In or Out: Charlize Theron in Gucci

Posted on November 29, 2011

We may have to revise our term for gorgeous people who get free clothes and styling who nonetheless look like they put no effort in. We’ve dubbed such actions “Pulling a Jolie,” but there’s an argument to be made that we should consider calling it “Pulling a Theron.”

Charlize Theron in GucciCharlize Theron attends IFP’s 21st annual Gotham Independent Film awards in New York City in Gucci.

Charlize Theron in Gucci

Aw, that’s not really fair. See that? We managed to change our minds in the time it took you to scroll down. We don’t particularly like this look, but we can’t, in all honesty, say it looks like she didn’t try. Let’s break this down. It’s really quite simple. We:

Like the top,

Hate the skirt,

Like her makeup,

Hate the hair.

So you see, it’s a bit of a 50/50 thing. As we said, the top is fine, but the shape of that skirt is awful and we hate the way the waistband “lifts” at certain points. And sweetie, your makeup is fully applied. You can take the headband out now and start doing something with your hair.

Vote Now!

IN! She looks cool, chic, and glittery!

OUT! She looks like she stumbled onto the red carpet halfway through her makeup routine, with her dress half done up.

Sienna Miller played the part of a pinata yesterday and you all took some good, hearty whacks at her, collectively voting her unfortunate schmatta OUT.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Zero effort or not she’s still rocking the frock better than the model.  IN!

    •ês-Martins/100000345906318 Inês Martins

      Totally agree! IN!

    • Don Edwards

I also agree with this comment. IN!

    • Taija HU!

Couldn’t have said it better. Definite IN for me.

    • Anplica Fiore

My first thought as well!!  In…and I actually kind of like her hair here!

    • Anonymous

In!  Love the whole look.  It highlights her toned arms and shoulders, great legs, jawline…everything. (And lo! – no implant-swollen boobs falling out of the décolleté!)  The seeming effortlessness of the look belies how difficult it really is to pull it off.

    • Anonymous

I have to agree. (I actually like the hair)

      • Anonymous

I don’t love the hair, but I actually like the skirt, so hey, same diff. IN.

    • Amanda

      I agree. IN!

    • Rand Ortega

      Hit the proverbial nail, Eclectic!

    • Anonymous

The model scares me. She looks like she wants to kill me.

  • Anonymous

I actually give her a IN – I think the hair and make up are gorgeous, and I love the whole dress. I think it looks a million times better on her than it does on the model!

  • Claudia Gilbert

I think her hair looks very sweet.  But I agree about the skirt.  She still looks better than me on my best damn day, though!

  • Noelle Haland

I LOVE the hair (and makeup) and the dress (and necklace) actually really work for me. Well, not “for me” as I could never pull this off 😉 but you know what I mean. This is a very easy IN from me.

I wish I could see the back!

  • Anonymous

I’ll give her an IN, because she looks better than the model, but it’s really more of a MEH.  I miss old Charlize who wore that gorgeous tangerine dress to the Oscars!  Bring her back.

    • Anonymous

That was a hall of famer! We called it the “this-butt-is-ripe-for-the-pickin’ dress! Gorgeous color!

  • Anonymous

Charlize is one of those women who can almost do no wrong in my eyes.  She is beautiful.  I wish I had shoulders like hers.

  • Sara Munoz

Agree 100%. Which for me, means OUT.

I do like the shoes though. The necklace I like with the top, but not the skirt.

  • Anonymous

In!  I’m not sure about the hair and the lipstick, but she does, in fact, look cool, chic and glittery.

  • Anonymous

OUT because I think that’s a really ugly and unflattering dress, even on someone as genetically blessed as Charlize. Her face is lovely, though. The hair looks like she stuck her finger in an electric socket.

  • Sara Leigh Merrey

I blame Gucci. They put the top and bottom together as a dress, apparently. I don’t like either half. Charlize looks gorgeous no matter what she’s wearing, as long as she isn’t wearing ugly teeth for some part in a movie.

  • Liana Brooks

I don’t love the dress, but she’s making it work. The style seems to suit her even if the design elements are off. Even the hair kind of works, it shouldn’t but it does. IN

  • Anonymous

It’s got to be hanging that way because it’s a DRESS, not separates. I like everything but the hair (the pouf is too silly).

  • marlie

IN! I kind of hate the color of the lipstick, but I love the rest of the look!

  • Anonymous

given that the makeup on the model makes her look like a “walker”, Charlize gets an IN based on how pretty hers is, the dress is all kinds of awkward but she is still making it work…..

