In or Out: Zooey Deschanel in Miu Miu

Posted on November 09, 2011

Man, we tried to sit through that sitcom of hers because the critics seemed to love it, but we didn’t even make it through 15 minutes. But hey, she’s wearing the Miu Miu glitter pumps we featured here and it’s always nice to get a followup on a “Yea or Nay” post to see how the item looks in the real world, like, say, TV Guide party red carpets.

Zooey Deschanel in Miu MiuZooey Deschanel attends the 2011 TV Guide Magazine Hot List Party in West Hollywood, California in head-to-toe Miu Miu.

Zooey Deschanel in Miu Miu

Zooey Deschanel in Miu Miu

Zooey Deschanel in Miu Miu

If ever a girl was born to wear those glitter pumps, that girl would be Zooey. The dress is cute on paper, but for some reason looks like she just too it out of the bottom of a box stored under her bed. Very flat and wrinkled-looking And we don’t love the carseat belt she’s sporting. Something a little sassier around the waist (plus some steaming) would have helped this look a lot. We’re not entirely sold on the coalminer’s daughter hair she’s been sporting lately, but it’s a look and she’s got a character to sell, so we can live with it. Kittens make the final call.

Vote Now!
IN! She’s an adorable alterna-pixie!

OUT! She looks like she slept in that outfit.

Voting on Florence Welch’s overwhelming dress is still open, poodles. Ripping on celebrity fashion choices builds strong bones and boosts the immune system.

Glitter pumps look like an Etsy trailer park craft project.  Like someone went berserk in the sewing section at Wal Mart. out.

      • Anonymous

to me they look like the high heels version of the glittery flats I get for my 6 yo daughter at Target (pink, silver, or golden) for $12….. not good…

Out – There is a parade in New Orleans called the Krewe of Muses. The ladies throw glittered shoes. This one looks better than Zoey’s shoes.

I have a Muses shoe on my shelf at work. :)

        • Anonymous

Dang, they weren’t throwing glitter shoes back when I was able to go to Muses parades every year.  Clearly, I need a return trip to Mardi Gras so a glitter shoe can join our Zulu coconut collection!

1.) That show is HILARIOUS. Obviously last night’s episode was not the one you tried to watch. I’m still laughing about it.
2.) The dress looks very bridesmaid-y and doesn’t really go with the shoes.

Schmidt is my favorite! Parkour! Parkour!

I was just going to write this very same thing!

Agree – Schmidt makes that show.  Favorite character for sure.  Cute dress but I am not feeling the outfit all put together – OUT

It is pretty funny. But I can see it getting old pretty quick. There’s definitely a “will-they-or-won’t-they” vibe and I hate those.

      • Anonymous

They cracked a “127 Hours” joke. Everytime I think I’m getting tired of that show, they slip in something like that.

When Zooey’s character Schmooey scares they living daylights out of the black dude with her singing, I thought I was having an asthma attack.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

You two have been busy today! Goodness! Isn’t it time to feed the kitties and have a glass of wine? But before I do, yes, she looks cute. Yes, she is ‘IN’ but I hate the belt and even she looks tired of the hair. They’ll probably have an episode when she cuts it all off. Drama!!

    • Jennifer Alderman

1.) That show is HILARIOUS. Obviously last night’s episode was not the one you tried to watch. I’m still laughing about it.
2.) The dress looks very bridesmaid-y and doesn’t really go with the shoes. Sadly I am going with an OUT.

I really really tried to like her sitcom, and sat through 3 episodes.  Then I realized that I did not have room for it in my life.  Sorry Zooey.  But I’m still watching your sister.

Her hair and her dress seem equally ruffled, but there is something missing for me.  Accessories?  Perhaps she was en route to the Lifetime Channel to introduce the challenge for the next episode of Project Accessory.

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Bones is her aunt, not her sister.  Love her!!

        • Anonymous

Is that a joke?  Emily D. is Zoey’s older sister. Bones was bad enough, with women scientists and forensic experts who look like models.  The promos for New Girl make it look unwatchable.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

How can it not be an OUT? It could have been cute, but the wrinkles just take it out of any possible IN territory.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1052062518 Megan Moore

Out. Rumpled mess of a dress, and that hair is a big fat no. But I do love the shoes.

How does she make something so shiny look so frumpy? Out.

