In or Out: Camilla Belle in Monique Lhuillier

Posted on November 18, 2011

Looking at her in this getup, there’s a part of us that wants to say, “Hey, Camilla Belle! Good for you for wearing something with a little bit of head-turning appeal, honey!”

Camilla Belle in Monique LhuillierCamilla Belle attends the Chopard Boutique grand re-opening VIP reception in Costa Mesa, California in a Monique Lhuillier dress.

But then we take a good look at it and the way there’s this sort of … logo … of an actual dress imprinted on the front of the dress and we can’t help but think of those old t-shirts that were printed up to look like tuxedoes. It’s a little odd, right? It’s like a superhero costume/dress hybrid. Or a uniform for an international chain of drive-thru dress shops. A Braille dress. A storebought Halloween costume of a dress that probably has “DRESS” spelled out on the back. What we’re saying here is, we’re not sure what to think of this dress.

Vote Now!
IN! It’s bold, sexy, and graphic! It’s making a statement and that statement says “DRESS!”

OUT! It’s like a salute to slips.

Olivia Wilde’s salute to tinsel was loudly agreed upon to be OUT.

She’s a stunner, and the dress is eye-catching. Sure, it’s a little weird if you stare at it too long, but she’s IN.

    • Anonymous

Yes, exactly.  The trick is to look away quickly.

I guess I didn’t look away quickly enough.  Like the color on her but otherwise OUT.

I think she looks great. Good length, looks nice with her coloring.

It’s a great little dress if your boobs are nearsighted.

Now I can’t not see the sunglasses!

  • Anonymous

I also thought “Tuxedo Print T-Shirt”.  It’s sort of like a Halloween costume or a big tease–”I look like I’m wearing my underwear for you but I’m not!”  I guess I say out because of how the top of the slip part looks like it’s stuck on like a colorform.

    • Anonymous

      Colorforms! I loved colorforms!

      • Anonymous

Me, too!  But on my boobs?  The more I think about it though the sillier and more fun it seems!

        • Anonymous

          lmao
Hmmm…I wonder where I can pick some up after work…

        • Lori

She is at a mall. It’s a really fancy mall, but it’s still a mall. Somehow colorforms kind of works with that. If she was wearing it anywhere else I’d say it was flat out nuts though, so it’s a bit of a specialty item.

      • Anonymous

Now I’m wondering if her perfume smells like colorforms.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BMEASIKJSVE6YP3DE2VLJA5CUU JulieJ

The dress is not appealing on its own merits, but: it’s a good color on her; the hair is good (I like the JBF hair with the lingerie-y dress), as are the makeup and shoes; the stylist or whoever upgraded the belt; it fits like a dream.  So I’m going to say, “IN, but only because every thing that’s not the design of the dress is spot-on.”  It’s thoughtfully done, I guess, is what I’m saying.

  • http://twitter.com/msjwatt Jennifer Wattley

    Out.

  • MilaXX

OUT That dress is hiddy. Its like glittery boobs.

  • R. L.

I got a t-shirt like that tuxedo one for a gift once.  Only mine had a bikini babe with a belly button ring.  Trashy.  This dress reminds me of that.  Out!

  • Sara__B

A dress that looks like the underwear is drawn on looks cheap to me, no matter how nicely it fits. OUT.

Out. The tuxedo t-shirt is a perfect analogy.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

She’s lovely and that pink is nice with her coloring… but I’m sorry, there is no way this dress is going to be an In on anyone.  Out.

  • Anonymous

IN. And look at that absolutely genuine smile in the 2nd pic of her. That alone gets her an in for me. She should give La Seyfried lessons.

  • http://twitter.com/shadowofrazia Dominique C

That dress reminds me of Blossom from The Powerpuff Girls, so I’m gonna say she’s Out.

  • Anonymous

Outerwear as faux underwear. As always, tacky. Out.

  • Anonymous

Looks like a reimagining of the 1980s “underwear as outerwear” trend that I hoped would never again see the light of day. And her hair just looks sloppy to me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Harris/1358701372 Linda Harris

It’s a great color on her, but a terrible dress

  • Anonymous

Out.  It doesn’t compliment her; it’s distracting.  My eyes are being drawn to the outline of her breasts.

I say she’s “in”.  I like it — great color, too.  I wish the shoes had been a bit more inventive….oh well.

Out. Nothing more than expensive version of a boardwalk t-shirt dress. Looking at it I can almost smell the cotton candy and  greasy french fries.

    IN!

  • Anonymous

I love all your scenarios for this dress. I give it an Out, because the dress would be a lot cuter if that were a real bustier/cup detail and not a bedazzled kind of affair.

