Lady Gaga Shops in New Delhi

Posted on November 01, 2011

We’ve been all over Steffi’s latest drag routine, which we like to call “cracked-out socialite/fairy princess/Greek shipping magnate’s widow,” but we’re not really feeling this one.

You know why? It’s because these are genuinely cute and stylish pieces and we find ourselves wishing, just this one time, that she made some more conventional choices. Keeping them together as they were presented on the runway is so boring and we think both that jacket and that skirt are pretty fabulous, but would look much better paired with other pieces.

Steffi, we get that this is your schtick right now and that you’re having fun with the excesses of the fashion industry, but even Hot Ginger Handler looks a little disappointed in you. He obviously shares our great affection for good pairing and accessorizing.

I’ll tell you what’s not working, that odd shaped scruff on ginger handler. It needs some adjustment.

With this outfit, Stefi begins to teeter back towards the Gaga that annoys me. It looks like some cheesy skating outfit that the studios would have stuck on Sonja Henie back in the day. She just needs a little muff.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Heather-Waddell/10401341 Heather Waddell

But if she had a muff it would swing her back toward fabulous again because it would just be that crazypants. Or crazymuff, if you will.

      • Anonymous

If she had a crazymuff, I just might come around.

        • Anonymous

Only if it has a little zippererd pocket within which to store one’s sunglasses.

          • Anonymous

put that out on etsy right now. it’s a winner-call it crazymuff! you may have to pay royalties to heather for the name.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3NXBVKLOMNGCAVCVXOVWDGD3SE Marissa

I get where you guys are coming from (I always do) but I like this. It’s simple and has just a touch of weirdness. What I like most of all are the sunglasses. She’s worn them for years and unless these are a newer version, I appreciate that.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I love that the handlers match.

    • Anonymous

i just love the handlers.  they’re the best thing about the look.  second best is the shopping venue.  let’s see those delhi handicrafts!  i’m still in lust for mount baldy.  you can have ginger- he needs a shave.

  • Anonymous

I’m OK with her look. The clothes are chic and fun. I actually wish she’s worn some of her signature tights here though. Her legs make me feel cold. Of course after the past three bleak days “cold” is a relative concept, since the heat is now back on!

    • Anonymous

She is in Delhi, which is a tropical climate.  I think it’s still in the 80′s during the day there.

      • Anonymous

right, but then again she is wearing what looks like a wool suit. with fur or feathers (?) at the bottom. does GaGa dress for the weather? what is the correct season for a meat outfit, anyway? Barbecue, or cold storage?

        • Anonymous

Oh, you’re right.  I don’t think Gaga gives a crap about the weather.  I just don’t think her legs were actually cold.  Maybe the incongruity of wearing a jacket and fur on top, with bare legs was supposed to be the point?

          • Anonymous

yeah, who knows? the “normal” thing to wear with this suit outfit would be black tights. but we’re talking about GaGa here. so why would I even bother to imagine she would, then, be wearing black tights, or any tights, for that matter? maybe her legs should, then, be covered with a string of holiday lights, or multicolored pencil shavings. I miss “old” GaGa!

      • Anonymous

It is in the high 80′s, I just checked on Weather.com (I know I know….)

      • Anonymous

It gets quite chilly in Delhi.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Basically, she’s not in drag. If it were anyone else out shopping, she’d look great….

  • Anonymous

Hot Ginger Handler looks like he’s done some rough living lately.

    • Anonymous

Yes he does!  and is that a mustache??  I’m sort of embarrassed to admit that I read the Gaga posts mainly for the hot ginger handler sightings :)

  • Sobaika Mirza

Sorry, she looks incredibly foolish for wearing that around Delhi’s markets. Even more so than usual.

    • Anonymous

This is a great point–her outfit seems really inappropriate for New Delhi in many ways (not just the weather).

  • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

Apparently designers will ship out looks to celebrities now (like, full runway looks) and if they don’t wear it exactly as shipped, they don’t GET to wear it.

