Cover Girl: Rachel Bilson for Nylon Magazine

Posted on November 01, 2011

Rachel Bilson puts on her best face and gets styled to within an inch of her life for the cover of Nylon.

Rachel Bilson for Nylon Magazine

Nylon magazine November 2011 issue photographed by Marvin Scott Jarrett and styled by Michelle Reneau and Beth Hoppe.  Top and skirt by Marc Jacobs. DKNY jacket.

We don’t get this chick. We’ve seen her in a couple of things but found her totally unmemorable each time. She’s such a charisma void, she can’t even make ice cream commercials appealing.  Are there fans out there amongst the minions? Explain her appeal to us.

Anyway, they styled the hell out of her here to make her more interesting – and to be fair, we really like the pieces  (although we’re not sure they all go together) – but she’s still as dull as dishwater. And that rocker chick hair doesn’t suit her at all.

We swear we’re not cranky today.

oh, I dunno, I think she’s kind of cute, in a bland 20-something kind of way.

I LOVE me some Rachel Bilson. And not a charisma-suck! She’s quite charming on The OC. (I just lost all my street cred. Darn.)

I agree –she has a really charming quality, also something genuine that is closer to a kind of Valerie Bertinelli thing but less bubbly. Less an actorly thing and more that she projects something of herself, maybe (like Tom Hanks does).  Her character ‘Summer’ actually developed on the OC, and she is, once again, quite OK in Hart of Dixie. She has something that is just very likeable.

Did you really just compare Rachel Bland Bilson to Tom Hanks? HAHAHA. Sorry. That’s hilarious. The OC ended like 5 years ago and her stuff since then has remained unimpressive–in a literal way. If I saw it, it literally left no impression on me as I cannot recall anything else she’s been in recently. I suppose she’s likeable in a non-threatening, undefined, inoffensive WASPY sort of way.

        • Anonymous

hahahahaha  –wasn’t Tom Hanks on Bosom Buddies? Isn’t that how he started out?  I am sorry but I think TLo has a mild snobbishness about CW type shows. And I have to say that, T Lo, you were dead wrong in your first assessment of Mia Wasikowska and both her fashion and artistic potential.   Perhaps those in the sillier or more ephemeral roles are harder to see the potential of  –not all the times but sometimes.

    • http://profiles.google.com/clairehaley1 Claire Haley

You are correct. She was very charming on The OC! I haven’t seen her on much else (maybe only that guest stint on How I Met Your Mother), but I think she always comes across as very likeable.

And she seems stupid too!  Thank God it’s not just me — I cringed when she appeared on How I Met Your Mother, because I was afraid she was going to be a recurring character!

I didn’t think I’d ever seen her in anything, but I wonder if I’ve seen her in that.

Everybody but the frakkin mother has been on that show.  This week it was Katie Holmes stinking up the joint.

        • Anonymous

          Haha – the frakkin mother.

        • Anonymous

Frakkin mother…fly that nerd flag high. And with pride.

Obviously I’m right there with ya!

She was Ted’s future wife’s roommate – the one who gets freaked out because guys always fall for the roommate after dating her.

        • Anonymous

Haha. I’ve only ever seen the show in reruns – and I think I’ve seen most of the episodes – but I don’t think I’ve seen that one.

I am undoubtedly outing myself as a person with zero taste, but she was utterly adorable on the O.C.

She wears some cute clothes sometimes… uh, that’s about it. But better a blank than Mischa Barton or Boobs Legsly.

    • http://twitter.com/MFMblog MusingsFromManhattan

      Boobs Legsly…LOL!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

Mischa Barton is actually ok before all the drug issues.  Boobs Legly is reportedly very charming and “bubbly” (I HATE how she sticks out her tongue in every single public event.  It is just so fake-bubbly) but anyone with a brain can tell she can’t act worth her implants.  Rachel Bilson is a better dressed Jennifer Aniston.

    • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

that is very true. I don’t have much feelings about Rachel Bilson but she’s without a doubt, head and shoulders above those two.

    • Anonymous

Oh yes, much better than Boobs Legsly. I won’t bother to comment on Miss Barton…ugh.

I’ve never found her particularly interesting.  Pretty….in that instantly forgettable way. But compared to say….Jessica Alba….she’s got personality to SPARE. But then again….that’s a pretty low bar to clear.

  • Laura Valentine

the expression on her face says “I fell into Kristen Stewart’s wardrobe and makeup kit and have no idea what to do with it.”

I’m not a fan of hers, but she is kind of pretty, I guess.  That look does not suit her at all.   She looks like she rolled out of bed and put on whatever was lying on the floor, but then kind of did her makeup but left last nights hairdo untouched.

