In or Out: Florence Welch in Alexander McQueen

Posted on November 09, 2011

Oh, Flo. No.

Florence Welch in Alexander McQueenFlorence Welch attends the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards 2011 in London in an Alexander McQueen gown. Clutch by Alexander McQueen.

We think you may just have found the dress that’s too much dress for you, girl.

More so on Flo than on the model, there’s an unfortunate “tiered boob” effect going on here that overwhelms everything else. The dress is stunning, but it’s doing odd things to her torso. In addition, for whatever reason (possibly thinking she had to go extreme to wear this dress), she’s sporting the least flattering hair style we’ve ever seen on her. That’s prairie schoolmarm territory. And the uncharacteristically harsh makeup isn’t helping. This is just a big style misstep, top to bottom.

Vote Now!
IN! Golden princess!

OUT! Saloon girl with a bad attitude!

The Minion Opinion yesterday shook out as an IN for Michelle Williams’ perfect holiday party dress and another IN for Freida Pinto’s science fiction gown, which means you all currently love Lorenzo more than Tom. Fine. Whatever.

At first glance, I read “tiered boob” as “tired boob.”

      Same thing, in this case.

Out.  This is NOT her dress. It may not be anybody’s dress, but it is certainly not hers.

As usual, Disqus is not letting me post on my own, so I’m taggin onto EveEve – thank you EveEve!

Anyhoo, in theory I love this dress.  The color is beautiful and from the boobs up, including the arms, I love it.  But the second set of boobs, as well as the hair and makeup, make this an unfortunate OUT for me.

      • Anonymous

        Me too too!

Not loving the make-up or hair at all, but I actually really dig that dress on her.

OUT. Her face looks about 15 years older and her boobs look sad. :/

    • CQAussie

Sorry but any dress that makes you look like you have Quattro Boobs is an OUT.

        Quattro Boobs…snort

      • Anonymous

Does that mean they’re all-boob drive?

and saggy quattro boobs at that……..on the model as well…..not a good idea

    • Anonymous

I was ready to vote In until I saw the close up with the second set of boobs. Unfortunate. On the model, it looks much more like a flouncey lace ruffle than, well, a second set of breasts.

Out, but barely. I like the idea of the dress and the color on her, but the execution isn’t there.

    • Sobaika Mirza

IN. Sorry, she’s the only mortal close enough to pulling this off, even though it’s not necessarily the right shape for her.

      I APPLAUD YOU, FLO.

      • Anonymous

Agreed.  And somehow the severe hair and makeup works for me.  I say IN.

      • Anonymous

I say IN too. She’s almost making it look great. Not perfect, but not out.

    • Elizabeth Winer

In.  It’d be perfect if she got rid of the first under-boob flounce.

Out. Particularly for the Power Girl-esque boob window. Sad misstep from McQueen.

      • BerlinerNYC

Cheers for the Power Girl boob window reference!! Works a lot better in comics than in real life.

That randomly reminds me of an outfit I saw like 20 years ago on a contestant on American Gladiator, which entirely exposed the woman’s washboard abs. A friend commented that any normal person trying on that outfit would be like, “Is this hole for my stomach to go through?”

    • Anonymous

The new album is so good that I forgive.  I forgive!

OUT.  She looks like she’s got belly flab, and the hair and makeup are ALL WRONG.  OUT OUT OUT.

      • Anonymous

See now , if only that would come into style I would be set. Prairie hair, belly flab, scowl, check -check-check! Love her.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Oh too bad. That tiered boob thing ruins a super cool dress that probably would have worked for me even with that hair… OUT.

    • Anonymous

OUT, I mean it really does make her tits look very sad and makes her look like she has the rack of an 80 year old woman whose had 10 kids.  The hair is just a travesty.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Out. It gives her a very weird shape, does not do attractive things to her bust, and what is up with that hair? Totally out.