    • Anonymous

In. Cute and definitely the heavy lifting was done by the shoes. Would have loved a better belt, but could have easily gotten too fussy.

    • Sara__B

She’s such a cutie, but she’s often a mess on the red carpet. The hair’s too big and the dress is a mess but at least she’s not wearing tights! OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

Quasi-IN. Shoes work with the dress, but wrinkles are lazy.

    • MilaXX

Hate her show. Watched the first episode and it was just too much Zooey for me. Oddly enough I like Raising Hope which follows it, so I turn back and catch that. As to the outfit, it’s an OUT. The shoes are cute, but the dress doesn’t live up to them. That dress is an out of the box, wrinkled mess. Even if it wasn’t wrinkled I don;t think it’s glam enough.

      • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

I could have written this, haha! I barely got through the first 5 minutes of the pilot of her show. I couldn’t stand it and – at the risk of being burned at the stake – I can’t really stand Zooey at all. I love Raising Hope, though.

The dress isn’t bad, it IS super wrinkled, though. I do like the shoes but this was definitely not the dress for them.

    • Anonymous

she’s surprisingly good in her show, methinks. but you do have to put in the time, that’s for sure. it gets better. i promise. This outfit is better than most of hers, so, IN.

    • kerry dee

      zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…what? sorry. so boring….

    • Alyson Lamble

Would have worked better if the shoes had been silver, not gold.  That particular shade of gold really doesn’t work with the dress. I like the rest of the look so she gets an IN from me.

Show definitely improves.  Maybe give it another go, starting with this week’s episode?

    • Pinup Ghoul

      WERQ. Girl is adorafierce.
I want that dress. Zooey and I are the same size, do you think she’d loan it to me? I could take or leave the shoes, though. Maybe they’re too chunky for me. How cute would this have been with some maroon t-straps?

    • http://twitter.com/HotMessHousWife Sammi M

IN. I think she looks cute!

    • Anonymous

Like her, like the dress, still hate the shoes, loathe the hair.  I think that adds up to an OUT.

How can Michelle Williams be called “twee” when Zooey Deshanel exists?

      • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

INNN. Though yeah, it needs steaming.

I don’t like the pumps or the dress or her Manic Pixie Dream Girl persona. So so so so so very irritating.

    • Anonymous

      Oh, and OUT.

    • Anonymous

Yes, the dress needs steaming but other than that, I love the whole thing.  I dig her hair, it’s a signature look that works for her.  And try the show again, it is quirky and fun AND….. the boys always manage to be shirtless and sometimes pantsless.

    • http://www.facebook.com/robin.layton Robin D. Layton

I like this look but the wrinkles mess it up.

I think the hair looks good on her. Your description of the dress right out of a box from under the bed is dead on. I do like the color. The shoes… the proportions don’t work for me, although I like the gold glitter idea. Clunky footwear has been the vogue for a while now, so I expect I’m a lone voice here. Overall, I’d guess I’d give her a lukewarm IN, though. She’s mighty cute, and that color goes with her eyes so well.

I meant to add that I couldn’t make it five minutes into her show, so you did better than I did. The only worse “hit” of the season is the waitress thing. I think I only lasted three minutes on that one.

    • Anonymous

      egad, OUT.

as y’all said, on paper, it works but it’s definitely not working here. her head is too little to small sport hair that embodies the “closer to god” school of styling, and i feel like the punps would look better on a woman with a shaplier leg. they’re not bad on her, but everything (including her “who me?” cute 5 year-old poses) conspire to make her look … somehow shabby and diminished.

    • http://profiles.google.com/emily.w.sings Emily Wilkerson

Absolutely out. I agree with you about the shoes, but I don’t like the dress or the belt and the hair is terrible.

Hate her hair, hate the belt, hate the shoes.  The dress…looks sad.

    • Anonymous

Out. That dress is way too flat. It looks like she mailed herself to the event. I don’t like the belt, either. Hair and makeup are great, though. Still not fond of those shoes. Way too much like the Target glitter shoes that are all the rage among the preschool set.

Her show is kind of cute, though. My daughter likes it, so I watch it with her. The characters are finally hitting their stride. Certainly not a must-see show, but fun enough.

