Cathy Cambridge Goes Grecian

Posted on November 11, 2011

That title sounds a little saucy, doesn’t it?

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge arrive to a reception in aid of the National Memorial Arboretum Appeal at St James’s Palace in London. Catherine wears a Jenny Packham gown.

We just mean she hit the town in a long, draped, Grecian-style gown. She looks spectacular. It’s not the most exciting color in the world, but the rich sweep of the dress makes up for any lack of excitement in hue. Love the diamond cuff. She’s judicious in her sporting of jewelry. We don’t know if that’s an economy thing or a Cathy thing, but the relatively low-key aspect of most of her looks, while boring to bitchy bloggers like us, seems to be one of the things people like about her.

We don’t like the hair at all, we have to say. And we really don’t like Bill’s fondness for double-breasted tuxedos.

She looks fab, but I hate that red flower thing. I’m assuming it’s in honor of the event?

      • Anonymous

It is a Remembrance Day poppy. UK version of Veteran’s Day, kind of, started in honor of WWI Armistice Day. Not sure how long they wear the poppies, but they’ve been wearing them all November so far.

        • Sobaika Mirza

Interesting. I assumed it was event related because everyone in the background is wearing it as well. Can’t fault her for wearing it but I’m just not loving it with gowns.

          • Amanda Brooks

We wear poppies all month prior to Remembrance Day and sometimes after in Canada too. Canadians are very connected to the poem “In Flanders Fields” since it was written by a Canadian physician and serviceman.

            • Anonymous

Yes, I was going to say the same thing: http://www.greatwar.co.uk/poems/john-mccrae-in-flanders-fields.htm

            • Anonymous

Flanders Fields is one of my favorite poems…in Flander Fields the poppies grow, between the crosses row on row…

I think it is a nice gesture. She would look good with the hair up for this once.

            • Anonymous

Poppies are worn in Belgium as well on Armistice (or Wapenstilstand) Day.

          • Anonymous

            ….its not a fashion statement to “love”…

            • Anonymous

No shit. What are people supposed to say, it’s not ‘aesthetically pleasing’

      • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

It’s a British symbol for remembrance. They wear them for the weeks before veterans day. It’s a poppy.

      • Anonymous

It’s a poppy. In the States I think you only see them on Nov 11 for Veterans Day/Remembrance Day, but I believe Brits wear them the entire month.

    • Anonymous

Don’t care for the hair either, but I love that gown and I love it on her. Jenny Packham dresses really suit her to a T.

    • Anonymous

Now see, I like her hair, especially in that last shot. When she’s talking to the 3 foot tall woman.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I think she’s 5’8ish or so, plus probably has heels on, so she looks extra-giant next to the other woman (who’s probably about 5′).

        • http://modernretrowoman.com DrJulieAnn

Not only heels, but in the first shot it looks like they are platforms!

      • Sobaika Mirza

Awww see, if I were to ever end up in her presence, I’m pretty sure I’d be navel-height with the Duchess.

      • Anonymous

LOL. I know. That shot killed me. It is like she landed in Glam Oz.

      • Jacquelina La Bomba

Does anyone else think she styled her hair like that in response to the stupid focus on the scar at her hairline a few weeks back? I noticed she pulled it back on the side w/o the scar but left it loose over the side w/the scar. Anyway, her hair is gorgeous.

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

Who is the chick next to Cathy? That gown looks kinda interesting.

      • Anonymous

        Anna Wintour?

      • Anonymous

“Hm… what should I wear to that thing where I might bump into the Royals?  I think I’ll go with my ‘ManyReptiles’ gown.  Perfection!”

    • Anonymous

I’ll take her hair on her worst bad-hair day.  That’s how jealous I am!

      • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

        AMEN!!!!

      • Anonymous

Hate people with great hair!  Always shiny, never frizzy, not fair!

    • Anonymous

I’m not loving this. (And it’s the National Memorial Arboretum Appeal? Couldn’t they have found two beautiful live flowers suitable for royalty?)