  • Lauren St Martin

In! Girl is rocking the Christmas glam look. I love it.

  • Anonymous

I love the top part of the dress but want to reach into my computer screen and fix her waistband. Sometimes I feel like designers are trying so hard to find the next cool thing that they miss the point–to make the pretty people look pretty. (Hear that, Stella McCartney?) A reluctant IN, nevertheless, because Charlize is so gorgeous and manages to pull it off, but it would be an out for almost anyone else wearing the same get-up.

  • Pumps and Gloss

  • Anonymous

    IN. I absolutely love it.

  • Anonymous

After too many photos of too many celebs sporting JBF or JROOB (“just rolled out of bed”) hairdos, I have to say I find this one refreshing.  I think she looks great and rocks the dress even if it does have some design flaws.  IN.

  • Aaminah Khan

I actually like the hair. But the bottom half of that dress just makes me want to cry, so OUT.

    • Anonymous

I like her hair too, but the bottom half of the dress makes this an OUT, so it doesn’t’ really matter what else is going on.

  • Anonymous

In…. I actually love this, especially her lipstick color and that gold trim.

  • Anonymous

Actually, I think she looks pretty fine, and finely pretty. IN!

  • Anonymous

She just looks stunning. It’s not my favorite look of hers, but I have to give her an In because the girl can work an outfit.

  • Anonymous

IN — still love her from AD — so I approve of her weirder looks. she’s the only celeb I know who can pull off the headband.

    • Lizzie

Yeah–AD kind of bought her a lifetime pass from me.  Hate the skirt, don’t mind the hair, love everything else: IN!

  • Anonymous

I actually love it – the slouchy sexy look? Gorgeous on her. Of course, she would probably look gorgeous in a burlap sack (unless she was sporting those teeth and that hair from Monster), but still. Girlfriend definitely hit the genetic lottery.

  • Anonymous

Having seen Camilla Belle, Zoe Saldana and Evan Rachel Wood all looking incredible in similar Gucci dresses, this looks really half arsed by comparison. Step it up, Theron! OUT!

  • Sobaika Mirza

That hair is what I did when I was late for my morning classes in college.

    IN, everything else is fab.

  • Darien Nevulti LeDisko

I think it’s really chic. The hair is a problem, and the waistband is too, but, still, it looks chic.
    I’m going to loose this.

  • Anonymous

She’s too skinny.  She doesn’t look as healthy and vibrant as she usually does.

  • Judy S

IN, gorgeous. Eccentric waistline but she can wear it.

  • Anonymous

IN I’d like the dress better without the ties and not loving the color of the lipstick but those are minor quibbles. There’s a casual elegance to it all, including the hair.

  • Anonymous

IN – it looks better on her than the model. There is something casual about the dress that I think is tied in nicely with the loose hair and flirty pink lipstick.

  • Terence Ng

I like it on the model. There it has a flapper look. Here, it looks like she tried to hike and secure the waist, killing the effect.

  • Erika Shor

I think she looks great and I love the hair. I wish those strappy things hanging from her neck were gone, but otherwise – IN!

  • Jessica

The proportions look better on Theron than on the model – perhaps because she’s a thousand feet tall, where the model only reaches about 900 feet.

  • Anonymous

OUT but more blame on Gucci than Charlize.  Those flapper inspired looks really only look good on the painfully thin & flatchested, stomping down a runway with a pout.  Standing still on a beautiful woman they are boring and pull oddly flat.

  • Jamie Thomson

Emphatically in. If I saw her on the street I’d be reduced to slack-jawed staring and vaguely non-sensical yammerings, and I’m a straight married woman. Plus, I just finished Arrested Development and was thoroughly impressed with how well she rocked the completely ridiculous outfits they put her in.

  • Anonymous

I think she is definitely an IN.  Love her lipstick! The dress is just sucky – but it looks better on her than on the model.  So I say IN.

  • Anonymous

In, she looks fantastic.  The dress is fun and different.

  • Anonymous

I love the whole look. IN! Maybe just on her on this occasion but I love the rather sloppy casualty of it – including the hair & pulling waistband. Much better than on the uptight model.

  • Anonymous

I’m of mixed opinions here, too. She didn’t put in a lot of effort, but somehow she still looks good. That has to be In worthy, doesn’t it?

That is exactly how I do my hair when I work out… So that’ definitely points off. Maybe a lowercase in?

