In or Out: Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann

Posted on November 29, 2011

Darlings, we’re about to commit fashion heresy, but we think Tilda might be in a bit of a style rut. We actually turned down the opportunity to feature Tilda here a couple of times recently because what she was wearing didn’t really excite us. Can you imagine?

Tilda Swinton attends the IFP’s 21st annual Gotham Independent Film awards in New York City in Haider Ackermann.

See, we totally dig her form of androgyny. It works really well with her features and she’s found a way to make herself – an attractive, but otherwise not head-turning woman – into something strange and beautiful and intriguing. But we liked it more when she was sporting the minimal makeup and Bowie hair with some sort of wild or unusual gown. The juxtaposition really worked. But if you sport the androgynous look with a pantsuit (which she’s been doing a lot lately), it just feels sort of … expected. There are things we like here, but the overall look doesn’t grab us. If she’d worn that exact coat and blouse with a long slim skirt with a slit up to her thigh and a pair of kickass shoes, we’d be screaming “WERQ it!” from the top of our lungs. But when you pair them with a balloony pair of pants and simple black pumps, it just looks … average.

And Tilda Swinton, we think you’ll agree, should never look average.

Vote Now!

IN! “AVERAGE?!?” Where have YOU bitches been hanging out lately?

OUT! Pegged, pleated pants are a pernicious problem!

Voting is still open on Charlize Theron’s half-assed (in our opinion) red carpet look.

  • This needs to get filed under “Girl, that’s not your dress.” She’s Tilda. She’s fabulous. But that’s not her outfit. OUT

    • Those aren’t her pants. And quite honestly, I don’t want to know whose they are. Oh Tilda, you’re so blazingly hot and stylish, it’s terribly disappointing to see you fail so badly.

  • Anonymous

No one does butch like Tilda.

  • MilaXX

IN Tilda on a bad day still wipes the floor with half of Hollywood.

  • Anonymous

Agree with your comments completely. Bring back old school Swinton!!!!

  • Anonymous

I’d like to see it on the Bieber. Then we might have something there.

    Out, as you say.

  • Anonymous

IN.  She has more style and confidence than half the other “stars” featured here combined.  WERQ it girl!  Own your look.

  • Hardly average. I get what you’re saying but she looks great. IN!

  • Anonymous

OUT.  The jacket rocks, everything else flops.

  • Anonymous

great jacket. she looks pretty fierce even though it’s become somewhat of a signature look, and not really an original one. Is anyone truly original these days, though, besides GaGa and Helena BC?

  • Sarah Lynnae

A weak In. It’s great except for the pants. I hate the pants.

  • Renee Bender

If anyone can work those pants, it’s Tilda.  Plus, I’m loving the jacket – IN.

  • Anonymous

I see what you mean, but her hair is short, her bone structure is what it is, and she can’t go around in gowns all the time, can she? Well, maybe she can. She’s Tilda Swinton, after all.

That said, the hammer pants and Golden Girls duster aren’t exactly giving me a woody.

  • Anonymous

Love the jacket, but I agree with y’all’s assessment. On the other other hand, she still looks awesome. In.

  • Anonymous

I’d love it without the jacket.

    But SWINTON still looks fabulous.

  • foodycat

I’m sorry, no. I think she is amazing but that jacket is just too 80s and I am unhappy about the pants.

  • IN because shes flawless and I want that jacket in my closet right now. Although those pants D: but since this is swinton were talking about, Ill let her pass.

  • Anonymous

If that’s “average,” then the 49% of the population who are above-average must live on another planet.  IN.

  • Anonymous

God I love her hair. And the outfit. IN.

  • Anonymous

IN.  And that coat is very cool.

  • Anonymous

No. She looks like a very ill David Bowie.

    • Anonymous

Hmm. I thought that was the good part.

    • This. I don’t dislike her outfit as much as her shiny forehead here. Mind you, I love her Bowie looks, but she does seem like she’s not feeling that well.

  • In. She’s being Swinton at the Parent Teacher Conference, but it is Swinton nonetheless.

  • I desperately covet that coat. I have no opinion – I’m sorry, I’m a terrible unborn faun – so I abstain from voting. I just want that coat so damn bad.

  • Anonymous

    Meh, lukewarm. Out.
    I like editorial Tilda.

  • She looks like an ’80s lead singer of a synth-pop band, in a good way. I think she’s almost always “in” and I say “IN” on this one, too.

  • Anonymous

For me, it’s her pants that hold up the look. She’s mixing androgyny and sheer clothes with a strange but somehow interesting jacket and then those pants………But you know it’s just like her to make us not scream WERQ. She wants mix in her own ingredient of strange and unexpected and sometimes that is not about looking “good”. ya know?

