In or Out: Jessica Alba in Carolina Herrera

Posted on November 22, 2011

We’ve been slinging some strongly stated opinions at you with the “In and Out” posts lately, so we thought we’d give someone else a chance to hold the spirit stick for a while and not impose ourselves on this one. We’re not feeling strongly about it one way or another.

Jessica Alba in Carolina HerreraJessica Alba hosts Swarovski Elements And Rodeo Drive Holiday Lighting Ceremony in Beverly Hills in a Carolina Herrera dress paired with a Swarovski Crystallized ‘Winter Garden’ necklace.

But before we turn the floor over to y’all…

The dress is pretty, if a little Betty Draper-ish. We’re not crazy about the wavy belt. We also don’t think that necklace goes with the dress at all. The shoes are plain, the clutch is okay, and her makeup is too heavy for such a cool, sweet look.

There. You guys fight it out.

Vote Now!
IN! Chic, understated holiday sparkle!
OUT! Boring, expected, and slightly mismatched!

In yesterday’s opinionating, Gwyneth’s salute to waves was deemed OUT, as was Blake’s salute to fringe.

      Cute.  Who’s she marrying?

    • Anonymous

I don’t care for the bodice on the top. It appears very dowdy and not flattering. It doesn’t flatter her chest at all and in fact it makes it look like she’s wearing a sports bra or something. She’s just one big bump.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’d add different shoes, but it’s an ‘in’ from me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

This is a total IN for me – love the dress – Everything seems right for the occasion and she looks really beautiful.

    • Anonymous

The shape of the skirt is all wrong. It looks slept in, which only adds to the Betty Draper-ness. Also, her hair is sad. Out.

      • Anonymous

I can’t believe they didn’t mention her hair! That’s all I can look at!

She just bores me. Which is sad, because she could really be something to look at.

    • Anonymous

It kind of looks like she’s going to homecoming. She would be super chic if she were a seventeen year old up for court, but I think it’s a little dull for the red carpet. OUT.

    • Anonymous

I actually really like the belt, but am ambivalent about the shoes. Nice dress, and I am okay with jewelry, even if it makes the whole look seem a little more mature looking. I am surprised there was no talk of her hair, because she was clearly trying for a polished, lacquered inspired look there and completely failed.

Most importantly, SHE IS FREAKING SMILING! Even if it looks a little forced here and there, when is the last time you saw only pictures of her smiling?!

IN. Not amazing, but definitely not an OUT.

    • http://deeplyproblematic.blogspot.com/ RMJ12345

Like the makeup and dress, hate the hair, accessories are boring. Pops of color would have compensated for the messy-looking hair or made it more fun or something. OUT.

    • Anonymous

The accessories are all wrong (or possibly just very boring).  The more I look at it, it seems like an OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kimberly-Burke/100002384493067 Kimberly Burke

Lose the necklace and completely change that hair, and I would consider this an “in”.  But as is, the necklace distracts from the dress completely and I want to brush her hair for about 6 hours.  That earns an OUT from me.

    • Anonymous

I really don’t like that dress. The fabric looks like a Project Runway challenge where they had to turn a pair of couches into a bridal gown. And the make-up is very strange and for some reason she looks like she’s wearing ugly color contacts. Love the shoes but they have nothing to do with the dress. OUT.

    • Anonymous

It’s just OK. Not bad. I can see why you couldn’t decide if this was an In or an Out. It really does fall into that flat middle place.

    • http://twitter.com/Usama_Hamayun Usama Hamayun

Disagree…its a cute look overall…shoes r ok, clutch contrasts the dress well but a different and simpler belt wud hv been better…still the look works…makeup is fine too!!

    • http://profiles.google.com/amanda.leigh.albert Amanda Albert

      twee.

    • Stephen Bornstein

Gentlemen…I can not believe that you did not think that the underskirt looks like a petticoat overhang mistake on Ms Alba. You were so right on with the other observations…Your IN/She’s OUT.

    • Anonymous

I think it has potential, but I don’t think it’s for her – the styling alone should indicate that, as TLo points out with the wavy belt, the WTF necklace, and… whatever it is that she’s wearing on her feet, there.

So I guess that’s an OUT, but I’d really like to see someone better suited wear this dress. Carey Mulligan, perhaps?

    • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

      IN, love it all

    • Anonymous

The necklace is the worst thing on here.  It doesn’t match and the bodice is busy and doesn’t need any competing jewelry.  The belt could be better, as could the shoes, but they are inoffensive.  I don’t hate the hair or makeup.  I do really like the dress.

I guess In.  But Jessica?  You are boring me.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

OUT – because of that awful necklace and she should have taken it up a few inches. It’s making her look stumpy. Other than that, it’s a beautiful dress.