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

I think she’s been hanging out too much with Blake Lively. That third pic shows the open-mouth, over-the-shoulder thing I’ve seen Blake do time and time again.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Wow, that dress is stunning on the model.  Flo’s hair almost looks like a wig, though, and it looks like her boobies need a little lift in this dress. Awww, out.

I love Flo, but I don’t know if I like her two new breasts.

Florence! Why do you look like Chloe Sevigny? Remove that scowl at once! It’s making your boobs try to escape out the bottom of your dress!

    • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

I happen to think this dress is a hot mess, so I don’t really care who it’s on it’s OUT.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

OMG NO!!!!!  Florence, dear,….. Stand up straight and you’ll correct a lot of problems.  But that is WAY too much look for you.  And your stylist should be shot on sight for sending you out with stick straight flat hair in that look.

For some reason this reminds me of a look Chloë Sevigny might sport. Must be the prairie comment.

I lLOVE this dress on her. I see the boob ruffle . But it doesn’t matter. I also love the prairie schoolmarm hair. I really hope that everyone one will be sporting prairie schoolmarm hair next season. And I feel personally insulted that you two don’t like it. And I mean it.

Just kidding. But I really do have schoolmarm hair. Andit’scoollookingtoo.

Out – the poor boobs need more support and the whole look is sad.

    • Anonymous

Even without the alien quatroboob effect, this would have been an out. It’s excessively fussy without any wow factor at all. I love the bangle on her right hand, but pretty much hate the rest of it. The ruffling looks tired and makes her waist look thick and her ass look huge (in addition to making her bosom look droopy). On the model it almost looks like an exotic sea creature, but it still fails as a gown.

    • Anonymous

First thought: why would you want to wear a dress that makes you look like you have four boobs and are maybe an alien?  Out.  Sorry honey.

I only slightly agree on the hair and makeup. I’d prefer them differently, but I think it’s still very Florence. And the gown is fantastic on her. I think it’s all incredible. IN.

    • Patty Wetli

I like the original better without the sleeves. I was astounded to see a profile of Flo on CBS’ “Sunday Morning.” She came across as so much younger than in photos and is positively adorable when she smiles. And her voice–my god can she belt out a tune. As amazing as she looks on the red carpet, she has the actual talent to back up the attention.

    • Anonymous

I like it on the model with the short sleeve. It’s just not working on Flo.

The design looks better with the little cap sleeves.  Sleeves or no sleeves, this is not the dress for her.

    • http://twitter.com/jennathejenna jenna yarema

here’s an example of flo’s conservative-turned-edgy, high-neckline-and-covered-arms shtick working against her – the full sleeves are simply not as pretty as the runway’s cap sleeve. i understand why the dress was altered to fit her style, put yeah, it’s a miss. and the middle part undo is the worst.

    • bookish

Oh that is doing such sad things to her boobs. OUT

    • Anonymous

This is a dress that needs a girl that has a larger store bought rack.  Not Kim Kardashian large but larger because this dress is dsign to show off what you have not what you do not have.  Also, I do not like the dress on the model either.

    • Anonymous

Oyy, this must be KILLING Lorenzo! Flo is adorable and I love the runway version of the dress, but it just looks oh-so-wrong on Flo. OUT.

Adding those sleeves seemed to up the prairie schoolmarm factor and dial down the awesome of the original runway version by 10 fold.  Then again, I’m not a sheer sleeve fan in general.  OUT.

    • vmcdanie

Out. That dress only barely skates by on the model. Her boobs look cray cray (they also look like they are meeting her navel in the middle.) Hair would maybe work with another outfit but it’s terrible here.

    • Delaney Davis

I like it, actually. I’m a fan of boobs not having to be lifted just so to be pretty.

    • Judy_J

Oh, my.  It’s bad on so many levels.  And the hair/makeup ages her way beyond her years.  Take advantage of your youth, Flo!  Don’t throw away your young years looking 30 years older than your actual age!

    • Joyce VG

I love the dress but the styling is off.  IN because the dress is stunning.

    • Anonymous

      Out.  Totally unflattering.

