Cover Girl: Michelle Williams for ELLE UK

Posted on November 03, 2011

We suspect the Bitter Kittens don’t really love Michelle the way we do. It seems like every time we post about her, a bunch of the precious unborn fawns of our comments section weigh in on their dislike for her. This doesn’t make us sad because everyone’s got the celebrity that they hate (and some of us have lists), but we suspect the following pictures of her on the cover of Elle UK aren’t going to do anything but set some of you off because they’re just so very Michelle Williams.

Michelle Williams for ELLE UK Michelle Williams featured in the December 2011 issue of ELLE UK photographed by Alexei Hay and styled by Leith Clark.

And by “just so very Michelle,” we mean a little twee and a little manic pixie dream girl. But we can’t help it, we gasped a little at both pics. Say what you will about her, the girl’s got a look and she knows how to work it. She mentioned in her Elle interview that her signature hairstyle is some sort of memorial to baby daddy Heath Ledger, who loved her hair that way. That’s sweet and makes us feel bad that our first impulse upon viewing these pictures (after gasping, of course) was to think “Cute, but this hairstyle’s got a ‘sell-by’ date and we’re coming up on it.”

Manic pixie dream girl! Have you been reading Mindy Kaling in the NYer? Loved that essay.

    • Anonymous

Wait, I amend that. She credited Nathan Rabin with that phrase.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Manic pixie dream girl is female trope that’s – for whatever reason – super popular these days. I don’t really get the appeal, but I do like Michelle Williams. She’s talented and conducts herself in the public eye really well.

The hair is getting old though.

      • Anonymous

Ugh, a guy I dated for three minutes who endearingly called me his manic pixie dream girl. He couldn’t understand why I took it as an insult. I have hopefully changed my behavior since then!

        • Sobaika Mirza

Hah I think I would be bothered if someone called me that. It’s essentially a Dumb Blonde: Hipster Edition.

          • Anonymous

Oh I definitely took it as an insult. He was a moronic hipster who thought any comparison to Zooey Deschanel was a compliment.

    • Rand Ortega

Someone should do a cover/editorial on Mindy. She’s the whole package: Beauty, Brains, Bod, Hilarious!

  • Anonymous

Well, if her “I’m ready to move on” quote on the front cover means what it says, maybe she’ll move on with her hairstyle, too!

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Yep, it seems to me that she’s uncomfortable in every photo, and in most of her movies. Awkward. Not a fan.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I love that first cover. Really love it.

    • Anonymous

Oh my God YES!  That does not bode well for the future.

  • iCouture

She looks pretty, but gasp-worthy?  No.

She is definitely embracing her look and working it for all its worth.

  • Anonymous

You can count me in the “love her” camp. These pictures are really lovely, without being too sweet, and are definitely gasp-worthy. And I covet that Prada!

    • Anonymous

Me too. I think she looks so pretty here and I don’t care that she’s had that hair for a while. Not many people can pull that style off, but it looks great on her.

  • Anonymous

Very sweet. Nothing objectionable. I liked the turtleneck halter on the original gown better than what was done to it in Michelle’s shot though. The red dot dress is so Garnet Hill, very wearable and cute.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      Those are lips.
The dress was featured on this blog before, but I don’t remember who wore it. But I am pretty sure it didn’t look as good on them as it does on Michelle.

  • Anonymous

I think she’s just fantastic. Say what you will, “awkward” is a look for a model – something about that busted-down china doll thing just reads high fashion, in a very unconventionally pretty way.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I love both pictures. There is something unpolished about her face that pulls against the whole effect–but maybe that just takes it into edginess.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robin.layton Robin D. Layton

I don’t hate her but I don’t get the love at all.  There are hundreds of better blonde actresses and better-looking blondes.

    • Anonymous

      Exactly

    • Anonymous

All with Oscar nominations… oh, wait.

