Cover Girl: Scarlett Johansson for Vanity Fair

Posted on November 08, 2011

We’ve been holding off on this one for days now because every time we looked at it, we said “I’ve got nothing to say about it except it’s a bad picture of her.” But this morning we said to hell with it. You know what? We WILL post it just to point out that we think it’s a bad picture of her and you’ll LIKE IT.

Scarlett Johansson for Vanity Fair MagazineScarlett Johansson covers the November 2011 issue of Vanity Fair magazine in an Alexander McQueen dress, photographed by Mario Sorrenti and styled by Jessica Diehl.

Because really, isn’t that an awful picture of her? She’s styled beautifully (although we don’t dig her as a redhead, which is presumably for the Avengers movie, and that lipstick is awfully pink) and she’s lit well, but that facial expression is awful. One of the best things about Scarlett is that she’s got a real savviness behind her gorgeousness. Here she looks totally vapid and brainless. We wouldn’t have expected this kind of cover from VF.

Cover photos look like crap 99% of the time. This is no different. I actually love her with red hair, though.

Covers always seem to be more about all of the words plastered around the photos.

I’m on the fence about the red hair.

      • Anonymous

I like it better than the way overbleached blonde she was sporting for a while.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. Especially about Scarlett with red hair. My absolute favorite color for her.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

yes she looks vapid, the lip position looks idiotic. but the color of the whole thing is really nice.

  • Anonymous

OK, I’ll bite . . . I kinda dig the red hair, you’re right, tho, the expression is a bit vapid, but I’m more disturbed about photoshopping her torso to look like it belongs to a 4 yr old with boobs.

    • Pinup Ghoul

There seems to be a disturbing trend amongst beauty magazines to make the subject’s head look enormous in comparison to the rest of her body, and I’ll never understand how an editor can think it looks good. Cosmo is the worst offender here, but this shot is on par.

  • http://stitchingincircles.etsy.com Tina

I think she looks great. It may be a little ingenue, but I think that it goes with the bubblegum lipstick and the cute turned head: she looks adorable. And I don’t even think much of her looks usually!

came here to say all these things.

  • Jo Miller

Yes, this photo is missing Scarlett’s essence. Agreed, she looks vapid and brainless and we know that does not describe her. I don’t mind her as a redhead, just not in this photo.

  • Rebecca Johnson

She looks like she is channeling Katy Perry, with the obviously-fake haircolor and clashing lipstick.

    • Anonymous

The lipcolor is all wrong—and all I can look at.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

They’ve certainly succeeded in making her look generic.  Nice going there, VF.  If Scarlett looks meh as a cover girl, what chance do we mere mortals have?

Anyway, I actually do like that shade of red hair – it’s the clashing lipstick, grown out roots and blonde brows that puzzle me.  Not her best look.

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind the red hair so much but this is one lame cover shot. Dullsville.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_625RQ5YIKR3JR4H6BMNCKB6YDE Brenda

She looks like one of the portraits that a “Toddlers & Tiaras” beauty queen would send in. Grand Supreme winner!

  • Anonymous

I like the hair.  Not so crazy about the duckface pose.  Between her and Rosie Whatshername on the Vogue cover….apparently superstars are aping facebook attention whores, instead of the other way around.

  • Anonymous

Her head looks a bit pastede on but girl can do no wrong even with those magenta lips.

  • http://profiles.google.com/singingraisin ali meowmeow

That photo, paired with the “Funniest, Frankest Sexpot since Marilyn Monroe” description, is a super bad move. I don’t know how anyone could even consider putting the two together.

(Also, “Scarlett Fever!” guys? Really? Not exactly exercising the mind over there at VF, are you?)

  • MilaXX

I like the red hair, just not a big Scar Jo fan. I don;t hate her  just find her boring.

  • Anonymous

Love her with red hair. Her eyes are gorgeous. The rest is boring.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

Sorry, but I love it. She looks like a Vermeer.

    • http://profiles.google.com/singingraisin ali meowmeow

Which is probably why she got that role a few years back. :)

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind her hair, but it looks like a big chunk of her face was eaten away.

  • Anonymous

I’ve always loved her as a redhead.  Hate the pink lips, though.  And though she does look empty-headed, she is still gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

She looks like a little girl trying to look like Scarlett, and that’s just wrong.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1091753514 Kelli Anderson Taylor

Um… am I grounded if I think she it’s stunning?

  • Anonymous

    Yes, sir. Don’t! Stop! don’t stop don’t stop don’tstopdon’tstop

As for the picture, she’s on my annoys-for-no-reason-at-all list (along with Amy Adams, for whom I do have a reason, though a pretty silly one), so of course I agree with your assessment of the picture.

  • Anonymous

This isn’t one of those pictures where I can pick out WHAT they did, but someone photoshopped the hell out of it. I wouldn’t have known who it was if it wasn’t labeled. Whatever they did drained all the character out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf UltimaEsperenza

    You are both high.

