Cover Girl: Chloe Moretz for Jalouse

Posted on November 29, 2011

We had a choice of either featuring Chloe on the red carpet today (At the Hugo premiere) or Chloe in the pages of French mag Jalouse looking like this:

Chloe Moretz for Jalouse MagazineChloe Moretz covers the December 2011/January 2012 issue of French magazine Jalouse in a Gucci ensemble paired with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes.

Gucci Resort 2012 CollectionGucci Resort 2012 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss

And since her red carpet wear was a bit drab and we didn’t feel like criticizing a 14-year-old today, we opted for this, which is much, much more fun. For us, this is how you shoot a very young girl modeling high-end fashion; you give it a sense of fun and drama without trying to make her look super-sexy or too grown up. Granted, there are models as young as Chloe who are regularly made up to look much older but that’s why they’re models; they have the capability of changing their look depending on the lighting and styling. Chloe right now could never really pass for anything much older than her age, so any attempts to make her look too sophisticated tend to backfire. She looks cute here, but more importantly, she looks fierce. And the mega-extensions are fun.

At first I misread the cover and thought it said, “Jailhouse.”

      I think she looks scary.

      • Anonymous

        i totally read Jailhouse too!

She actually IS in an upcoming Tim Burton movie.  I don’t remember the title, but it’s based on a vampire soap opera from the 70′s.

        • http://typicalgirlink.wordpress.com/ Dorothy Damage

Dark Shadows. I am terrified that he will ruin one of my favourite teenage guilty pleasures (hello SciFi late 90s reruns).

    • Anonymous

sorry guys i must disagree, she looks neither cute nor fierce…she looks like the pics i see of my middle school son’s gal friends doing their best ANTM mugging on Facebook, now that may have fully been the intention, if so, she has succeeded…

      • Anonymous

except that she’s not doing that pouty lip thing…which is good.

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Pouty is what they do when they want to look sexy. The “model” look is more pained and contorted.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

It looks a little like she’s about to sneeze to me.

        • Anonymous

Amen to THAT! Makes me want to slap that puss off her face. ;-)

      • Anonymous

Indeed. The whole thing is kind of contrived. I get that she must not look sexy bc she is too young, but she looks positively ill. My guess is hepatitis.

At least today I learned that models don’t have kneecaps.

        • Anonymous

I was thinking something more like gastroenteritis, what with the grasping of her stomach as she’s bent over and her pasty and pained face.  I don’t see this as fun at all, more like an ad for some gas meds.

I also noticed the lack of knees and the shininess of the model’s legs.  I had to check twice to make sure it was an actual person and not a Barbie.

This whole thing is freaking me out.  I think I need more coffee.

    • Anonymous

I don’t know how fun this is really… I mean, she kind of looks like she’s got massive stomach cramps, and worse luck, her kitten just died.
Still, well done to them for not going down the sexy tweenager route anyways.

      • Anonymous

Gotta laugh reading your comment, I have a friend who calls this ‘the stomachache pose’ and damn if that doesn’t capture it!

You are so right… it was a great movie.

I can’t wait until I have time to go see it!  I’m really looking forward to it.

    • Anonymous

sorry guys, she looks neither cute nor fierce to me, what she does look like are the middle school girls on my son’s FB page doing their best ANTM mugging for the camera, if that was the intended look i would say she has succeeded…..

        double post! :(

    • Tamara Hogan

Ugh, it looks like she was beaten just before the picture was taken.

      • Anonymous

        You are so right.

    • CQAussie

Creepy.  With droopy eyes looking like she’s on crack.  *shudder*

      • Judy_J

I’m with you.  She does look drugged.  Not good.

      • Cathy S

        Agreed.

You’re kidding, right? Nope, sorry but it just looks creepy to me.

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

      Stomach. Cramps. Are. Killing. Me.

    • Anonymous

Maybe I could get behind this if her face didn’t look so dead.  The extensions are fun, I like the look, I like the fact they didn’t attempt sex kitten, but she is not giving fierce face.

      • Anonymous

She not giving fierce face, nor is she giving fun face. It is sad face.

      • Anonymous

Maybe that’s why I’m responding so negatively to it. Sad, dead face. Gotcha.

    • Anonymous

Cute? Fierce? She looks ridiculous and whacked out. Sorry guys, I don’t see any fun in this cover at all.