    • Anonymous

I like her because she goes against the typical “Hollywood blonde” look. Now I am biased with my brunette locks, but blondes can often look a bit cheap, but Michelle always looks classy. She is an atypical blonde (by celebrity standards).

  • Joseph Davidson

She looks great in both photos but absolutely gorgeous in the second.

  • Anonymous

I like her just fine and am glad she seems to be doing okay.  That must have been a really rough patch.  She can make another movie with Ryan Gosling anytime again.  Loved Blue Valentine.  Prada dress is adorable.  And the McQueen 2011 sensational — shades of Leann and her petals.  (Love the sandals in the Prada-model photo).

    • Anonymous

I was going to comment and say how much the McQueen reminded me of Leanne’s spectacular wedding dress…

    • Libby Rhoman

It’s a bit more than “shades of Leanne.” That’s one of Judy’s signature moves, specifically in her most recent bridal gowns…

Also, I’ve loved Michelle since “Me Without You.”  She really seems to enjoy her job and I appreciate that.

  • Anonymous

I love her and her little hairdo! She’s a wonderful actress and she’s one of the few pixie ladies that don’t make me feel like cutting a bitch (I’m lookin’ at you, Deschanel).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Elizabeth-Poytinger-Baumer/1516981341 Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

I really like her and I like these pics.  IN

  • Anonymous

For some reason, I always get her and Renee Zwelleger (spelling?) mixed up.

    • MilaXX

here’s a clue – she keeps her eyes open.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, some sort of plastic surgery has done strange things to RZ’s face.

  • Anonymous

I’m in love with the first photo of the cover shot of ELLE UK. She looks so delicate and vulnerable here. I like that whomever is responsible had the sense to contain the palette in these soft, muted colors. I’d like it even better if there were no other writing on the cover, just her photograph and the magazine title. Beautiful, dreamy dress and expression on her face.

Most magazine covers shout at us from the newstand, often in garish, clownlike colors. I know the first rule is to try to stand out from all the other magazines. I actually think a muted palette sans words might actually accomplish that.

  • shanna bowie

I love Michelle Williams. She’s amazing and so beautiful. And I love her short hair. I’m thinking about cutting mine again and going for something similar.

  • Anonymous

Really? I didn’t know she had haters. I adore her. She always comes across as intelligent and classy, and (as a short-haired gal myself) I admire her pixie cuts.

  • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Well, I’ve always liked her, I think she looks wonderful in both pics, and I think she should keep that hair always. I guess I don’t understand thinking that a woman needs to change her hair all the time. Most men don’t, and really, if you have a hairstyle that works for you, why change it? I mean, unless it is really trendy and trying too hard, but a pixie is just about as classic as you can get.

(I admit, I might feel a little defensive, since I have had the same basic haircut for ten years and counting, and don’t plan to change it anytime soon.)

  • Anonymous

You’re right. Nuthin’. Absolutely blah and nuthin’. Not a bad actress, but she’s not acting here.

  • MilaXX

I read that interview and I have to say it made me like her. Then again she’s not on my celeb hate list and I like short hair.
Of the 2 cover pictures I prefer the white dress on the red polka dot. The white looks very much her style, but more grown up, but that polka dot is the twee-ess of the twee.

    • Anonymous

What I want to know is, who IS on your celeb hate list?

      • MilaXX

Sadly it’s an ever growing list. Julie Roberts is number one with a bullet. Taylor Swift is a close second.

        • Anonymous

          And Jen Aniston…..

          • MilaXX

I know she hits the hate list for a lot of folks, but I’m just indifferent about her. Don’t love her, but don’t really hate her either.

          • Anonymous

Oh, I actually like Jen Aniston a lot.  I thought we were going over T & Lo’s list.  They HATE her…. and her “towel” dresses.

          • MilaXX

            LOL
well we all have out list.

        • Anonymous

          Ouch!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

To me she will always be Jenn from Dawson’s Creek… so I have an affection for her, what can I say?  She looks every inch the gamine.  I love her hair.