It really is the dress equivalent of those tuxedo shirts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

Hate hate hate the belt. The “logo” would be better if it did not look like the pet store challenge form Project Runway. I can only assume that it’s not so fish-tank-rock in person. Maybe just welting?

  • Judy_J

Looks like a cheap Barbie dress.  OUT.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I think it’s funky, in a good way.  IN.

  • Rhonda Hanson

don’t you think her eyebrows are too thick? i know it is trendy right now to have super thick brows but there is a point where a trend has been taken too far.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

No, because they’re natural. If someone had naturally orange skin, I wouldn’t lump them in with spray tan addicts. :)

  • Rhonda Hanson

  • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

I say IN as it looks fabulous, but if you removed the red lines (especially the boob outline) it would be perfect.

  • Anonymous

I really like the color and the dress – I just hate the boob outline. And she’s really pretty. She squeaks in an IN.

  • http://twitter.com/danielleRwest Danielle West

I’m okay with the dress.  It’s her eyebrows that are giving me pause.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Out – and take the belt with it too!

  • Anonymous

It’s really fun, and she looks amazing in both the cut and color. It reminds me of Elle Driver/Darryl Hannah’s illustrated trench in Kill Bill. Love it.

  • Anonymous

I love the color, like the detail on the skirt, am ambivalent about the belt, and dislike the “outline” on the top half.  Somehow the love, like, ambivalence, and dislike equals in-ish.

  • Anonymous

    I hate it.

  • Ted Kane

The distance between the top of her shoulders and the top of the corset applique (or whatever) is too short, especially with her hair sitting on it like that.  It looks better on the model because that distance is longer.  Also, it would look better if it stopped at the top of the corset and was strapless.  It’s not egregious, but it’s still out.

  • Anonymous

I love it, but I think the belt was better on the runway version. The real issue here is her hair. What a mess. Still an IN for the overall look.

  • Kristy Evans

As Cher Horowitz would say, “It’s a total Monet. Looks good from faraway, but a total mess close-up.”

  • Aly Light

*Shrugs* I think it’s cute. IN.

  • Anonymous

Is there a fabric shortage that the public is being kept unaware of? Did Monique Lluillier run out of cloth and have to improvise undergarments? It that the reason for all the stupid cutout dresses we keep seeing?

The color is great on Miss Belle (still have no idea why she’s famous. Is she a European Kardashian?) and it would be the perfect frock to wear to a gallery opening. I question the wisdom of wearing sequins to the opening of a jewelry store, but I can’t really call it an Out. In by default, I guess, but I don’t think the dress is as witty as she or the designer might believe it to be.

  • Anonymous

She looks about as good as anyone possibly could look in that dress. So In.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  The dress is hideous, her hair is messy but not in a cute way, and while I love a strong eyebrow, hers look like someone painted them on with a black magic marker.  She does have a lovely smile, though.

  • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

The dress is a bit odd, but she looks fantastic in it. IN!

  • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

Out. You’re right, it’s a tuxedo T-shirt strapless dress thing.

  • Lori

No dress should have a Chia corset.  Out!

  • Anonymous

Did Clinique Counter decorate that dress with acquarium rocks?!  Out for the silliness of the front design & those horse hoof shoes.

  • Barbara Potter

I really like it – unusual, but not tackily so.

  • Anonymous

    Out.  Yuck.

  • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

I like the basic shape and length, and she could have used a thinner black belt. But I can’t get past that corset-y outline bringing the whole look down. Out.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Weird dress, but she looks cute.  IN, but just barely, not because of her but because of the dress.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

Oh, come on kittens! Let’s not be so bitter for a change. It’s a fun, cheeky dress. Plus it’s a great color on her and it fits her well. IN.

  • Anonymous

the only thing good about this is the colour! dont like the shoes, or the black sash.. i think her hair is terrible and she’s not accessorized right… OUT! :(

  • aimee_parrott

The color’s nice on her, but I HAAAAATE that dress.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

At first glance, I thought it was silly.  But then I thought, “that’s the whole point!”  So now I like it.

    • Sara__B

I hate it when I miss the point, but I suspect you’re right. The point of this dress is the silly cheekiness of it. It’s SUPPOSED to look like her underwear is drawn on. It’s SUPPOSED to remind us of a novelty t-shirt of a tuxedo or a bikini. Go figure.

    • Anonymous

Despite the unfortunate similarity to Peeps that another minion pointed out, I agree with Lilithcat on this one.  When I first looked at it, I rolled my eyes.  Once my eyes stopped rolling, I thought–it’s a party dress!  It’s fun and goofy, and let’s face it, it looks good on her.  So I’m going with a lower-case in.

  • Anonymous

    Cupcake bodices, ugh.