I thought after the Hayek write up yesterday, wear free stuff crappily would be “Pulling a Hayek.”

  • Anonymous

In from me.  I like the dress (although in my head I keep trying to tie the pieces of fabric hanging from her neck) and I really like the shoes and the fact that she’s sporting a great pedicure.

  • Anonymous

It’s a MEH from me.  Don’t love it, don’t hate it.  Nothing about this look makes me care either way.  The dress would look better without the weird bathing suit ties hanging down.  They just look ridiculous.  I do think it’s funny that she appears to be either hanging onto that column or reaching for it in every photo, and when you look at the shoes, it’s clear why.

  • Nancer

Just because it’s Gucci doesn’t mean it’s great. That is a mess of a dress, but she looks nice anyway. I give her a somewhat lukewarm “in.”

  • ecallaw

I think that particular shade of pink on her lips doesn’t go with the warm tones of her eye makeup–it washes her out.

  • Vickie Lord

To me, this is an unqualified IN!  Have some coffee 😉

  • Rachel Council

IN. I don’t like the hair either, but I actually love the entire dress.

  • Anonymous

I love everything except for the white things hanging down from the top. Other than that, IN.

  • Anonymous

I’ve been rocking the headbands as of late to hide my gray roots and overgrown hair so I thank Charlize. She looks gorgeous and an IN from me

  • Anonymous

In.  The skirt doesn’t look good standing still, but it looks better on the model when she’s walking.

  • RMJ12345

Ooo, IN for me. I love the hair, and while the outfit isn’t showing her figure off to its best effect, it has an interesting structure and I like that!

  • Anonymous

It’s not my favorite look in the whole wide world, but she looks stylish, interesting, and gorgeous. She’s a total IN.

In fact, Charlize often gets it wrong, but she always tries. She’s no Angelina.

  • oohsparkley!

My first thought was how great she looked, so IN.  Somehow she is making it all werq. I even think the hair looks sweet on her.

  • Anonymous

I’m not stoked about the hair, but everything else works. IN.

  • Judy_J

    I like it.  IN.

  • Heron

    In.  Love it.  Super helleni-chic.

  • Anonymous

In. I actually think she looks kind of wonderful.

  • Mary McClelland

IN. I personally think she looks fantastic save for the hair.  I love the necklace and I think the skirt is fantastic! The hair is very perplexing though – it’s like a sixties housewife beehive for the everyday.

  • Anonymous

Can’t stand her.  But the look is IN.

  • Catherine

Holy shit that model is fucking scary. I’m going to have nightmares about that one.

For a moment I thought the skirt was really loose shorts. Also, I hate those long pieces hanging off from the top. If it didn’t have those, I may have liked it better. But really any outfit that could be mistaken for formal shorts is OUT.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

    OUT.  That is just hiddy.

  • korilian

    I rather like it. In.

  • Anonymous

This looks like a beach resort dress not a Red Carpet dress. OUT!

Wrong dress for this occasion or wrong occasion for this dress. Take your choice!

  • Anonymous

IN. I actually like her hair and I like the top half of this outfit, but not so much the bottom half (except for the shoes). Still, she manages to look quite chic.

  • Anonymous

  • Alina Valero

I think she looks great, love the shoes. IN

  • Anonymous

IN. Completely, totally IN. I love the headband – it works with the retro style of the dress lending clean lines to the whole look.

I still say she’s never looked more beautiful than in the Dior ad…the one with all the dead icons? Ad is creepy; Charlize is beautiful.

  • Anonymous

Love it from the neck down. I don’t like the makeup, but it’s passable. I’ll call her IN, but only just so.

  • Anonymous

    IN. Love the hair too.

  • Dave

IN, but barely.  Can’t say that I like the top.  Looks too much like a boob straitjacket.  For crazy boobs.

  • hilonwheels

IN. I understand the desire to get one’s hair, every little wispy piece off one’s face. It’s a cute look.

  • Anonymous

IN for her from the neck up, OUT to the dress.  Just not my thing.

  • Anonymous

In. Not crazy about the hair, but overall, a chic look. She has amazing shoulders and should flaunt them whenever possible.

  • Anonymous

If she’s out, we’re all in trouble — And I like the hair. IN!

  • Anonymous

She looks alright. The clothing is far too droopy for my tastes (top and bottom) but she somehow makes it work … a little. I also really love her hair. IN!

