Angelina Jolie in New York

Posted on December 06, 2011

Darlings, Angelina took a unicorn chariot down from her palace in the clouds to walk amongst the lesser folk for a while. And also to promote her directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” Assessments are in order.

That’s a great color on her, but it could have used something to break it up or add some textural interest. As with almost everything she wears, it’s a bit too simple, bordering on sister-wife.  A belt, Angie? Shoes that don’t match your skin tone, maybe? Work with us here.

Enh. It’s just all right. Nothing to get excited over. Granted, the number of people who could get away with wearing something like this is extremely low, so we suppose if you can pull off an all-white pants suit, you’re duty-bound to do so. We wish she’d ditch the aviators. Yes, they suit her face, but it’s time for a changeup, Ange.

She must be getting some change to promote that purse given the way she’s carrying it so conspicuously. Why not just hold it up to the cameras and do a Barker’s Beauties-style hand wave?

I think she’s wearing the same nude shoes with the white pant suit. Look at Angie, trying to pack lightly.

I noticed that too.  Its nice to see that celebrities reduce, reuse and recycle.

I’m beginning to think she only owns three pairs of dress shoes.  It’s always the same nude, black and peep-toe black shoes with her, or boots.

She’s just too thin. The brown dress is lovely on her, but you’re right – it needs a little something. The white suit is boring and the slacks are too large. He hair looks beautiful. Do you think the bag is packed with $100 bills?

    • Anonymous

I was thinking that she might be smuggling a third-world baby in it. ;-)

  • Sobaika Mirza

I get it – simplicity is best when you’re that beautiful. But these pictures could be from any point in the past five years. And no matter who you are, that’s what’s called a style rut.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

One piece.  That’s all she needs — one riskier piece per outfit.  Then she’d be fabulously styled.

      • King Dex

She took a lot of risks early in her career, with men and fashion. I think she’s just over that part of it. She looks good in that brown dress, beautiful really. Glad to see that little smile across her lips (those lips). Simple, classic and elegant would be adjectives I could live with for a lifetime….

        • Helen C

Ah, I miss the leather-dress, the blingbling-dress that she jumped into the pool with, and that dress she wore when she won her Oscar.

          • King Dex

Ahhh…The days of youth and folly past. You know Angelina was a girl who had A LOT of fun in her heyday, but now she really is Brad’s old lady with 5 kids, 6 kids? (I stopped counting). Rearing her brood, saving the world, directing, making love to Brad (the one that gets the least attention, I’m sure), this lady is b-b-busy.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

It wouldn’t take any more effort to put on a fantastic earring or bracelet.

          • King Dex

I’m not saying she wouldn’t look even more fabulous with some appropriate accessories, I just don’t think it’s her thing anymore.

So, who’s purse is it? I love it!

    • Anonymous

      It’s Ralph Lauren’s Bedford Bag…retail ~ $2k.  NOT LV.

  • Anonymous

Is she still shilling for Louis Vuitton? That might explain the bag. which I happen to love.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like either outfit but think she looks fabulous in both photos.  Yes, the outfits are simple, but simplicity works for her.

  • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

I like the nude shoes with the brown dress. I think because they blend perfectly with her leg line and actually go with the feel of the dress they work. Most of the time, I hate them, but with the brown dress, they’re quite nice.

    • Anonymous

The slim dark high heel without platform makes all the difference. They’re really quite nice.

  • Anonymous

yup. same old same old.  I still like her.  I guess that I am buying that, “yes, I know that fashion is part of the business, but i have so many better things to do that I will only do the bare minimum.”   She just doesn’t seem to care about it, and I guess I admire her for that.

    • Anna Maria Diamanti

I would buy that except for her Louis Vuitton deal (which is only the latest of many), the stylist & hair/makeup artists she employs, the thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of shoes/clothing/accessories she wears, and the painfully obviously staged photo ops that showcase all of the above. I don’t doubt for a second she spends just as much time as any other starlet on her appearance, especially when she knows the cameras will be there.