    • http://twitter.com/ionascloset ionascloset

Me, too! I’m happy she’s become such a respectable actress. . . it makes me a little less embarrassed by my Dawson’s Creek love.

And she looks lovely in these pictures – love the second one. That dress is perfect for her style.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Me, too, but she has come SUCH a long way as an actress, and she lost the chipmunk cheeks as she grew up.  I will also always have a soft spot for her because I think she wore one of the greatest Oscar dresses of all time.

      • vmcdanie

I never watched that show but the cast has done so well for themselves over all, I think it’s not near as shaming as admitting you loved, say, the original 90210 (although that’s kind of a chic shame.)

James Van Der Beek is in fact due for a renaissance. He charmed the pants off of me when he hosted the New Now Next Awards. Not only does he have a sense of humor about himself, he’s a straight man who is incredibly comfortable around gay men. I’ll watch his new show for that reason alone (well, Krysten Ritter is a pretty compelling reason too…)

  • Anonymous

I love that she’s sitting in the McQueen dress.  I suspect sitting is the only way to make those hideous, shelf-sized pleats look good!  And I’ve had that hairstyle pretty much all my life, and it rocks.

  • Anonymous

Well, I don’t care. I love her. And I love her look.

  • Anonymous

She’s an incredibly talented actor, with a list of atypical and interesting movies behind her. This bitter kitten loves her, even if I don’t love these looks. They are ok, but I’m ready for something different from Mish.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the cover shot. I like the lip dress picture, though, yes, she’s been flogging the Jean Seberg look for a while now. Of course, she’s not doing it by herself ,and wouldn’t it be something if sylists and editors let their imaginations roam beyond the limitations of the pixie cut. But I do like her.

  • Anonymous

I like her just fine. I never noticed how sad her eyes look though, until she was got up in Marilyn drag.

  • Anonymous

…’a little twee and a little manic pixie dream girl’. Perfect description of two lovely shots. Read about the Heath Ledger thing too, I think it’s sweet. Probably because I already love her and her hair.

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

How come long hair never seems to go past its sell date, even though people wear the same boring cut year after year?

    • Anonymous

Thank you. I rock a pixie, and in my opinion a really good short haircut (on the right person) is a classic look, not a quickly passing trend.

There’s no reason long hair has to be the default.  People should have a hairstyle that looks right on their faces, regardless of whether it’s in or out that season.

  • http://profiles.google.com/hillaryschuster Hillary Schuster

How can anyone not LOVE her?!  Perfection (at least in terms of celebritydom).

  • Anonymous

I like the Twiggy cover, but the first one, not so much.

  • Anonymous

Love her or hate her, you have to respect her choices.  She was on Dawson’s Creek and could have parlayed that into some Twilight fest of work.  Instead, she does amazing work in indy films and is perennial Oscar bait.  I never really considered myself a “fan” per se (but there are few for whom I am), but I admire her work a great deal.  And she does the mad pixie dream girl as well as if not better than anyone out there right now.

    • Anonymous

She really is an indie movie darling and has done some very interesting choices over time. For that I give her a lot of respect as youre right, she could have gone in a totally different direction after Dawson’s creek. she’s one actress who really has seemed onto grow in her fashion sense over time and if she’s still occasionally doing the “twee” bit, I suspect she’s evolving her way out of it. More power to her!

      srq

  • Anonymous

She’s adorable. I’d rather look at her than Anne Hathaway any day.

  • Anonymous

I like her, pixie cut and all and think she’s a very fine actress. But I hate that cover, hate the sad face. The second shot is so much better and it’s exactly what you’d expect from her.