  • Anonymous

OUT. I’m missing our fabulous Swinton. Pull it together darling, we know you can do it. (again)

  • She skeers me

  • Bethany Fairbrother

Sorry but she is TIlda Swinton!  She cares not what you mere mortals think, she wears what she wants.  And like it or hate it, the Goddess does not care!  The mark of someone truly fashionable…who does not care what is fashionable..and wears what she wants.  Like it, great.  Don’t like it, great.

  • Anonymous

I have to concur with your assessment, TLo.  I’m not one who swoons over Tilda’s every appearance, so she has to put the work in for me to get excited.  And in the parlance of old English novels, Tilda is what was known as a “handsome” woman.  That is, she isn’t really pretty, at least in the conventional sense, but she has a commanding presence that is scintillating in its own right.  And a “handsome” woman needs to really bring it to keep that commanding presence working for her.

That coat is fantastic and the blouse would work fine if the bottom half of the outfit was bringing it as much as that coat is.  I’m afraid the pants and shoes keep this from being worthy of an androgynous and handsome woman.  OUT!

    • Anonymous

My dad used to call women handsome and he too meant that they were good looking in an interesting way.  I think it’s a compliment and use it myself but then I have to explain what I mean!
I’m distracted by how much all that black is draining her.  It is not her color.  A rich color under that jacket would have looked great and something other than those pants.

  • Eliza Lagerquist

I totally get what you are saying but I think she looks fantastic….especially with the slight sheer blouse…sigh

  • Sara__B

Yes, she’s in a bit of a Tilda-style rut lately, and no one, not even Tilda Swinton, should wear pegged, pleated trousers.  I love the coat, but not what she’s done with the sleeves. A very mild OUT, for being expected and getting dangerously close to boring.

  • Anonymous

Jesus, no. That coat is way too winter mother-of-the-bride. Pants are tragic. Blouse is cool, though.

  • Anonymous

I agree that the same coat over a minimalist gown with a more interesting shoe would have been better, but I still think she looks fantastic, not at all average, and totally IN.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Out.  The coat is great, but she needed to pair it with something more tailored underneath.

  • Pegged, pleated pants are a fashion disaster no matter who wears them. OUT.

  • Charles Purdy

It’s almost like “drab-kitsch” … is that a thing? I get what you’re saying, but I don’t think she looks so bad. I guess if I were in charge, I wouldn’t put her in so much black…. But I’m a fan, so I dig her in just about everything. She’s stunning. Way above average. IN.

  • Matthew Dinda

Um. It’s Tilda, and even if it’s not her regular stratosphere of fabulosity it’s still an enthusiastic IN!

  • Anonymous

how is it expected that Tilda shows up in a pantsuit with a see through top? IN and nevah out.

  • Anonymous

In. That jacket is fabulous and almost no one else could pull it off.

  • Out, it’s kinda boring.

  • Joyce VG

    I love it. IN.

  • Anonymous

    maybe she’s tired.
but i like the jacket a lot & it is one of the only cases of dropped waist i’ve ever liked at all.

  • It’s not that she looks bad, it’s just when you think of SWINTON you expect a certain baseline level of amaze which those slacks fail to achieve. I will say that I can’t see anyone else in that jacket.

Still I can’t quite bring myself to say Ouuuuuu……

  • IN. I love the jacket.

  • Anonymous

Its an IN. expected, but she looks really good.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think “not great” qualifies as an Out. She’s not great. She’s not out.

  • Out.  Tilda is far too fabulous to look like she borrowed her outfit from Phil “Duckie” Dale’s closet.

    • foodycat

Very nice Pretty in Pink reference. It would have been better with Duckie shoes, I think.

  • IN, what’s the matter with you two?

  • Agree… The jacket is kickass, but the rest of the look is “meh.”

  • Not her most interesting look, but still IN.

  • Toto Maya

hahaha WTF. That is the only reaction I can muster.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

  • Anonymous

I think she looks great.  Clothes always seem to  hang better on her than on anyone else.

  • Anonymous

I don’t love the crotch sash–in fact, I kind of hate it–but that jacket makes up for a lot of otherwise minor mistakes. IN, but just barely.

  • Anonymous

She can get away with wearing just about anything…. but this.   Too sloppy.

  • Anonymous

On anyone else, this would be an unmitigated disaster. On Swinton, it looks like an everyday kind of outfit. That has to count for something, so I guess a small in from me.

  • CQAussie

Sadly, I do agree with you that she looks average here with the pants like that.  So….it’s an OUT from me too.