    • Anonymous

I really don’t like the whole “broken-down, pouty lip” thing, and I especially don’t like it on underage models.  I probably won’t be able to express my thoughts well, but it makes her look vulnerable and damaged in a way that I find unsettling.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I think whenever I see a young girl posing in an editorial with such a serious “model-y” face I can’t help but think, “Silly child!” Thinking back to how I felt at that age, i realize that is completely condescending, but i would love to see an editorial where she is smiling.  I’m such a fuddy-duddy.

      • Anonymous

I have the same reaction. Fourteen year old girls try so, so hard to appear sexy and sophisticated that you can’t help but laugh. It would be cute if most fourteen year old girls didn’t have awful mini-bitch attitudes.

    • Anonymous

Oh thank goodness, she’s not making a blue steel face.

That said, I actually like this outfit way more on the model. On Moretz it mostly looks like Catholic glam school girl.

    • Anonymous

I like the wig. And the mini pleated skirt looks better on a kid anyway. As do the ankle socks with platform shoes.

    • Anonymous

I thought that pose was absolutely hilarious.  She looks like she needs a cracker to soothe her stomach and a then a nice little lie down.

    • Anonymous

I dream of a world where gorls are allowed, nay encouraged, to look fresh, young, happy to be alive.  Save all that angst & pain for when your thighs and boobs betray you.  ENJOY your youth, have fun!!

      • Anonymous

That should read “girls”, not “gorls”.  My poor typing skills are only surpassed by my even poorer editing skills.

        • Anonymous

Ha! I thought you were doing some kind of Bowery Boys accent. Hee.

    • Anonymous

The outfit is cute, although the extensions look out of place for me.

And the pose is awkward and strange in the context of a magazine cover. Pure Top Model albeit smizeless.

    • Anonymous

God, that is gross. That is Roman Polanski gross.

    • Anonymous

I never like her clothes or her styling in pictures or on the red carpet, so I unfairly assumed I wouldn’t like her.  Then I saw her on a talk show, Jimmy Fallon I think, and she is hilarious.  She comes across as smart, funny and totally at ease. I wish someone would dress her appropriately and take a decent picture of her.  She’s adorable.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Thanks for your comments, TLo. That was what I was thinking when I saw the picture. It’s crazy but at the same time just right. I think she has her eyes crossed?

    • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

“She looks like she was beaten?” This is “Roman Polanski gross?” Wow! The kittens really ARE bitter today! We’re not seeing the criticisms at ALL. We think she looks like a girl playing dressup, which, essentially, she is.

      • Anonymous

I’d think she’d look more like a girl playing dressup if she looked like she was having fun.  Instead she looks so hip it hurts – literally.  I love the clothes and the extensions are fun but that pose is just dumb.

        • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

To us, she looks like a girl trying to look sophisticated, which is how most girls that age would act when faced with a photographer and a chance to model high-end fashion. We think it’s charming.

          • BerlinerNYC

Unfortunately, it comes off more like a fashion-bedecked version of those nasty pantomime dances from the Pepto-Bismol commercial: “nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea…”

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XghJuH6GSCo

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

Haha, I think she looks like she’s about to sneeze, which is cute but not the effect I assume she was going for.

          • Anonymous

I see your point and I certainly can see a lot of girls that age doing that exact same pose. But it still looks dumb and I think the editors could have achieved the same effect with a pose that doesn’t make me want to feel her forehead and ask her if she’s all right.
I’m going to ask an expert about this and see what my teenage daughter thinks of it when she gets home from choo.

          • Anonymous

I have to agree with you BOYS on this one–and I’ve been very critical of the marketing of this child in the past.  But to me, this is every 14-year-old’s dream–big-girl makeup, couture, lots of hair, and an oh-so-serious fashion pose.  I think this is one of the only photos of her I’ve seen that I like, and I like it a lot.

          • Anonymous

I would find it charming if there was any acknowledgment of youthful whimsy, like a wink that it is meant to be mock-sophistication. I just don’t see it. I think I am biased against her though, because based off of her red carpet appearances, I always see her as a girl who tries too hard. If this were a photo of Hailee Steinfeld, I could see it being a bit more playful. With Chloe, it’s kind of annoying.