      • Anonymous

No, they wear those specific red poppies for Remembrance Day.

        • MilaXX

Sort of like US Veteran’s Day, no?

          • Anonymous

Yup. Both originated with Armistice Day, originally a celebration of the end of World War I (or possibly just the day marking the war’s official end, which later became a celebration? Can’t remember, too lazy for Wikipedia). The Brits and Americans were both in the war, so the same holiday (in substance if not in name) falls on the same day.

            • Anonymous

The treaty marking the armistice for WWI was signed on 11-11-18, and was signed at 11AM. My mother was visiting this morning, and told me that as a schoolgirl she was taught that the treaty was signed at 11 minutes after 11AM on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. So today the anniversary was 11:11 on 11-11-11!

    • Danielle Shaw

      Je suis bored.

It looks like a nightgown – just like her last silver/grey dress did.

Her hair looks ridiculous and while her make-up looks okay from afar, in close-ups it looks like she applied it with a shovel.

The new earrings are kind of fab, though.

The European princesses – Mary, Maxima, Victoria, etc. are much more interesting.

      • Sobaika Mirza

Agreed about the makeup. Is she still doing it herself?

      • Anonymous

agree with every word of this post.

    • Anonymous

Love this dress.  And I’m a fan of one side of hair pulled back, but I think this hair is too pulled back.  Like a clip over the ear is about right-this is a bit too clipped back to be done only on one side.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Bill looks like he had a bit much for dinner and is about to pop a button off that jacket.  She looks lovely, as always, but can she please stop with that weird hunch she does, where she leans her back, backwards and her stomach forward. It makes her look so….strange.

      • Jacquelina La Bomba

As a fellow tall lass, I’m curious– how do you talk to very short people in noisy places without bending at the knee, hunching over, leaning back or otherwise contorting your body so that your ear is closer to their mouth? (that sounds gross, but I don’t mean right up on their mouth!) I always end up leaning back just like Cathy but, alas, depending on how loud the party is, I usually can’t make out what they’re saying anyway…

This is a link to a UK Telegraph video clip  of  the Duke and Duchess mingling at the event.  I think she looks lovely.

      • Anonymous

Yes, she looks wonderful. I like how she always looks so happy and glad to be wherever she is (even if its not the case). LOVE her earrings.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Either she’s rocking some killer heels or Cathy is taller than I thought.

      • Anonymous

Looks like she’s wearing platform open-toed heels to me.  Surprised TLo didn’t mention it!

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I love this dress. I think the cool tone looks great on her skin, and I want that cuff!

    • Anonymous

Uh oh, she bared a shoulder. Slippery slope…. I predict cleavage before the end of the year.

      • Anonymous

        I’ll take that bet.

      • Anonymous

She wore a strapless dress to the wedding after-party, as I recall. Not exactly CMA awards cleavage, but full on shoulder baring.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I wish she’d mix it up with the hair a little bit. I like it pulled back on that one side but wish it had been done on both sides.  Love the dress.

      • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

When she did that at the previous event, the press went nuts over the scar she has on the not-pulled-back side, talking about weaves and all sorts of things and zooming in on it like crazy, so the palace had to issue a statement.

    • Anonymous

      Hi suit looks tight.

My gosh she is too thin – but her gown hair and makeup are fab.

    • Anonymous

She looks good but not great IMHO.  Cathy never looks bad but on the other hand she never looks stunning.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

That tuxedo jacket does not fit!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

Aw, I think Bill finally managed to look manly and sexy rather than like he’s wearing his father’s clothes. A tighter fit in the shoulders would have been better, and maybe single-breasted would have been better than double, sure, but he definitely looks broad with a nipped-in waist and quite sexy to me! Mrowr.
Cathy’s dress is an embodied yawn, I’m sorry. But I love the dress the lady she’s talking to is wearing. I can haz?