    • Anonymous

I think it’s a wrong-belt situation. The flatness (color and material) of it next to the draping makes the skirt look too shiny and wrinkled. A shame, too. But that one thing (plus the hair) is enough to make it an OUT for me.

    • Anonymous

She’s IN. I actually like the hair and the shoes and can get over the rumply dress because she’s ZOOEY, ya’ll. I love her new show, too – even my husband thinks it’s funny (and he’s hard to please with comedy).

I love this outfit!  But I do not love her hair.  I wonder if a ponytail with some volume would have been a better choice?  And show off the dress better?  Her big hair is almost obliterating the dress.  I love those pumps and love her in them! If it isn’t obvious…..I vote this IN!

Those glitter pumps turn out to be the perfect show for Manic Pixie Dream Girls, who like to show up at functions giving off the indefinable air of “I repurposed those glittery shoes I got at the Halloween store as red carpet wear! Because I’m just that quirky!”

Um, anyway, OUT. I don’t even think it looks all that great.

    • http://twitter.com/megelizah Megan Howard

The first episode was not that funny but it’s gotten a lot better. the last couple episodes it was basically a steady stream of giggles from me. As for the pumps, I love them. I have the grey pair that are half glitter, half suede; I get compliments on them all the time! But I guess I understand why some people might not like them.

    • Anonymous

Definitely an IN. The dress is cute enough and the shoes are GREAT on her.

    • Rand Ortega

I watched “New Girl” for the 1st time last night & I just don’t get it. A bunch of dumb slackers on a couch trying to out hip each other. Give me “Modern Family” (Sofia Vergara is delicious & Eric Stonestreet should win every award they can throw at him) or “Bored To Death” (Patton Oswalt, Jonathan Schwartzman, Zach Freakin’ Galifianakis & Ted Danson @ his sexiest– that’s quirky, hipster cool) any day of the week.
Her dress looks like a shiny Girl Scout uniform w/ ruffles. I hate it. Accessories could’ve have helped, but I doubt it. The shoes… had the top part of her looked better I might have bothered to look down.

I’m torn. It’s not that she looks bad (although I don’t actually like the shoes). But she looks like she should be at the Country Music Awards. Again, no slam on country stars, but… yeah. Wrong venue. If she looked like that all the time, it would be different. Guess I’m just puzzled. Hard to vote.

Still nay on the pumps, but you must watch the show. The episode “Naked” had me in tears I was laughing so hard.

Can I give her an OUT just because I think a woman over thirty should stop looking and acting like a sexy little girl?  Or maybe just because the shoes (which are awful) remind me about just how horrible Tin Man was?  I do really love the color and shape of the dress on her.  But otherwise, Zooey, you’ll always be out to me until you stop with the Lolita shtick.

Bad dress (-1), awful belt (-2), cute shoes (+1), boring/too heavy hair (-1) = OUT.

      • Melvis Velour

I totally agree with the Math…and I was a Math Major

    • http://twitter.com/capt_shiny Mags

The whole thing looks slouchy. I like the dress, but not with that belt, not with those shoes and not with that hair. I’m going with OUT.

    • Ellie Taylor

Uuuugh…the big blue veins sticking out of her tortured feet utterly ruins any of the glamor these pumps have for me.

I love her and she can do no wrong in my eyes. I love her hair and want it badly, her makeup is on point, and those shoes, well, I feel not many could pull them off but somehow they’re right for her.

(We won’t speak much of the dress. But I don’t find it horrible.)

PS TLo & others. Try to give the New Girl another chance. I think my roommates got concerned last night when they heard my stifled giggling and squawking at last night’s hilarious episode.

    • Anonymous

Man, I just cringe every time I see her. Couldn’t sit through 15 minutes of the show, either.

But is it cotton, the fabric of our lives?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Claudia-Gilbert/875055316 Claudia Gilbert

I’m weirded out by how much darker her legs are than any other part of her body.  And the shoes look too chunky to be glamourous.  I’m aware that doesn’t make much sense out of the confines of my brain.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1264609232 Samantha Ritchie

      IN! super cute

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Out.  I have never seen her on the red carpet in anything I liked.

    • Anonymous

What the holy hell is wrong with hair? It looks like a wig. Too heavy.

      Out

    • Anonymous

I totally want a pair of those glitter pumps in red. And then I’ll just click my heels and my shoes will whisk me away to some place fabulous.
      Shoes: IN!
      Everything else: OUT!