  • Vic

I saw the Gotham red carpet runway on another site this morning and made a bet with myself: T&Lo will cover Tilda Swinton. Predictable and boring. Sorry, she lost me a long time ago.

  • Anonymous

LOVE IT, although it is a bit expected, IN!

  • Anonymous

  • LocMama

All I can see is sequined zoot suit and those pants make me sad.  OUT & that pains me.

  • She’s Tilda, thus she’s in. But favoritism aside, the coat is all kinds of rocking. IN IN IN

  • This is a great look, no matter if it is kind of boring comparatively. IN.

  • IN, because SWINTON.

She transcends our petty mortal classifications.

  • Anonymous

Ooh, never mind the clothes, I don’t like the hair color.  It needs to be less golden orange!  Still, she is Swinton, and there is no other.

  • Anonymous

I agree with everything you say, but I cannot give La Tilda an OUT. I simply cannot. So, in.

  • Innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn I think she looks so great

  • David Beauchamp

  • Anonymous

SWINTON is never out.  therefore she is IN

  • Now I am The Bee

TLo says: But when you pair them with a balloony pair of pants and simple black pumps, it just looks … average.

Amen.  I’ve seen that outfit many a time here in the Midwest.  Nothing special.  And–I get the whole “I don’t wear make-up” thing, but honey–please.  Just a teeny bit of powder on your forehead wouldn’t hurt ya…

  • Aly Light

  • Anonymous

    Nevertheless, an in.

  • I think she is one of a kind, and always looks like some sort of celestial being gracing us with its presence, but I personally always think she looks OUT. Her fashion is interesting to say the least, but not in a good way. And I don’t like how she colored her hair.

  • Anonymous

    Awesome 80’s rocker chic IN.

  • Out.

  • Anonymous

    in . . . but not IN!!!

  • It’s still way more interesting and head turning than what everyone else in Hollywood wears. IN. I refuse to vote Tilda out, ever.

  • La Roux in 30 years.

    A tentative IN.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  Wish she’d worn that rad jacket with something else.   P-to-the-5th indeed.

  • Anonymous

Meh. I give her an “in” because she’s Tilda, but I’m not digging those pants, and I actually totally agree with your argument.

  • Anonymous

Love the jacket, but those pants are weird looking–and not in a good way.  Badly cut.  She can do sooo much better–so, OUT.

  • I think she looks great. IN. You are setting the bar too high, or maybe she’s done it in the past.

  • Anonymous

In. This is definitely above average.

  • Anonymous

I have to agree, this is a yawner.  OUT.

  • Not perfect but definitely superior to her contemporaries, and her androgyny is wonderful. I’ll take her visual intelligence any day.

  • Boys this is SWINTON we are speaking of. she is always IN

  • Oh whatever, Swinton will always be IN.

  • Ok maybe she’s in a style rut, but I love everything about this look.

  • When I saw the thumbnail, I thought Tilda was Carson Kressley.  Uh oh.

  • Anonymous

In.  Nothing witty or erudite to add.

  • OUT 🙁
Tilda can do it much much better!

  • Anonymous

Out.  She is capable of so much more.

  • Tilda, it hurts, but I have to say OUT.  I agree with TLo, the jacket and blouse could have been paired so much better with something else on the bottom.

And she is so shiny and what is with the hair?  Weird shade, looks all dried out.  She can do better.

  • Anonymous

In – shes getting a bum wrap for not living up to her Swinton

  • Anonymous

IN, but falling short of SWINTON divine potential.

  • Anonymous

In. Not far in but in.

  • Anonymous

The jacket is really cool…the rest is average & acceptable.

  • Anonymous

I really wish people would stop with the clothes that dangle things between their legs.

  • Joy

Out, that crotch halfway to her knees can never be in.

  • Anonymous

In.   “Pegged, pleated pants” ARE a pernicious problem.  But not so much so that a skinny, lanky woman with Presence can’t pull them off with that AWESOME jacket & intriguing blouse combo.

    So, in, in and in.

But pants of that cut should be banned by law. Or dictatorial fiat. Or destroyed in a series of tragic warehouse fires. Or purloined from shops in the dead of night by ninja fashion police.  Who cares how?

  • Anonymous

IN.  Tilda rules, and I love that jacket!

  • Allison Woods

An ill David Bowie? Yes, perhaps. But it IS La Swinton. IN.

  • She looks like Jane Lynch’s albino sister in this getup. BACK TO GOWNS!

  • M M

Johnny Weir on crack. Nothing “average” about that.

  • Anonymous

    IN!  Love the jacket!