  • http://profiles.google.com/clairehaley1 Claire Haley

I like her a lot, and I’ve always thought the short hairdo works for her. In fact, I’ve done the pixie cut many times and I’ve always gotten very good results by bringing in a picture of Michelle Williams.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t realize there was an anti-Michelle Williams school of thought. I didn’t think she was luminous and charismatic enough to capture Marilyn, but I think she’s a good actor and good looking and works the gamin thing well. Not as spectacularly as Leslie Caron or Jean Seberg or Audrey Hepburn or Mia Farrow, but well enough. I do like that she looks different than most current-issue young blond actresses. I need help keeping all those cookie-cutter whippersnappers straight.

  • Anonymous

Can one really hate Michelle Williams? She’s genuinely talented and beautiful. I can see how one might be a bit turned off by her getting crowned as a hipster grande dame, or possibly by her performance as Marilyn Monroe (oh yes, I personally am not sold on it until I see the movie), but hating her? Really? If you hate her, how on earth do you feel about Kim Kardashian?

  • Anonymous

I love Michelle Williams.. her style is so effortless and I envy her ability to dress down and still look chic.  Those who don’t like her can just suck it.. ;)

  • Natasha Fairweather

I love her short hair. So cute!

  • Anonymous

What bugs is her self aware preciousness.  This tendency for women to tweak and cram themselves into cute little personalities and bodies is bothersome and she seems to convey that very strongly in her public image.  It can be very hard for a woman to learn to own her space when it is rewarded culturally to be small in every manner of the word.  Yet speaking personally it is far more fulfilling and powerful to be energetically full and embodied regardless of your size.

    • Saoirse Lee

You hit the nail on the head.
She’s a powerful Hollywood player hiding behind a simpering, little girl facade.

      • Onika K Morris-Alleyne

who says she’s hiding? it may just be that that’s her personality. she’s never been ‘in your face’ and there’s nothing wrong with that.

  • Rand Ortega

She’s really cute. But whenever I see her I see Mia Farrow 1st. I wish MW would update the look w/ a twist that’s all hers.

    • Anonymous

exactly!  everytime i see her with her short hair i immediately think mia farrow.

  • Anonymous

i love this girl so much. she is gorgeous, but in an unconventional way, so i never tire of looking at her. and she nails every part she gets. she’s also not afraid of gritty, risky parts, or roles in which she’s styled to look “ugly.”

i saw her in a shopping mall once. she’s super petite! she was by herself, and it was before she was really famous (she was on “dawson’s creek” at the time) – i always regretted not saying hello. we were actually looking at the same store display, so she was definitely close enough to talk to.

  • http://twitter.com/nicolahearts nicole seligman

michelle williams is perfect and i WISH i could wear my hair like that.

  • Anonymous

She looks abuot 1000x better in these pics than she did in those creepy Marilyn Monroe spreads.

  • Anonymous

Yeah but Michelle is more “sad pixie girl”

  • http://twitter.com/hpenfield Hannah Penfield

I actually find her very boring and pretentious.

  • Anonymous

I think her hair is just beautiful and perfect for her face.  It really works for her.

  • http://twitter.com/Miss_Fury Miss_Fury

As a fellow short-locked lass (and neither manic nor pixie), I do like her look most of the time. She  does have a spaced-out passive quality in her photos at times, but overall, love.

  • Anonymous

She looks lovely but I think she’s getting a little too long in the tooth to keep the doe eyed pixie look going.  She’s still a young woman but I think you have to be very young to sustain this.  And I don’t love grown women looking like little girls.  Clothes and photographas are beautiful, though.

  • http://twitter.com/mexicophile Joan Rulland

She reminds me of Mia Farrow, especially in the red dot dress.

I love the Alexander McQueen dress on the model!!! But Michelle is sitting and is wearing it like a strapless, with the halterneck missing. Oh well.

    Joan

  • Anonymous

I think she looks great and it doesn’t bother me that she keeps the same pixie cut – suits her face and her frame. Actually, keeping the same cut (as long as it is a classic cut) is one of the oldest tricks in the book for remaining “ageless.” Take someone like Anna Wintour. If you look at a series of her photographs, it is very hard to date her.