  • Anonymous

From a fashion-as-art perspective this whole “making structure derived from undergarments visible on the outside” thing is totally over. But as a dress – it looks good on her. IN.

IN, but I wish she’d keep her hair in the back. The clean effect of the shoulders gets lost.

  • CQAussie

I don’t know…..initially I was like what?  Then my eyes focused and I was like…oh!  Then….er…what?  And now I’ve landed on….erm…yeah, ok.  I think it works.  In a weird way that I don’t understand.  IN?  Yeah, ok.  IN.

  • Anonymous

I mean, it’s nothing I would wear myself because it’s too cutesy, but it’s not a bad looking dress. I think it needs more interesting shoes, though. I like the runway shoes much better with it. She looks good, but would it have killed her to comb her hair?
    I’ll give her an IN.

  • Anonymous

I really love the color combo, but I can’t get past the memory of those ghastly little bustier purses. The horror!

  • Anonymous

Out.  The dress is just strange.  Her hair is messy.

  • Anonymous

I’m giving it in In. It’s interesting and she’s got the body to carry it off. The hair on the other hand…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=689960034 Marcella Cypher

I’m kind of on the fence.  It’s the bra-like bit that kills it for me.  Without that and using just the lines I think it’s stunning.  The color looks great on her, and I think she did a good job of adding to the contrasting belt with the shoes and hair color.  The hair style is ok, perhaps a little oddly-shapen.

Overall, it’s a close IN for me.

  • Anonymous

She looks sensational.  The color is great on her, and the shape is awesome.  Good job with hair and makeup too.  But I am going to give her an out because that printout did remind me of Halloween.  OUT, but it’s not her fault.

You guys are funny. Yes, a salute to well-seamed undergarments. But she looks beautiful in it,  so I give it an IN.

  • Anonymous

I just don’t like this dress. She looks good, but that’s only because the dress makes you want to scroll up. The way the lace is applied is just wrong. OUT.

Out. That psuedo-bra look is ridiculous.

  • Anonymous

In! It’s a head-turning look, the dress has lingerie details without looking slutty, and the dress looks better on her than on the model.

  • Shannon Twigg

Monique Lhuillier is my favorite designer, but this is not a great dress. That being said, it’s different and interesting, so I say IN.

I can’t decide.  Seriously!  I love the color, love the fit, and the front piece gives it a little edge.  But then as you point out, it’s a print outline of a dress on a dress, so…

    I’m stumped!

IN! Great color, and even though there’s a dress on her dress, you really can’t compare it with a tuxedo t-shirt, because the dress itself is already pretty dressy. I think it’s cute and chic, and I like the lines.

IN. The dress is fun, and she finally keeps her hair down and looks like her youthful age for once.

Out! It’s a weird dress and even weirder eyebrows.

Monique L is so over-rated.  Dreadfully unflattering dress … pretentious too.  If a dress can be considered such.

I hate the dress.  Hate.  Then again, I’m one who can’t abide bra straps showing (it IS called underwear, yes?), so a dress with a bustier outlined on it?  Hell no.  Tacky and never flattering.

erzatz, and not in a good way. too Barbie bedazzler. Out

I can’t even look at what she’s wearing, her face is so stunning.  Those eyebrows!  That little smile!  Apple cheeks!  She’s just beautiful.

Styling is everything with this dress. She’s sucked all the verve out of it with blah styling. Plain and too-thick belt, boring shoes, and hair that, while lovely, is covering the dress and destroying the balance of costume-vs-fashion.

    OUT.

cut 14″ off and it’s a sjp mess-dress that distracts from her over acting.  that pat field would find.

It’s fug, though she is wearing it well.  OUT, but not Camilla’s fault  (except that she chose it in the first place).

I think it would be a lot cuter without the red outlines because I feel that those are what contribute to making it seem like “a dress imprinted on a dress”. Especially the top ones. The line going down I like. But its still a cute, fun, chic dress. She looks great. IN.

    Out. Craptastic.

In. I like it as much as I can like any dress with somebody’s underwear drawn on it.

It fits, she looks good in it, and it works BEAUTIFULLY with her coloring & makeup. (though I wish her hair weren’t obscuring the top of the dress.)

The dress looks cartoony. But she looks great in it. IN

Out, I was already thinking about how the cup outlines had nothing to do with her actual breasts before reading your comparison to those tuxedo t-shirts.  Also I like the slightly above knee length on the model better, in terms of general proportions.

Oh weird. I loved it until I saw it from any angle other than straight on.

In.  It’s cheeky and she looks adorable in it.

love the color and shape on her- IN.

A shy “IN”. Her figure looks great in the dress and she looks better than the model. Maybe a different color? Navy, or something.