  • Anonymous

I guess I’m showing my age and my disdain for most things TV related, but to me she’s another inoffensive, interchangeable 20-something brunette with generic good looks, raggy hair, and a great agent.  She doesn’t move my interest meter one notch either way.  Meh.

But the skirt is VERY cute!

She is really charming for TV, she is just in really lame shows.  She is not made for films and all of the movies I’ve seen her in she’s been bad and the movie has been bad.  If she could get on a quality show on a good network, you’d see her appeal most definitely.  Unfortunately for her I’m not sure she has a ton of range, so she may be stuck in CW land.

Everyone’s going to hate me but I totally watch her new show Hart of Dixie and I find her charming (and she wears the cutest outfits). Also, I’m 23 so the OC ran during my teens and she was possibly the best part of that show.

Nope. Sorry. Peter Gallagher was the best part of that show.

oh my god you’re right. SANDY! ok rachel was my favourite of the people who played teenager characters.

      • Anonymous

I am unabashed in my love of the OC, and especially Sandy Cohen. What a man.

Also, yeah, Rachel Bilson was fine on that show. Not amazing, but entertaining and cute. She could be good if she were cast in the right show.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

i barely know who she is but her skirt is great.
has nothing to do w/ anything else she’s wearing, however.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Love the pieces, but what a mish-mash they are all together like this! Totally now working together. But that skirt is adorb, as is the blouse and jacket – just not together.

  • Anonymous

I’ve never actually seen her in anything, so I have no feelings either way about her. Pretty girl, but definitely nothing memorable about her, at least not in the pictures I have seen.

  • Anonymous

    Word.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Funny, before I read your commentary, I thought…how and why is this girl still around?  There is nothing striking about her…love the skirt though.

  • Anonymous

That skirt looks like it comes from the bolt of ugly quilt fabric that’s been reduced to $2.99/yard. Nonetheless it works here with the other pieces and the deliberately ratty hair.

  • lilibetp

I don’t really get her either.  I’ve been watching Hart of Dixie, but the only girl I remember is Lemon.  Although that may be because I’m too busy looking at the guys…

BTW, I’ve never seen a doctor in hot pants and five inch heels in the office.

  • http://twitter.com/nicolahearts nicole seligman

i love her. i think she’s a great stylish girl-next-door type and she’s more likable than other starlettes in that category.

  • http://twitter.com/mcterzakis marianna

Aw, I think she’s charming. For a while, she was the best thing about the show The OC.

  • Geno Boggiatto

I used to be obsessed with The O.C. and she was adorable and I loved her, I don’t know why. She was filming once at my school and I yelled “Rachel Bilson, you’re adorable!” and she very sweetly yelled back “Thank you!!”

I don’t know if I would stick around to shout praises at her these days, though… Meh.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Not a huge fan but I tell ya, that ice cream commercial worked JUST FINE for me. I actually went right out and bought one when I saw it. Not sure it had much to do with her, though.

  • Erin Kawamata

she is a horrible actress…which makes her a charisma void. she’s cute but cuteness can only take you so far.

  • Erin Nice

She was in ‘The Last Kiss,’ which I love, but not because of anything she did. I like the way she dresses, but I don’t find her to be otherwise interesting. She’s very pretty, if generic – I don’t think this particular photo does her justice.

Rachel Bilson—the perfect cover girl for a Boring in the USA issue.

Oh, that’s *born*? Never mind then.

  • Anonymous

We’re too old to understand her appeal…

  • MilaXX

nope, complete tabla rosa to me & I don’t think that skirt really works with the look

    • http://twitter.com/romyzaidel Romy Zaidel

close… it’s tabula rasa, not tabla rosa; meaning blank slate in Latin. Usually used in the context of someone untainted by previous knowledge and thus will learn X easily.

      • MilaXX

eh’ it’s been 20+ years since undergrad (Child Development major) and spelling was never my string suit.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

Younger, brunette version of Jennifer Aniston.  She’s so boring and common that everyday women can relate to her and seeing how she can be pretty with makeup/clothes, make these female fans feel better about themselves too.

    • Anonymous

Daaaamn! This is probably the cruelest comment I’ve read on TLo in a good long while.

  • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

My great aunt had a bathing cap that looked just like that skirt.

  • oohsparkley!

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who really enjoyed her on the O.C.  I gave up watching that show years ago, but I really did like it when I was watching it.

  • Anonymous

Too old to comment on this one.

  • Anonymous

I find her very bland–like there’s nothing going on behind her eyes.  I think she looks cool and kind of ‘tough’ from the waist up, but they lose me with the skirt.

  • Anonymous

She’s cute and has a certain charm on-screen.  And she seems like a genuinely likeable person in interviews.  And I don’t get that she’s a total attention-whore.

  • Colleen Blakelock

She was really fun and adorable on the O.C. That ice cream commercial made her look like a 40-something woman scorned. And not in a good way.