    • Anonymous

OUT.   I’m sure this dress was mighty tempting. If it were not for that under-boob ruffle, zero support lace bodice and the added long sleeves this might have worked.  The model doesn’t appear to have the sleeves and the dress looks better for it.  The sleeves and the ribbon ring are a golden lacy step too far. The decollete is not even flattering on the model though. The bodice of this thing is not a girl’s friend.

I love the skirt, very pretty on her.  She and I have similar coloring, and gold is a color we can wear that hasn’t been embraced lately. So I get her there and I love and thank her for trying to make this happen. That hairstyle though, we shan’t speak of it again.

    • Anonymous

Am I the only one here old enough to remember the term “midriff bulge”? Because that’s what this dress is giving her.

    • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

Hair and makeup isn’t great, but I love that dress on her.. IN.

    • Anonymous

Plus, that’s really not her color.

    • Anonymous

OUT. That underboob flounce takes it to ugly territory on both the model and Florence. I don’t mind the sleeves, but in the thumbnail on FB I was excited to think that she had gotten past her long sleeve needs. Oh, well. (Does she have scars she wants to cover up?)

    • Anonymous

I don’t mind the hair in the context of the high neck. In that picture where she’s looking over her shoulder, I think her face looks stunning. But the whole torso is just terrible. How on earth did she decide to go out in this?

    • Anonymous

I am currently looking at the second, lower boob tier. Notice how perky it is on the model, but how droopy it is on Flo. I think the dress would be VERY hard for anyone to pull off, but the droopy fabric on Flo’s dress isn’t helping, either.

OUT. I *want* this to be beautiful, but it just isn’t.

      Florence needs a new stylist.

    • Anonymous

Wait, did she BELT it? Is that why there’s a gap in the ruffles that isn’t there in the model’s version?

    • MilaXX

OUT. The extra ruffle or bubble at the waist isn’t flattering and the hair is a no. If it hand been pulled back instead of having that center part she may have been able to pull it off, but center part = school marm. I don’t mind the makeup too much, but with the hair it doesn’t work.

Yeah, Flo needs to get those tired boobs in a nice hammock and by that I mean bra.

    • Sarah Lynnae

The dress could really be lovely, but this is an OUT for her. The hair, makeup, and clutch are much too casual, and there’s something off about the breasts… Hm. I think they’re lying just a smidge too much to the side. If she’d brought them in somehow (tape maybe?), she’d be a lot closer to an IN for me.

    • Anonymous

On the model it reads like more of a ruffle but in real life (maybe 10 minutes after it has been steamed and pressed) it seems like a second set of boobs.  The dreaded quad boob.  It’s an out.

Yep it’s the hair and the top of the dress that’s ruining it. Not even so much the hair. If that tier on the dress had disappeared it would have improved the whole thing overall. • http://www.hilonwheels.blogspot.com hilonwheels

I love the dramatic look, however I don’t get stylists’ obsession with beige. It’s so drab looking 99.9% of the time. Of course this is coming from a girl whose wardrobe color palette is that of crayola crayon box. ;D

Oof. I read ‘tiered boob’ as ‘tired boob’ and I’m sticking with that. OUT.

I think she’s pulling it off pretty well. Yeah. This is looking fine to me. Interesting, iconoclastic, cool.

I’m going IN. Crazy maybe but I love it. Not sure how that qualifies as harsh make-up…

Flo’s boobs look trapped…and then there’s that odd, awkward business below the boobs.  It’s just not working.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Her tits look like they’re being mammogrammed by lace. No bueno.

    • Haley Buchanan

Out.  I think I would’ve liked it on her if the torso was tailored a little differently.  And I would’ve liked to have seen whatever it is that the model has on her head.

Out. In the small pic, I thought she looked pregnant. Something about the size of her chest width in that dress.

IN even though I don’t like the hair or purse. It is nice to see a celebrity with real breasts instead of beach balls or helium balloons for breasts. Real women have curves and real boobs sag. Sag does not mean sad

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

It’s not her boobs that are sad.  What’s sad is that there isn’t some sort of structure to support them.  That’s why foundation garments were invented.