    • Anonymous

      IN

Her hair, belt and clutch are fine with me…she looks pretty.  I do agree that her makeup is a bit too heavy, especially blush and under eye shadow.  I think she was going for a soft and subdued look, which would have been perfect for the outfit if she toned it down.  I mostly take issue with the length and fullness of the skirt (too long too full) and I think the shoes are wrong.  The minuses are not enough to warrant an out though because they’re all just a bit off.

    • Anonymous

It’s boring, especially in light of Blake and Gwennie’s efforts at…something…so I guess…IN?

    • Anonymous

Cute dress.  Too bad everything else is just a bit overworked.  OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The belt and waist together is making her body look awfully funny.  I do actually love the wavy belt, just something new.  But the waist is just too long for her body.  She should have had no necklace and dangle earrings.  I give her an begrudging IN.  Only because this is far better than the last time we judged her.

    • http://twitter.com/angelich Heather

She looks super cute. I like the whole look, only iffy on the belt.

    • Sobaika Mirza

OUT – her foundation looks like pancake batter.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B2UJP2N3XZ5YMF5NUIAM3YYATA Dave

It’s the opposite of a “Monet” – Up close it’s OK, but from far away, it’s a big ol’ mess.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

      Out.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

not exciting, but lady like and pretty.  I’ll take this over the half nakid fashion victims any day.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kelsey-Albrecht/100001647200441 Kelsey Albrecht

She’s too short for this dress.. out.

    • Anonymous

If you know you have to wear a big crystal necklace, can’t you build a look around that.  Maybe a simple, flattering silhouette, no distracting print, nix the weird wavy belt… I have necklace dresses–simple dresses I wear statement jewelry with.  Granting I am not “lighting”Rodeo Drive so she shouldn’t shop where I would, but the principle is the same.  I am sure Carolina Herrera has some fabulous ad expensive simple dress shoe could wear.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ellenbehm Ellen Behm

I like the belt, but the black looks a little harsh. The necklace doesn’t seem right with the dress, though I guess it’s the point of the event. I like the clutch and the shoes. It still isn’t all right, but it leans more that way than not so I’m giving it an IN.

    • Cathy S

I like all of it, including the wavy belt. I give it an in.

    • CQAussie

The make-up is off, too heavy as you’ve said.  The shoes are also off.  But I like the dress and the clutch, the necklace and belt.  IN!

    • Sara__B

She’s too short through the torso for this dress, and I agree with all your criticisms. Somehow, pretty as she is, she’s looking a little frumpy (maybe because the dress is designed to look as if her slip is showing?). OUT, but not awful.

    • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah Veenstra

once you see the designer’s shot on the model as intended, it’s evidently clear that this is Not. Her. Dress.

    • Anonymous

That bodice material could look really sharp with a contrasting black or dark gray, but I don’t like it at all with all that white.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6416893 Jenna Kuhmann

The makeup is a bit heavy, but I think she looks cute, despite the wavy belt.  IN.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

OUT. Though I can’t articulate why. Just don’t like it. The hair certainly does not help the look.

    • Anonymous

Eh. I’m giving it an OUT because none of it comes together. The dress isn’t bad, except I hate that under skirt thingy peeking out. Her hair is awful. Necklace is pretty, but as Uncle T and Lo point out, doesn’t go with the dress. I like her shoe choice over the model choice. Mostly, I’m suffering under heavy ennui.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

      OUT.

    • Anonymous

      Hate the rick-rack belt.

    • Anonymous

Meh. It’s ok. I’m giving it an IN because I’m not sure if I have my raging bias against white dresses under control yet.

    • MilaXX

IN.  The necklace feels shoe horned in and the bush is a little too heavy, but otherwise I think she looks pretty good here.

      • Anonymous

I don’t think we can see her bush…

        • MilaXX

          Oh my, lemme go edit

    • Anonymous

I wish celebrity stylists would look more at how the designers style their dresses, and not copy what they’ve done EXACTLY but work with what made the look work in the first place. The Carolina Herrera stylist stopped the dress from looking too sweetly pretty by keeping the hair and lip sleek, fierce and contemporary and nixing all accessories except for an interesting shoe in a contrasting colour to draw the eye downwards past the unusual hemline. Instead Jessica Alba has soft, pretty hair and makeup, which just makes everything too sickly sweet; overloaded the dress with statement necklace, contrasting clutch and belt and added a neutral shoe that just makes you glance at the hemline out of the corner of your eye, so it just looks like the overskirt is too short.
Fiercer more tightly pulled back hair, a stronger lip, a very neutral clutch, no necklace and a fiercer, darker shoe to draw the eye down properly would have made this an IN.