And yes, I am evil for having such a negative reaction to a child, but in my defense, my brother is 13. The females in that age bracket are wee devils.

        • Anonymous

Oh come on, doesn’t anybody remember being 14? It’s not all giggles and laughs. About half the time your filled with teenage angst and the other half mad as hell about something. When you dress up you aren’t generally primping in the mirror playing princess, You are experimenting with looking older or someone different than your everyday self, but it’s still just play.

          • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

            THANK YOU!

            • Anonymous

              De nada.

          • Anonymous

Except she isn’t playing; she’s being used as a vehicle to sell magazines to grownups. I think that my negative reaction to it (and I honestly do not see any playfulness or 14 yr. old experimenting in the image) might have a lot to do with being so tired of seeing these little girls hawked like they have a sell by date stamped on their foreheads.

Well, T&Lo, you have taught the bitter kittens well–we call ‘em as we see ‘em. And we don’t always see eye to eye. It’s interesting to read the different reactions, and not just here, to this particular cover. I guess they got what they wanted–people talking about it.

          • Anonymous

            I’m living with it!

            • Anonymous

Touche! This helps one to  recall the details with such alarming clarity and accuracy.

          • muzan-e

            Amen.
And the thing is that even when it’s business – which this is – it can also still be play.

            Good, healthy play, at that.

      • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

I don’t see any of THAT. I see exactly what you guys saw. (And I want to try some mega extensions for a just second. They look fun.)

    • Anonymous

fierce, really? More like awkwardly trying to play ‘model’,  which -considering her age- is kinda sweet. That braindead ophelia face is creeping me out, though.

    • Anonymous

I’m not loving it. I don’t hate it or find it creepy, but the pose and the hair extensions kind of wreck this for me. The outfit and styling look pretty cool, but I can’t see it well enough (another gripe).

    • Anonymous

I think maybe if she had a more lively expression it could’ve been cute.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

Her face scares me and I think the styling and posing ruins a supercute outfit.

    • sweetlilvoice

She was great in the movie which was a sweet film. I’d love to see the other pics from this shoot.

    • Anonymous

Like the clothes, like the extensions and barrettes, like the pose…but the lighting and angle are making “La Teen Star de Scorsese” appear homely.  Was this really the best from that shoot?

    • BerlinerNYC

Ick. That stance is creepy. There’s nothing good about that.

    • Anonymous

J’adore. She looks like a human-goat hybrid in the best way possible.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Is it just me or is this a Gaga pose?  I don’t like it, sorry TLo.  I think she looks like death warmed over.  It is a French publication, of course they want her to look starved and angry.  I think she is conveying that well.

    • Julie Woodson

A smidge over the line of sexyface

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

Ooh, I don’t like the extensions. Then again, I’m constantly fighting with my shower drain clogging so that may be the source of my aversion. Eh.

    • Anonymous

I don’t like this. I wasn’t sure why, then I went away and came back to look again and I think it is the face that is the problem — the expression she was asked to adopt, that is. Her actual face is sweet. The world-weary expression isn’t working for me.  She seems to be a bright, fun kid playing a bright, fun kid in her latest movie, so why do all the photo shoots have to make her into something she’s not? I guess I don’t know fashion.

      • Anonymous

Having read the other comments, I take the point about 14-year-olds playing at “dress-up” and being sophisticated. That’s fine. It isn’t working for me here but I can understand why other people see it.

I just think there needs to be a bit of a moratorium on placing a “child sex abuse” label on every offbeat photo that a starlet poses for. There is quite a bit of distance between what we’re seeing here and exploitation of children for sexual gratification.

    • Anonymous

I see the fun. Everything here is awkward.  And if ‘awkward’ doesn’t describe being 14, I don’t know what does.  I agree the extensions are fun and better yet they would be ridiculous on someone any older.  I think this stylist really worked with Chloe’s age.  Letting her do things appropriate only when you’re 14 and keeping her away from stuff that isn’t.  She will have many years to try and be a serious fashion model and actress, but for how much longer can she pose in barrettes and 4 foot hair?

    • Anonymous

woah major disagree. i think she looks terrible. the styling is ok, but the pose is awkward as hell, like a high-fashion parody. and shes giving the worst face.