      • Anonymous

Agree about the Duke, he’s wearing more fitted clothing recently and he looks better for it.

    • Anonymous

I hate to be one of those “speculators,” but why does she have to clasp her hands below her belly like that? Even if she isn’t preggers, her posture and belly-centered gestures are encouraging such rumors.

You’re a princess, dammit! Now, stand like one!

      • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

That’s just part of being a very tall person talking to a very short person and trying to be respectful while also trying to look moderately elegant. Shoulders-up-and-back makes you seem snooty and rude (or at least, you FEEL like it does), so you do this weird leaning-back-and-slouching thing, and what do you do with your hands when they’re at the level of the other person’s shoulders?! If you can figure out an alternative, I would sincerely love to hear it! It would be very useful in my life.

        • Anonymous

          Well said!

      • Anonymous

My theory is that she knowingly does those things just to drive the press crazy.

    • Anonymous

Cathy Cambridge wore a dress Angelina Jolie’s already worn. http://www.harpersbazaar.co.uk/cm/harpersbazaaruk/images/eU/angelina-jolie-cut-wearing-jenny-packham.jpg

And I have to say I like it better on Angie, and I really don’t like her style much at all.

      • Anonymous

Wow! I think it would’ve done the same for Cathy, had she opted to wear the red version. The grey color is icky on anyone.

        • Anonymous

Agreed.  Red is a much more powerful color.

          • Anonymous

But you can’t wear red with the red poppy…

            • Anonymous

True, but there are many other colors she could’ve chosen that would’ve been better than the gray she wore.

            • Danielle Shaw

She just wore an outfit that had bout four different shades of red last week – which is why it wasn’t successful, if you ask me. Why wear a poppy if you can’t see it?

            • http://twitter.com/msberkeley KC

It is not just like the one Angelina wore.  It is similar and by the same designer.  But it is a one-off, as they say, designed just for the DoC.

    • Anonymous

I’m going with a totally IN for this dress on her.  Jenny Packham does a wonderful job with the draping and it looks great on her.  The poppy pins are sweet, it is a very nice way for remembering the sacrifices made by the generations before.  End of discussion on the flowers please.
I wish I could wear a double breasted suit as well as he does.

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

That second pose is pure Diana. Or maybe it’s pure royalty, but Diana employed it so much because she seemed to interact with the public more than her peers did.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I think she looks just like a… princess. Just perfect. Now that husband of hers needs a sartorial intervention.

    • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

Pretty. I like it. She’s never said she wanted to be a style icon, so I don’t expect such from her. The makeup is a skosh dark, but I love her gorgeous hair, and I even like the poppy. I’m glad she and Will have kept it simple, rather than going for the more glam-looking ones you can get. Her deco earrings are to die for.

    • Anonymous

For some reason I like half her look half the time.  In the straight-on shot, I don’t love the dress but I like her hair, and then in the profile views I like he dress but not her hair.

    • MilaXX

She looks lovely, but I wish she had worn her hair up.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U3LIDHDZPN54EKOO3NEOQPXTQU Gloria

Before anyone else mistakenly snarks on the poppy, it’s a symbol of remembrance, and it’s worn in many Commonwealth states (like Canada, where I am) as well as England, by dignitaries and by regular citizens, as early as October through November 11. The proceeds from the sale of poppies generally supports veterans and their families.

I entirely appreciate that not everyone is aware of this practice, but once you are aware, I think it’s appropriate to refrain from commenting on how much you’re “feeling” or “loving it”, since it’s not a fashion statement, but one of sombre respect.

      Thanks.

      • Anonymous

All the veterans’ groups here in the US use the poppy as a remembrance symbol as well.

      • Anonymous

My WWII veteran dad always called them “Buddy poppies” although I don’t know if that’s their official name. I buy one every year because it mattered to him.
Oh, and I don’t like this color on her. I don’t feel it suits her coloring AND it ages her.