  • BerlinerNYC

She is one of those people I would see on magazine covers and wonder why the hell I was supposed to know who she was. Basically Sienna Miller 2.0.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Rachel Bilson is Back! And I didn’t even realize she was gone.
blah, blah, STAND UP STRAIGHT DARLING and then go eat a pizza. I’m yelling to try to get her attention. ‘Cause she looks dazed.

  • Anonymous

To the extent that I am aware of her, I know her as the guest judge in the surfwear/avant-garde challenge in Season 6 of PR. I didn’t know who she was then and, aside from that, I don’t know who she is now.

I like her skirt, but it doesn’t go with the rest of the outfit. That is all I have to offer you.

  • Anonymous

She was cute in the couple of episodes of Chuck she was in.

  • Joyce VG

There is no explaining this chick’s appeal.

  • Anonymous

Ummmmmm…. Am I the only one who says NO to pairing that skirt with that sweater/shirt combo?  Really?  She looks like she was dressed by a manic depressive during the full moon (apologies to those bipolar folks with style).

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

It’s cool. I’m bipolar and have style but we’re all obligated to do the stereotypical crazy person living under a bridge outfit at least once.

  • Mariah J

That skirt does NOT go with that jacket…waaaaaaaaay off. She’s boring.

  • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

Most of her fans have loved her because of The OC, where she was quite charming. Other than that, she really hasn’t done anything that worthy, that’s true. Also I  don’t think her style is anything to shout about but she’s frequently tipped as a style icon.

  • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

Those of us who were in high school when “The OC” aired are obligated to have a girl crush on Rachel Bilson. Also, I have no problem making the bold statement that she’s got the best street style in Hollywood. This girl can wear jeans and sunglasses like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Also, she’s tiny. At five feet tall, I always support the tiny girls.

  • http://twitter.com/KathleenGillies Kathleen Gillies

She’s cute, inoffensive and young.  I have seen her on the new show–Hart something and like her.  She is a bitty thing, sweet and dare I say it? sexy/sweet/classy w/o being twee/calculated which is hard for a celeb girl her age.  I get the impression she thinks of herself as an actress rather than a “brand.”

  • http://twitter.com/warontara Tara

Well, America does have some sort of fascination with bland celebrities….we just call them “accessible”

  • Anonymous

I couldn’t have said it better myself.  Add to that, I have a hard time sitting through the commercials for her new TV show, Heart of Dixie.  Her acting is marginal and her voice … I can’t even describe it.  I’m sure she’s a lovely person, I just don’t get the fascination.

  • Anonymous

Aw, I like her. And I’m really surprised to see people slagging on her looks. I think she’s quite beautiful, like a grown-up Selena Gomez or Demi Lovato. Also, she wears clothes really really well.

  • Anonymous

I covet that shirt. Meanwhile, she looks kind of like she has a lazy eye, no? I dunno if the makeup is uneven or what, but I can’t look at anything else. Except maybe the placket on that shirt.

  • Anonymous

HAAAAAAAAAAATE her. Everything out of her mouth sounds like she’s either yelling or trying to be sarcastically funny. Girl has one speed, and that speed is SUCK.

  • Anonymous

I don’t get her, but a lot of people must. Chanel loves her.

  • Noelle Haland

That posture is making me CRAZY, and not in a good way. Talk about making her look like a sullen, sulky teenager. Ick.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OYWH5NAGE3TS2MWXRAVBSWBSZA Brittany

Rachel, unfortunately, has been elevated to front & centre status with the lack of charisma that you just cited. The last season of The OC (where she started out) she was the female ‘star’  after they killed off Mischa Barton. It failed terribly though, she just doesn’t have leading lady cred. The only reason she’s still around – as far as I can tell – is she’s spent years being photographed in fashion-y ensembles on the streets of LA. Plus Josh Schwartz (creator of The OC) made her the lead in his new show. But I don’t see it lasting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688150598 Elizabeth Siegel

I love her solely because of The OC.

  • http://twitter.com/onecrazymuggle Aubri Tuero

The OC. watch it, love her.

  • http://twitter.com/hpenfield Hannah Penfield

I love her! She’s sweet and wonderfully charming and permanently youthful and wonderfully stylish and has that wonderful pixie face. I love her!

    • http://twitter.com/hpenfield Hannah Penfield

Sorry, I’m too tired to think of adjectives for “wonderful”. She was soooo charming on The OC.

  • Adella Thompson

For me she’s just enough like Katie Holmes pre-Cruise to inspire the warm feelings many had for her. Aww, she’s so quite and spunky and elegant and… wait who’s Rachel?? She wasn’t in the Batman movie!

  • Anonymous

Maybe if her face didn’t cry out “Kill me now” it’d be a bit more tolerable

  • Anonymous

She is always one big yawn to me. I don’t get her, either.