  • http://twitter.com/baxterbartley Becky Bartley

In the thumbnail for this entry it looks like Gaga is just in a zipped up Northface and RayBans as if she was running late to her Exercise Science 112 Class at any University in the Northeast. This makes me very sad, Lady, very sad.

    • Christina Brennan

Zipped up Northface!  Exactly my first impression!  The look would be much improved without that hideous zipper down the front.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

Its so normal and boring.  I have more interesting things in my own closet.
Its like she’s gotten tired of trying to top herself.

    • Anonymous

but do you have a ginger handler in your closet?

  • Anonymous

It looks like the runway model dress has feather trimmings but Gaga’s dress looks like a combination of feathers and trimmed poodle hair. Also don’t like the colour and the bulky looking jacket.

  • MilaXX

Is it even possible to say Gaga isn’t cracked out enough? Shame on you Stefi, you couldn’t even give us a crazy colored wig?

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

the real problem w/ it, i think, is that it doesnt look very good on her.
i cant imagine alaia making something that didnt fit exceptionally well & it looks great on the model so i dont know whats up.

    • Anonymous

I agree. I’m not sure if it’s the skirt’s fullness and her shorter stature than the model, but it doesn’t seem to flatter her like many other of her crazy outfits do.  Plus the color is just dull (I mean for her, where I live this would be a riot of color).

      • Anonymous

It also swallows her neck, contributing to the overall stubbiness of the look.

        • Anonymous

And she doesn’t have much of a neck!

        • Anonymous

And the long, limp, and very flat hair combined with the bulkiness of the fabric on her torso really accentuates that neck-swallowing effect, doesn’t it?  I saw pictures of her sitting down in this outfit, and there seemed to be something almost off about how her head was placed on her body…

  • Anonymous

I’d say that she toned it down, specifically for walking around New Delhi. Indians are quite traditional about how women should conduct themselves in public. They would have rioted in the streets if she showed up in one of her wackadoodle nekkid outfits. They don’t find Western attitudes about sex, and lack of shame, to be assets, and Lady Gaga is the poster-child of those particular attributes. They are extremely judgemental and harsh on their own actresses who dress or conduct themselves in a manner that could be construed as “inappropriate.”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DJQMGJU7MZMBVLSD4GUTPJEPD4 murt

Completely disagree — it may be a stereotype that Indians are conservative, but you can wear whatever you want on the streets, ranging from a niqab to something that exposes almost anything, without catching a second glance beyond the usual catcalls/harassment etc that you might get in any case.

And as far as Indian actresses go, what about Mallika Sherawat? Or Helen in the past? Or Rekha for that matter? None of these actresses has been particularly conservative, and I could cite many more.

When I go there I wear sleeveless skirts and short skirts without any issue.

  • Anonymous

I’d say the problem is that there’s no Gaga-esque touch to this – it’s just a fabulous designer dress. With ordinary accessories & impractical shoes.

Ginger handler is looking tired. I’m fond of the gaunt & hollow-eyed look, myself, but he looks perhaps unwell.

  • Anonymous

WHY does Hot Ginger Handler have mutton chops, for chrissakes?

I still love what she’s wearing.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

It’s kind of fantastic that this is dressed down for her, but yeah.  Needs more GAGA.

  • Anonymous

I wish she’d gone with the shoes paired with the runway look, strangely enough.

  • Anonymous

She needed to wear that outfit with thigh-high platform boots.

  • Anonymous

This is an example of the wrong dress on the wrong girl because I think the runway model looks great.

    • Anonymous

      I agree.

  • Anonymous

Wouldn’t she be hot hot hot in that jacket (which looks like wool) while shopping in New Delhi…. drip drip drip, sweat, sweat, sweat!!

    • Anonymous

      gaga doesn’t sweat.  she glows.

  • Anonymous

That’s just not your dress, Gaga. On the other hand, she’s on my good side right now for that beautiful Naeem Khan she wore in the other post.

  • CQAussie

Wow that ginger IS hot, isn’t he??  SIGH.

  • CQAussie

Wow that ginger IS hot, isn’t he??  SIGH.

  • Pennymac

Really not interested in anything Gaga. I only read your posts on her to see a glimpse of that Ginger Handler.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Yawn.  Wait, did I just say that about Gaga?

    • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

She really seems to be losing her steam, huh?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DJQMGJU7MZMBVLSD4GUTPJEPD4 murt

And as far as Bollywood actresses – what about Mallika Sherwat? Or Helen in the past? Or Rekha for that matter? None of these actresses have been particularly conservative by any standard.

I hope that market was air conditioned. Its in the high 80s in New Delhi.

  • Anonymous

Don’t kill me, but I don’t find Hot Ginger Handler to be hot.

    • Anonymous

      Me neither.

  • Anonymous

    Mmmm…love Ginger Handler.

  • LocMama

Gaga’s looking particularly unGaga.  Hot Ginger is looking like he’s fighting off a stomach virus & has the mustache of a 70s porn star.  But what’s really catching my attention is what’s in Tall & Bald’s pocket in the first photo.  That does NOT look like a wallet.  I’m just sayin’.

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

I agree, Ginger looks rather peaky.

  • Anonymous

What about hot BALD handler?  Are we even mentioning him?  He can guard my body anytime!

  • Anonymous

With an OTP up do on the hair this would have been much better.  The hair is too draggy and dull.  Both of the handlers could body tackle me, do a full cavity search and lock me up for an extended period of time.  Whoops, did I just say that out loud?

    • Anonymous

      OTP?

      • Anonymous

WHOOPS!!  Total typo, was meant to be OTT for “over the top”.  Sorry, I was way too preoccupied with the two hunky handlers…. :)

  • Anonymous

The ‘keep away or I’ll cover you with feathers’ skirt is amazing. With the jacket it looks too warm.

  • Mariah J

For me, the glasses ruin it. Ick.

Shopping in New Delhi is insane!  So fun, tremendous variety, bucks that go a long way, total sensory overload.  I’ve been to Dilli Haat several times –(a decade or so ago) — fabulous fun.   That skirt looks like a bordello lampshade but she’s got such pretty legs and she’s wearing sensible shoes!  Love the sunglasses.  Makes me happy to think of her there — wonder if we’ll get her Madonna-in-sari moment coming to a screen near us anytime soon.  She has such a great figure and interesting face — would love to see her scale in way way down and start dressing like a real star.

LOVE the shoes on the model!

Just before my trip to India, a friend gave me an article from Vogue about a clothing shop in Delhi in the Palika Bazaar. And, somehow, I guess since it was in Vogue, and since Delhi is one of the world’s largest cities with plenty of rich people, and since it was at Connaught Place, a famous architectural remnant from the British Raj, I got the misimpression the Palika Bazaar was sort of Rodeo Drive-like. Oh how wrong I was. Most of the shops there sell bootleg DVDs, pirated electronics and cheap trinkets. It’s underground, with a subway-station feel, and I was all alone, chest-to-chest with thousands of Indian men.  But not a soul touched me inappropriately, and I ended up buying a lovely custom-made salwar kameez which was delivered to my hotel the next day. I also bought several exquisite hand embroidered cotton shirts from the shop mentioned in Vogue, Lal Bihari Tandon. (I still regret not buying a more expensive silk embroidered one.) One of the most memorable shopping experiences of my life. Something tells me the Ginger handler, among other things, will prevent Gaga from having this type of experience.

      Fascinating story…

  • Anonymous

For me, the biggest issue is the fit on the jacket. It’s too tight in the bust/hip and too loose in the sleeves. Also, the runway presentation of leaving it a trifle unzipped at the bottom is exactly the right choice. (I always thought menswear conventions had it right regarding bottom buttons, etc.)

The second issue is that it’s all a little too quiet for GaGa DraGa. I want maybe some bedazzling on the hem of the jacket, or…I dunno. Just something to jazz it up. (FOR HER, I’m saying. Not in real life.)

  • Anonymous

I’d like to see more of her eyes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.council Rachel Council

It’s… too normal. I’m sorry, I like Gaga as wackadoodle as she comes. Throw some teal hair or lobster claw shoes or an Illuminati-approved headdress on and I’m with you, but this is far too sedate.