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

I love her, but it’s still an OUT. She just looks messy here.

      • Anonymous

I love her too and that why it hurts, but OUT.

    • Anonymous

I’ve never seen the show but the only positive reviews I hear are from people who look like her or want to date her. Anyway I think she’s one of few who can pull this look off. IN

    • Anonymous

      You boys were busy yesterday!

I love the outfit, although a steamer would have been useful to fluff up those Judy Noodles ruffles. Loved the MiuMiu pumps when they were featured on TLo and I like them here. And I absolutely LOVE that belt!  It’s a belt from the late 1950s–all the girls on the earliest days of “American Bandstand” wore that belt with their long circle skirts or pencil skirts and sweater sets, and when I was a kid in Philadelphia, I dreamed of the day when I’d be old enough to wear outfits like that, including that great cinch belt, and be on that show.

So partly because of nostalgia, she’s an IN for me.

The hair is bad, but it’s character hair for her show, so waddyagonnado?

    • Anonymous

I love her… but I can’t sit through that show either!!  And I’m getting tired of the hair as well… sweet Zooey, you are testing my patience!! Those shoes are silly… they remind me of the glittered up shoes sold at the Nordstrom’s children’s department.  The dress is simply a blue dress… end of discussion!

    • Anonymous

IN!  I love this on her.

    • http://profiles.google.com/laurenjeanstm Lauren St Martin

Not a great OUTfit. But that show is freakin hilarious.

    • Cathy S

Out. I actually like the shoes though.

    • Anonymous

I don’t even like the shoes – they look like they came out of a 3 year old’s dress up box (after being purchased at the dollar store).

    • Anne Lucchesi

All I can think is that I hate how high the vamp is on those shoes. I like the round toe but the high vamp makes them look kiddie to me.

    • Anonymous

I love the show, actually. And I hate those shoes. They look like old lady shoes, you know some Easy Spirit pumps that they sprayed with some glitter paint.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K7VOQSAYZ7H2OBX6LOJNNIBSSE Amanda

Love her, hate the outfit! OUT.

    • Anonymous

IN IN IN. Without the shoes, no. But with the shoes, since they are referential of Marge Simpson for God’s Sake, somehow the blue dress and the cartoony hair totally do it for me. The belt is unfortunate. But since I have wanted to be Zooey Deschanel since I saw Almost Famous when I was 15, I dont think I can bear to give her an out.

    • Anonymous

Enh, I don’t like any of it. I may have changed my mind on those shoes; they just look clunky to me now.
She definitely took a nap in that dress a couple of hours before the party. It’s a wrinkled mess.
      Coalminer’s daughter hair is hilarious!

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

O U T! Those cute glitter pumps couldn’t save this look.

    • Anonymous

      Shush! Her hair is adorable.

I agree with everything else — fab shoes, cute dress that needs a little tending, poor belt choice — but it still adds up to an IN for me. But I think I have a soft spot for her, so.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1042716137 Jenny Stark

Watched The New Girl–not gonna lie–laughed my ass off.

    • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.council Rachel Council

Eh, those shoes are veering closer to tacky than whimsical, but what really needs talking about is that hair. She looks like she’s got about six Bump-Its in there.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thekate Kate Musgrove

I hate the belt but I can tolerate everything else, so it’s a reluctant in from me.

    • Grace Ritt

      IN! I love the pumps.

    • http://twitter.com/lemonfreshmoxie Donna Lee

The shoes are strictly craft project like others have said.  Dress is sad.  Show sucks.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

Out.  The only thing I like is the glitter pumps, and even those don’t look right with the extra-gigantic hair and wrinkled mess she’s wearing.

    • Anonymous

Out. The pumps look heavy, the ruffles look like they formed accidentally when fabric got caught in the belt, and her hair is eating her head.

    • betty language

      “coalminer’s daughter hair”
this is why i read this blog–you two kill me.

    • Anonymous

IN! Actually like the show too.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jenna-Ryan-Boatman/583622701 Jenna Ryan Boatman

In. I love her and her show, mainly because this is the way I tend to dress (right down to the wrinkles, unfortunately, if I am stupid enough to wear silk. I wiggle around too much.)

    • Anonymous

Far from a “werq” but I like it. In.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

I still want those red glitter Capezio shoes.  They would have been sweet for my tap class in first grade.