    • Anonymous

That’s a great dress on her.

The hair is droopy on one side & ‘Maria Shriver’ on the other, I think there could have been more of an upsweep. Though maybe that would have emphasized her neck & shoulder unattractively, given how thin she is. I am not saying she needs to gain weight, but that she may feel it’s an unflattering look, especially since all it takes is one photo from a bad angle and the papers will be full of “Duchess of Cambridge Starving?” headlines.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GFMOZFM3WT3T56EZHVZFK7UXSI Ramon

That last picture is dreadful. Makes the other woman look like a well dressed Oompa loompa.

    • Anonymous

I think Bill looks quite handsome here, DB or no.

    • Anonymous

Is that woman she’s talking to wearing a SNAKESKIN PRINT DRESS?!?!?!?  I don’t know whether to applaud or scream in horror…

    • Anonymous

She’s still not showing a baby bump as far as I can see, but he sure looks a little thick around the middle.

    • Anonymous

Agree about the hair, but she looks lovely.

    • Sara__B

Bill’s hair is looking much better since he and Kathy tied the knot, but I, too, wish he’d ditch the double-breasted suits.

Kathy’s wearing too much blusher, and her hairstyle is all wrong for the dress. Even so, she looks pretty and appropriate, but this won’t make it into the coffee table books of her most memorable looks.

    • Anonymous

She looks too skinny, I am officially worried. She wasn’t this skinny when they got hitched, or before the press tour that never ended. It’s a beautiful dress on a beautiful woman but all I can see are bones.

    • Emily Faber

uhh did your layout change? it looks really weird to me. is it just my computer?

    • Anonymous

I am curious.  What makes it a “cuff” and not a “bracelet”?

      • Sara__B

A cuff is a rigid bracelet that has an open space for the wrist to slip through, or a hinge that allows it to open wide, or a large enough circumference to slip over the hand.

        • Anonymous

Wouldn’t the last be a bangle rather than a cuff?  And what about leather cuffs that have snaps or buckles?

          • Anonymous

Yes I would agree the last description is a bangle. Cuffs are the first two descriptions. Leather pieces with snaps or buckles I would call wristbands.

    • Anonymous

She looks lovely. I wanna be a princess.

She looks lovely. She really does love Jenny Packham, doesn’t she?
I think Bill looks suave despite the double-breasted jacket. But I would like to see him try something else.

    • Anonymous

In the first shot, she has total man arms and hands, made all the more noticeable by how skinny the rest of her is. Thinking Grecian may not be the best look for her. She should seriously eat a sandwich and avoid lifting weights. If you showed me that pic from mid-thigh to neck (with the head missing), I’d be sure it was a lady wrestler or a drag queen.

    • Joyce VG

still crushing hard for these two…

    • Now I am The Bee

It’s a beautiful dress and I love the color on her.  I wish she’d have worn her hair up, though.  In the first shot–she looks a little…athletic.  Like she’s walking with her arms out like body builders do.  But she’s a stunning woman and always looks great.  Major girl crush.

    • AMartel

Gorgeous, gorgeous.  Like the color of the dress, like the hair.  They look like real people, not primped dolls.  Perfect.  I don’t think she’s “scary skinny” or has “manhands”.  These are just words that jealous bitches deploy to describe ladies who are slender and have veins, ie., ladies who look better than the jealous bitches.

    • Anonymous

In related news, why is she talking to a giant snake-tiger lady?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She looks fantastic.  And with jewels like that, you really don’t need much more, do you?

    • Anonymous

Oh my godddddd, just when you think she can’t get any more gorgeous…

I want to be her when I grow up.

    • Anonymous

I actually gasped when I scrolled down — where has her bum gone?! It looks like a bad
photoshop job. Le sigh. Cathy Cambridge needs a burger to go with that non-shake.

