Katie Holmes for H. Stern

Katie Holmes for H. Stern
Katie Holmes posing for the jewelry company H. Stern new campaign shot by Tom Munro.

These shots of Katie, for H. Stern’s new ad campaign, certainly make her look beautiful (because she is; in the circus that is her private life, it seems like we forget what an old school beauty she is), but they also make her look somewhat shockingly harsh. At first we thought she looked old in these pictures, but as with all ad campaigns, her skin is as taut and smooth as a fetus’s, so that’s not it. It’s more like she looks exhausted. We don’t really buy the idea that she’s some sort of trapped victim in her marriage. Whatever’s going on there, she’s where she wants to be and doesn’t strike us as an unhappy person, so we’re not trying to put some salacious gossipy backstory on these pics. They’re very arresting shots and we’d probably stop and stare at them if we came upon them, but only to figure out why Katie looks simultaneously beautiful and worn-out at the same time. Then again, given the public’s perception of her, maybe that was a deliberate choice.

she barely looks human to me. it’s like looking at a wax figure.

      • Anonymous

I HATE Photoshop! She looks unreal.

        • http://twitter.com/amandaruth2001 Amanda Welliver

Her hands look like they belong on a mannequin.  Or a corpse.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BIVHXX542TDIE6ZACYMYNGMPCE Karen

          Photoshopped to death!

    • Now I am The Bee

Hmmm.   I think she look strikingly beautiful here.  Love it.

    • Now I am The Bee

You said it right–she is an old school beauty and is really gorgeous here.  Striking–love it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

She does look exhausted, and slightly put out, in an “I vahnt to be left alone!” kind of way.  She does look gorgeous, though, I agree.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Why are you so mad at me Kate? I don’t even read tabloids and I swear I don’t care if your daughter wears high heels!

    • Sobaika Mirza

      This is way harsh, Tai.

    • Anonymous

I think with the shape of her eye, the heavy-ish eye makeup on the undereye was a poor choice.  That said, she is still very beautiful.

      • Sobaika Mirza

Agreed. I have a similar issue, deep-set eyes and a prominent browbone that makes any heavy makeup look instead like I got punched in the face. The makeup + pulled back hair make it a bit aging instead of Old Hollywood glamour. She’s still beautiful, but it pulls too much focus from the jewelry, which is supposed to be the focus of the advert.

    • Anonymous

Maybe it’s the languorous poses and the heavy eye lids that make her look like it’s hard for her to hold her head up and keep her eyes open.  These shots really show off the elegant angles of her face instead of her quirkiness.

    • Kelly Berryman

In the straight-on shots, I think the heavy makeup combined with the hair and hollowed out cheeks make her look older than she is. She looks young and fresh (though fond of bronzer) in the shots where she isn’t looking directly at the camera.

    • Anonymous

“Skin and taut and smooth as a fetus’s” – hee hee! Now available, only through Photoshop!

    • http://www.ttelroc.blogspot.com Kristin_The_Goat

      I honestly didn’t recognize her.

    • Anonymous

Pretty. Thoughtful and a little gloomy, but pretty.

    • Anonymous

To me it looks like an attempt to make a girl next door type look exotic or sophisticated.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

She looks much more mature here than she usually does. In public she’s still a 20-something. Here she looks like the classic beauty. I’m not sure I would have recognized her in all the pictures if she wasn’t named. Gorgeous, and different for her. I like it.

    • Anonymous

She definitely is a beauty. I like these pictures a lot.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

      But the jewelry is GORGEOUS.

    • Anonymous

she still looks like the same lopsided-mouth Joey Potter.

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

She looks like a woman. I sometimes forget how old she is; she grew up onscreen and then was swept into that Cruise mania (at least by the tabloids).

      • Pam Winters

I just had to look it up. IMDB says she was born in 1978.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks great in all of them – although I see what you’re talking about. The defining factor for me with her looking tired is when she’s looking very stern – it’s almost like she sets her jaw and her eyes just look exhausted in them.

      Still, she looks fantastic.

    • Emily Giovanni

Her eyes always look so sleepy!

    • Anonymous

Yeah, she looks gorg but they airbrushed the shit out of her, not only in terms of her spraytan/waxiness but in the sense that her cheekbones look unhuman.

    • Anonymous

She looks like a 50yo that has had all of her wrinkles photoshopped.  I think it is the styling and lack of emotion combined with very mature hair.  Either way, this is dull….

    • Anonymous

I would have never recognized her.

I think the heavy eye makeup, combined with “dead eyes” is responsible for the fatigued look.  She just looks like she’s not present in the photos.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=720086455 Sue Shea

        totally dead eyes

    • Sandie Kreiser

I just wish I knew who did her nose…

    • Anonymous

I think the word she’s trying to embody is “haunted”.  But you’re right – she’s showing “exhausted” instead.

      • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

she’s probably exhausted from holding so many un-natural poses for so long

    • Anonymous

I get the idea of dramatic makeup being noticeable, but something about this one was not well executed.

    • Anonymous

She looks like Linda Carter in a lot of these photos – they should have used her instead because L.C. BRINGS IT!

      • Nancy Abrams

The top one looks like Kristen Chenowith to me with the second one looking like Julie Andrews. She apparently is a blank canvas so that make-up artists can create whatever look they want. I never recognize her from one photo shoot to the next. I think there is no there there.

    • Judy_J

There certainly wasn’t a shortage of bronzer at this shoot, was there?  She looks like she’s suffering from a serious case of enui.

      • Anonymous

K is for Katie who died of ennui?

    • Erin Nice

I love that last shot of her.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I just think she has slightly downturned eyes. I don’t get the exhausted thing at all. I think she looks absolutely stunning, if a bit too airbrushed. But then, they’re jewelry ads so that’s fine with me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1094686382 Elizabeth Monroe Baker

      Kabuki mask

    • bookish

I want my eyebrows to look like hers.

      • Anonymous

With enough plucking and redrawing, they can!

    • Anonymous

Somehow I missed the episode where Katie Holmes did whatever it is that she does that makes her interesting independent of her husband.  I mean, I know she’s an actress, and I know she was in that Batman movie, but for the life of me, I have no impression of her beyond “Tom Cruise’s Beard/Wife.”

    • Anonymous

The old comes from a combination of a strong jaw and very little fat in her face. It produces a shape that is more characteristic of an older woman, which is independent of the tautness of the skin.

    • suzq

I agree with Ben.  She looks like a mannequin.  That’s the point, I think, so that the emphasis is on the jewelry.

    • Anonymous

I thought that was a Spanish woman – a gorgeous  Spanish woman, but not Katie Holmes. I don’t like when people are made to not look like themselves. It seems to happen a lot nowadays with photoshopping.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LJAFNCSWWSA6MOS56GBAFQB7PU kitkats75

It’s highly photoshopped (obviously) but if that’s what “worn out” looks like, I’ll take that over MY “worn out” look ANY DAY. I think it’s the shape of her eyes (turned down at the outer corner) that is bringing her look down but she’s gorgeous (even without the photoshopping).

    • CQAussie

I almost didn’t recognise her.  At least she’s not smirking?  These are hardly high praise.  She looks good here but I’m confused at why so harsh and/or glum?  Crack a smile maybe?  The jewelry look fab though.

    • Pam Winters

Well, she looks serious, I’ll give you that. But she looks healthier than I’ve seen her look in a while, and she looks very adult–she’s been one of those “cute girls” who sometimes don’t age well, so I like seeing her look all grown up and sophisticated.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The first picture is entirely too harsh.  I think you could sharpen my kitchen knives on those jaw bones. However, thanks to H. Stern for reminding us that outside of the frumpzilla that she portrays in her real life, she is absolutely gorgeous when someone else takes the reigns and forces her into make up and grown up clothes.  Lose the baggy jeans girl.  This is your calling.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

She’s beautiful in these photos, but she doesn’t look real. I love the shot of her back.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m not getting tired, I’m getting mature.  Meant to be aspirational for aging wealthy matriarchs mature.  Flawless, but very, very studied.

    • Anonymous

This is a lesson in how not to contour makeup.  Yikes.  I like how in the first shot her nose looks kind of like it was before her nose job.  She had such a great nose before they made it a pointy Hollywood nose.

    • Anonymous

This is a specific setting that forces a look which obviously is not her at all. Also, the photoshopping highlights the nose job she’s had. If this campaign aims at the overly rich and plastic, it succeeds at its goal, but H. Stern is not Bulgari. Color me perplexed.

    • MilaXX

It’s pretty but a very sharp, harsh look.  I think she’s a crappy actress, but whatever.

    • Anonymous

She is absolutely gorgeous here, but I agree that her strong bone structure combined with the photoshopping make her look like an older woman who’s had her imperfections photoshopped away, rather than a young-ish woman (she’s into her 30’s) who’s had her imperfections photoshopped away.

    • Susan Crawford

There’s no denying that bone structure – Katie IS a gorgeous woman. But the amount of photoshop is way over the top here. The Svedka fembot has more expression than Mrs. TomKat. The jewellry is just beautiful – I’ve always been a huge H. Stern fan, and this ad campaign is (despite the photoshopping) visually arresting.

I think Katie always looks exhausted. I suppose trying to keep up with Tiny Tom and his continuing quest to remain relevant is part of it. Then there’s the rigor of making sure Suri gets to her mani-pedi appointment in enough time so her polish will be dry before hitting the toy store. Not to mention having to cram in those pesky Scientology auditing sessions and the daily ingestion of barley water. It’s a tiring existence, indeed, to be Katie. (But dayum – I would kill for those cheekbones.)