  • penn collins

Agreed, this rates a “meh” …. love the slit skirt idea….so many ways to make this (much) more interesting….

  • In, but only for her. No one else could pull this off….

  • Anonymous

I love the jacket and blouse, but the pants and shoes are amazingly seen-at-the-mall. Ackermann makes such unbelievably beautifully draped gowns and long skirts–they are perfect for Tilda, so I’m disappointed that she didn’t choose one of those.  And in the photos above, she looks a little like she might have just stepped off the plane and thrown on a few things out of her suitcase. OK, so it was an indie awards event and maybe a gown would have been too much. But those pants and shoes are too little.

My heart’s on my sleeve:  A teensy little in from me, but with expectations of better things ahead.   TLo are right.

  • Out – those pants are the Death Valley of Fabulosity.

  • This might be fabulous on other people but on Tilda it’s just ok.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

    OUT.  Those pants are irredeemable.

  • Anonymous

It’s not a rut! She is SWINTON.

  • Out. It’s dull.

  • Mary McClelland

In – just for that fantastic and beautiful coat. Although technically she’s an out for pair pairings and dare I say it uninspired dressing. Maybe she just needed a day off.

    • Judy_J

      Agreed.  That coat is gorgeous.

  • I’m kinda loving this look…  IN

  • Out. It’s boring and blah. If this were on ANYONE else would you even have to ask? Plus her face is hella shiny and that’s never a good look.

  • Anonymous

dramatic makeup and hair would have done it..

  • Anonymous

I am not a Tilda fan by any means, but I like this outfit.  I like the coat with the strong shoulders and the metallic plaid paired with the light and airy top.  And the pants are just fine.  So it’s an IN for me, which is surprising, because I honestly don’t get her and don’t get all the love you guys have for her.  Is it just because she’s weird?

  • Cathy S

I love the coat on her. But the rest is out. Come back to us Tilda!

  • Anonymous

There’s something very “Miami Vice” about the jacket that makes the whole thing look a bit literal for my liking. I hate to say it, because I do love me some Swinton, but OUT.

  • Look at her eyes in the last photo: she is plotting ways to take down bloggers who fail to recognize that the Swinton doles out the fashion fabulosity in the exact measurements that are good and required.  IN – and I wouldn’t turn my back to her any time soon, boys.

  • A. Wagner

Sometimes you just want to wear pants.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know. Tilda Swinton has found a designer she loves, and feels very comfortable wearing his clothes.  While this isn’t my favorite Tilda fashion moment, she still has something that many others walking the red carpet will never have. So, a qualified IN.

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind pants in principle, but THOSE pants are hangey and blah, and that tie thing that drapes down her middle makes it look as if the crotch is just north of her knees.  Makes her look short, and I know she’s probably 7 feet tall IRL.  OUT

  • Anonymous

What a disappointment.  I got nothing to add.  T & L, you nailed it, exactly.  Neither OUT nor IN, which for Tilda is an OUT.

  • Anonymous

IN This is Tilda Swinton bitches.  She can do no wrong.  Period.

  • Some of the waist / pant detailing is a little weird. But otherwise I find this a surprisingly wearable look from her. Thus an IN.

  • Anonymous

In the first pic she looks like Conan O’Brien. That’s not good.

  • Anonymous

IN.  She amazes me and I long for that jacket.

  • Anonymous

Great coat with Satan’s pants.  I can’t make up my mind.

  • Anonymous

Tilda is IN – that jacket is fantastic and I can forgive the pants since all else works in my opinion. Admittedly I am very forgiving of any slight missteps Ms. S makes since she has built up considerable good will in my book by being her fabulous self year after year.

  • Anonymous

Why does she have to look like an albino? Something wrong with a little mascara and a touch of lipstick?

Not sure if anyone saw “I Am Love” — but she looked amazing! She was dressed in Jil Sander throughout the film, had shoulder length hair and looked like an incredibly beautiful, stylish woman (with a hot much-younger Italian lover).

Not everyone must be forced into a narrow band of what society deems attractive, but IMHO her look is is aggressively unattractive, like she’s trying to rout out anything that might be considered conventionally beautiful.

  • Anonymous

    I love David Bowie.

  • Anonymous

It may be a little low key for SWINTON, but she still looks great. IN!

  • ace

wait, it’s expected if an androgynous woman wears pants, but not if a feminine woman wears a dress? i don’t get it. tilda, wear all the pants you want, honey. there’s nothing wrong with not looking feminine. in other words, IN.

  • Samantha Irene

Yeah – I agree. This would be fine for her for say – going to a movie, or the shops or a low key dinner – but at an awards show… Tilda, I just expect more. OUT