    • Anonymous

      She looks beautiful.
I’m with you on Wills’ double-breasted jackets. This girl has such a cute style and good fashion sense; why doesn’t she sit him down and talk to him about this issue? I realize he’s the future king of England, but does he have to always look like an old fuddy-duddy when he’s out with his gorgeous wife?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

The double breasted tux is just fine, his is just a little too snug in the waist, and maybe just a bit short. Also- that bow tie is big enough to be from the 1980′s

    • Anonymous

what is her secret? I mean she looks radient every time that I see her. There is something about her that is just stunning.

      • Anonymous

I’m not a total royal follower or anything, but I’ve noticed in all her public engagements, she always looks like she is thrilled to be talking to whomever has her attention at that moment. There is something very engaging about her nature that translates to radiance in general.

    • Judy_J

I like that Cathy’s wearing a poppy for remembrance.  Prince Bill looks like the maitre d’ leading the party to their table.

      • Anonymous

Don’t really like this on her, first thing I don’t like. Maybe if her hair was up??

And if you look at that picture with her speaking to the shorter woman, her butt to her front is about 3 inches. She is very skinny, and I think she is sick with it.

Interesting, I watched the video linked by someone below and she looks better in still photos than she does in video. She looks a little nervous on the video, which never shows up in picture.

Lovely as always. So is Cathy ;) . I like her hair, but I hate one side back one side not kind of thing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Cookie.Taz Aisa Ginger Jake Psenicnik

isin’t she pregnant or something? why does she still look skinny enough to be a 3000 year old mummy?

    • Susan Crawford

She looks lovely. The dress is wonderful on her: beautiful drape, perfect flow, great fit. I actually like the hair, too. It is polished yet soft and youthful. I hope that at some point during the evening Cathy got a chance to eat a sandwich or ten, because seriously, if she gets any thinner she’s going to disappear. And I would miss her SOOO much!

Have to say T & Lo are on the money when it comes to Bill’s tendency to wear the double-breasted look. It really doesn’t suit him at all (or at least THIS one is way off the mark). That style makes him look older and stodgier than he should. And I’m not a fan of the ginormous bow tie, either. But he’s so adorable that I can overlook just about anything.

    • margaret meyers

Her hair needs to be up and back.  It just looks best with a Grecian gown.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3NXBVKLOMNGCAVCVXOVWDGD3SE Marissa

She needs to get him a stylist.  At least for a consultation with his usuals.  His hips look wider than his shoulders, and he looks as though he’s opening like a telescope.  Just like Alice. His waist looks enviably narrow though.

    • http://twitter.com/tommarkiewicz88 tom markiewicz

i detest the entire look. the colour is HORRIBLE and just washes her olive skin out. also, she needs to eat something; the diet is ageing her horribly.

    • Anonymous

She looks great. So does he. Love the poppies.

    • Anonymous

I find Cathy-style to be as boring as bread, this look no exception. And Grecian?!  There needs to be a curve here and there to stand up to the draping and flow.  This gorgeous dress is swimming on her.

      • Anonymous

LOL! I should have just said, “What Bellafigura said.” Wish I had read your comment before I posted mine. Exactamundo.

    • Anonymous

Oof, this is awful. The color is really bad on her — way too icy and dull. She doesn’t have the body for this kind of dress, there’s not a curve evident anywhere and it just looks like she was swallowed by yards of fabric.

    • Chantelle James

I gasped when I saw this dress; the cool colours suit her and I love how it flows around her. She knows which colours work for her and she sticks to those. In some ways that’s pretty smart since her clothing choices are examined in minute detail everywhere. In some ways, the fact that her clothing and jewelry choices and that she does her makeup herself makes her seem more like a regular, everyday person. It’s like she knows instinctively how to make herself accessible to people. No wonder people love her.

Poppies are usually just affixed to the garment with a pin and I hope that it didn’t put holes in that beautiful dress.

      • Anonymous

They seem to have done away with pins now. The one I bought had a sticky pad on the back. No doubt someone has decided they’re a health & safety risk! :)