    • Anonymous

OUT. It looks like an ice-dancing, prom princess met a rash of off-hue and oddly textured winter accessories. Looking at something and saying, ‘Gosh this reminds me of snowflakes /too/’ does not an outfit make.

    • Anonymous

I think it’s very sweet and cute, I give it an IN

    • Anonymous

Do you two have something against the “Betty Draper style”? I can never tell if your saying it’s not good or what, and it drives me a little crazy because I love these kinds of dresses and can’t see why anyone would have a problem with them.

IN, but I hate crimped hair. That is crimped hair, right?

      • http://jessieliz.wordpress.com/ Super Red

me too!! If I could afford the beautiful dresses, I’d be Betty Draper everyday.

    • Anonymous

OUT. However, that is a great clutch and I do like the bodice of the dress (specifically that neckline) and the makeup. That hair is insane and the belt/waistline/skirt are crazy and don’t go together at all. I am alright with but not sure about shoes and necklace.

    • Anonymous

I just don’t think this feels like her style. This would be fabulous on, say, Eva Mendes or Fanning The Elder (or Emma Roberts?), but I don’t think of Jessica Alba as being this retro-girly. The top half I like; the rest is no good for her.

      OUT.

    • Anonymous

She looks cross-eyed.  The wavy belt reminds me of a 13-year-old trying to be cool.

      In I think.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I love the necklace and think it looks fine with the dress.  I don’t like the belt, can’t tell much about the clutch.  The dress is quite beautiful on the model, a little less impressive on Jessica for some reason.  In.

    • Anonymous

      IN – she looks beautiful.

    • Anonymous

      Underwhelmed. OUT.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

I think I will vote IN below the neck, OUT above. The makeup, hair, and expression are just not good, but the textures in the dress look interesting, and I will buy the wavy belt as something that makes it different.

Out – too twee and her blush/lip colors are just not right.

    • Anonymous

My first thought on seeing that dress was: “ooh! Betty Draper!” so that’s where I’m coming from. Even with that in mind, I think it’s quite pretty, although she’s doing her best to wreck it with the makeup.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Not stunning, but not horrible. She’s hosting a party for Swarovski wearing them on her dress and necklace. So, yes, slightly mismatched but it makes sense for the venue. IN

I like it a lot… she looks relaxed and adorable, but it’s not too twee. IN for me. :)

She looks pretty and a bit boring (channeling Taylor Swift?), but that is Jessica Alba’s default styling mode.  She could look fierce though, back in her “Dark Angel” days.

    • Grace Ritt

I think this is great! I love the wavy belt, great styling. IN.

    • Anonymous

In.  That has to be the perfect holiday dress.  The only thing I would have changed is the necklace, but I understand why she is wearing it, and it does look good.

    • Anonymous

I like it.  I think it is cool and elegant and festive looking.  I do think the necklace is a little heavy for this dress though.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I’d say IN. I like the dress and the belt. I don’t mind the shoes or other accessories at all. I do think the blush is quite heavy but otherwise, I think she looks great.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Pretty dress. Not the most exciting, maybe a little ‘ladies that lunch’ not sure what her bent is. She doesn’t think if she dresses like this that people will think of her as a serious actress does she? IN

The waist of the dress looks weird with a belt. The point of a belt on a dress is to create the illusion of a waist or something like it, right? why add a belt to a dress that already looks different in the waist?

    • Anonymous

I’m staying neutral on this one.  I really kind of like the dress–I’d rather it didn’t have the “my slip is showing” bit, but I like the quilted-ish bottom.  I can’t make up my mind about the top.

But I’m really against her styling here.  I kind of like the shoes, but the rest doesn’t go with this look. Especially the makeup.

      Bedcover.
The belt is the only thing I like.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

I actually think the necklace was an inspired choice with the top of that dress. Especially since so many Hollywood women don’t wear any neck jewelry at all and most need it. I think her makeup is fine, but paired with the hair so tightly pulled back is what make her face look a little on the harsh side. But she’s lovely even still.

The bulk of the problems with this outfit are from the waist down. That skinny, wavy belt with the massive width of the waistband on that dress is just awful. The skirt itself is way, way too heavy and bulky and makes her look enormously bottom-heavy. The shoes are hideous and the clutch is meh.

Taking the look as a whole, the good top doesn’t outweigh the bad bottom: OUT!

The other evening I clicked on the TV and watched the last half of the Fashion Police. (Kind of a stupid show, but it was good folding-laundry fodder.) Anyway, Joan Rivers did this bit in which whenever anyone said “Jessica Alba” she fell into a deep, hypnotic sleep. It was hysterical. This outfit kind of induces that response in me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/libby.myers.44 Libby Myers

Out. She looks oddly messy. I realize it’s the dress that has that ..whatever…double hem line.  But she isn’t wearing it well and it just looks like her slip is really hanging out like an old washer woman

    • Mariah J

      Adorable! IN

    • Anonymous

The dress is kind of meh to me. Skirt fabric’s a little too trapunto-bedspready to hang well, and the top half doesn’t quite go with the bottom part, and dropped waists are few women’s friend. But. It’s Jessica Alba, and she manages to pull off stuff like this. I like her makeup a lot, though. I think it keeps the entire ensemble from being too twee. So, a lukewarm IN.