    • Anonymous

      wait… is that a joke?
sorry Tlo i’ve never disagreed more. She looks hung over, like she’s about to puke… her face looks like it was photoshopped onto someone else’s head… she has absolutely no expression, she looks ill !

the last thing this picture says to me is “fierce” … instead it made me yell “quick go find a toilet before you vomit all over that hair!!”

    • MilaXX

This child is rapidly approaching my celeb hate list. I saw her on Jimmy Fallon and just wanted to tell her to sit down. that may be coloring my opinion of this cover because I don’t find it cute at all. It just looks like more silly child trying to pose sexy.

    • foodycat

At least it isn’t a Lolita homage. And I like the skirt.

    • bookish

The pose and facial expression makes her look like she’s about to throw up. I do appreciate that they didn’t go all sexpot with her, though.

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

gorge but isn’t she like 8?

    • Anonymous

She looks like a girl who has spent all night trying on every piece of clothing she owns and trying out every hairstyle she can imagine.  Next she’ll come out of her room wearing sweat pants, a camisole, hair pulled back in a messy bun and tell you she has nothing to wear and can’t imagine going to school without a new wardrobe.

I like the photo, especially the ridiculously long extension with tiny barrettes that remind me of golden horns.

    • Anonymous

seriously? She looks like she just got her period and the cramps are kicking into high gear.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

I just look at this girl and wonder “What the fuck does she think she is doing?”. Which is a pity since I think the outfit looks nice otherwise.

    • Anonymous

i like long hair, but that is just repulsive.  i hope that’s the point.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Well, TLo you brought me around on this one.  At first glance I hated it but the whole ’14 = awkward angst’ really brought it home.  Good cover and much preferred to another teenager looking like a desperate housewife.

    • muzan-e

It’s crazy, but not ridiculous. It’s fun, but not childish.  To my eyes, the posture reads like a clever tween making fun of Generic Supermodel Pose #23, and these things?  In my experience, they’re a lot of what being a young teenager is all about.  My nine-going-on-twelve year old would strike that pose, lift an eyebrow like “Yeah, seriously?” ….  and fall over herself laughing about it.

She’d keep the extensions, though. Hell yes.  *g*

      • Anonymous

Your daughter sounds adorable and spunky. :)

        • muzan-e

Thank you! We happily agree. *g*  Since the first day she got interested in Elle and my bathroom counter, our motto was: fashion and cosmetics are totally awesome, as long as you never take ‘em too seriously.  And that’s how she ends up wanting to be a scientist who wears ultra-bright duochrome eyeliners to work, and crazy extensions on the weekends.  Good times. *g*

Sorry guys but that is a horrible picture.

    • Sara__B

A team of professionals chose this photo from hundreds. She’s an almost-15-year-old (awkwardly stuck between little girl and young woman) awkwardly using a silly haute couture model pose (remember Christian and Chris’s professional model posing that way on PR?) after having been awkwardly styled by Jalouse staff. I hope she had a blast wearing designer clothes and trying to work that camera!

    • Anonymous

I don’t know about this one. I don’t really see fun or fierce here. Maybe I’m just in a bitchy mood today but I just don’t get it. The crazy hair extensions are cool, the clothes are fun but it’s missing something. I think commenter RebeccaKW hit it on the head…she’s not giving fierce face. Sad face.

Kudos to Miss Moretz for being a 14-year-old and not being the least bit hackneyed or pedestrian about it!

Look at her skirt. There’s no easy way to put this but there is a ‘dent’ with a thing in it. It looks like a hoo hoo. Am I being overprotective gay uncle? I would not okay this image for my nieces.

    • Anonymous

Oh I think it’s awful. Sorry to rag on a 14 year old girl but everything about this is just bad. Hate the broken down doll pose, hate the extensions, hate that lighting (no good for the skirt), hate the upwards angle- her eyes are almost closed and we can see right up her nose. Bad, horrible, no good, terrible.

Don’t know who styled this but I bet they read Tavi’s blog….in fact Tavi herself would have been better (and more interesting) on the cover

Well I think she looks adorable. She looks like a little school girl who just posed for the camera when approached. Its very whimsical and cute. I just find I tend to disagree a lot when it comes to her editorials. Its like I’m in a completely different mind set and a lot of times I feel like I shouldn’t be posting when I look through the comments lol.