So yes, the shoes are IN.  The dress is very Zoe, so it’s IN.

      But the hair’s ridiculously full.

    • Aly Light

I have lost patience with her, but I think she looks cute here. IN, although it’s the kind of outfit that I might wear on a Friday night. Oh well. IN.

    • Anonymous

In.  LOVE HER.  I think I say this every time.  My husband and I fight over her gets her now that she and her husband are divorcing.

    • Rachelle Neame

She’s In. That dress isn’t particularly wrinkled and she’s still pulling it off (definitely not werq-ing it as much as she could though). She could probably use some posing help.

    • Anonymous

OUT. Doesn’t read celebrity. Looks like something I would have work in the late 80′s/early 90′s.

    • http://profiles.google.com/laura.jane.ogorman Laura O’Gorman

      That hair just…I can’t…

    • Margaret Skipp

IN! She looks super cute as per usual.

    • Anonymous

In. I don’t like the hair, but the rest is adorable. I like the belt, it looks like Josh’s scuba wear belt from PR.

    • http://www.facebook.com/erin.kristoff Erin Kristoff

      IN!

    • Anonymous

Meh. Leaning toward out. Couldn’t get through her show, either, btw.

Would have LOVED to have had those shoes when I was involved in a production of The Great American Trailer Park Musical! Although our costume budget didn’t really run to Miu Miu. ;-)

    • Anonymous

Zooey, step away from the bump it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

In.  She’s adorable.  I’m so sad about her show – it does suck.  I’ve watched it a few times and tried hard to like it, but it’s bad.  Sigh.

    • Anonymous

IN for the shoes alone! The inner child wants those!

    • Anonymous

IN. I don’t care what the kittens say, I love the glitter pumps.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Out.  There isn’t one thing about this outfit that I like.  And I truly dislike whatever she’s done to her hair~!

    • Judy_J

I think she’s adorable, but I can’t like this limp dress and bad ’70′s hair.  Sadly, OUT.

    • Anonymous

Don’t like the limpness of the dress at all or the belt–but love the color and the shoes–so on those things alone I give her an IN.

    • Cristin Colvin

Zooey is my goddess and will always be an IN.

    • Cristin Colvin

Zooey is my goddess and will always be an IN.

Out.  Shoes that fabulous should not be accompanied by a dishwater dull dress.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

      Out

    • Alloy Jane

No to the glitter shoes.  Not just due to the arts & crafts glitter, but the shape of the shoe is bleh, the dress looks two-dimensional, and her hair has too many bump-its.  So much as I love her, it’s an OUT for me.

Also, the show is HILARIOUS.  Holy moly the wedding episode had me laughing for at least five minutes.

    • Susan Crawford

Honestly, I would have to give this look an OUT, although I love those shoes so much I would hurt someone to snag a pair in silver. Really, it’s the dress that I don’t get. It needs to be – you should excuse the term – fluffed a little. A little more volume in the skirt would perk up this dress considerably. And T & Lo are right also about that belt. Something with a bit more glam – or maybe a pop of color – would also do wonders. And although I normally envy Zooey’s wonderful, shiny hair, this style renders her top-heavy .

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

i dont care for her outfit, ive never really liked her at all but her show is actually surprisingly very good! so i just had to defend that

    • http://toodles.yelp.com AWStevens

The commercials for her sitcom look ghastly so I never tried to watch it… Isn’t she getting divorced?  She always looks WAY too happy.  Skinny bitches can wear anything.  IN

    • Anonymous

IN. She is just too darn cute to get an out.

    • Anonymous

In because I love the dress. the belt and shoes look cheap

    • vmcdanie

In. Like the dress and the pumps (but probably wouldn’t like them on anyone else.)

Have to say, that show of hers charms the pants off of me. But I recommended it to a male friend and he too turned it off around 15 minutes into the premiere. Have you tried watching it past the first episode? There is far less crying.

    • Anonymous

LOVE the shoes, HATE that sad sack of a dress!  OUT

    • Anonymous

IN.   Love the dress and i think she looks darling in those shoes.  It’s not her fault they’ve got her against that dark backdrop.  I hate the way she’s standing.  It might be part of the problem.  Still, IN.

    • Patricia Biswanger

      OUT.