The dress looks better on the model but the model’s shoes are more window-shopping-in-NYC and I hate them.  Jessica has bad posture in a couple of the photos.  Don’t go all Maggie-Gylenhaal-Osteoporosis on us!  I don’t mind the necklace but it looks like one of those charm necklaces that were all the rage in 1983 and it’s distracting.  The belt looks like a poisonous black snake.  Maybe Jessica is a super hero and that’s her super power.  Besides all the bitching, it is boring but acceptable.  IN

Love the dress, love the necklace, love the shoes, the bag, the belt, and the hair, and love it all together. Makeup is a tad too heavy, but that is a minor quibble. BIG IN.

Ehhh.  I barely like the skirt on the model, and she doesn’t really make it look any better.  OUT.

In. I love the shape and the bodice. The necklace doesn’t go, but it’s not enough for me to give it an out.

I actually like it all, except the shoes. IN

    • BuffaloBarbara

I like this look, it’s cute.  I’ll go with In.  I like the necklace, too, and don’t think they go badly together, but it’s also not shown off to its greatest potential on the light surface.

I like in, just not sure I like it on her.  The styling is making me think twice.
Still, it’s inoffensive and sweet, so an IN, but barely.

It’s not bad enough to be an out.  There are some quibbles, as you point out, but it’s still a decent look.  Good enough to be a in.

In, just barely. Good dress, really cute skirt/hem. She’s dragging it down with the accessories, but it squeaks by.

I think it’s kinda cute.  On the model, the hem is ok.  On Jessica, it looks like her slip is showing.  Wrong necklace, boring shoes.  More of an “eh” than an IN.  But, not out.

    • Anonymous

Given the event (which is sort of sparkly and winter wonderland-ish), this seems like the right outfit.  Cute dress, and a good festive winter white dress for a warm weather climate.  Not loving the belt and wish there was a little color (maybe some Santa Claus red or fir tree green).  Not feeling the makeup either.

In. I actually think the wavy belt is fantastic, and I love the Betty Draper quality to it. The hair, necklace, and purse are great, and the shoes are ok. The dress itself is adorable.

That wavy belt, especially combined with the necklace thing, is making my eyes twitch.  Cute dress though….

    • Anonymous

Out, it gives her uni-boob — she’s a nursing mom, this is the wrong bodice for her at the moment …  And the hair is … not good.

    • Anonymous

Meh.  If it was about promoting the Swarovski necklace there should have been a different apparel choice.  The necklace is lost.  Ineffective dressing gets an “Out” from me.

    • Anonymous

Out…because the necklace doesn’t go with the dress, and the shoes are boring.

Dress is great, styling is crap.  Very weak IN.

    • bailey debruynkops

the belt is too random, the dropwaist is blatantly unflattering, boring necklace and shoes; yet the entirety is very try-hard. out.

    • Anonymous

It’s over-accessorized, and she’s doing a weird pose that makes her shoulders look as if they’ve turned around backwards. Also, her hair is awful. That’s what mine looks like in the morning after I’ve gone to bed with it wet and I don’t want to take the time to fight a brush through it.

I have to give it a lukewarm OUT. I don’t hate it. But she looks like she just threw on the dress, picked a random selection of accessories that wouldn’t clash, whipped her hair off her face, and slathered on makeup in dim light.

    • Anonymous

In.  I love the dress and clutch.  The shoes are ok.  I’d do a wider, non wavy belt and lose the necklace.  But overall, she looks great.

      In. She looks Portman-esque here.

    • Anonymous

Out. She’s too short for that dress, or the dress is too long. And not just the hem – the bodice is too long, too. It makes her look like she’s wearing her mother’s dress. Why do so many celebrities insist on wearing clothes that are too long? Do they get them loaned to them straight of the model’s back, and are told they’re not allowed to alter them?

    • http://twitter.com/Unclassical Alexandria N

IN! dress is super pretty and she looks fabulous. yes, necklace is weird with that and just ugly anyway, and a colored shoe would have been nice. I like the wavy belt.

    • Anonymous

The dress is fine. The styling does need a little more youth though. The thing that bothers me the most is the length of the dress. I know mid-length dresses were popular in the 50s and such, but that length makes you look shorter. The dress cuts her of mid calf and is not flattering. It should have been tailored a little shorter for her.