  • Anonymous

Since I cancelled TV service a few years ago, and therefore stopped watching most TV and commercials and movie trailers, I hardly know who any celebrities are any more. I don’t know who Michelle Williams is (an actress?), so your posts about her allow me to appreciate her for what she looks like: A really gorgeous girl with an adorable pixie cut. Maybe she’s got an annoying voice or has an snobby attitude when she’s in front of a moving camera that makes other unborn fawns hate her. For me, she’s just a little cutie-pie.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DJQMGJU7MZMBVLSD4GUTPJEPD4 murt

she looks nice, but also so juvenile in both pictures… I don’t know.

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I don’t hate her, I’m just not a fan. She comes across as bland and uninteresting to me.

  • http://postsomethingcreative.blogspot.com Nicole

You were right: I rolled my eyes as soon as I saw it….it’s funny that you say precious unborn fawns because that’s exactly how I would describe the face she’s giving here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=19801927 Dennis Coyle

I can’t wait for the Marilyn biopic but at the same time, I do find that I have a problem with Williams often.  She so often “acts” by being blank–or at least appearing so.  I think it is a matter of her going for subtlety and just not coming across as anything.  It’s in full-on action (or inaction) here with these pics.  Looking at her eyes in isolation or her mouth in isolation, I can totally see an emotive shape and interest, but together… nothing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I think she’s absolutely beautiful in a Mia Farrow sort of way. Why not keep the same signature look? If it works, it works. She’s a decent actress, but got outclassed by a mile by Ryan Gosling in “Blue Valentine.”.

  • Anonymous

    You suspect right.

  • Anonymous

I’m trying to think of what movies I’ve seen her in, and I’m coming up blank. But I do like these shots. She looks very reminiscent of Twiggy.

  • Anonymous

This unborn fawn loves Michelle and these pics are fab. I had short hair for quite some time and loved it…until I didn’t anymore and now it’s growing out. Forgot what a pain growing hair out is. She can keep it as long as she wants.

  • Susan Crawford

I know I’m an uber-bitter little kitten, but honestly, if I read one more article about Michelle is vowing to “move on” I’m going to have to claw something to death. That being said, I find her oddly appealingand in that McQueen dress – she is incredibly gorgeous. But I think the cute little full-skirtedgirly-twirly look IS getting a bit much. Amp it up, baby! You can handle it!

  • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

These photos are much better than her attempts at Marilyn.  But that terrible hair…  The cut would look much nicer if that bleach job wasn’t so freaking atrocious.

  • Jenna Kuhmann

I like her well enough -  I think she’s a great actress – but she’s been riding her dead ex-boyfriend/baby daddy’s 6-foot-under coattails for much too long.  She needs stop identifying herself/letting her publisist identify her by Heath Ledger’s tragic death.

  • Anonymous

Why take the hood off the Prada and the collar off the McQueen?  I loved those elements!

Love the second picture and only 0.005% of the female population can rock that hairstyle…

  • Erin Nice

I love her and these photos. The Prada dress is very cute.

I am beginning to suspect you two don’t like short hair.  You criticize short hair do’s quite a bit on this blog.  I notice because I have short hair!

  • Anonymous

I love her hair and love that she has stuck with it so long. I hacked all of mine off into a pixie cut this summer after an entire lifetime of being enslaved to long, long curls and it was the most liberating, wonderful, freeing thing I have ever done. I can’t imagine going back to the drudgery of hair ever again.

She looks pretty fabulous in both of these shots.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Photoshop critique:  Unrealistic darkening betwixt her legs in photo 2 meant to draw our eyes toward….cheap tactic, poorly executed.

I have given up commenting on how people look in these mags because it is only the airbrushing we see.  To say “they look great” is just saying, nice photo-refinishing.   ps what’s that on her wrist? Did we miss a spot?

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

Oh gosh–all I can see in that second pic now is that weird thing on her wrist.