    • Anonymous

It’s her eyes.  Tyra would be telling her so smize!

    • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

She is a beautiful woman (when she’s properly styled). I only find her irritating as an actress, so if she’d like to stand still for pretty pictures that’s fine by me.

    • Anonymous

      No.

    • Anonymous

      Bitch face.

    • Anonymous

Hmm. She does look like she’s carrying the weight of some kind of responsibility. Severe and determined. I think it’s actually a smart take that makes her look different and arresting (versus both her image and the average shoot).

    • Anonymous

I think it is that heavy, 1980s-ish makeup that is making her look exhausted: all that cheek, nose, jawline contouring just adds all that shadow to her face.

She looks best in that last shot. Her face looks more relaxed.

    • Anonymous

Also, that second picture is really reminding me of a brunette version of a middle-aged edition of Julie Andrews. Which is not actually a bad thing.

      • Nancy Abrams

I commented the same thing before I read your entry. I’m not sure people realize how beautiful Julie was (and still is).

    • Anonymous

She looks like we should be calling her Katherine rather than Katie.

    • Anonymous

Too much makeup. Her cheeks look hollow. I didn’t recognize her.

    • Anonymous

I guess a lot of people just see her for her baggage, but I think she does a great job selling the jewelry.  If I didn’t know who she was, my first thought would be “what an interesting face” and then “ooooooh I like those pieces!”

    • Anonymous

Now this is some beautiful jewelry. The two large cuffs have much more style and subtlety than anything produced yet on PA.

I did not recognize her. At all. Makes me wish that a photo editor could get ahold of me and photoshop the hell out of my face, just so I could fantasize what I *might* look like.

    • Anonymous

it’s not her fault but boy is that some bad photoshop.
it’s like the stuff that gets advertised all over the internet to people who dont actually know photoshop or who dont have the patience to learn it properly. software that puts the vaseline in the sludge, if you will. that takes the effort out of making skin look like skin. when a terribly influential segment of our culture does this to the people about whom they purport to report it makes me wonder why we bother having people in magazines at all. we could make up backstories for animatronics & acheive the same ends. then again, we could just do it all w/ 3d animation & skip the actual three dimensionality, entirely. so much easier that.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

It’s a wonder there are jobs left out there for makeup artists. They can just put it in after the fact.

    • Anonymous

You say worn-out.  I say lobotomized.

    • Anonymous

She looks so severe…that’s a lot of bronzer. The style of jewelery does call for an elegant woman…not a cute, wholesome girl, so in that regard it works.  She does look pretty, but the blank stare in all the pics is off-putting.

    • Anonymous

These are striking photos and the jewelry is gorgeous.

Wow  I’m a bit stunned – she can look beautiful.

I always think she looks tired and goofy with that smirk of hers.

    • Anonymous

She certainly is classically beautiful here, but that first pic in particular really does have a harshness to it that kind of cries out “rich bitch.”  I can just see her being brutal to the help, sweeping past all the people who open doors for her, and getting waiters fired all over town.  Kind of a Leona Helmsley in training.  Definitely a change-up in her image, but not in a good way.

Of course, I realize “rich bitch” is a pretty go-to means of selling jewels and furs, but it’s not how I like to define “fierce”!

    • A. Afarensis

I think the super heavy make-up does age her (particularly in that first shot), and that the profile shots work better than the face forward shots because of it.

Yet… I can honestly say the 4th picture down made me want both the necklace and Katie Holmes. And since I never wear jewelry and have never been attracted to Katie Holmes before, that’s some pretty effective advertising.

    • http://twitter.com/polevaulter94 Renee Alexander

Gorgeous… My god, just simply gorgeous. I think the “harsh” aspect kinda adds to how striking she looks.

    • Anonymous

She’s too thin. She looks hongray.

    • Anonymous

Beautiful, but I never would have known it was her.

    • bloodshothalfblind

it’s her eyes.  they lack any emotion. theyre just cold & vacant.  she needs to learn how to smize.

    • Anonymous

She looks bronzer’d and photoshopped within an inch of her life.

    • Anonymous

That’s some hardcore photoshop. They even took the ‘wrinkles’ out of her knuckles. I don’t think that version of her could bend her fingers… I kind of hate that severe cheek contouring look on anyone, but that’s a personal gripe. I think it’s very aging. I do like the 3rd shot a lot, though.

    • http://www.fatladysings.us/ TFLS

I love the jewelry.  She looks kinda blank – but then so do most models.  I don’t like the ‘nobody’s home’ affect – whether it was photographer’s choice or mere serendipity.  I can’t imagine that’s what H. Stern was after.  Jewelry’s supposed to make a person look better – not one of the living dead.

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

i think they were going for a more…deep katie holmes type..