  • Anonymous

Well I think it’s awful.  I don’t mind her as a redhead but in this pic, on my monitor, it’s dark pink hair with mousey brown roots, and I dislike the pink lipstick with it.  I also don’t like how her face blends into the backlighting.  Boo hisssssssssssss

  • Anonymous

She’s doing ‘curvy-woman-pretending-to-be-naughty-little-girl’ look. Christina Ricci does it a lot too. It’s a straight thing. You wouldn’t get it.

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I prefer her with the red hair, it makes her features sharper and more striking IMO.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I actually feel that she always looks vapid, so this is no different.  I have an unreasonable hatred of her, and since she’s no longer married to Ryan Reynolds as a character reference, I’ve decided that’s okay.  The only reason I can even tolerate her in the Avengers franchise is because I’m counting on her being overshadowed by the vast array of men I love that are also in the Avengers.  (I even love Loki  — that actor’s brilliant:)

  • Anonymous

She looks really blank–not even like herself.

And why does the dress look like some sort of container that she’s standing inside?

  • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

They photoshopped a milk moustache on her. Someone needs to be spanked.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lexynyc Alexa Chunis

hmmm..at first glance I thought it was Drew Barrymore. Not a bad thing because she is also a gorgeous woman but presumably not the look they were going for. Also- why did they photoshop her out of the dress? She looks like she’s trying to hold up a dress 3 sizes too big for her. The thing about Scarlett is her amazing curves- why take them away?

    • bookish

I thought it was Drew Barrymore at first, as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

Huh. I’ve always thought Ms. Johansson seemed pretty vapid so this seemed about par for the course.

  • Helen C

She’s going with the “I’m a Virgin!  Who’s naturally sexy and alluring despite not knowing what sexy is!”.  Hence the wide-eyed look and the pouting mouth.  Check out Japanese porn and you’ll know what I mean.

  • Anonymous

I actually like the red hair. I find that it suits her quite well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

My first thought was “who is that alien?” when i picked up my copy of VF in the bathroom today.

  • Anonymous

You expected more of a magazine that actually used ‘Scarlett Fever!’ for the article???

  • Anonymous

Red hair, brown eyebrows, blue eyes, electric pink lipstick, bad lighting equals a bad photo paired with an equally badly cover design.

  • Anonymous

She’s beautiful, and on this cover she is still beautiful.

  • Anonymous

I never recognize her on covers. She looks like a different person every time.

  • http://profiles.google.com/hillaryschuster Hillary Schuster

I think it’s the dead eyes – everything else works for me.

  • Anonymous

Doesn’t look much like her, and it’s not very flattering.  Makes me wonder why VF picked this particular photo for the cover, when you know that 500 were taken during the sitting.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

couldn’t put my finger on it before, but now i think i’ve nailed it — she’s got a Gwyneth Paltrow look, that is so opposite of who SJ really is.

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I know she can’t help pouting her lips, but I’ve grown a little weary of it.

  • Anonymous

I do not think it is that bad.  I have seen much worse on the cover of magazines.

  • Anonymous

yeah, I actually like her a lot here – it’s the lost in translation look (expression, not styling) – my favorite scarjo iteration

  • Anonymous

She dead in the eyes ala Katie Holmes and that lipstick ruins the entire look.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Yea, this is pretty bad.  She looks like a teenager.

  • Anonymous

    agree with TLO.

  • Anonymous

too much photoshop – doesn’t even look like her.

  • Judy_J

She does look vacant.  Kinda plasticky, too.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2B6U4UNVYIV5DLEG6Z24ALYOC4 Dan Alexander

I was a fan of her before she sold out and got her body cut on! Those fake fish lips and fake boobs totally took away from her acting. Maybe it helped her get parts, but she was great actress to watch before the knife got her!

  • up with pod people

the pink lip is making me completely twitch. all the earthy reds from hair to cover accent and that nasty chemical interruption in the middle of it! ugh.

that said, I am anti red + pink unless it’s February 14th, so.

  • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

Sorry, except for the terrible pink lips, I love this.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s so bad. I love the red hair on her, but yeah the lipstick is ugly.

  • bloodshothalfblind

i think they went with the open-back photo to reference the ass-bearing cellphone pic that circulated a couple months ago (when this issue was put together).  stay classy, publishing!

  • Anonymous

I kinda love this. To me she’s saying, “you wanna see me naked, well, here you go.” The colors are distracting, though.

  • http://twitter.com/boricuaintexas Ingrid

I got the magazine in the mail two days ago and its cover was so uninspiring I have yet to pick it up and leaf through.

  • Anonymous

    I barely recognise her.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

Prince Royce was wearing that exact shade of pink lipstick at the Latin Grammys tonight.