I think the simplest answer is the correct one: her taste level ranges from bad to boring. Remember her tacky Morticia at the Oscars look? She evolved from that to shapeless sacks.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Nope.  I’m not slamming her, but she’s never been a stupid women and she knows damn well that she hasn’t got enough critical cred built up to truly not care — you’ve got to be a Helena Bonham Carter or a Meryl Streep to pull that off and keep working.  She’s getting there, but she was a face for too long to really pull it off yet.

It’s a calculated look to promote the idea that she has better shit to worry about it.  And hey, good marketing.  But for one thing, her hair is giving her away — women with less time and vanity would most definitely not spend the time to get that hair.  That’s a look that takes A LOT OF WORK to create, because no natural curl pattern lays that way.

      • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

        nice insights!

      • Anonymous

Did Jolie deserve her Oscar?? What has she done that has gotten ANY critical acclaim in the last 5 years?? Besides break up a marriage and have a bunch of kids??

I think she is a phony.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

The Changeling, The Good Shepard, A Mighty Heart, and I think she should have gotten more attention for Salt.

She doesn’t work as much now on purpose — they take turns with work so that they can be together more.  And sorry, his marriage wasn’t her job: it was his.  Clearly, he didn’t work to keep it, so there were problems there.  (Though I do think it could have been much better handled.)

And yeah, I think she deserved the Oscar for Girl, Interrupted.  Of course, I’m a bit biased, having been in a psych ward for awhile and dealing with clinical depression.

  • BerlinerNYC

I may never have liked her. Point of fact, I despise her. But I must concede that she looks fierce.
    Dammit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I have to agree, its time to ditch the aviators.  I don’t think they look that great in the first place. The clothes are all her style.  Which means I don’t care much at all for them.  Monochromatic.  How exciting.

  • Anonymous

Oh come on, you guys.  You’re missing that bag for what it is.  It’s her Magical Doctor Bag—and she’s got the cures for cancer, hunger, and all the rest of the world’s problems in there!

You can’t just leave something THAT important in your unicorn chariot.

    • Anonymous

Oh, I assumed there was a fresh new baby in it.

  • Anonymous

Of course she would direct something called “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” ::eyeroll::

It’s a movie about the war in Bosnia, not exactly a lighthearted subject.  So I’m not sure what your problem with the name is?

But your hate for me is informed?

It is possible to find her pretentious without actually hating any ethnic groups. Let’s all equate me finding Angelina Jolie full of herself with me being ignorant and bigoted!

        • http://twitter.com/Siedhr Dana

I don’t hate you and I don’t understand where you’ve got that from my comment. It is indeed possible for me or anyone else to disagree with you without being motivated by some intense emotion, either towards you or A Jolie. I am not a Jolie fan, nor am I a hater.

I was talking about your apparent hatred for The Jolie which in your comment uses a reasoning that doesn’t take into account information that already exists. That you find her “full of herself” is your business, but I was rebuking your motivation, not your opinion. I don’t care what you think of her.

Also, nowhere did I imply I thought your apparent hatred is bigoted. There is no information in your comment for me to base such a conclusion. I am flummoxed at your reply that seems to have no connection with my comment. How about you read what’s actually there and respond to that instead? Or if you feel I wasn’t clear enough, then ASK. I noticed that you’re very defensive of yourself (even though I didn’t directly or indirectly attack you, just your reasoning) and your motives for disliking/apparently hating her, but you don’t actually deny that you DO in fact hate her.

Hate IS often uninformed. It is also blind and deaf to reason. Unfortunately it isn’t also paraplegic, which is why it is so dangerous regardless of its motivation. Which is what motivated me to comment.

          • Anonymous

Oh my, Dana. You really need a hobby.

          • oohsparkley!

            “paraplegic”?

          • Anonymous

It should be “paralyzed”, in the sense of “unable to physically act upon”. “Unfortunately it isn’t also paralyzed and mute” would be the final version. My mistake. English isn’t my first language and it gets away from me sometimes.

Bosnia is in the Balkans, and ‘Balkan’ is believed to have derived from the Turkish words for blood and honey.