  • Anonymous

Gotta give it to her: the model looks like a model-bot and she looks more like Hera-by-way-of-Gucci. That skirt is atrocious though, and I severely dislike how the top seems like a movement away from a wardrobe malfunction. Theron looks lovely, but the clothes suck. OUT.

    • Anonymous

      “she looks more like Hera-by-way-of-Gucci”

      Great description!

  • Anonymous

I actually like this look, hair and all
    IN :)

  • Anonymous

I pretty much like it all, except her hair.  I like hair bands in general, and think it goes well with the outfit, it just doesn’t go with Charlize’s hair.  However, it really does accentuate her beautiful face…and wow, what a jaw line she has.

I don’t quite get the dangling white strips…but don’t really dislike them, I guess.  Perfect necklace.

  • CQAussie

I don’t mind the hair so much but didn’t like her lipstick.  Her make-up otherwise is good.  Not really sure about this dress….the top is nice but I’m kinda enh about it all…..the skirt is a bit sad….I have to give this an OUT, obviously.

  • Anonymous

I like everything but the hair, IN.

  • Cathy S

I don’t like the dress at all. It sort of just hangs on her, or maybe hangs off her. Of course, since it fits the model like that it’s supposed to, but I don’t like it. I say Out.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

EXTREMELY IN. I love it all actually.  Think the headband works well with the vaguely flapperesque detailing of the dress and it shows off her beautiful jawline. The necklace is likewise perfection. The pink lip is a great accent. Flawless.

  • Anonymous

Oh, is that what the waistband is doing. I thought it was falling at certain points. I think the dress is full out hideous, so I give her failing marks for the choice. However, I agree, she does carry it better than the model does. Faint praise. Makeup is good, hair not so much. Someone tried, but needs to try harder.

  • Rhonda Hanson

Man, she is gorgeous. I love that it looks effortless.

  • Manon

In. Very fun look, love the color lipstick.

  • Anonymous

  • katie

In- love the hair, the makeup, the top of the dress and the shoes. the skirt, not so much but not enough to keep it from being IN.

  • Anonymous

In. She looks sexy, beautiful, and effortless.

  • Ally Monge

I think she looks fabulous all the way around. Gorgeous. And as a proponent of of all things headbands, I must state I love her hair. And i love/hate her for looking so good in that lipstick.IN

  • mcglory13

I think she strives for effortless beauty (which you can pull off if you’re that pretty). She’s gorgeous, but she doesn’t overdo it and that way she stays approachable. I think she looks great.

  • Merneith

The overall look is sharp, but if you focus on the details, each detail is kind of a mess. Out, because ultimately I hate those pits of fabric just hanging off the neckline.

  • BerlinerNYC

IN. Love it all, *especially* the hair.

  • Marissa

IN. I think she looks phenomenal. I love the hair and makeup too.

  • Lisa Sloman

    Totally IN!

  • Bitsy Carver

  • Anonymous

INNNNN!!!there is nothing about this that i dont like. im 100% for the sloppy-chic look…. (when its balanced of course)

  • Anonymous

I think she looks kind of awesome. IN.

  • aimee_parrott

She does look better than the model, and she’s so pretty.  But I haaaate that dress, so it’s an OUT for me.

  • Anonymous

does no one else hate that magenta lipstick with the gold eyeshadow, or is it just me?

  • Anonymous

IN.  Don’t like the dress but she looks elegant and yes, way better than the model

  • Ruth Gottesman

In. I think she looks chic and sometimes “no effort” translates into “effortless and easy” and that’s what I think she’s done here.

  • Linde Hoff

I really like this look….she looks better than the model and quite fresh and “together”….”IN” all the way.

  • Anonymous

In. She looks good in this, and makes it look far better than it ought to look.

I don’t think the skirt would look half as sloppy & odd if those
stupid, awful, pointless, droopy, dangly THINGS weren’t hanging down
from the top. (can you tell I hate them?) They just looked as if she
failed to tie her sweet little mis-proportioned droopy bow at the

And I like her hair (though it could have been more polished), but then I like those severe Margaret/Martha/Sonja, Queen of Somewhere Cold & Icy up-dos.

  • justine

In! Love her hair and makeup, and I can only dream that I could look that good in a dress.

  • Anonymous

IN. Hee. It’s walk-of-shame chic. I actually like the hair, and think the lipstick’s a shade too pink.

  • Aly Light

  • Anonymous

I’m sorry – OUT.  Those hanging pieces look like they’re coming out of her breasts not her sleeves…yuk.