Lumpenproletariat; i.e.; she looks lumpy. Out.

Oh dear. Serious garment-inflicted boob droop. OUT.

Oh Lord – OUT – that mid section boob float thingy is horrific. And it looks like her head is floating. Bummer, cuz I love HUH.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

I actually think Flo is wearing the dress just as the model is, and it’s just a hideous, unflattering dress with no frontal support.  Only someone with extremely perky and front-facing boobs could possibly look good in this dress, and neither woman wearing it on this page is.  That’s not a fault of the women’s.  It’s the dress.  OUT.

    • http://profiles.google.com/grubhooligan J. Owen Dickson

Those are the saddest tits I’ve ever seen in my life.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

I see I am in the minority. I really like this dress– on her particularly. It’s a bit of a risk-take, but still I think it’s very suited for her. I agree though, her hair and make-up could’ve used a little more va-va-voom.

      NOPE

    • Ebony Dawkins

Oh…oh my  Her face is a little harsh in these pictures, so I think that definitely colors the presentation of the dress here.  The dress is beautiful, but not here – maybe it’s ill-fitted in the boobs (maybe?). And, the hair is not helping the situation any at all.  IDK how toe begin to fix this without just starting over from scratch.  I love Florence, but this is out.

      Oh, the awfulness of it……..OUT.

Out. So out. She looks haggard and older than she really is.

True story, I’ve seen dried baby puke/spittle exactly like this.

It wasn’t cute on the baby then, it’s not cute on Ms. Welch now. OUT.

      nah

She has four boobs, and all of them look droopy.  The whole dress looks like it’s shedding into pieces before our very eyes.  It would make an excellent Miss Havisham dress.  OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/RzYoung RzYoung

Oh dear, but did you see her on Later With Jools Holland?! You must look it up on You Tube or bbc iplayer, it was incredible. I think she’s wearing one of those Gucci graphic dresses and her hair’s in the centre parting but it looks good – she looks like a Pre-Raphaelite painting!

If the midsection of that dress would have looked like it does on the model, I would have said in. But it doesn’t so it’s an OUT!

    • Anonymous

Oh dear, that is some seriously sad side-boob. OUT!

    • Anonymous

Oh Lord, she looks like me when I get into a pair of tight waisted pants and a tightish pull over–roll on Mississippi.

    • Tim Wong

IN… at least she is trying to do something different…the hair… not perfect….but doesnt brother me and this is out of her comfort zone- its not the flowy vintagy night gowns she usually wears with dirty hair…. not perfect.. but she needs encouragement for trying to do something different…

Out. I got kind of scared/sad looking at this.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

What a tragedy!  I think with wildly flowy Flo-hair and some exaggeration of that sub-boob tier this could have been phenomenal.  As it is, it is tragic!  Out!

      Out.
Pancake boob effect topping cartoonish torso roll effect.

But it could have been fabulous if the optical illusions had been replaced by sleekness. That fabric is stunning.

    • Alloy Jane

In good news, she’s a lovely redhead with killer pipes.  In bad news, that dress looks awful on her.  She should have kept the hood thing and lost the sleeves.  Out.

The pancakes I made this morning looked better than your boobs do in that dress Florence.  OUT

ew. OUT! she looks like a solid gold poop

I think it looks odd on her b/c she has a waist and hips, unlike the model.  Still she looks like a fancier version of Laura Ingalls-OUT

That cut out looks like a skin-TV. Out.

    • http://twitter.com/SongOSongs Mary Gootee Schafers

I love Flo’s style but I agree this whole look is off. While Flo does have some curves but she sometimes wears stuff that make her look a lot smaller chested than she really is. It fine to have a delicate bust but Flo looks best with the boobs she has and making them look smaller just makes her look odd. The lip stick is too pink for her complexion and the dark hair makes her look washed out. Red looks so much better on Flo.