I wonder who told her that. I am sure she didn’t find it in a book. ::eyeroll::

Eh, I’d rather see pics of the Jolie-Pitt brood these days than her or Brad. The kids are much more interesting.

    • Anonymous

I would rather see pictures of none of them. Both of them are has-beens, if they were ever really well regarded in the past. I am going to do something more interesting than continue to read about her, like watch some paint dry. :)

    Eh.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I am so tired of her.  She is so thin it gives me the creeps to look at her.  Please, someone feed her something loaded with calories.  It would do her wonders.  Her clothes are ugly.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5UQHEKG5EDX4T6NMARUC565TPQ Amy

Before she fixes the clothes she should wipe the smug look off her face. That is never fashionable!

  • Anonymous

    Nice bag!
Sorry to disagree, but I don’t like that color of brown on her.
    Otherwise, yawn.

  • Anonymous

    Love her in the white.

  • MilaXX

The only thing I like is the bag.

  • foodycat

In the brown dress she reminds me of Cathy Cambridge. But Cathy would have something made of diamonds pinned to the front and possibly a pinker lipstick.

  • Anonymous

She looks like she has an eating disorder.  Someone should help her out.

  • Anonymous

I think it’s pretty amazing that she looks timeless.  I am not a fan of her choices, but she has a certain perspective and makes it work for her.   I also hate her because she is so beautiful and doesn’t seem to age.  Perhaps she is from the Planet Xenon, where when she is there, she takes off her human form and takes care of Xenonian orphans by wrapping her purple tentacles around them and feeding them “pleth” from the protuberance on her forehead.   But I digress.  I think she’s still “IN”  if that were being asked.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Is it odd that I would totally do the purse bit if someone paid me to tote it around like that?  Just because I would find it funny… though I imagine I wouldn’t be getting too many more offers after that.

I did the pantsuit, I just think she massively missed out opportunities with it.  When you do all white, you need color somewhere: your shoe, your bad, your face, whatever…

  • Anonymous

What one person sees as a “style rut” another sees as a “style manifesto.” I gather from her choices that she’s not that interested in fashion and doesn’t want to have to think about her wardrobe. Much as I love the world of fashion, I’m pretty much the same way. Were I a celebrity, I’m sure I’d bore you all to death.

  • Anonymous

Maybe she likes the aviators because she is an aviator.  The woman can fly her own plane and if she wants to pack light with just one great pair of shoes, that’s her call.  I love her glasses and to me they are her signature.  Kinda like Anne Slater’s blue-lens cateyes.

I don’t think Angie is in a style rut at all.  This look, quite simply, IS her style.  She presents herself in a polished, simple and elegant way, free of all frippery (think Marchesa) that other lesser beings fall prey to.  Her clothes make a statement about who she is and what’s important to her.  I could look at her all day.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

My husband was an Aviation major in college and he wears other sunglasses.  (In fact, I banned aviators because his head looks silly in them)

I’d like to see her take a few more risks with accessories or hair or something.  Just a little something to give her a bit more of an edge.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Vella/666619877 Matthew Vella

Love her. Kinda love that she really doesn’t give a shit and looks like she’s above it all, but only cos she seems like one of those people who can legitimately say they are above all the petty stuff a lot of us like!

  • Anonymous

She needs a hot ginger handler.

  • http://twitter.com/marilynreineman marilyn reineman

In the brown outfit, the slight pleats at the waist are remeniscent of elastic waist pants.  Please say it isn’t so.

  • bloodshothalfblind

she looks better than she has in a while.  ill give her that.  (like she might actually be trying this time.)  but she always leave me wanting more from her fashion-wise.  never 100% from her. ever.  like shes determined to always be less than perfect.  also, hasn’t she worn these exact outfits already like 10 times?

  • Anonymous

I think she’s going for that polished, classic, effortless look, at this stage of her career/life.  This works for her.  She really doesn’t need to try to hard.

  • Anonymous

She is pulling a Jolie, directorial style.