    • Anonymous

oh mrs cruise, you done and drank the not-s0- co0l aid.

    • Anonymous

The images are certainly beautiful, but I don’t feel like I’m even looking at a real person.

    • Anonymous

She’s a very beautiful woman. Not a great model, she looks pretty vacant. But man, this sure illustrates how badly she needs to stop wearing her own designs and get a stylist. HUGE improvement when someone knows what they’re doing.

    • Anonymous

Her cheeks look sunken and hollow. Lay off the dark blush, guys.

    • Anonymous

Very pretty but this photo essay makes me sad for Katie. I really think she is was about to come into her own after being a teen star then Tom Cruise and his cult got their claws into her. I really enjoyed Pieces of April. She really left her Dawson Creek character behind when she took on that role. Funny how post Tom she doesn’t do any slightly daring roles now.

    • Anonymous

Interesting. The set of her mouth here helps me to understand her customary smirk better: she’s trying to settle the lines of her face into something friendly-looking. These photos show that her mouth has a naturally frowny line to it. Decidedly lopsided, lush lips and downward sloping almond eyes — I think she looks gorgeous.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I don’t know if she looks tired as much as just angry… especially in that first shot. It’s like she’s sending hate/death rays straight from her eyes to the photographer.

    • Natasha Fairweather

Uncanny valley creepy. That’s not a human.

    • Anonymous

I think they went with Too Much Bronzer and it really goes against her natural coloring. Ow. She is very pretty, but she’s on the pink side in real life, and making her look so orange makes her look ruddy and tired.

    • Anonymous

As with many other of the minions, if you hadn’t identified these photos as being of Katie Holmes, I would never have known.  obviously she’s gone from her “perky cute young woman” phase into a more mature one, but I don’t think these photos do her much justice. I get a distinct Stepford Wives vibe here. The jewelry looks a lot more alive than she does!

    • Anonymous

Not a fan of armpit photos.

    • Anonymous

      Duran Duran album cover.

    • Anonymous

If you hadn’t told me, I would have never know who it was. She does look beautiful, but at the same time sort of closer in age to Tom than she is. She certainly doesn’t look like the mother of a five year old. But wonderful shots in my mind even though I know there is no person with that skin.

      • Anonymous

Amen!  That robotic looking skin that is so popular in ads nowadays irritates and creeps me out at the same time.

    • http://twitter.com/younglibrarian Katie Dunneback

I would have gone with a lighter color under her eyes as the shading they chose to do emulates bags under the eyes and *greatly* ages her. I recognized her, but also thought that she looked about 10 to 15 years older than she really is.

    • Anonymous

I see it more as ‘untouchable statue / rich bitch out of your league’ sort of thing. She looks great.

    • http://twitter.com/Ash2046 Ashley Wu

I can’t see beauty in these shots mainly because I think she looks very tense..it’s like there’s some tension in all the pictures, like she is trying to relax but can’t…or maybe it’s just the way her facial expression is

    • Anonymous

They’ve given her the cheekbones of Cameron Diaz. I don’t know why they just didn’t shoot Cameron Diaz.

    • Anonymous

Love that last necklace that drapes down the back!

    • Anonymous

I think the photos are a perfect example of why she should give up on trying to be fashionista, and hire a good stylist.  She IS an old-school beauty her usual half-assed clothes and hairstyle choices mask it.

As for the old/young conundrum, I think it’s the faraway expression in her eyes.

    • Anonymous

Very Florinda Bulcao who than became Florinda Bolkan.  And H. Stern … Very Brazil — or Brasil as we call it at our house.  She looks beautiful.  And I think the fact the jewelry becomes secondary is a plus.  Jewelry should always appear secondary.  I love a good looking not bright red manicure too and photo shopped or not her nails are to die for.  Sigh.

    • Anonymous

I dunno.  To me, Katie Holmes has always looked a lot older than she is, and I thought that even before she got on the Tom Cruise Merry-Go-Round.

It’s something about how the lines of her eyes and her lips go slightly down,   Then when she lost weight the lines of her face became more austere.

But, a lot of it in this photo is the styling and the makeup too.

    • Lisa

She looks awfully thin, but still, these photos are gorgeous.

    • http://twitter.com/mellafe natalia h

      She looks defeated.

    • http://twitter.com/TwiterlessTerri Terri

As beautiful as she is, I notice the jewelry first, and that makes it a successful ad IMO.

    • Mary McClelland

I think she looks stunning and I think she is channeling Jackie Kennedy. Seeing these photos is the first time – and the only time – I could envision her in the role as America’s Queen. Although I still think her acting abilities would obliterate the role as she is so one-note! Anyways, lovely pictures. Beautiful woman.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

The make up is really harsh and ages her, I think. I don’t like any pictures except the very last shot. The pieces are BEAUTIFUL, though. I wants them all!