  • vmcdanie

I don’t get the Michelle Williams hate at all. That bitch can act her ass off. She’s been extraordinary in everything I’ve seen her in, even if I couldn’t watch parts of Wendy and Lucy because that damn movie makes me cry hysterically.

She looks very cute here and more to the point, her pictures are interesting. They make me stop to take a closer look.

  • Anonymous

I like the first photo, but her pose in the second one is just so… derpy ingenue. Over it!

  • Toto Maya

I don’t really have a strong opinion of her either way. I don’t really get why people love or hate her. She’s pretty and from what I can tell a very good actress. Good for her. These pictures aren’t doing anything for me. I guess what’s odd about Michelle Williams is she can look really gorgeous or whatever and I just have no reaction to it.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I love both pix, but especially the second one.  She’s not on my “hate” list – I don’t think she’s right for the MM part, but that’s just me.  Anyway, these are both incredibly beautiful pictures of her.

  • Anonymous

And she photographs so much better than her former Dawson’s Creek costar. Also, she isn’t married to a closeted Scientologist. Two points in her favor.

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

I do get a bit tired of her tendency to dress 20 years younger than her age, but she looks spectacular here. And I think her haircut tribute to Heath is really sweet.

  • Anonymous

Loved her since she was Jen Lindley on Dawson’s Creek, and she’s only gotten more fabulous over the years.  These are beautiful pics!

  • Anonymous

up lighting does her face wonders. She is so dreary to me. She looks 20years older than she is to me…nevery every time. I just saw the preview for the marilyn pic and what I thought was “no” is officially OH HELL NO!” not in a million years is she right fro MM. Right after was a Charlize Theron preview and I thought immediately Damn she would have been 100 times better with a few pounds put on her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

Oy! That model in the polka dot looks like a refugee who hasn’t had a chance to bathe yet – shiny face, greasy hair, and a 1000 yard stare. Why is this being used to sell a dress?

  • http://eatliveblog.com/ Renee {Eat.Live.Blog}

I adore Michelle Williams, your other readers must just be insane, that’s the only real cause for hating on her…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CN4C3R54M4NZPD2644FRFP2UYU jennifuh

I looove her.  She’s consistently impressed me with her acting, she seems like a nice lady with her head on straight and she really can take a photograph.  I also might still be girl-crushing on her from her Dawson’s Creek days, but don’t tell anyone.

As for the manic pixie thing, I can see that, but I think she’s the thinking-person’s version of it.  I don’t want to slap her into oblivion.

  • Anonymous

No, no! The pixie cut is timeless and adorable. Do not give it a sell-by date! (Says woman with pixie cut.)

May I just point out that she NEVER had this hair style when Heath was alive?  And they broke up for almost A YEAR before he died?  I know I’m going to get craps for saying this, but she’s really milking his death for too long.  It’s not like she won’t be recognized for her own merit.  Just stop trying to get attention with your EX-BOYFRIEND’s death.

Yaknow, if once in a freakin’ while we could have a picture of her really smiling, or laughing or even scowling, I wouldn’t be irked so much. But day in, day out we get the slightly depressed smirk that on occasion upgrades to slightly wistful smirk. She’s a great actress and manages to usually sound decent in interviews and the pixie cut could have staying power minus so much twee, but LOSE.THE.SMIRK.

Aw! I love Michelle Williams! She looks great here.

She always looks sad and tired to me, like she’d give her eyeteeth to be curled up in a window seat with a Bronte novel and a cup of tea.

I think she’s absolutely adorable!  And I love her in that hairstyle…it really suits her!

She looks absolutely stunning in the McQueen dress, and she looks typical Michelle-cute in the Prada one. But the McQueen on her is breathtaking…

P.S. I’ve loved Michelle since Dawson’s Creek, and despite my love for her, I do think that some of her attempts at being “different” on the red carpet have backfired. But hey, at least she tried!