  • Anonymous

If what marlie says is true, I understand the nude shoe choice with the brown dress. I guess nude would be the way to go if you’ve got multiple outfits and not much room in the suitcase. Even without accessories or a punchy shoe, she just looks so…effortless. That’s the fashion I love.

  • Anonymous

Girl is just allergic to accessories. Zhuzh it up a little honey.

  • Anonymous

I’m impressed with whatever undergarment she has under the white cami.  She clearly has something on, but it is completely invisible under that top – amazing!

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

The cami itself probably has a nude lining sewn in.

Is brown in?  I feel like I’m seeing a lot of brown lately.

  • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Maybe our screens show the colors differently, but to me, that brown is doing nothing for LaJolie. And I’m not anti-brown, either; I think the color can work wonders on some folks. But the top to bottom shiny fabric that’s not particularly interesting or well-fitted– I don’t think it’s giving that directorial vibe she might be after.

After perusing the LV website, I’d say the bag and especially the tag look like LV. And doesn’t blue-shirt handler look related to Ginger handler?

    • Anonymous

I agree about the brown.  It is not a good color on her and it clashes with the color of her hair.  I’m totally with you on the shiny as well.  The white is actually a better look for her.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

    Yawn

  • Anonymous

I thought she had a contract with Louis Vuitton for the handbags, but I guess she can still carry a Ralph Lauren…. I don’t like her clothes are so shiny, it’s hard to keep them not wrinkly, even when you ride in those spacious SUV….
(i love the unicorn joke :-)

i just found out someone i knew died [took a year, thats how far i took myself out of the world], anyway, it reminded me to listen to the band he was in, which was called coil [if anyone knows what i'm talking about. as per: not a simulacrum of the avant garde]. yr barkers beauties videotape goes really well w/ it. just to let you know.

as per her clothes: can she look bad? ever? i wish i could wear a white pantsuit. maybe in heaven.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

You could — if it’s cut well and the right shade.  White is not as hard to pull off as most people think.

  • Laura Korth

She looks pretty chic though, no?

  • Anonymous

I’m gonna get nude shoes thrown at me, but I just love the way she looks. It’s all about the f*ck you, I know something you don’t smile. And she’s always sporting it. And I’d be willing to bet she DOES know a thing or two worthy of that smile. I just LOVE her. And I LOVE both outfits and I love how her body looks like artwork purposefully placed in every single picture. She awes me.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Remember on Moonlighting (yes, I know I am dating myself, shut up and follow along) when Cybil Shepherd always wore those ridunculous silk suits? Like a normal person could actually wear those while, I don’t know, getting in a car or shopping at the grocery store.

That’s what Angie’s clothes remind me of. Someone make-believe who doesn’t have to function. She just has to breathe. Boring as hell. So very boring.

  • Anonymous

In defense of the nude shoes.  It’s very rare to get a nude shoe so close to actual nude color on any given foot, props for that.

  • Linde Hoff

She’s traveling…this isn’t a red carpet event.  My work used to make me travel 28 days per month, and the last thing I wanted was to have a lot of accessories.  She looks like a veteran traveler and really put together.  I’m impressed.

  • Anonymous

she is no stylista, is she? meh.

I think with her looks she would look terribly ostentatious with much more. Leave the gewgaws for lesser beauties. I love her style.

What designer are these items?! Ferragamo? LV?

It’s all working for me, but a great leopard print shoe with that brown satin would have rocked it.

Must disagree here. I love her look. Very classic and elegant. She’s so over-the-top beautiful that overstyling just reads as “too much.”

I have never seen her physical beauty. Look at that first picture of her, in profile. She is seriously unattractive in profile. And the front view, I just don’t see it. At all.

Also, call me naive, but is she really getting paid to carry that purse? If so, that is really tacky.

Chic and simple, would be boring if not for that amazing face. I don’t like the brown on her — the color isn’t right and the dress is too big. My favorite quote she ever gave a fashion magazine was when she described her lipstick color as a brownish neutral because “my natural lip color is too red.” I died laughing, O, poor Angie!

skip the madness about the bag, that is a well dressed woman.