  • Elana Bryan

    She looks fabulous!

It’s kinda quirky, and I like it.  IN!

  • Francesca Lagmay

I think she looks gorgeous. IN

  • Anonymous

In… i actually like her hair… I can never get it just like that, maybe i’m using the wrong headbands…..

  • Kerry McCombs

I love it ALL. Head to toe gorgeousness! I’m dying to see her new movie, Young Adult, too!

  • Anonymous

Gorgeous head(band) to toe.  Way IN!

  • Anonymous

IN. Kudos to her (and/or styling team) for coming up with something fresh.

  • Anonymous

IN!  The design looks like it was made for her, and she’s working it something fierce.

  • MilaXX

small IN for me. I like the hair and makeup. The thing is I think the dress is fug. Looking at the model it doesn’t look  different on Charlie and she did okay in the accessories department. It just happens to be a droopy, fugly dress.

  • foodycat

IN purely because I really, really like that lipstick.

  • Felicitas Strautman

i would like this outfit so much more if it had a pair of high waisted sailor pants instead of the skirt. it looks like it just barely escaped a tragic accident and just needs to take a shower and have some alone time.

  • Christina Brennan

    I like it!  IN

  • Jaeda Laurez

I like it! I even get the hair, simply because there’s so much going on with the dress and makeup, it’s a nice choice. IN.

  • MinAgain

Very deconstructed flapper–I like it!  In.

    • LocMama

That’s what I was gonna say.  Thanks for doing it first!  In.

I was ready to give her an in until I read your comment about the headband.  It’s a hoot!  Out

  • Anonymous

Shoes, bag, and genetics make it an in.

  • Anonymous

ugh I hate her hair. the whole thing is just weird

  • Stefanos Mantyla

IN. I can see how the headband look should go with this look. Bottom half gets a bit sketchy, though, though strangely enough, it seems to work better on Charlize than on the model.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can’t say it’s a good look, but at least she looks less like she’s melting than the model.  But no slack for the yoga hair – that’s just lazy.

  • kim i

yeah, no.  nothing to hate.  she looks obscenely gorgeous.

  • Jenny Martin

Weirdly enough, I actually like it. Not a huge fan of the tiered skirt as I don’t like the shape of it, but I actually dig her hair with the deep v-neck. Though personally I think her lipstick is a bit too pinky, but that might just be me.

  • Anonymous

I still haven’t recovered from that Sienna Miller mess….
This one, I think, feels 1920s to me–I’m going to give it an IN, even though the hair is not great. She does look so pretty, despite it all–and better than most of the Jolie-ing that happens…

  • Aniela Marie Perry

IN, despite the hair which I hate.

  • Catherine Rhodes

OUT. I like none of it, expect the bright pink lipstick.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks breezy and not over-done. Updated-flapper-IN.

  • Anonymous

I agree about the updated flapper label–I like it.  I’d like to see what her hair looks like from the back–is there some interest there that you can’t see from the front?  I give her an IN.

  • Anonymous

Are you kidding?? She looks amazing!

  • Cheri Lee

This bitch has got some amazing genes!

  • Anonymous

Reluctant IN. She looks great and my first thought was that she looked beautiful, but I HATE that dress.

  • Tiger Gray

IN, though that just got out of the gym hair makes me give it grudgingly.

  • Sabina Kallstrom

    <3 this. IN!!!

Of course spineless-no-personality unborn fawns didn’t dare confronting you and voted Sienna out, and Charlize is rocking this shit, too, INNNNN!!!!

  • Anonymous

i think she’s a whole lot less annoying than sienna miller [& i doubt i’m alone in that], but i also think she looks very nice here. very often the people you pick for the abovenoted honor look laughable, she looks great. one of the only people on earth who could wear that dress w/ any sort of dignity whatsoever, true, but she does do it, true, also.

In.  Call me crazy – I like it.

  • Anonymous

IN.  This totally works for me.  She looks so much better in slinky glamour than those fussy dresses she usually wears to the Oscars.

  • Anonymous

IN, though I agree with you, I am about 55/45 on this one.. thus, the IN vote.

  • Celia

Totally an IN for me. I love the breezy-but-glam look, not your typical cocktail dress. Love the use of fuschia lips here with the black-and-white combo.

  • Shannon Stewart

Meh… I neither like nor hate it enough.  But I’m willing to give her an IN, because she did put in effort.  I mean, look at her, guys — she has on jewelry, color on her face… so much more than Jolie ever does.
