341 Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

Florence nails it. she looks divine.

    • Anonymous

I feel kind of cool–my living room has a very similar “color story.”

    • Anonymous

I love it still ( I even loved it on Olivia Wilde). It’s perfect for Flo though.

    • Anonymous

Even though I would never be able to walk in them, I covet the model’s shoes, so hard.

    • Anonymous

i think i think i liked it on olivia wilde too, i certainly like it on the model. but she reminds you of patti smith more than she should, that she is hereupon tells something of the story.

    • Anonymous

This dress works better in an editorial setting than on the red carpet. That said, Florence has that extra oomph to make it work.

    • Anonymous

Well, OF COURSE it looks better.  It’s a better color, she’s done something to change the neckline from a keyhole into a plunging V neck, and we can’t see the awkward length.

There must have been a typo on the memo to the photoshopper- someone typed “Age: 52″ instead of 25.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=580241410 Iyad Hilal

I do like her but our Florence has never looked a day younger than 45 at best.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=717883898 Glynis Fediuk

I think she’s just gorgeous and I do like the cover, but yikes…let’s hope there’s a portrait hidden in an attic somewhere.

    • Anonymous

Really dig the way she works her particular version of retro. I seriously covet her hair, and it is absolutely what makes that cover work.

    • Anonymous

She is so gorgeous, and there was no need to photoshop her–she’s a natural!

I totally worship at her feet…I listen to “Lungs” and “Ceremonials” literally every day at work…keeps me from killing people, I think. :)

(anyone else see this pic and think, “in the arms of the ocean…”?)

    • BuffaloBarbara

Oo, if you do your living room with the colors (curtains in the dress color of course), will you post a picture? ;p

    • foodycat

I love the colour, but they made her face look very odd. Is she clenching her teeth?

You’re in luck. TV taught me that this color scheme is very ‘on trend’ right now for interior design, so I’m sure you’ll have no trouble finding stuff.

    • sweetlilvoice

Love Flo, I went to a party and everyone kept telling me I looked like her (red hair with bangs, pale skin). It’s a better comparison than the old Pippi Longstocking! I love her eye color.

    • Anonymous

Those colors look great on her.

The aqua with her hair and skin tone is perfection.  She looks amazing.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Colors are awesome, but there’s something very Dallas-y going on with her hair and face. I absolutely love her but here she looks like she’s 50+, botoxed and photoshopped into pseudo-youth.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Are you sure this is Florence Welch?? I thought it was a vintage shot of Donna Mills with a dye job.

      Colors are beautiful though.

    • Anonymous

Love the colors, but I think should have left her hair a little more lank.  This blown out look is all very 1981 to me.

    • Anonymous

As to the egregious Photoshopping, does this woman have no hips?  Look at the waist and the line of the skirt… yikes.

There is a movement in the EU – or is it only the UK or France, I’m just not recollecting at the moment – to require advertisements and (maybe? once again, imperfect recollection) photo spreads to disclose retouching.  I endorse this wholeheartedly.  If advertisers and publications want to alter an appearance, fine, so long as it is acknowledged openly so that the vast legions of plebes aren’t somehow deluded into thinking that is “real” or an attainable standard of appearance.

We IP folk abhor activities that misleading the consumer and are deceptive.

      All the best,

      NDC

    • Anonymous

Okay, yes, the color story is great, but… why does Flo look like WINONA FREAKIN JUDD in this picture??

Please, someone, explain this to me.

    • Anonymous

You’re so right the colors are amazing, and I want a room done in them!!!

    • Anonymous

The colors are stunning, but why did they have to make her look like a redheaded Linda Evans, circa 1985? Ugh. Do not like.

    • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

You may have hated it on Olivia Wilde, but notice how different the neckline is in this version.

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

How cool that she’s the cover girl! I’m so sick of the same old movie starlet and/or JLo on the covers of most American fashion mags. Gimme something new! Something fresh! Someone not peddling “New Year’s Day” or other movie I don’t care about.

    • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com skadi1

i just can’t like her ever since i heard “kiss with a fist.”  i just can’t be cool with that, or her justifications for it.

    • Anonymous

At first I thought it was Fergie… and no, not the popstar…

    • Anonymous

Why does she have Farrah Fawcett’s face in that picture?

    • Anonymous

Go buy paint today! We did our bedroom in these colors in our former house. Husband rolled his eyes when I suggested it; now he wants to paint our new bedroom the same way.

    • Anonymous

Is it just me or were you like, “OMG, Farah Fawcett with red hair” when you saw the thumbnail? Agree about the color story (*snort*). But I mean it. I really do like the COLOR STORY.

    • Anonymous

When I first saw the pic – I thought it was Donna Mills. She looks good.

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

Dayum she looks old. I had to look up her age–she’s only 25! She looks 45 in this pic.

    • Anonymous

The sense of movement really makes the dress. It was too static on OW to look good.

    • Anonymous

She looks like one of those middle-aged singers from Lawrence Welk.

    • Anonymous

Agree that the cover looks great, but the inside story’s a letdown. They put her in a lot of floaty colourless Pre-Raphaelite crap and gave everything a murky sepia tint that washes her face out completely. Lots of people seem to think that’s a good look on redheads.

    • Anonymous

Damn, at first glance I thought Donna Mills had dyed her hair and was wearing green contact lenses.

    • Anonymous

well and about the lighting/post-production…  they most certainly bumped up the color of this dress quite a bit, and made it warmer to boot; as you said, very few women other than olivia can pull off that supercool mint green, and i guess flo isn’t one of them…  plus, the angel wings (amped up by the wind in olivia’s pic), the awkward neckline/keyhole, and hem length were your main issues in olivia’s version, all of which have been nullified in this picture.  it certainly HELPS that the dress is on flo, who we all love, but i don’t think it’s the reason you love it more here than you did a couple weeks ago.

    • Anonymous

I thought it was Fergie (the Duchess, not the Pea)

    • Anonymous

the dress looks so young and fresh on the model. It looks Dynasty on the cover and I would not have recognized her if you had not said it was her – however the color story is lovely. It just makes the dress look like taffeta

    • Anonymous

Nice (if dated) color story but she looks pained/forced/bored on this cover and that dress can’t really be judged on how she looks in it when all we see is the bodice and sleeves in a completely unnatural “arms over the head” pose.  Seriously, who would stand around like that in that dress?

    • Anonymous

Her face looks so…strange in this picture.  I guess it’s photoshop, but somehow that has made her look old.
